Its maker — Mapu Speakers — says the product is around 80 percent sustainable. Yet despite the speakers’ sustainability, those behind them did not initially set out to make the speakers more sustainable. The main inspiration was to bring traditional Chilean crafts and ancestral knowledge into the 21st century. In Chilean regions, specifically in rural Chile, where Mapu co- founder Pablo Ocqueteau was born, the crafts were dying out. There Ocqueteau noticed how most traditional craftspeople were getting on a bit. “There was nobody to succeed them,” he says. As a result, pottery workshops went into liquidation. Ocqueteau and his partner, German- born Philine von Düszeln, wondered how they could help. This thought occupied them for some time. One night, an idea came to Ocqueteau. “I had this moment when the light turned on,” he told Positive News. The story goes that he was lying on the sofa at home in Chile. Music was playing and his eyes wandered around the room. Eventually they landed on a clay jug known as a tinaja, which is used to cool water. Such pots are common in Chilean households. “I thought: ‘Maybe we could make a speaker out of that,’” he says. So that’s what he and Düszeln did. Craftspeople in rural Chile were only too happy to help the pair realize their vision. Finally, the pair built their speaker out of local materials and called it Mapuguaquén, which means “sound of the earth” in the Mapuche language. Now the pair are bringing the handmade speakers to market. More recently, Mapu has started working with craftspeople in Molelos, Portugal, on another line of speakers. “We want to help make the crafts more attractive to young people again,” says Düszeln. “Our mission goes beyond making speakers. We dream of a crafts revolution to highlight traditional handerafts in our industrialized world, building a bridge between ancestral knowledge and technology,” write Ocqueteau and Düszeln on the company’s website. 24. What was the main vision behind clay speakers? A. To show respect for Mother Earth. B. To keep traditional Chilean crafts alive. C. To create environmentally sustainable products. D. To help traditional craftspeople improve their crafts. 25. What does the underlined part “went into liquidation” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Burnt down. B. Settled down. C. Closed down. D. Slowed down. 26. What inspired Ocqueteau to make a speaker? A. An ordinary clay pot. B. The story about Chile. C. A report from Positive News. D. The gentle light music in his room. 27 What do the pair expect of their speakers? A. They can appeal to craftspeople around the world. B. They can mix technology with ancestral knowledge. C. They can encourage young people to become artists. D. They can promote technology in the industrialized world. C A United Airlines flight from Chicago to Washington D.C. made a bit of aviation (航空) history last December, completing a 600-mile trip that the airline hopes will prove the first leg of a journey to a greener future. In a first, one of the two engines on the 737 Max 8 was powered entirely by fuel made from used cooking oil and waste fat from beef, pork and chicken. Refined (提炼) at a Southern California plant, the fuel produces about 80% less emissions (排放) than conventional aviation fuel. Biofuel had been mixed with conventional fuel in the past, but United Airlines said it had never been used by itself in the engine of a commercial flight. The Chicago carrier made the flight to show the progress it has made toward its goal of getting rid of greenhouse gas emissions by2050. It’s a goal shared by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). For now, the biggest challenge is producing enough low-emission, sustainable aviation fuel that can be used in existing commercial planes without adjustment to power the world’s airlines. The world’s refineries now produce about 26.4 million gallons of low-emission, sustainable aviation fuel a year. That is only a tiny part of the 18.3 billion gallons of fuel burned by U.S. carriers alone in 2019. “There is no question there is a challenge,” Gene Gebolys, chief executive of World Energy, a Boston biofuel energy company, said. “It’s all about scale (规模).” World Energy’s Paramount, California, facility now has the capacity to refine cooking oil and animal fat into 15 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel a year. The company is investing $1.5 billion to modernize the facility and enable it to produce up to 370 million gallons a year. “Standing where we are right now, it is going to be an extremely ambitious goal to get to net zero by 2050,” Gebolys said. “Do I think it’s possible? Absolutely.” 28. What is the experiment of United Airlines? A. Using fuel from fat and oil alone in engines. B. Refining cooking oil and waste fat. C. Mixing biofuel energy with conventional fuel. D. Developing biofuel-powered carriers. 29. What barrier does the new energy promotion face? A. The stability of the refined cooking oil. B. The lack of raw materials. C. The limited production capacity. D. The energy consumption in production. 30. What is the author’s attitude to the popularization of the new energy? A. Favorable. B. Intolerant. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear. 31. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Energy Company Discovers a New Green Fuel B. Global Airlines Promise a Low-emission Future C. Is Biofuel Energy Ready for Mass Production? D. Could Cooking Oil Help Airlines Reach Zero Emissions? D A rogue wave measuring 58 feet tall was recorded off the coast of Vancouver Island in November 2020. It amazed the scientific community for being proportionally the most extreme rogue wave ever recorded. Rogue waves are those waves that are greater than twice the size of surrounding waves. So the size doesn’t matter; the comparison in size to other waves does. Thus, while a wave achieving a four- story height is impressive, its tallness being three times that of its surrounding waves is what landed it in the record books. The first rogue wave recorded was measured in 1995 off the coast of Norway at 84 feet (25.6 meters) with surrounding waves of about40 feet (12 meters). The record- breaking rogue wave recorded in 2020 measured almost 58 feet (17.6 meters) in comparison to surrounding waves of around 20 feet (6 meters). The rogue wave was measured by a Marine Labs buoy (浮标) about 4.3 miles off of the coast of Ucluelet, British Columbia. But how to continuously track rogue waves is a big science question. “Most research is based on a single buoy, a single location, which the wave just passes through, so we know at this moment it was this high, but we don’t know how long,” noted lead researcher Johannes Gemmrich. MarineLabs has just 26 buoys placed in the oceans surrounding North America. Rogue waves can present a danger to ships as well as the public. They often come unexpectedly, so the ship operator has little warning. If it is high enough that it can cause some damage to the ship, the operator has no time to change course. One common wrong belief Gemmrich wanted to explain is rogue waves are not to be mistaken for tsunamis. Although both are known for being large waves the way they come about is completely different. “Rogue waves are created by wind. A tsunami is caused most commonly by an earthquake, underwater earthquake, or as we’ve seen recently a volcano eruption,” Gemmrich stated. 32. What can we say about the 2020 rogue wave? A. It is taller than the first rogue wave recorded. B. It has reached an impressive three- story height. C. It has caused more damage than the 1995 one. D. It is about three times the size of surrounding waves. 33. What makes it difficult to further study rogue waves? A. It is risky to track them. B. It is hard to measure their sizes. C. The number of buoys is very low. D. A rogue wave does not often happen. 34. Which of the following best describes a rogue wave? A. It causes many ship disasters. B. It slowly becomes out of control. C. It can be avoided by experienced operators. D. It is hard to say when it is likely to appear. 35. In what way are a rogue wave and a tsunami different from each other? A. How tall they can be. B. How they are formed. C. How they will damage ships. D. How far they’ re from the coast. A wildfire is an uncontrolled fire that burns among wild land plants. Wildfires can burn in forests, grasslands, and other ecosystems, and have been doing so for hundreds of millions of years. Wildfires can start naturally or be human-made. ___36___ Wind, high temperatures, and little rainfall can all leave trees, shrubs, and fallen leaves dried out, causing a fire easily. Wildfires that burn near communities can become dangerous and even deadly if they grow out of control. For example, the 2018 Camp Fire in Butte County, California destroyed almost the whole town of Paradise. ___37___ Still, wildfires are important to the continued survival of some plants. For example, some tree cones need to be heated before they open and let out their seeds. Plants depend on wildfires in order to pass through a life cycle. ___38___ And others require fire just a few times a century for the species to continue. ___39___ They can kill insects and diseases. Fires can make way for new grasses and shrubs that provide food and living space for animal sand birds. Fires can clean up pieces of woods on the forest floor and open up space to let sunlight through to the ground. While many plants and animals need wildfires, climate change has left some ecosystems more sensitive to fires. ___40___ The historic practice of putting out all fires also has caused an unnatural buildup of shrubs, which can be riskier in causing wildfires. A. 86 people died in total. B. Ground fires can last for a long time. C. Some plants require fire every few years. D. Wildfires also help keep ecosystems healthy. E. That sunlight can give larger trees room to grow. F. Warmer temperatures have caused drought and dried-out forests. G. As he was an only child, his parents petted him and showered all their love and attention on him. Whatever toys his parents bought, they were always meant for him. Whatever food was in the refrigerator, there was no one to compete with him to polish it off first. Victor could leave his toys or books around the house with complete ease of mind, knowing that there was no one who would get their hands on his belongings and cause any damage. However, all that was to change overnight when Victor’s parents brought back his new baby sister, Lina, from the hospital. With her rosy cheeks, wide open eyes and angelic smile, Lina caught the hearts of her parents, grandparents and relatives. Everyone focused their attention on the cute bunch of joy. Whenever she cried, her mother or father would rush to her bed. She simply cried because she wanted to be carried. There was little time left for Victor. Now that Victor’s mother had his baby sister to take care of, she expected Victor himself to do most of the chores he can do. Victor was asked to clean his own room, iron his own school uniform and clean his own shoes. Before Lina’s arrival, he had never lifted a finger to help out with these tasks. The whole family also went out less because it was unhealthy to expose Lina to the bacteria(细菌) being in the outside world too often. Victor felt neglected by his parents. He felt that they loved Lina more than him. As a result, he tried to attract his parents’ attention by becoming resistant. One evening, Victor’s parents were called up by his teacher because Victor had got into a fight at school. His teacher had noticed Victor’s behaviour and work attitude changing downwards in the past two months. Before that, he had been a model student. Upon hearing the teacher’s feedback, Victor’s parents got lost in thought. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Victor realized that his parents still cared for him. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2023-2024学年度第一学期 福州二中、福州四中、连江一中三校12月联考 高三英语试卷 考试日期:12月26日 完卷时间:120分钟 满分:150分 第Ⅰ卷 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共5小题,每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 Which tourist spot does the woman highly recommend? It might sound far- fetched, but now speakers formed from Mother Earth have been brought to market. 27. What do the pair expect of their speakers? A. They can appeal to craftspeople around the world. B. They can mix technology with ancestral knowledge. C. They can encourage young people to become artists. D. They can promote technology in the industrialized world. B 25. C 26. A 27. 由文章第二段“The main inspiration was to bring traditional Chilean crafts and ancestral knowledge into the 21st century. (主要的灵感是将智利传统工艺和祖先知识带入21世纪。)”可知,粘土扬声器背后的主要愿景是保持智利传统工艺的活力。故选B项。 【25题详解】 词句猜测题。由文章第三段“There Ocqueteau noticed how most traditional craftspeople were getting on a bit. ‘There was nobody to succeed them,’he says. As a result, pottery workshops went into liquidation.(在那里,Ocqueteau注意到大多数传统手工艺人都有些老了。‘没有人能接替他们,’他说。因此,陶器作坊 。)”可推测,这里表示没有后继之人,陶器作坊将慢慢“关闭”了,所以推测went into liquidation表“关闭”的意思。故选C项。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。由文章第四段“Eventually they landed on a clay jug known as a tinaja, which is used to cool water. Such pots are common in Chilean households. ‘I thought: ‘Maybe we could make a speaker out of that,’ he says.(最终,他们降落在一个被称为tinaja的陶罐上,用来冷却水。这种花盆在智利家庭中很常见。他说:‘我想:‘也许我们可以把它变成一个演讲者。’)”可知,一个普通的陶罐激发了Ocqueteau制作扬声器的灵感。故选A项。 由文章最后一段“Our mission goes beyond making speakers. We dream of a crafts revolution to highlight traditional handerafts in our industrialized world, building a bridge between ancestral knowledge and technology,(我们的使命不仅仅是做扬声器。我们梦想着一场手工艺革命,以突出我们工业化世界的传统手工艺品,在祖先的知识和技术之间架起一座桥梁,)”可知,这对夫妇希望他们的扬声器能够将技术与祖传知识相结合。故选B项。 C A United Airlines flight from Chicago to Washington D.C. made a bit of aviation (航空) history last December, completing a 600-mile trip that the airline hopes will prove the first leg of a journey to a greener future. A 29. C 30. A 31. 根据第二段“In a first, one of the two engines on the 737 Max 8 was powered entirely by fuel made from used cooking oil and waste fat from beef, pork and chicken.(首先,737 Max 8两个发动机中的一个完全由用过的食用油和牛肉、猪肉和鸡肉的废脂肪制成的燃料提供动力)”以及“Biofuel had been mixed with conventional fuel in the past, but United Airlines said it had never been used by itself in the engine of a commercial flight.(生物燃料过去曾与常规燃料混合,但联合航空公司表示,它从未单独用于商业航班的发动机)”可知,联合航空公司的尝试是在发动机中单独使用来自脂肪和油的燃料。故选A项。 根据第四段“For now, the biggest challenge is producing enough low-emission, sustainable aviation fuel that can be used in existing commercial planes without adjustment to power the world’s airlines. The world’s refineries now produce about 26.4 million gallons of low-emission, sustainable aviation fuel a year. That is only a tiny part of the 18.3 billion gallons of fuel burned by U.S. carriers alone in 2019. (目前,最大的挑战是生产足够的低排放、可持续的航空燃料,使其可以无需调整在现有商用飞机上使用,为世界航空公司提供动力。目前,全球炼油厂每年生产约2640万加仑低排放、可持续的航空燃料。这仅仅是2019年美国航空公司燃烧的183亿加仑燃油的一小部分)”可知,目前,低排放、可持续的航空燃料生产量不足,新能源的推广面临的挑战是生产能力有限。故选C项。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段““Standing where we are right now, it is going to be an extremely ambitious goal to get to net zero by 2050,” Gebolys said. “Do I think it’s possible? Absolutely.”(“站在我们现在的位置,到2050年实现净零将是一个极其雄心勃勃的目标,”Gebolys说。“我觉得有可能吗?当然。”)”可知,作者在文中介绍了Gebolys的观点,新能源是可能在2050年实现净零的,推测作者对于新能源的普及是支持的。故选A项。 根据第二段“In a first, one of the two engines on the 737 Max 8 was powered entirely by fuel made from used cooking oil and waste fat from beef, pork and chicken.(首先,737 Max 8两个发动机中的一个完全由用过的食用油和牛肉、猪肉和鸡肉的废脂肪制成的燃料提供动力)”以及最后一段““Standing where we are right now, it is going to be an extremely ambitious goal to get to net zero by 2050,” Gebolys said. “Do I think it’s possible? Absolutely.”(“站在我们现在的位置,到2050年实现净零将是一个极其雄心勃勃的目标,”Gebolys说。“我觉得有可能吗?当然。”)”可知,本文主要介绍了联合航空公司的一列航班使用用过的食用油和牛肉、猪肉和鸡肉的废脂肪制成的燃料为飞机的发动机提供动力,这种新能源有可能在2050年实现净零,所以“食用油能帮助航空公司实现零排放吗?”可以作为文章标题。故选D项。 D A rogue wave measuring 58 feet tall was recorded off the coast of Vancouver Island in November 2020. Although both are known for being large waves, the way they come about is completely different. D 33. C 34. D 35. 由文章第一段“Thus, while a wave achieving a four- story height is impressive, its tallness being three times that of its surrounding waves is what landed it in the record books.(因此,虽然达到四层楼高的波浪令人印象深刻,但它的高度是周围波浪的三倍,这就是它被载入记录的原因。)” 由文章第四段“‘Most research is based on a single buoy, a single location, which the wave just passes through, so we know at this moment it was this high, but we don’t know how long,’ noted lead researcher Johannes Gemmrich. Marine Labs has just 26 buoys placed in the oceans surrounding North America.(首席研究员Johannes Gemmrich指出:‘大多数研究都是基于一个浮标,一个波浪刚刚穿过的位置,所以我们现在知道它有这么高,但我们不知道有多长时间。’MarineLabs在北美周围的海洋中只有26个浮标。)”可推知,浮标的数量非常少,这使得进一步研究巨浪变得困难。故选C项。 【34题详解】 细节理解题。由文章第五段“Rogue waves can present a danger to ships as well as the public. They often come unexpectedly, so the ship operator has little warning. (巨浪会对船只和公众构成危险。他们经常出其不意地来,所以船主几乎没有任何预警。)”可知,巨浪经常出其不意地来,所以很难说何时会出现巨浪。故选D项。 【35题详解】 推理判断题。由文章最后一段“Although both are known for being large waves, the way they come about is completely different. (虽然两者都以巨浪而闻名,但它们的形成方式完全不同。)”和“Rogue waves are created by wind. A tsunami is caused most commonly by an earthquake, underwater earthquake, or as we’ve seen recently a volcano eruption,(巨浪是风造成的。海啸最常见的原因是地震、水下地震,或者我们最近看到的火山爆发,)”可知,巨浪和海啸形成的方式不同。故选B项。 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 A wildfire is an uncontrolled fire that burns among wild land plants. G. However, it is often weather conditions that influence a wildfire. 36. G 37. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Upon hearing the teacher’s feedback, Victor’s parents got lost in thought. After school Victor often found some delicious food and new toys on his desk. When he did his homework, his father came to his room and sat beside him, reading a book quietly, which made him comfortable and warm. At that time, his mother was taking care of his sister Linda. After he finished his homework, his mother asked him to play with Linda. Seeing her sweet smile, he felt so happy. Victor realized that his parents still cared for him.So he was determined to help his parents take good care of his sister. Having finished his homework, he learned to clean their rooms and do all the chores that he could. While his mother was cooking, he played with his sister happily. He came to realize that he should take responsibility for the family because he grew up. 词汇激活 行为类 ①全身心投入:devote all one’s attention to / put one’s heart into ②决定:make a decision/ make up one’s mind ③.照看:take care of / look after 情绪类 ①感到高兴:feel happy/ feel pleased ②幸福地:happily / merrily 【点睛】[高分句型1].
