Is plane food good? Of course not. It’s great
Financial Times)
[A] Is plane food good? Of course not. It’s great. On the ground, I’m a picky eater. Unashamed, my appetite flies free. Once through departures at the airport, my standards drop. But even this lack of judgment seems picky once I get on to the plane.
[B] It was probably one of the worst meals I’d eaten since strict teachers used to monitor our every mouthful during school dinners. Bread as appetizing as a sponge. Did I turn up my offended nose? Nope, I ate the lot. I was on a plane.
[D] At ground level, I’m a confident picky eater. No apologies: why not be selective about what you pay for with your precious money and put into your precious body? But all that changes as soon as the seatbelt sign goes on. There’s no way I’m bringing my own food. First, I know that the young-me-on-a-school-trip will reappear and I’ll polish off my packed lunch before take-off. And secondly, there’s a deliberate pace to the giving out of meals and snacks, especially on long-distance, one designed to keep people passive, scores of them, packed together with the seat-kicking small children and friendly people who lie back seats for the duration.
[G] So I put myself in the hands of the catering companies, in full anticipation that whatever arrives will be fair to gloomy, even in upper classes. Ingredients do not respond well to the processes needed for in the air food and, due to cabins’(机舱) lower levels of humidity than most deserts, taste and smell are impacted so negatively that dishes have salt and sugar turned up to 11 while still managing to taste and smell like stew(炖菜).
[L] I don’t know why they bother, given that most of us will eat and enjoy anything while in the air. Bring it all on: the dusty chocolates, stiff little sandwiches, chewy eggs and bacon that looks as if it has a fungal(真菌) infection. Will it be “good”? Don’t make me laugh — my mouth is full.

在[L]段,作者用幽默的方式描述了飞机餐的缺点,如“stiff little sandwiches”和“bacon that looks as if it has a fungal infection”。作者用“Don’t make me laugh — my mouth is full”来调侃这些问题,表现了幽默感。
Is plane food good? Of course not. But in the air, my picky eating habits disappear. On the ground, I’m a food snob, ____1____ (select) about what I consume. But once I pass through the airport, my standards drop significantly. Even the lowest judgment ____2____ (seem) picky when I’m on a plane. One of the worst meals I’ve ever had was on a flight. Bread as appetizing as a sponge, yet I ate every bite ____3____ complaint. Why? Because I was on a plane. On the ground, I’m confident in my picky choices, ____4____ (refuse) to settle for less. But in the air, everything changes. I would never bring my own food on ____5____ flight—I’d eat it all before takeoff. Besides, the deliberate pace of meal service on long flights keeps passengers calm, even when ____6____ (pack) in with small children and lying back seatmates. So, I rely on the catering companies, knowing that ____7____ arrives will likely be disappointing, even in upper ____8____ (class). Ingredients don’t respond well to the processes needed for in-flight meals, ____9____ the low humidity in cabins makes everything taste pale. In the end, most of us will eat whatever we ____10____ (give) on a flight.
