Words are important, but the way people stand, hold their arms, and move their hands can also give us information about their feelings.

Just like spoken language, body language varies from culture to culture. The crucial thing is using body language in a way that is appropriate to the culture you are in. For example, making eye contact—looking into someone’s eyes—in some countries is a way to display interest. In other countries,
by contrast, eye contact is not always approved of. For example, in many Middle Eastern countries, men and women are not socially permitted to make eye contact. In Japan, it may demonstrate respect to look down when talking to an older person.

One day, Li Ming was on his way to a really important exam. Suddenly, he noticed an old lady, who seemed worried pacing up and down on the road and sometimes looked at the passersby hesitantly.
If you were Li Ming, would you help the old lady? And how?
NEED HELP!
Thinking time was enough, Li Ming went up to help the old lady without hesitation.
Firstly, he asked the old lady what’s wrong with her in Chinese. But she replied in some language he couldn’t understand and at the same time, she pointed at her ear and waved her hand left and right.
Then, he took out a piece of paper and wrote, “What’s wrong with you ? What can I do for you?”.
This time the old lady also wrote on the paper, “Hospital.”
So, Li Ming began to draw the route on the paper, but finding his time was limited and afraid she may have trouble, he just wrote, “Let me take you there”. The lady nodded her head with smile.
He pulled her arm, hoping they could move forward more quickly. Suddenly, the old lady shook her hand hard, screamed loudly and went away angrily, making Li Ming confused.

A sample writing
Dear Tom,
I’m excited about your upcoming visit during the Spring Festival! To help you navigate Chinese culture more smoothly, here are some tips on body language etiquette:
When greeting someone, a slight nod or bow with a handshake among friends is common. However, prolonged eye contact might be interpreted as impolite, so it’s polite to glance away briefly. Receiving gifts requires expressing gratitude verbally but avoiding immediate opening in the presence of the giver, as it shows respect for their thoughtfulness. For requests or giving directions, we often use open palms facing upward, which conveys friendliness and non-aggression. Lastly, personal space is respected, although we tend to stand closer than Westerners during conversations. Always be sensitive to others’ comfort levels.
These are general guidelines, and individual behavior may vary. Keep an open mind and enjoy learning about our customs!Looking forward to your visit and sharing the joy of the Spring Festival with you!
Warm regards,
Li Hua
