Every year, an average American produces more than 250 pounds of plastic waste. Recycling is part of the solution, but many of us are confused about what can be recycled and what can’t.
Plastic film
At the store we find it covering vegetables, meats and cheeses. It’s common, but it can’t be recycled because it’s hard to deal with at the MRF The thin and soft film gets stuck around the equipment and can bring it to a stop.
Plastic bags
Plastic bags—like those used for bread, sandwich as well as grocery bags—create similar problems for recycling machines as thin plastic film. Therefore, most of the plastic bags end up in landfills and oceans.
Yogurt and butter cups
These containers often mix with other kinds of materials. It’s not possible to separate them. In addition, this type of packaging flattens out on the MRF’s conveying belt and can bring the equipment to a stop, too.
Beverage (饮料) bottles
These containers are firm. They don’t flatten out like yogurt cups and they’re made from one kind of plastic that recyclers can easily sell for making products such as carpet, clothing or even more plastic bottles.
Warning: Be aware that we cannot recycle as much as we want. For example, plastic bottles are a highly desirable product for recyclers, but just about a third finds their way into the MRFs. Therefore, it’s more important for us to reduce packaging.
1.What do the first two kinds of packaging have in common?
A. They are used for the same products.
B. They are mixed with other materials.
C. They are too thin and soft to be recycled.
D. They are usually recycled in special MRFs.
2.Which can be recycled easily?
A. Plastic film. B. Beverage bottles.
C. Plastic bags. D. Yogurt and butter cups.
3.What does the author hope us to do in the last paragraph?
A. Reduce packaging. B. Try to build more MRFs.
C. Use recyclable bags. D. Separate the waste properly.
根据Plastic film部分中“It’s common, but it can’t be recycled because it’s hard to deal with at the MRF (材料回收厂). The thin and soft film gets stuck around the equipment and can bring it to a stop. (虽然很常见,但在材料回收厂很难处理,因此无法回收。薄膜和软膜会粘在设备周围,导致设备停止工作)”和Plastic bags部分“Plastic bags—like those used for bread, sandwich as well as grocery bags—create similar problems for recycling machines as thin plastic film. (用于面包、三明治和作为杂货袋的塑料袋和塑料薄膜一样,会对回收机器造成类似的问题)”可知,塑料薄膜和塑料袋太薄太软,会粘在回收设备周围,导致设备停止工作,所以无法回收。故选C项。
2.B 细节理解题。根据Beverage (饮料) bottles部分“These containers are firm. They don’t flatten out like yogurt cups and they’re made from one kind of plastic that recyclers can easily sell for making products such as carpet, clothing or even more plastic bottles. (这些容器很结实。它们不像酸奶杯那样扁平,制作它们的塑料被回收者回收后,可以用来制作地毯、衣服、塑料瓶等产品)”可知,饮料瓶易回收。故选B项。
3.A 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Therefore, it’s more important for us to reduce packaging. (因此,减少包装对我们来说更重要)”可知,作者希望我们减少包装。故选A项。

Can you survive an unannounced storm? Although there is expert broadcasting and we have cell phones, there are still some instances (情况) when the violent weather takes us by surprise.
While most Atlantic hurricanes form off the coast of Africa giving plenty of early warning, sudden Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico hurricanes form and move rapidly in less than a day’s time, endangering everyone and everything in their path.
Oil workers were trapped off the shore (海岸) when sudden storms appeared. Natural scientists have been stuck in coastal areas without storm warning. Ten years ago, a Texas National Guard group was trapped on the beach by rain-forced flooding and had to ride out (经受得住) a major hurricane during a training exercise. There’ve been a few instances when travelers were trapped on an island or in a coastal area and unable to escape in time.
Escaping from the storm-threatened areas is generally a choice for most of us—but not for all. Each year thousands of islanders across the Caribbean face the danger of hurricanes without so much as a public shelter to hide in. Most ride out the storm in their homes.
But there’re a few things you can do to prepare yourself for some unexpected emergencies. Being prepared for the unexpected may be your best and only defense. If you’re headed outdoors for a few days or weeks, you should always carry a flashlight with extra batteries, a Beidou device, and a basic medical box. If you’re traveling in your car, remember you may suffer high winds. You’d better not stay inside to avoid being blown away along with your car. Keeping your head and your courage up is essential (必要的) to survival in any type of danger. Let common sense guide you and always be prepared for the worst.
4.According to the text, most Atlantic hurricanes _____________.
A. form in the Caribbean Sea B. develop off the coast of Africa
C. come from Gulf of Mexico D. are from the Pacific Ocean
5.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. People trapped by sudden storms. B. The bad situations of oil workers.
C. The Texas National Guard group. D. The danger of traveling on an island.
6.What can we learn from the passage?
A. We can get through the storm because of the expert broadcasting.
B. Being prepared for the unexpected is likely to be our best and only defense.
C. Escaping from the storm-threatened areas is a choice for all of us in general.
D. We should stay inside the car to avoid being blown away in high winds.
7.What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To give some advice. B. To encourage traveling.
C. To give some warnings. D. To understand the danger of storms.
根据第二段“While most Atlantic hurricanes form off the coast of Africa giving plenty of early warning, sudden Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico hurricanes form and move rapidly in less than a day’s time, endangering everyone and everything in their path. (虽然大多数大西洋飓风都是在非洲海岸附近形成的,可以提供充足的预警,但突然出现的加勒比海和墨西哥的湾飓风在不到一天的时间内形成并迅速移动,危及其路径上的每个人和所有事物)”可知,大多数大西洋飓风都是在非洲海岸附近形成的。故选B。
5.A 段落大意题。根据第三段“Oil workers were trapped off the shore (海岸) when sudden storms appeared. (突然出现暴风雨时,石油工人被困在海岸附近。在没有风暴预警的情况下,自然科学家被困在沿海地区。十年前,德克萨斯州国民警卫队的一个小组在一次训练演习中被困在海滩上,遭遇暴雨引发的洪水,不得不经受一场大飓风。有几次旅行者被困在岛上或沿海地区,无法及时逃脱)”可知,第三段主要举了一些突然被风暴困住的人们的例子。故选A。
根据最后一段中的“Being prepared for the unexpected may be your best and only defense. (为意外做好准备可能是你最好也是唯一的防御)”可知,为意外做好准备可能是我们最好也是唯一的防御。故选B。
7.A 写作意图题。根据最后一段中的“But there’re a few things you can do to prepare yourself for some unexpected emergencies. (但是你可以做一些事情来为一些意想不到的紧急情况做好准备)”可知,最后一段的目的是给出一些建议。故选A。

The sharp fin (鳍). The rows upon rows of sharp teeth. The large black eyes. The sharks you see on television in Jaws or Discovery’s “Shark Week” are not the friendliest looking creatures. They aren’t exactly an animal you want to find near you while swimming in the ocean. Despite their portrayals (刻画) in movies and popular culture, sharks are complicated, misunderstood creatures that are weaker than they appear.
One very common misunderstanding about sharks is their desire to hunt humans. Actually when sharks attack humans, it is because they mistake a human for their normal prey (猎物), seals or dolphins. They don’t seek out humans on purpose. Statistically, you are more likely to be struck by lightning than be bitten by a shark.
Sharks are very important to the ocean as they are at the top of the food chain. Some sharks even control the balance of an ecosystem through fear alone. Tiger sharks in Australia help protect seagrass meadows from turtles. Turtles eat the seagrass and without the sharks, will destroy these meadows. When tiger sharks are present though, the turtles are scared away, holding back their appetite for seagrass and protecting its growth.
Though sharks have a reputation for being very scary to humans, the sad truth is that they should be scared of humans. The number of sharks in the ocean is steadily dropping. There are a few reasons for this. For one, they mature quite slowly, over several years, and produce relatively few young. For another, overfishing of sharks is happening because more and more people want their fins. About 100 million sharks are killed every year according to National Geographic. Shark fin is a way for people to show off their wealth. Shark fins are also believed to have medicinal benefits, though there is no evidence or proof that they actually do.
8.What do most people think about sharks?
A. They are ugly. B. They are important.
C. They are violent. D. They are complicated.
9.The author compares shark bites to lightning strikes to show they are _____________.
A. deadly B. rare C. unavoidable D. unpredictable
10.Why should sharks be scared of humans according to the author?
A. Humans keep sharks to show off.
B. Humans kill sharks in large quantities.
C. Humans catch sharks for medical research.
D. Humans are greater in number than sharks.
11.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. SOS: Save Our Sharks! B. Sharks: King of the Ocean
C. Shark Fins: An Ecological Crisis D. Sharks: Killers or Misunderstood?
根据第二段中的“They don’t seek out humans on purpose. Statistically, you are more likely to be struck by lightning than be bitten by a shark.(它们不会故意寻找人类。

As Ginni Bazlinton reached Antarctica, she found herself greeted by a group of little Gentoo penguins (企鹅) longing to say hello. These gentle, lovely gatekeepers welcomed her and kick-started what was to be a trip Ginni would never forget.
Ever since her childhood, Ginni, now 71, has had a deep love for travel. Throughout her career (职业) as a professional dancer, she toured in the UK, but always longed to explore further. When she retired from dancing and her sons eventually flew the nest, she decided it was time to take the plunge.
After taking a degree at Chichester University in Related Arts, Ginni began to travel the world, eventually getting work teaching English in Japan and Chile. And it was in Chile that she discovered she could get last-minute cheap deals on ships going to Antarctica from the islands off Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost tip of the South American mainland. “I just decided I wanted to go,” she says. “I had no idea about what I’d find there and I wasn’t nervous. I just wanted to do it. And I wanted to do it alone as I always prefer it that way.”
In March 2008, Ginni boarded a ship with 48 passengers she’d never met before, to begin the journey towards Antarctica. “From seeing the wildlife to witnessing sunrises, the whole experience was amazing. Antarctica left an impression on me that no other place has,” Ginni says. “I remember the first time I saw a humpback whale; it just rose out of the water like some prehistoric creature and I thought it was smiling at us. You could still hear the operatic sounds it was making underwater.”
The realization that this is a precious land, to be respected by humans, was one of the biggest things that hit home to Ginni.
12.Which of the following best explains “take the plunge” underlined in Paragraph 2?
A. Try challenging things. B. Take a degree.
C. Bring back lost memories. D. Stick to a promise.
13.What made Ginni decide on the trip to Antarctica?
A. Lovely penguins. B. Beautiful scenery.
C. A discount fare. D. A friend’s invitation.
14.What does Ginni think about Antarctica after the journey?
A. It could be a home for her. B. It should be easily accessible.
C. It should be well preserved. D. It needs to be fully introduced.
15.What is the text mainly about?
A. A childhood dream. B. An unforgettable experience.
C. Sailing around the world. D. Meeting animals in Antarctica.

You’ve reached that special time—you are getting ready to leave your job and move on to the next step in your career. But the end of an employment relationship is not necessarily the end of the relationship—with either the leader or the company. 1 I learned this relatively early in my career. At first, I was concerned I might lose my relationship with my now former boss, as I truly liked him. 2 My boss enthusiastically stayed in touch with me, and I helped him onboard my replacement and consulted on other projects. And now, more than 2 decades since I left, we are still in communication and friends.
That isn’t to say it always goes like this. When I left another role, in spite of my desire to maintain communication, my former supervisor seemed indifferent and the relationship ended. Sometimes your boss was a nightmare and you want to end the relationship. 3 You don’t owe the bad bosses anything. That’s exactly what I did when I was fired from a freelance role after I asked to be paid for my completed work!
But for the good bosses and organizations, the ones that invested in your talent and celebrated your achievements, things are different. 4 The breakup can become a breakthrough.
5 Especially when you have a truly delightful and respectful boss, you may feel guilt, sadness, or regret. But your overall responsibility is to yourself and your career—not to one organization. And given the right circumstances, it is almost always possible—and usually beneficial—to leave gracefully.
A. But it turned out that I had no reason to fear.
B. So the way I left contributed to this breakup.
C. It’s completely understandable not to engage further.
D. It is normal to have mixed emotions when you leave a job.
E. Here are some ways to build a win-win with your former leader.
F. The conclusion of the employment can start a new area of cooperation.
G. You can leave your company and keep the relationship at the same time.
1.G 根据上一句“But the end of an employment relationship is not necessarily the end of the relationship—with either the leader or the company.(但是,雇佣关系的结束并不一定意味着关系的结束——无论是与领导还是与公司)”可知,离职不一定意味着与公司和领导不再来往,G项“你可以离开你的公司,同时保持这段关系”与上句语义一致,符合语境。故选G项。
2.A 上文“At first, I was concerned I might lose my relationship with my now former boss, as I truly liked him.(起初,我担心我可能会失去我和我现在的前任老板的关系,因为我真的很喜欢他)”提到,作者离职时担心会和领导断了联系,结合下文“My boss enthusiastically stayed in touch with me(我的老板热情地和我保持联系)”可知,作者起初的担心完全没有必要,A项“但事实证明,我没有理由担心”符合语境。故选A项。
3.C 根据本段首句“That isn’t to say it always goes like this.(这并不是说它总是这样)”可知,本段讲述与上文相反的情况,即离职后不再和老板保持联系,结合空前一句“Sometimes your boss was a nightmare and you want to end the relationship.(有时候你的老板是个噩梦,你想结束这段关系)”可知,如果老板是个噩梦,离职时不再与老板联系是正常的,C项“不进一步接触是完全可以理解的”符合语境。故选C项。
4.F 根据空前一句“But for the good bosses and organizations, the ones that invested in your talent and celebrated your achievements, things are different.(但是对于好的老板和公司来说,那些投资你的才能并庆祝你的成就的老板和公司,事情就不一样了)”可知,本段与上文是转折关系,讲述从好公司离职后的情况,结合空后“The breakup can become a breakthrough.(终结可以是一种突破)”可知,F项“雇佣关系的结束可以开启一个新领域的合作”符合语境。故选F项。
5.D 根据空后一句“Especially when you have a truly delightful and respectful boss, you may feel guilt, sadness, or regret.(特别是当你有一个真正令人愉快、尊重你的老板时,你可能会感到内疚、悲伤或后悔)”可知,D项“当你离开一份工作时,有复杂的情绪是很正常的”符合语境。D项中的“mixed emotions”呼应下一句中的“guilt, sadness, or regret”。故选D项。
