A British woman who won a S1 million prize after she was named the World's Best Teacher will use the cash to bring inspirational figures into UK schools.
Andria Zafirakou,a north London secondary school teacher, said she wanted to bring about a classroom revolution (变革). “We are going to make a change, ”she said.“I’ve started a project to promote the teaching of the arts in our schools.”
The project results from the difficulties many schools have in getting artists of any sort - whether an up-and-coming local musician or a major movie star - into schools to work with and inspire children.
Zafirakou began the project at Alperton Community School, her place of work for the past twelve years. “I've seen those magic moments when children are talking to someone they are inspired by - their eyes are shining and their faces light up,” she said. “We need artists . more than ever in our schools."
Artist Michael Craig-Martin said: “Andria's brilliant project to bring artists from all fields into direct contact with children is particularly welcome at a time when the arts are being downgraded in schools." It was a mistake to see the arts as unnecessary, he added.
Historian Sir Simon Schama is also a supporter of the project. He said that arts education in schools was not just an add-on. “It is absolutely necessary. The future depends on creativity and creativity depends on the young. What will remain of us when artificial intelligence takes over will be our creativity, and it is our creative spirit, our visionary sense of freshness, that has been our strength for centuries."
24.What will Zafirakou do with her prize money?
A.Make a movie. B.Build new schools.
C.Run a project. D.Help local musicians.

A.Moral principles. B.Interpersonal skills.
C.Creative abilities. D.Positive worldviews.
27.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

How steady you are on your feet can indicate how likely you are to live a longer, healthy life. The ability to remain upright and steady is something that we take for granted, until something goes wrong.
The balance system is made up of lots of different sensory components, explains Nicola Harris, a health expert. Good balance depends on correct sensory information from your eyes, muscles, tendons (腱), and joints, and the balance organs in the inner ear.
The most obvious benefit of good balance is that it helps prevent falls and therefore injuries, and simply makes daily activities easier and safer to perform. Unless you develop a balance disorder, the first time people become aware of balance issues is when they get older.
Harris says that people with balance problems at her clinic often talk about the loss of the ability to look from side to side as they cross the road because they feel unsteady. “That is fundamentally because the balance system as a whole starts to get worn,” says Harris.
Pilates, dance and tai chi are all good exercises to maintain good balance. “Other things that work your balance slightly differently, but again are really good, are ball games. Anything involving hand-eye coordination, such as tennis or table tennis,” says Harris.
However, she warns against just doing strengthening exercises in the gym using machinery: “That’s not going to improve your balance.” Including tree weights and resistance bands into your workout will not only strengthen your bones and muscles, but your balance, too.

30.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.There is more than one exercise to improve one’s balance.
B.Any kind of exercise will do good to maintaining one’s good balance.
C.Doing strengthening exercises is the best way to improve one’s balance.
D.As for improving one's balance, Harris offers no recommendation.
31.Which column is the passage probably taken from?
A.Technology. B.Health. C.Fiction. D.Entertainment.

When was the last time you talked proudly about being sensitive? Most likely, the answer is never. There are plenty of characters we take pride in, but being “sensitive” is usually considered as a weakness. The message sensitive people get isn’t to celebrate who they are. It’s that they should “overcome” their sensitivity.
However, sensitivity is largely genetic (遗传的), and not something you can turn off. It is a character connected to talent and something we should embrace. In fact, according to thirty years of research, it’s not only a healthy character, but it also serves as a big advantage.
As a personality character, being sensitive means you take in more information from your environment, and you do more with it. Sensitive people process information more deeply than others do. This changes the way you see the world. You probably notice what others miss, think, and feel deeply.
The most well-known sensitive gift is creativity. Sensitive people tend to be highly creative, and many — perhaps most — artists, musicians, and actors are themselves sensitive people.
But creativity doesn’t end with the arts. The same ability changes into innovation. Many of our greatest thinkers and scientists throughout history have been sensitive people, like Charles Darwin. Sensitive people have this ability to innovate because they tend to be deep thinkers who spend more time and energy turning problems over in their heads — and end up seeing more possibilities and solutions.
Sensitive people do pay a price for these gifts, however, by becoming overstimulated. Overstimulation is what happens when there is simply too much information for the brain to deal with. But sensitive people can learn to deal with it. For them, a little bit of quiet alone time goes a long way.
If any of this sounds like you, you might be more sensitive than you realize. If so, you have probably felt the pressure to hide it. But that’s a trap. You can’t make yourself less sensitive than you are and trying to do so only cuts you off from your gifts.
Instead, the single most important step you can take for yourself is what society has told you not to do your whole life: Stop hiding from your sensitivity. Embrace it, and show it to the world.
32.What phenomenon does the author mention in paragraph l ?
A.People usually take pride in their being sensitive.
B.Being negative is often looked up to in our daily life.
C.Being sensitive is traditionally regarded as a weakness.
D.Generally speaking, we have few characters that should be praised.
33.Why does the author think of sensitivity as an advantage?
A.Because it has nothing to do with talent.
B.Because you can see the world more deeply with it.
C.Because people with it tend to be talented artists.
D.Because it is largely acquired by learning and can easily be changed.
34.Why is Charles Darwin mentioned in the text?
A.To show some great scientists in history are sensitive.
B.To explain the most famous sensitive gift is creativity.
C.To prove most artists, musicians and actors are sensitive.
D.To show sensitive people process information more deeply than others do.
35.What is a sensitive person recommended to do?
A.Pay for it. B.Consult doctors. C.Avoid showing it. D.Jump at it.

Four Things You Must Know About College Degrees
Are you getting ready to begin college, to head back to school after a few years off, or are you just exploring your options? 36 Here’s a quick overview of several key facts that will serve you well as you aim for an education certificate.
Online study can ‘save you big bucks
In modern society, it’s becoming easier to attend school online. If you choose a school’s online program, it’s possible to save as much as 50 percent over in-person. 37 Be aware that institutions that offer online study sometimes have a more limited range of courses and majors for those e-degree programs. Check if your desired subjects are part of the e-curriculum.
38
Getting your degree and paying for it are two completely different challenges. That’s why it’s essential to get financing arranged before you choose your college or pick your major. If you don’t have the money situation taken care of, schools simply won’t let you begin the coursework. The good news is that you can take out a student loan from a private lender and get the entire payment issue resolved quickly.
Do career research before choosing a major
It’s important to choose a major that has realistic job prospects for graduates. You might love art history or linguistic philosophy. 39 Accounting, IT, advertising and engineering are all sensible choices. Ask the school administrators what their most popular majors are, what job placement rates are,and whether they offer internships for seniors in their fields of study.
Concentrate on application essays
When you fill out applications for the schools that interest you, don’t just rush through the paperwork. Some of it is merely standard, fill-in-the-blank information. 40 You’ll need to be careful when filling out these kinds of items as admissions offices tend to focus on your essay, scores on standardized tests, grades, and job history.
A.Arrange financing first
B.Work while earning a degree
C.Therefore, spend at least one hour on each essay
D.But most applications usually contain at least one essay-type question
E.If so, it’s important to know a few of the basic facts about modern-day degrees
F.So, unless you have some special reason for attending in person, weigh all your choices
G.However, unless you aim to restrict your career to teaching, check out more practical majora

Jim Barr stared in awe (敬畏) at the platform in the crowded school hall. The headmaster marched onto the stage, followed by the captains of the school soccer team and rugby side. Jim watched with envy as each was presented with an honor s jacket for their contribution to the school’s sporting success over the previous year. When the next presentation of honors jacket would come around, Jim knew there was little hope that he would be the receiver of one of these treasured items of clothing.
“I wish you all a happy summer holiday,” the headmaster announced. “Although most of you will be going away to sunnier parts, there are others who will be staying near their home. The local council has asked the school to undertake a project over the next six weeks to help clear up rubbish around the area and separate it for recycling. If anyone is interested, come to my office and you will be supplied with a rubbish picker, bags and heavy-duty gloves.”
Jim knew he would be at a loose end over the holiday, so he went to the office along with five classmates to pick up the equipment needed to gather up the rubbish which littered the streets around the school. When he arrived home, his mother looked at him curiously as he placed the equipment on the kitchen table.
“What is this all about?” she asked with a smile on her face. “Mum, I’m an average pupil and I’m not very good at sports,” he replied. “This waste recycling is one way I can contribute to the good name of the school.”
“Just as long as you don’t get fed up and stop half way through,” said Mum.
“I won’t give up. I have made up my mind to do it well,” Jim said confidently.

W: Well, the computer will not allow me to lend you any other books until that one is returned and the fine is paid.

W: I think it absolutely can. Now, are you willing to study and learn a foreign language?
M: Of course.
W: Do you have any experience learning a new language?
M: I took a few classes in high school.
W: Very well. Do you have any questions for me about our program?
M: I’m curious. How did you end up as an adviser here?
W: Oh! Well, I went on my own study abroad trip to Ireland during college and loved every second of it. As a result, I wanted to help others who have the same experience at least once in their lives.
M: Ah, that’s cool. Did you ever get homesick while abroad?
W: Of course! But it’s a small price to pay for a life-changing experience. There’s a saying that sums it up quite nicely. In order to truly gain anything meaningful, something must be given up.

【原文】W: Right, everyone. I’m going to tell you about our trip to the City Museum. The museum isn’t far — it’ll only take us about 20 minutes to get there. There’ll be several events during the day and you’ll have the chance to walk around the museum for at least 50 minutes. At first we’ll listen to the museum director Jane Witton for about 30 minutes, telling us about what there is to see. Usually in a museum you’re not allowed to touch what’s on show, but on this visit, we are! You’ll all work in groups, and each group will be given pots to pick up and look at, and think about what they were used for. You’ll study some ancient rings too, although I’m afraid they’ll stay in their glass case.
The museum also has a Technology Center for education and research. You’ll be able to find out lots of interesting facts. Rather than using computers, though, iPads will be provided. You can work on these to search for information. When you’ve finished your research, for the final activity, you’ll do a quiz to see how much you can remember. When we get back to school, I’d like you to design and make something for other students to see. The museum has sent us some of their postcards, which you can use to give you ideas for the posters I want you to draw.

28.词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“The balance system is made up of lots of different sensory components (平衡系统由许多不同的感官components组成)”和其后“Good balance depends on correct sensory information from your eyes, muscles, tendons (腱), and joints, and the balance organs in the inner ear.(良好的平衡依赖于来自眼睛、肌肉、肌腱、关节和内耳平衡器官的正确感觉信息)”可推知,“sensory components”即下文中列举的“eyes, muscles, tendons (腱), and joints, and the balance organs in the inner ear”等感觉器官。所以component与part同义,意为“组成部分,器官,部位”。故选C项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Unless you develop a balance disorder, the first time people become aware of balance issues is when they get older.(除非你患上了平衡障碍,否则人们第一次意识到平衡问题是在他们变老的时候)”可知,如果没有患上了平衡障碍,没有症状,年轻人是很难感知平衡障碍的。所以“It is hard to be felt for the young if one doesn’t have any symptom.”是正确的描述。故选D项。

The ability to remain upright and steady is something that we take for granted, until something goes wrong.(你的脚有多稳,表明你有多大可能活得更长、更健康。

根据第五段“Many of our greatest thinkers and scientists throughout history have been sensitive people, like Charles Darwin.(历史上许多伟大的思想家和科学家都是敏感的人,比如查尔斯·达尔文)”可知,提到了查尔斯·达尔文是为了显示历史上一些伟大的科学家是敏感的。故选A。
35.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Instead, the single most important step you can take for yourself is what society has told you not to do your whole life: Stop hiding from your sensitivity. Embrace it, and show it to the world.(相反,你可以为自己采取的最重要的一步是社会告诉你一辈子不要做的事情:不要躲避你的敏感。接受它,向世界展示它)”可知,作者建议敏感的人应该欣然接受敏感,并勇于展示给别人。故选D。

The good news is that you can take out a student loan from a private lender and get the entire payment issue resolved quickly.(获得学位和支付学费是两种完全不同的挑战。 故选A。

You might love art history or linguistic philosophy.(选择一个对毕业生来说有现实就业前景的专业是很重要的。

67. Over the next few weeks, his classmates dropped out of the project. But Jim kept on. Some of his friends laughed at him, thinking it was a waste of time. Nevertheless, Jim decided to stick it out. The first day of the new school year soon arrived and once again the school hall was packed with pupils. When the headmaster appeared, he was carrying a certificate which bore the logo of the local council. “Welcome back,” he said, “The council has presented this certificate to the school in recognition of the work by one of our pupils. Jim Barr, please come to the platform.”
Hearing his name called by the headmaster, Jim nervously made his way to the platform. The headmaster smiled at Jim. “This certificate you have worked so hard to achieve will hang in the school office, but you will get a personal award too.” A teacher came onto the stage, bringing one of the honors jackets that Jim had admired so much. The headmaster asked Jim to remove his own jacket and helped him into the blazer that he thought he would never wear. As the pupils who had dropped out looked on enviously, Jim knew that collecting waste was certainly not a waste of time.
