A year after Walt Disney made history with the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, his artists were struggling to find the right design for the woodland backgrounds of Bambi, the coming-of-age tale of a young deer. The film’s production team realized they needed an alternative to the style in their first feature-length animated (动画的) film. Soon they got their inspiration from Tyrus Wong, whose work was on display as a new exhibit at New York City’s Museum of Chinese in America.
Wong, an immigrant from Taishan, China, arrived in California at 9 with his father in 1919. Wong eventually settled near Los Angeles, where he developed his passions for art and drawing and got trained at the Otis Art Institute.
In 1938, The Walt Disney Studio hired him to draw the pictures between the main drawings of the animators. Wong soon learned that the studio was trying to turn Felixl Salten’s novel Bambi into an animated film. After reading the story, he saw an opportunity to break out of his humdrum job. He said. “Gee, this is all outdoor scenery. I’m a landscape painter. This will be great.”
Inspired by Chinese landscape paintings, he used watercolour to make sample sketches (草图) that led to forest scenes with simple strokes of colour and special attention to light and shadow. Wong’s sketches caught Disney’s eye and became the guide for Bambi’s background artists, who were later trained to mimic (效仿) his style.
By the time Bambi hit theatres in 1942, a strike at The Walt Disney Studio had left Wong without a job after three years of working on the project. He later became an illustrator for Warner Bros., where he worked for more than two decades.
“People admire his work because of Bambi, but Bambi was just a really small portion of his life.” says his youngest daughter. “He considers himself not a great artist but a lucky artist, who was at the right place at the right time.”
4. Why did Tyrus Wong catch the attention of The Walt Disney Studio?
A. His work won a prize at New York City’s Museum.
B. His works could be used to explore the market in China.
C. His style was the one they needed for Bambi.
D. His style matched the one in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
5. What does the underlined word “humdrum” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Risky. B. Tiring. C. Formal. D. Boring.
6. What happened to Tyrus Wong during the production of Bambi?
A. He was hired as the director.
B. He acted as the leading actor.
C. His works were used to train the background artists.
D. He only drew the pictures between the main drawings
7. What can be inferred about Tyrus Wong from the last paragraph?
A. He was a successful but humble man.
B. He made great contributions to his family.
C. He has a great influence on his daughters’ growth.
D. His contribution to art was no more than Bambi.

A handwritten document thought to have been penned by Galileo Galilei is actually a fake (赝品), the University of Michigan has announced.
The university has had the manuscript (手稿) since 1938, when it got the document without paying a penny from the trustees (受托人) of Tracy McGregor, a Detroit businessman who had gotten the document at the auction (拍卖) of another collector in 1934.
The top of the manuscript is a draft of a letter that Galileo wrote before a presentation on a new telescope in 1609. Galileo did write a version of this letter —a final draft is in the State Archive in Venezia, Italy. The lower half of the document is a set of notes on the moons of Jupiter, also based on real notes Galileo took. The final draft of those notes is also found in Italy, at the Florence National Central Library.
But when Nick Wilding, a historian at Georgia State University, saw an image of the document, he suspected something was off. The ink, the handwriting, and some of the word choices seemed odd for a 17th-century document, he told the New York Times. Wilding emailed the University of Michigan Library curator (馆长) Pablo Alvarez in May 2022 with his concerns, and the University of Michigan launched an investigation. Three months later, the university announced that Wilding was right.
The key is the watermark in the paper. Old paper often contains watermarks identifying the paper’s maker and the place of production, according to the University of Michigan Library. The watermark in the Galileo paper reads “AS”, the paper maker’s initials, and “BMO”, short for Bergamo, Italy. But the earliest known papers with “BMO” date back to 1770. meaning the document cannot be older than that. What’s more, the university could find no evidence that the Galileo document existed before the 1930s.
8. How did the university most probably get the manuscript?
A It received the manuscript as a donation. B. It got the manuscript from an auction.
C. It bought the manuscript from a businessman. D. It got the manuscript through an exchange.
9. What can we learn about the manuscript?
A. It is a presentation about a new telescope. B. It is based on Galileo’s real manuscripts.
C. It needs protection for its great value. D. It was created by a man of Galileo’s time.
10. What did the University of Michigan do after receiving Wilding’s email?
A. Ask him to do an investigation. B. Hide the truth from the public.
C. Prove that the manuscript was genuine. D. Find out whether his words were true.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. How old the manuscript really is. B. Who created the manuscript.
C. Why the manuscript is believed to be a fake. D. What was used to create the manuscript.
D

【答案】4. C 5. D 6. C 7. A

A. It received the manuscript as a donation.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. C

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“The top of the manuscript is a draft of a letter that Galileo wrote before a presentation on a new telescope in 1609. I was the best player last year,” I said confidently. True enough, I got chosen. I was so excited and honoured to share the news with my friends. “My team is perfect with me.” I thought.
Finally, after much anticipation, the day of the soccer match arrived. The atmosphere seemed unusually hot. There were tense whispers and excited cheers all around us. The spectators (观众) were excited. I could feel excitement as well as anxiety. “Will we win? What if we don’t? Will I be the star player this year?” These questions raced through my mind.
Before long, the referee’s (裁判) whistle sounded in the air to signal the start of the match. The first match was easy and so was the second. We managed to advance to the finals against some very strong opponents who were the defending champions.
The final match started well. We scored a goal. and soon after, they did too. I ran as fast as I could, intercepting (拦截) the ball whenever I could, Then. Brian, my teammate found an opening in the opponent’s defence and managed to play another round to determine a winner.

【答案】There was only ten seconds left. The pressure was palpable as the clock ticked down. With the ball back in my possession, I sprinted towards the goal, determined to redeem myself. But as I took the final shot, it sailed just wide of the mark, missing the goal by inches. The opposing team’s goalkeeper breathed a sigh of relief, and I knew I had let my team down.
The other team had won, and it was because of me! My overconfidence had cost us the championship. I felt a heavy weight of regret as the final whistle blew. Our opponents celebrated their victory, while I hung my head in shame. My friends and teammates tried to console me, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had let everyone down, including myself. It was a painful lesson in humility and the importance of teamwork.
