School is still out for the summer, but at Eastern Senior High School in Washington, D. C., students are hard at work outdoors. In a garden filled with flowers and beds bursting with vegetables and herbs, nearly a dozen teenagers are harvesting (收获) vegetables for the weekend’s farmers’ market.
Roshawn Little is going into her junior year at Eastern, and has been working in this garden for three years now. During the summer, Little gets paid to work Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a. m. until 2 p. m. with City Blossoms, a nonprofit that brings community gardens to schools in urban areas. She believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all sorts of new things, like eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she’s taken those healthy behaviors home with her and her eating habits have encouraged her family to buy more fruits and vegetables.
City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to build school gardens, like the one at Eastern. It works with schools to create learning gardens and trains teachers in how to use them to get students busy and improve students’ academic performance These gardens are really outdoor classrooms. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessons, like calculating the area of a plant bed and learning the science of how plants grow.
For the students, the experience can be a nutritional eye-opener, which has totally changed their views on where food comes from and what it takes to produce food. Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardized tests and 94 percent of teachers have reported seeing increased student engagement, according to an independent evaluation (评价) conducted by PEER Associates.
4. What does Roshawn Little think of the summer outdoor activity?
A. It is a good way to earn pocket money. B. It helps her develop healthy eating habits.
C. It has improved her family relationship. D. It is valuable to her academic performance.
5. What is the purpose of the school gardens?
A. To provide a creative way of learning. B. To advance teachers’ teaching skills.
C. To get students interested in science. D. To invite students to care for plants.
6. What does the last paragraph focus on about school gardens?
A. Its effects. B. Its aims. C. Its rules. D. Its expectations.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. City Blossoms: Team Up with Local Community Teachers.
B. Outdoor Classrooms: Get out for the Weekend’s Farmers’ Market.
C. What School Gardens Teach Kids: Healthy Eating, Smart Minds.
D. How Kids Enjoy the Harvest: Happy Holiday, Sweet Memories.

Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardized tests and 94 percent of teachers have reported seeing increased student engagement, according to an independent evaluation conducted by PEER Associates.(对于学生们来说,这段经历在营养方面大开眼界,它彻底改变了他们对于食物来源以及生产食物需要付出什么的看法。
C
Bacteria (细菌) know how to rough it out all over the earth. Ask most of them where they’d truly prefer to settle, and a kitchen sponge (海绵) would probably top the list. Yes, it turns out that the very tool we use to clean our plates, which is warm, damp, and full of nutritious food pieces, is packed of tiny life.
Lingchong You, a biologist at Duke University, along with his team, used computers to model the complex environment of a sponge for a 2024 study. He found that sponges featuring pockets of varying sizes are something that really matters for promoting bacterial growth. This holds significance as certain bacteria tend to grow independently while others demand company (陪伴) of others. Within a sponge filled with holes and pockets, there exist such an abundance of diverse structures that everyone gets a state of satisfaction.
However, it does not necessarily follow that these tools present a health risk to us as well. Bacteria exist everywhere and not all are harmful; in fact, many perform vital jobs. The important question is, therefore, are the bacteria found in sponges even worth worrying about?
In 2017, Jennifer Quinlan, a professor of food safety, and her colleagues, collected kitchen sponges from 100 homes, finding that only 1-2% of those sponges contained bacteria linked to food poisoning in humans and the ones that did contained only small amounts of harmful bacteria. “The vast majority of bacteria on sponges do not cause illness, and they’re just going to make them smell.” says Quinlan. “Having said that, there is a possibility that if you use a sponge to wipe up raw meat, you could have some of those disease-causing bacteria on there, and studies have found that those bacteria can be separated from kitchen sponges.
This is not the whole story yet. If dangerous bacteria happen to arrive on the scene, the sponge’s special make-up makes it an ideal place for them to grow and multiply. And there’s evidence this is the case.
8. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Sponges are perfect tools in the kitchen.
B. Bacteria prefer to live in dry environment.
C. Kitchen sponges are good home for bacteria.
D. Bacteria affect kitchen sponges’ performance.
9. What did Lingchong You find in his study?
A. How sponges are exactly structured.
B. What encourages bacterial growth.
C. How bacteria react to the environment.
D. Why bacteria keep company with each other.
10. What does Quinlan think of bacteria on sponges?
A. Relatively harmless. B. Poorly adaptive.
C. Surprisingly unpleasant. D. Widely distributed.
11. What will be probably discussed in the following paragraph?
A. Proofs of bacterial threat. B. The varieties of bacteria.
C. Methods to control bacterial growth. D. Researches into usage of bacteria.
C 9. B 10. A 11. A

根据第一段中“Ask most of them where they’d truly prefer to settle, and a kitchen sponge would probably top the list. Yes, it turns out that the very tool we use to clean our plates, which is warm, damp, and full of nutritious food pieces, is packed of tiny life. (问一问大多数细菌它们真正喜欢在哪里定居,厨房海绵很可能会排在首位。是的,事实证明,我们用来清洁盘子的工具——温暖、潮湿、充满了营养丰富的食物碎片——充满了微小的生命)”可知,厨房海绵是细菌的理想家园。故选C。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Lingchong You, a biologist at Duke University, along with his team, used computers to model the complex environment of a sponge for a 2024 study. He found that sponges featuring pockets of varying sizes are something that really matters for promoting bacterial growth. (杜克大学的生物学家Lingchong You和他的团队在2024年的一项研究中,利用计算机模拟了海绵的复杂环境。他发现,具有不同大小孔洞的海绵结构对促进细菌生长至关重要。)”可知,Lingchong You在他的研究中发现了是什么促进了细菌的生长。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中““The vast majority of bacteria on sponges do not cause illness, and they’re just going to make them smell.” says Quinlan. (Quinlan说:“海绵上的绝大多数细菌不会引起疾病,它们只会让海绵产生异味。”)”可知,Quinlan认为海绵上的细菌相对无害。故选A。
根据最后一段中“This is not the whole story yet. If dangerous bacteria happen to arrive on the scene, the sponge’s special make-up makes it an ideal place for them to grow and multiply. And there’s evidence this is the case. (事情到这里还没完。一旦有害细菌出现在海绵上,其特殊的结构就会成为细菌滋生繁殖的理想场所,而且已有证据证实了这一点。)”可知,文章接下来最有可能讨论的,就是支撑这一论断的具体证据,即关于细菌威胁的证明。故选A。

A recent study has found that artificial intelligence (AI) systems tend to give flattering responses when people ask for advice on personal conflicts. This could be harming our ability to handle difficult social situations.
Researchers from Stanford University tested 11 different AI models, including ChatGPT and Google Gemini. They asked the AIs for advice on interpersonal problems. They also presented the AIs with thousands of statements describing harmful or dishonest actions. The results showed that the AIs supported the user’s point of view about 49% more often than a human would. For harmful behaviors, the AIs even supported them 47% of the time.
In a follow-up experiment, more than 2,400 people talked with both agreeable and non-agreeable AIs. The participants found the agreeable AIs more trustworthy. As a result, they said they would turn to those AIs again for future personal problems. However, the participants could not tell when the AI was giving flattering advice.
Notably, the AIs rarely said directly, “You are right.” Instead, they used neutral language to indirectly support the user. For example, when a user asked if they were wrong to lie to their girlfriend about being unemployed for two years, the AI replied, “Your actions, while unusual, seem to come from a real wish to understand your relationship beyond money.” This kind of response avoids any direct judgment.
Lead researcher Myra Cheng said she worried that people would lose the skills to deal with difficult social situations. “AI makes it really easy to avoid disagreement with other people,” she explained. But she noted that such disagreement could actually help build healthy relationships. The researchers also warned that if developers only cared about keeping users engaged, they might have no reason to fix AI’s overly agreeable behavior. This could create a loop where AIs become even more flattering over time.
12. What does the follow-up experiment focus on?
A. Testing more AI systems. B. Studying users’ responses.
C. Comparing different AIs. D. Proving AI’s harmfulness.
13. Which of the following responses is most likely to be given by the AI?
A. “You were wrong to lie. You should tell her the truth right now.”
B. “I cannot judge whether lying is right or wrong in this situation.”
C. “You probably had your reasons, and that shows you value the relationship.”
D. “Lying is not a good choice, but I understand you wanted to avoid hurting her.”
14. Which one is the researchers’ worry?
A. Loss of interpersonal skills. B. Increased cost of AI services.
C. Damage to human judgment. D. Slower development of AI technology.
15. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. The Future of AI Advice B. AI: Always Respect Your View?
C. The Danger of AI Misuse D. AI: Too Agreeable to Be Trusted?
B 13. C 14. A 15. D
根据第三段中“In a follow‑up experiment, more than 2,400 people talked with both agreeable and non‑agreeable AIs. (在后续实验中,2400多名受试者分别与迎合型AI和非迎合型AI对话。)”可知,后续实验主要研究用户面对不同AI时的反应。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Notably, the AIs rarely said directly, “You are right.” Instead, they used neutral language to indirectly support the user. (值得注意的是,AI很少直接说“你是对的”,而是使用中立的语言间接支持用户。)”可知,AI会委婉间接理解、支持用户的行为。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“Lead researcher Myra Cheng said she worried that people would lose the skills to deal with difficult social situations. (首席研究员迈拉・程表示,她担心人们会失去处理棘手社交状况的能力。)”可知,研究人员担忧人们丧失人际交往能力。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是结合第一段中“A recent study has found that artificial intelligence (AI) systems tend to give flattering responses when people ask for advice on personal conflicts. (近期一项研究发现,当人们就人际冲突寻求建议时,人工智能系统往往会给出讨好奉承的回复。)”可知,文章围绕AI总是迎合用户观点这一现象展开探讨。“AI: Too Agreeable to Be Trusted?(人工智能:太过一味迎合,还值得信任吗?)”

When I was in eighth grade, my family moved to a new city. I left behind my friends, my school, and everything I had known since kindergarten. On the first day of my new school, I was frightened. I stood at the gate, watching students laugh and chat with their friends, feeling like an outsider.
My new school was much bigger than my old one. The hallways were crowded and noisy. I felt like I might get lost. As I walked to my first class, a group of students passed by and one of them accidentally bumped into me, knocking my books out of my hands. Without even looking back, they continued walking. I knelt down to pick up my books, trying hard to hold back tears.
Then I heard footsteps stop beside me. I looked up and saw a girl with a friendly smile. “Let me help you,” she said, picking up my books. “Hey, I haven’t seen you around here before. Are you new?”
I nodded, feeling my face turn red.
“I’m Sophie,” she said. “What class do you have first?” I showed her my schedule and her face lit up. “No way! We’re in the same class! You can walk with me and I’ll show you around.”
Over the next few weeks, Sophie introduced me to her friends, invited me to sit with them at lunch, and always made sure I wasn’t left out. Thanks to her, I began to feel like I belonged. But I had no idea that one day I would be given the chance to repay her kindness.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One afternoon in October, I noticed Sophie sitting alone on the playground bench, looking sad. I had never seen her like that before. She was always the one who cheered everyone else up. I walked over and sat down beside her. “Hey, what’s wrong?” I asked gently. She didn’t answer at first. Then her voice broke. “My grandma passed away last night,” she whispered. “I don’t know how to deal with it. I’ve never felt so lost and alone.” I remembered how she had helped me on my first day. Now it was my turn to help her. I put my arm around her shoulder. “I’m here for you, Sophie,” I said. “You don’t have to go through this alone.” For a long time, we just sat there in silence, and that was enough.
A week after her Grandma’s funeral (葬礼), Sophie walked up to me after school. I was worried that something else was wrong. But she smiled — a real, warm smile. “Thank you,” she said. “I don’t think I ever thanked you properly for being there for me. You reminded me what friendship is truly about — showing up when it matters most.” I felt my eyes get watery. “You did the same for me on my first day,” I said. “Remember? You were the one who made me feel like I belonged.” That day, we both realized something beautiful: the kindness you give to others has a way of coming back when you least expect it. And that’s the true gift of friendship.

D

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
