“My 10-year-old dog Prince can’t even walk up two steps to get into the house.” Alicia told her new friend. “I have to carry Prince up those two steps. Late one night I saw an ad on TV for Young Again Dog Drink. They showed an old dog trying to get into an armchair. It got only halfway into the chair before it slid back down to the floor. They showed another dog going for a ‘walk’. But instead of actually walking, the dog was sitting in a baby carriage(婴儿车) that its owner was pushing. These were all the ‘before’ pictures.”

Recently, I’ve read a research report which suggests that having a pet is good for children. It’s impossible for my children who wants to keep a pet at home to read this, because I didn’t let them do.
A study published in JAMA Pediatrics shows that children who had a dog in their first year of life can have less chance of developing asthma (哮喘) by the time they were six than those from dog-free families. It is believed that children are more likely to develop allergies (过敏) if they grow up in super-clean environments.
It is reported that 46%of families in the UK have pets, with dogs and then cats the most common animals. A study of 397 babies in 2012 found that, during their first year of life, those whose parents had dogs or cats had fewer colds than those from homes without pets. The researchers think this is because they brought in more dirt from outside to cause the babies’ immune systems (免疫系统) to work well.
The research shows that having a pet may make children feel more popular and be more understanding. Older studies found that pets increased the amount of time families spent together.
Pets can help children to learn to be responsible as well. Brush the fur, clean the place they sleep, feed them, take more exercise (if you get a dog)…
So keeping pets is really good for improving children’s health and their qualities. However, I still can’t ignore (忽视) the trouble pets may bring. After all, both dogs and cats poop (大便) at home, and they can carry worms or other parasites (寄生虫). Also, it seems that few children look after the animals. They repeatedly asked their parents for help.

We often hear stories of animals rescuing people. But now someone has managed to return the favor.
The event took place one snowy January morning. Thomas Smith was walking his dog, Jack, in the park. “As I was walking, I just saw Jack running onto the ice towards the ducks in the middle, and then he fell into the water and couldn’t climb out,” said Smith. He realized he had no choice but to try and save his dog. “Someone else told me the lake was only one-meter deep, but it was at least twice that. I had to break my way through the 6-cm ice. Finally, I got Jack by the neck, and pulled him out. I don’t think I have ever felt so cold by the time we got back to dry land. And when we got there, everyone was asking if Jack was okay — no one was particularly worried about me!”
A neighbor, Julie Brown, saw it all happen. “The dog went onto an icy lake. All of a sudden, it started to go under. There were crowds of people around, and they were all shouting and screaming. Before I knew it, the owner Smith was in the water forcing his way through the ice. I can’t begin to imagine how cold it was. Everyone was very nervous, but he was as cool as a cucumber (黄瓜) — he just crawled back out, put the dog on its lead (狗绳), and went home.”
Many regard him as a hero, but Mr. Smith said, “Most dog owners are the same as me. They would do what I did without a second thought. But in the future, I’m going to make sure he’s on a lead near any ice ponds.”

Many families keep pets at their house and it isn’t unusual to sleep with them. But when talking about better sleep, people often have some questions. Should they share their bed with a pet? Is it good for them to sleep with a pet?
Scientists have traditional said no because they thought people might not get a good sleep.“Animals may move, make noise and disturb sleep. They may get up, walk on the bed and step on people. All of that activity will lead to poor sleep,” said Dr. Polosky, a director of sleep research.
Besides, if you sleep with a small animal, it’s impossible that in the back of your mind, you’re worried about hurting your pet while sleeping. Even a little bit of anxiety (焦虑) can influence your sleep.
That may be true for many of us, but recent studies have shown that pets in the bedroom could be helpful to some of us. Research in 2017 by the Mayo Clinic’s Center for Sleep Medicine in Phoenix found over half of pet owners allowed their pets to sleep in the bedroom and most of them found their pets did not affect their sleep or that their pets might even be helpful. Another 2021 study showed that sleeping with pets might be good for children as well. Some children thought they would have a sense of safety when sleeping with their pets.
“People with depression (忧郁症) or anxiety may get a lot from having their pets on their bed because the pet can be like a big pillow (枕头) and they may feel that the warm , soft and cute animal can help them relax,” said a sleep specialist.
All in all, many of us still need to think twice about bringing our dogs, cats or pigs into our bedrooms. People can make choices depending on their own conditions.

It was on a cold winter night that I knew my mother was dying. I travelled miles from home to spend the last night with her. I sat right next to her sick body, reading her long-loved books. It was one of the most difficult and painful times in my life. After she died, for many days, I stayed alone in her room, with a lonely and empty heart. Everything was in silence.
But one evening the silence was broken: I heard crying outside. I opened the door to find a little dog on the steps. He was thin and poor. I brought him inside, fed him with some fish, and then he fell asleep.

Life is full of the unexpected. This is even true to a small pet dog. A dog called Romeo has been pulled out from the rubble(瓦砾) of an earthquake, more than nine days after the earthquake.
On August 24, 2016, a terrible earthquake happened in Italy. The earthquake made millions of people lose their houses, killing at least 250 people and hurting more than 360 people.
Romeo’s owners were sleeping on the second floor of their house when the earthquake happened. They managed to get out. But Romeo, who was sleeping on the first floor, was trapped inside. They tried their best to search for Romeo, but failed. After a few hours, they had to leave the village for their own safety.
All hope of finding Romeo alive seemed to disappear until Friday evening. That night the couple returned to their home with a group of firemen. Almost as soon as they came into the village, Romeo heard their voices and began barking(吠叫).
The couple couldn’t believe their ears. The firemen began digging at once where the barking was coming from and got to the dog. It was lucky that the dog was in pretty good condition. He looked like he had just woken from a short sleep.
Appearing completely relaxed, the dog drank his first drop of water in more than 230 hours from a bottle held by one of the firemen.
As it became clear he didn’t get hurt, the fireman put him down. When Romeo’s owners saw him, they couldn’t help crying. “We thought we had lost him forever!” said one of Romeo’s owners. Then Romeo left happily with his owners who had given up hope of finding him alive.

Brittany was diagnosed with CRPS at 16, which has made her unable to walk. She is now in a wheelchair. Brittany got Griflin through “paws4 prisons”, a program that teaches prisoners in West Virginia to train high-level assistance dogs. “They allow many dogs to come up to you and let the dog choose you,” she said. “Some dogs were scared of the wheelchair, Griffin jumped right into my lap and licked me across the face.”
Then the pair pursued 100 percent together a graduate degree in Occupational Therapy at Clarkson University attending all the same classes, lectures, research projects, etc. “Gnffin does a lot for me.” Brittany said, “including opening doors and turning on lights … If I fall, he’d get a person or a phone to help. Lola is our cat. She used to live in a large waste bin (垃圾箱), so when we brought her home, she chose to keep her distance (距离). The period of getting her trust was long, but in the end, we succeeded. One day, however, she suddenly disappeared.
Sometimes Lola slept in bed with us, and most of the time she would stay in the yard. So, when she didn’t come home one night, we went all out to look for her.
I spoke with neighbors about her disappearance and heard some awful things about some people who were killing cats. We printed posters and hung them up around the neighborhood. I wrote an open letter to all of our neighbors. I even took a day off from work and stayed up all night, fearing the worst.
The next morning, a very nice woman left us a voicemail saying that she thought she had found our cat. We drove to a nearby Walmart parking lot and got our cat back.
For the last two years, I kept reminding myself to find this woman, thank her for finding our cat. Time went past until a few months ago. One day, Susie Hansen, the boss of an animal protection organization where I am working now, asked me to go to Walmart to buy some pet food. As I headed there, I remembered that day when that woman told us the news about Lola. At that time, I still had not given up hope of meeting her.
Recently, I looked at my phone and wondered why I had Susie’s number saved as “Susie Cat Finder”. Finally, I put it together. It was our very own Susie Hansen who brought our Lola back to us! What a lovely coincidence (巧合)! Now I find out that she is my boss. Isn’t that amazing?

C.how to take good care of pets D.life of the old in Canada
In today’s world of modern science and medicine, a more traditional treatment is once again becoming popular—animal friendship.
It is now well-known that people with problems such as heart disease or cancer live longer and get better more quickly if they have pets. Keeping pets lowers(降低)blood pressure(压力)and makes people less worried. Animals are increasingly important in treating older people who have memory loss and other brain problems. These people often feel nervous and upset. Activities with animals help them improve their physical condition and also give them joy, entertainment and loving friendship.
Here is a case that shows the benefits(好处)of animals. John was a six-year-old mute. He had no physical problems. He just refused to talk. His older cousin, Ned, had a parrot(鹦鹉)called Sally, and John used to visit it. When he arrived, Ned used to say, “Hi, John!” We all know parrots copy what they hear. After a few visits, Sally began saying, “Hi, John!” when John came into the room. Then, one day, John turned to the parrot and replied, “Hi, Sally!” Staying with the parrot encouraged John to begin talking.
Another use of animal helpers is in schools. In some cases, animals are used to help children with physical or personal problems. In other cases, they are used to teach children to get on and share with others, and even to teach them about animals.
If you want to know more about animal helper programs, you can get in touch with organizations like Riding for the Disabled or do a search under “animal treatment” on the Internet. You don’t have to be an animal trainer or a doctor to join in.

When pet sitters come to take care of pets at the pet owners’ homes the owners may worry about keeping the house safe. So I always ask pet owners to put away their valuable things and maybe even set up cameras for safety. This way, we can make sure their places are safe, and if anything goes missing, we’ll have proof (证据)to help deal with the problem.
