Bamboo, which represents the life, art and spirit of the Chinese people, is being rediscovered and repurposed by young innovators (创新者) into products that hold new practical value. As an inheritor (继承人) of Daoming bamboo weaving (编织), a traditional craft from Sichuan Province, Zhang Dingjuan writes on social media, Bamboo weaving has more than one outcome, and beauty is in its diversity. “This young female bamboo artist makes strips of bamboo into earrings, phone cases and more.
She was fortunately able to learn from Zhao Sijin, a national representative of inheritors of the intangible cultural heritage of Daoming bamboo weaving. Zhang always has a clear goal in inheriting Daoming bamboo weaving. “My advantage is that I have learned some painting. As traditional Daoming bamboo weaving basically uses natural color, then why not add some color to it to create a different visual effect?” said Zhang.
Like her teacher Zhao, Zhang also stresses the importance of innovation in her creation. In her opinion, innovation must be based on a solid mastery of traditional weaving skills, so as not to lose the key feature of bamboo weaving.
When talking about how to balance innovation and tradition, Zhang noted that “I don’t need to think about it all the time during the process so it helps me naturally put the ideas into the works.” The work that best reflects this idea is her plum blossom mirror. “I needed a mirror which could have some decorative elements, so I wanted to try it with bamboo weaving” With the help of master Zhao, Zhang created her favorite plum blossom pattern.
“With the support of my teacher, I would try it with a determined mind, and I think this determination has been very important for me. The craft is very traditional, but breaking tradition requires courage. Though challenging, it is rewarding for young designers.”

After noticing that her students had problems focusing during the math class, a North Carolina teacher decided to channel (引导) their energy in a different way-cycling.
It doesn’t sound like a common thing to do during the math class, but Bethany Lambeth, a teacher from Wake County, said that ever since she installed (安装) cycling machines under her students’ desks, the quality of their work had improved greatly. Students are more focused and more importantly, they are no longer restless all the time.
“In the past, they were drumming on their desks or they were touching other people, but they don’t do that anymore. Their feet are getting out of the movement,” she said.
“The kids are not making fun of each other and they are able to get their activities through and get their work done,” the young educator added. “I think the world is changing a lot and the kids need to be able to do something different.”
Lambeth installed the cycling machines at the end of last year, paying around $150 for each.
Judging by the results observed by the Wake County teacher, this might be a way the educational officials are particularly excited about the role that cycling machines have played and think these can play in special education classes.

A Chinese medical research team has developed a model using artificial intelligence(AI) technology to speed up and automatic blood analysis, allowing labs to provide faster and more correct feedback to doctors.
Hospital labs generally test millions of blood cells for disease diagnosis every day, which is a repeated task usually performed by hand by trained physicians who check blood samples through microscopies, one after another.
The new AI model has been considered as a breakthrough development, as it has the potential to greater change how labs analyze blood samples, simplifying the evaluation process and finding potential abnormal conditions with great efficiency.
A blood smear is a traditional examination used to look for abnormalities in blood cells. It is an important way to discover blood system disorders. However, the current analysis of blood smear images under a microscope is time-consuming and mainly relies on the skills and experience of physicians. Many Chinese clinics at the grassroots level are lacking well-trained professionals, resulting in a low rate of diagnosis.
With 2,500 microscopic blood smear images of patients, researchers developed the AI-assisted model. “The AI has learned to recognize which cells are normal or abnormal with an accuracy rate of over 90 percent in a shorter time than human eyes,” said Peng Xiangui, leader of the research team.
Peng went on to explain that to train and test the AI model, his team fed it with data involving 300,000 red blood cells collected over the past five years. The results showed that it can accurately identify 49 types of abnormal blood cells, covering most of the common diseases seen in the clinic.
In addition to reducing human labor, Peng believes that such a medical AI model will assist inexperienced physicians in reaching the level of an expert and increase their work efficiency. Besides, the AI database can store unlimited information, making diagnosis more scientific and accurate.
12. .Which of the following is the advantage of the new AI model?
A. Cheaper price. B. Higher efficiency. C. Clearer images. D. Better handling.
13. Why does the blood smear lead to a low rate of diagnosis at the grassroots level?
A. It’s hard to find abnormal cells. B. Many clinics don’t have professional devices.
C. It’s a traditional and backward method. D. Many clinics lack skilled physicians.
14. What can we infer from Peng’s words?
A. He thinks highly of the new AI model. B. The new AI model has been widely used.
C. Inexperienced physicians are no match for the Al model. D. It’s necessary to keep the AI database safe.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. AI helps improve accuracy in blood testing. B. New AI models can cure more diseases
C. Much progress has been made in medical treatment D. Physicians will treat patients more quickly and better
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. A

4. What does Zhang Dingjuan think of bamboo weaving’s beauty?
A. Unique. B. Various. C. Spiritual. D. Meaningful.

B. By making completely new innovation.
C. By following her teacher’s advice.

The kids obviously love the new “toys”. Sofia Fedele, one of Lambeth’s students, said cycling helps her focus on her work during the class “Pedaling (踩踏板) is much better and it keeps me exercising and focused,” she said. Quinn Spear, another student in Lambeth’s class, also acknowledged the health benefits of cycling during the class. He said that he had pedaled 5.5 miles and burned 133calories,all before 10 am.
