B Though it’s common that new scientists get international experience as part of their postdoctoral work, acquiring international exposure during one’s PhD study is less common. But it can be rewarding. I’m in the final year of my PhD course in experimental physics. The PhD program is based at Loughborough University, the UK, but a big part of my experimental work is at the Max Planck Institute in Germany. Coming from England just after my bachelor’s degree in physics was a big step and somewhat risky. I wasn’t sure if it would help my career or suit my personal style. I was faced with a number of questions. My supervisors (导师), one in England and one in Germany, gave me great freedom to pick research topics and carry out my research at another institute. I was excited about going to the Max Planck Institute. Once the long road of the PhD is complete, I hope to have the confidence to compete in an increasingly multinational field in order to secure postdoctoral positions. Although moving abroad means reduced contact with my home university and research community, attending conferences in Britain has helped me network and develop a sense of community. It took some time to settle down, find an apartment, and get used to the local life, surroundings and a different language. In the lab, a simple task was complicated by the language barrier. Still, with persistence, it was an enriching experience both personally and professionally. The Max Planck Institute provided not only an exciting environment, but enough funding that helped expand the output of my research considerably. I had access to equipment and resources hard to find at many institutions. Thus far, I have no regrets. Doing a PhD abroad has improved my knowledge of physics and clarified my career aspirations (抱负). 24.How does the author find doing PhD study abroad? A.Very useful. B.Pretty common. C.Extremely difficult. D.Absolutely necessary. 25.What happened to the author when he first studied in Germany? A.He chose a difficult research topic. B.He had a hard time finding friends. C.He made some mistakes in his study. D.He became confused about his study and life. 26.How did the author’s experience in Britain help him adapt to the new life? A.By making him confident. B.By teaching him to socialize. C.By pulling him out of his comfort zone. D.By helping him find his passion for life. 27.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.Seeking a PhD Abroad B.Following the Desired Career Path C.Finding a Place to Further PhD Study D.Breaking through the Language Barriers C If you’ve ever seen a sparrow steal your dog food or a crow open a garbage bag, you get a sense of that some birds have learned to take advantage of new feeding opportunities—a clear sign of their intelligence. Scientists have long wondered why certain species of birds are more innovative than others, and whether these capacities stem from larger brains or from a greater number of neurons (神经元) in specific areas of the brain. It turns out that it’s a bit of both, according to a recent study by an international team that included members from McGill University published in Nature Ecology and Evolution. The researchers used a new technique to estimate the number of neurons in a specific part of the brain called the pallium in 111 bird species. The pallium in birds is equal to the human cerebral cortex (大脑皮层), which is involved in memory, learning, reasoning, and problem-solving, among other things. When these estimates about neuron numbers in the pallium were combined with information about over 4,000 feeding innovations, the team found that the species with the higher numbers of neurons in the pallium were also likely to be the most innovative. “The amount of time chicks spend in the nest as their brains develop might also play a crucial role in the evolution of intelligence,” says McGill University Emeritus Professor Louis Lefebvre who spent more than 20 years gathering examples of feeding innovations. “Larger species of crows and parrots, which are known for their intelligence, spend longer in the nest, which allows more time for the brain to grow and accumulate pallial neurons.” The results of the study help to deal with previously opposed views of the evolution and significance of brain size and show how a life-history perspective helps to understand the evolution of cognition. 28.What may a sparrow be thought of when it steals dog food? A.It is lovely. B.It is immoral. C.It is heartbroken. D.It is intelligent. 29.What did researchers do with the 111 bird species? A.Assessed the neurons in their pallium. B.Tested a new technology on their brain. C.Trained them to learn to feed individually. D.Compared their pallium with the human cerebral cortex. 30.What is behind the intelligence of larger bird species? A.Their large shape. B.More time in their nest. C.Their learning ability. D.More feeding innovations. 31.In which section may the text appear in a newspaper? A.Health. B.Society. C.Science. D.Culture. D A shadowy figure sits alone in a room, his face dimly lit by a computer screen. With a grin, he types in a series of computer commands, and in the blink of an eye, someone’s bank account is drained to zero. In today’s digital age, cyberattacks like this happen thousands of times per day. Hackers can steal money, information, or completely take control of a machine from anywhere in the world. However, not all hackers are villains. Some hackers, called white hat or ethical hackers, are individuals who make the most of their hacking skills to identify security vulnerabilities (漏洞) in hardware, software and networks. Their job is crucial in preventing cyberattacks and safeguarding sensitive information. The term “white hat” originated from old cowboy movies, where heroes wore white hats and villains wore black ones. Like the heroes in cowboy movies, white hats seek to stop the bad guys and save the day. White hat hackers only seek vulnerabilities legally, often working on open-source software or with authorized access to systems. Once these weak spots are identified, companies or individuals can take steps to prevent serious breaches and losses. White hat hackers use a variety of different techniques to keep the internet safe. Penetration testing, for example, allows them to mimic cyberattacks and uncover system weaknesses. Security scanning tools allow white hats to identify holes in a network’s security systems. Simulating denial-of-service attacks (DoS attacks) helps companies prepare for attacks against their websites. Many of the world’s top white hat hackers began their journeys on the wrong side of the law. A prime example is Kevin Mitnick. This notorious hacker once held the title of “most wanted hacker” in the U. S. due to his cybercriminal activities in 1995. However, after being arrested and spending five years in jail, his life took a remarkable turn. Mitnick decided to use his hacking skills for ethical purposes, eventually establishing his own cybersecurity consulting company. If you aspire to be a white hat hacker, start by building a strong foundation in computer and network fundamentals. Good luck, computer cowboy! 32.What does the underlined word “villains” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.evil-doers. B.heroes. C.attackers. D.victims. 33.What can we learn about white hat hackers? A.They wear white hats in cowboy movies. B.They do everything to safeguard people’s information. C.They legally use their professional skills to help people. D.They find vulnerabilities for personal gain without doing harm. 34.People skilled in computer and network can’t be top white hat hackers unless ______. A.they obey the law B.they identify security weak points C.they take measures to stop serious losses D.they build their own cybersecurity consulting companies 35.What is the purpose of the text? A.To teach us how to stay secure online. B.To tell us how to be top white hackers. C.To warn us of the dangers of cyberattacks. D.To introduce defenders of the digital world. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Have you ever considered what it would be like to be unable to smile? I hadn't, up until a few months ago, when I found that I actually couldn’t. I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy-A relatively unknown condition that paralyses one half of the face. This was quite a shock and depressed me enormously. 36 , the story is not about how tough life is, but how awesome it is when God challenges you in different ways. Anyway, smiling is a part of everyday life for me. It is my way of greeting people, of laughing, silent communication and consolidation. 37 . Is it the lifting of the sides of a person’s mouth, the twinkling of the eye, or is it something beyond...or should I say behind the physical smile? 38 , I came up with the conclusion that a genuine smile is not merely characterized by the upturning of the corners of the mouth, but by the actions, words, and thoughts of the smiler. This equipped me with hope and confidence. The reason was that I was aware smiling is not just an outward expression, but an inward lifestyle. With this in mind, I set to learning how to smile through my actions. There are a few things I had to change, but it is thanks to this challenge God has given me that I have grown closer to him. 39 . I would really encourage you to smile more often and not just with your face! 40 . For instance, Smile Cards with a chocolate bar/bookmark/bible verse/voucher! He has been drawing crowds to the race track for years. But his rise to fame isn’t just being fast on the speedway. He’s breaking barriers on the track for those with disabilities. Riley has autism (自闭症). Simple tasks like tying his shoes are extremely complicated for him, but when you put him in a race car — a complex, delicate piece of machinery — he’ll blow your mind. I first met Riley and his father Jason at the local karting (卡丁车运动) track in 2014. I still remember how excited Riley was to have me and my cameraman there filming his every move. He was a karting car racer back then. He could barely talk to me, let alone look at me. However, even though Riley was quiet and shy, I knew he was going to be something big. The karting track is where Riley’s racing care er began. His dad just wanted to give him something to focus his energy on. Riley has always loved cars. He has been enthusiastic about them since he started to learn to walk. So why not try karting? The minute Riley hit the gas, he was attracted. Little did Riley and his father realize this was going to change their lives forever. In Riley’s mind, everything moves fast. Slowing things down makes things difficult and frustrating. But the minute Riley slid into that karting car, everything went well. He’d found his calling and it put him on the podium (领奖台), so many times that he would need a separate room just for his trophies (奖杯). Riley’s journey on the track soon took him from fast karting cars to really fast cars. He became the first person with autism in Canada to get his race car licence. It opened up the track for Riley to drive in the big leagues. Riley was now racing across North America, making the podium almost every time. He was an impressive force on the track, but an even more impressive person off the track. 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 When Riley started winning race after race, people wanted to know who this kid was. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Riley’s story brought a ray of hope to families having children with autism. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 试卷第1页,共3页 试卷第1页,共3页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 参考答案: 1.A 【原文】W: Tim, did you check the proposal? Bang Radio is organized into several key departments: Broadcasting, Editing, Technology, Network Information, and Planning. Together, these teams collaborate to produce great programming for both our faculty and student body. As I approach my final year at university, I’m especially grateful to have spent my campus years with Bang Radio by my side. This year, we’re excited to open our doors to new members across all departments. You’ll find a QR code on the top right corner of the flyer you’re holding. Scanning it will take you to our official account, where you can learn more about each department’s role, explore team-building activities, and, most importantly, submit your application. They were amazed by his incredible talent and the way he maneuvered the car with such precision and control. Despite the challenges he faced in his daily life, Riley’s passion for racing shone through, inspiring others to see beyond the limitations that autism can impose. His success on the track not only earned him admiration from his peers but also served as a powerful reminder that individuals with disabilities have immense potential waiting to be unlocked. Riley’s story quickly spread, and he became a symbol of inspiration, showing that with the right support and opportunities, anyone can excel in their chosen field. Riley’s story brought a ray of hope to families having children with autism. It showed them that their children, too, could find their unique talents and passions, and that these could be nurtured to achieve great things. For many, Riley became a beacon of inspiration, proving that autism is not a barrier to success but rather a part of a person’s identity that can coexist with their strengths and abilities.
