"It was written in some sense,"Sophie Blake,a physics professor, would end up in observational
cosmology-the study of the origin and development of the universe using specialized telescopes."I'm
not going to lie.My father was a physicist. My mother's an astronomer. But no kid wants to be like
their parents,"she jokes,semi-seriously.
Blake always enjoyed building things like a child engineer. It wasn't unusual for her to experiment
with her father's research equipment. She thanks,in part, her short attention period for her
inquisitiveness,"I am always looking for something.
For the last few years,Blake has been searching for signs of the universe's early existence-from
the birth of the first stars to the“cosmic(字宙的)dark ages'”一and she's building her own equipment
to explore beyond the known universe, focusing on its distant past with novel radio technology.Since
2017,Blake and her team have been engineering and planting radio telescopes in two of the Earth's
most remote (and quietest)locations for the best shot at hearing the earliest voice of the universe.
Initially,Blake planned a PhD in particle()physics but switched direction after a visit to a lab
with messy equipment and tools everywhere at the California Institute of Technology."I didn't know
about observational cosmology then but thought,'Whatever this is,I want to do that.'"
She spent a year at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, after conducting experiments of a
balloon-borne microwave telescope launched from MeMurdo."That really inspired my love for remote
places,”she said
Eventually, she wanted to engineer her own instruments. After her year at the South Pole.she
joined the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. At that time, the site decision was made for
the largest radio telescope group on Earth.
"This was also a leap of faith because I really couldn't continue the work I was doing before,"
Blake recalls."I had never done radio before but I thought,'Let me give this a try and see how it
g0es.’”
24.What can we infer from Blake's joke in paragraph 1?
A.She follows in her parents'footsteps.B.She develops an interest in telescopes.
C.She lies about her parents'professions.D.She lives up to her parents'expectations.
25.What does the underlined word "inquisitiveness"in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Talent.
B.Courage.
C.Curiosity.
D.Intelligence.
26.What stimulated Blake's passion for distant places?
A.Her visit to a lab in a university.
B.Her wish to build her own equipment.
C.Her faith in hearing the cosmic sound.
D.Her experience at a South Pole Station.
27.Which of the following best describes Blake?
A.Confident and caring.
B.Generous and optimistic.
C.Modest and open-minded.
D.Adventurous and determined.

What if you threw a party and nobody came, but that's exaetly what you expected? That's
precisely what famous physicist Stephen Hawking did on June 28.2009.He rented a space at
e
Cambridge University and got balloons and decorations. Then he sat in the empty room for a few hours
and left.
Essentially,Hawking's time travel party was held for our future generations, should they ever
crack the mystery of time travel.one of the biggest challenges faced by modern physes. The setup may
seem silly, but Hawking was actually experimenting. That's because our current knowledge of physics
does not strictly forbid time travel.Indeed,in some cases,it's clearly allowed.
The general theory of relativity provides several situations that might enable tme travel into the
past,One involves a limitlessly long cylinder(圆柱体),which rotates(旋转)fast enough to allow you
to travel a path around it and end up in the past.Another is the creation of a worm hole with different
time at each end, allowing you to travel down one end and exit into the past.
Since nobody showed up to Hawking's time travel party,we have a few possible conclusions:
1.Time travel into the past is not allowed. Our future generations will discover the fundamental
reason why time travel into the past is forbidden and sigh regretfully that they could not accept
Hawking's invitation.
2.Time travel into the past is allowed, but we figure it out so far into the future that Hawking's
invitation doesn't survive long enough.
3.Time travel into the past is allowed, but we never figure it out.Maybe our human intellect isn't
quite powerful enough to detect the deeper mysteries of the universe.
4.Time travel into the past is allowed, but there are rules.Maybe it is exceptionally complicated
to build a time machine,or we can send signals into the past, but not entire persons.
Of course,if someone from the future had shown up,it would've been a big deal. But,as
experiments go.Hawking's party wasn't a total failure. In this case,it showed that the mystery of
time travel will remain unsolved-at least for the time being.
28.Why did Stephen Hawking throw the party?
3
A.To publicize his fame.
B.To test a physics assumption.
C.To welcome certain visitors.
D.To benefit future generations.
29.What does paragraph 3 mainly discuss regarding time travel into the past?
3
A.Its vital significance.
B.Its possible methods.
C.Its potential influence.
D.Its practical applications.
30.What possibly led to nobody coming to Hawking's party?
3
A.Lost invitation.
B.Disturbed signals.
C.Powerful intelligence.
D.Insufficient attention.
31.What does the author think of Hawking's party?
A.It was valuable.
B.It was impractical.
C.It was confusing.
D.It was transformative.

There have been concerns that video games might damage our mental and physical well-being.
Recently, more researches have revealed these worries are largely unfounded.Nevertheless, there
exists a deep-seated idea that playing them rots your brain-it's easy to view them as an unproductive
waste of time. But in reality,is the opposite the case?
For years."brain-training"games and apps have been convinced to be an effective way to boost our
cognitive()abilities or intelligence,as it's thought that by playing a series of quickfire puzzles
focusing on things like memory or spatial awareness, over time our abilities in these areas will improve:
theoretically,so will our general intelligence.
From a research viewpoint, the key lies in whether playing these sorts of games results in
"transfer"effects-"near"and "far"transfer effects:near effects relate to whether playing one memory
game results in improvements in other memory games, whereas far effects relate to whether playing
that game results in a general improvement in cognitive abilities. Some studies have pointed out brain-
training games show weak near effects. As for far effects, there's no convincing evidence this happens.
However.things get interesting when brain-training games are compared with video games. In a
2015 study comparing the brain-training game SmartP with the video game Maziz, researchers found
SmartP players didn't show boosts in problem-solving and spatial skills, but Mazr players did.
More recently,in 2020,researchers in Sweden studied data from some 9,000 children and found
that kids aged 9 or 10 who played video games for above-average amounts of time didn't show any
differences in intelligence compared with those playing less. Two years later, they discovered that by
12,the kids playing video games had 2.5 more IQ points than average.
Why video games result in improvements in cognitive abilities over more targeted games isn't
d
clear. One argument is to do with the amount of time invested:whereas brain-training apps tend to
deliver mini-games over a short time, video games have players engaged and require sustained levels of
格
attention and problem-solving.Despite some promising findings,it's currently unsafe to say that video
f
games make us smarter.Meanwhile, video games can offer both advantages and risks,so it's important
to be cautious and avoid making quick judgments.
32.What do people usually think of brain-training games?
A.They are a waste of time.
B.They can improve our intelligence.
C.They are easily accessible.
D.They may enhance our concentration.
33.What do we know about Mazir players?
A.They demonstrated signs of far effects.
B.They had a great talent for video games.
C.They exhibited boosts in gaming skills.
D.They proved the importance of near effects.
34.What does the study in 2020 reveal?
A.The limited effeets of age on IQ points.
B.The negative impacts of video games.
C.The advantages of playing more games.
D.The benefits of video games over time.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Do Brain-training Games Really Work?
B.Video Games or Brain-training Games?
C.Could Video Games Make Us Smarter?
D.Should We Stop Playing Video Games?

Exercise needs differ from person to person due to a number of reasons.36
Genetic(基因的)variability
Genes play a very big role in determining a person's response to exercise.37 Some people
may naturally prefer endurance activities(耐力训练),while others may have a genetic make-up that
favours strength exercises. Therefore, different genes determine different reactions.
Age
38
Children and adolescents may have different needs for growth and development
compared to adults or older people focusing on bone density()and functional abilities. When you
are at different ages, you have to choose different exercise.
Personal goals
39 Most people have their own goals when exercising and the plan they follow needs to
meet those goals.Personal preferences also come into play,as some people prefer exercising in a team
or class, while others prefer solo workouts.
In between exercise
Activity levels between workouts will also influence a person's exercise needs and how much they
eat.If you're in an active job,for example, you might not need as much exercise as someone who often
sit.Recovery is also important,as this is where the majority of your gains are made.40
Recognizing and accepting these differences is vital for tailoring effective and sustainable exercise
programmes that meet a person's needs.
A.Not everyone wants to get faster or be stronger.
B.There are various ways to meet people's needs.
C.So what are the factors that contribute to varying needs?
D.Motivation and stress level also affect your recovery often.
E.Exercise requirements change over the course of a person's life.
F.Everyone has different recovery times, even after doing the same workout.
G.Gene influenees factors such as musele fiber composition and other capacities.

On Monday morning I wore my favourite dress to school for the first time since I had started at
Edison Middle School.I said good morning to our headmaster,Mr.Jordan,at the school entrance.
With a genuine smile that reached his eyes,he greeted me by name, inquiring about my weekend and
showing a sincere interest in my day ahead.
That was really comforting! It was the day of the poetry festival, and I was excited. At my old
school,I had won the poetry award every year.I'm horrible at sports, and too shy to be popular-but
I do write good poetry, although I never told anyone here about it yet.
The poem I wrote for the Edison Festival was about my dad.I wished I would surprise my
classmates and Mrs.Baker,my English teacher.
When Mrs.Baker called on me,I was so nervous that I had to swallow about ten times before I
could speak. But once I started,I didn't even bother to look at my paper.I'd spent so much time
perfecting the rhymes that I knew the poem by heart.
I had just started the third line when I noticed Mrs.Baker's expression change. She looked at me
with a mixture of appreciation and disbelief.I stopped in the middle of a word and waited for her to say
something.
"Linda, you are supposed to be reading a poem you made up yourself, not reciting something you
learned.That is called plagiarism(别窃)!”
"Oh,but it's an original one.I did make it up:it's about my dad."I heard a"Yeah.right!"from
somewhere behind me,and someone else laughed.I opened my mouth to explain, but no words came
out.
"Perhaps you could step out and gather your thoughts, and when you feel ready,we can discuss
this with a clear mind,"said Mrs.Baker.
I'd been standing outside for 5 minutes when Mr.Jordan came over to ask me what happened.

feel
sad.
“Sharing
your

is
a
brave
thing
to
do,
Linda,”
he
said
warmly.
“Even
if
it

your

is
admirable.
Remember,

Trust

His
words
comforted
me,
giving
me
a

affirmation
I
desperately

in
that
moment
of
doubt

frustration.
Inspired
by
his
words,
I
gathered
my

Mrs.

I

her

Taking

I

explained

crafted
the
poem
about
my

with
love

care.
“Id

I
said
with
determination.
This

I
recited

clearly,
letting

As
I
finished,
there
was
a
moment

silence
before
applause
broke
out,
genuine

warm.
“Sorry

that,”
Mrs.

said
sincerely.
“Your

The

have
to
pay
12
months
of
rent
per
year.
Our
accommodation
contracts

you
wil
Register
and
click
to
find
out
about
Colege
facilities
and
student
life
on
the

was
a
physicist.
My
mothers
an
astronomer.
But
no
kid
wants
to
be
like
their
parents,”
she
jokes,
semi-seriously.
故选A。
am
always
looking
for
something.”

realy
inspired
my
love
for
remote
places.”中的that指

had
never
done
radio
before

I
thought,

shown

general
theory
of
relativity
provides
several
situations
that

enable
time

into
the
past.”

travel
into
the
past
is
alowed,
but
we
figure
it
out
so
far
into
the
future
that
Hawkings
invitation
doesnt
survive
long
enough.”
as
experiments
go,
Hawkings
party
wasnt
a
total
failure.
In
this
case,
it
showed
that
the
mystery
of
time
travel
wil
remain
unsolved
—
at
least
for
the
time

cognitive
abilities.”
