He was holding down two jobs at the time — one with the city’s public works department, the other as a barber. Saturday was his busiest hair-cutting day, but he chose to donate his time and give free haircuts to unfortunate kids so they’d look neat on that first day of classes. But then he had a light bulb moment: “The kids should earn their free haircut by having to read a book to me,” Holmes said. The idea was so popular that he continued it the first Tuesday of every month for the next two years. Boys from five to ten years old would grab a favorite book, settle into the barber chair, and read aloud while Holmes was doing their hair. If they were puzzled over a word, Holmes was there to help. After the haircut, they’d review he book, from the characters and vocabulary to the themes — just like in school, only more fun. Holmes, who is married and has two sons, ages three and four, recognizes that not every parent has the time to read with their kids. Holmes admits he, too, benefits from the process. “There was this seven-year-old who struggled through his book, stuttering over words even though he didn’t have a stutter (口吃),” said Holmes. He had the boy take the book home and practice. When the child came back a few days later, “He read it with no problems. That inspires me.” Holmes and his family have recently moved to a Chicago suburb. When they get settled, he plans to take up his role as the Story-book Barber. “The way the world is today with guns and violence,” he says, “it’s a safe heaven for the kids, to come to the barbershop and read books.” 4. What do we know about Holmes two years ago? A. He had only one job. B. He earned a lot as a barber. C. He offered free haircuts to the poor kids. D. He was the organizer of Back to School Bash. 5. The example in Paragrap3 mainly proves that _______. A. Holmes is very strict with the kids B. Holmes also learns a lot from the kids C. being a fluent reader needs plenty of practice D. many kids have trouble in reading a storybook 6. What can we learn from the last Paragraph? A. Holmes is dissatisfied with the world today. B. Holmes’ barbershop will have some changes. C Holmes’ barbershop has won great popularity. D. Holmes will continue to be a storybook barber. 7. What is the best title for the text? A. The Storybook Barber B. Back to School Bash C. Reading Counts A Lot D. Care About the Kids C A recent survey has shown that more men are adopting cats than women in recent years. People used to think cats are preferred by women, and dogs are the trusty friends of men. However, a new research from UK Pet Food uncovered an obvious gender (性别) difference in pet adoption numbers — with more men choosing to adopt adult cats than women. Over the past four years, 1.5 million new male households have been benefiting from the company of an adult cat, compared to around 1 million female households. The research findings highlight the function of the bond that can exist between a man and his furry friend. Although you may be fond of kittens with their playful and innocent nature, there’s a convincing reason to adopt an adult cat, especially for men seeking a loyal and entertaining companion. Unlike the troublesome process of raising a kitten, adult cats come with their personalities fully formed. This means that from day one, you can enjoy the companionship of a furry friend that has already settled into their characters and behaviors. For men with busy schedules or limited time for pet training, an adult cat provides instant companionship without the demanding needs of a young kitten. They’re already litter-trained and accustomed to basic grooming routines, making them an ideal choice for busy men. Michael Bellingham, Chief Executive of UK Pet Food said: “I was interested to see that more men are adopting older cats. Our research this year highlights the profound impact of pets — from fighting with loneliness to having a positive effect on our mental health. We were surprised to see that one fifth of the people with mental illness we interviewed want pets to be included in prescriptions, which can help treat their problems.” So, for men considering bringing a furry companion into their life, adopting an adult cat might just be the perfect choice. 8. What can we know about the new research in paragraph 2? A. Compared to women, men prefers to adopt adult cats. B. Dogs are man’s most loyal friends of all time. C. Women are fond of being surrounded by lovely cats. D. Millions of households gain benefits from protecting pets. 9. What’s the reason for man to choose adult cats? A. They have the potential to care for their owners. B. They are innocent and loyal to the caring adults. C. They have fully developed personalities. D. They are a cure for rare diseases. 10. What can be inferred from Michael Bellingham’s words? A. Adult cats are the best option of pets for UK family. B. Pets have a good impact on people’s mental health. C. Adult cats demand less company from their busy owners. D. Cats are a priceless drug for physical problems in UK. 11. Which of the following phrases can replace “prescription” in paragraph 5? A. Job interviews. B. Text books. C. Personal preference. D. Medical guidance. D Loss of slow-wave sleep as you age may increase your risk of developing dementia (痴呆), according to a new study. “We found that aging was associated with a decline in the amount of the deepest stages of sleep, known as slow-wave sleep. We then found that people with greater declines in slow-wave sleep over time had a higher risk of getting dementia over the next 17 years of follow-up,” said Matthew Pase, senior author of the study. Slow-wave sleep is the third and fourth stages of sleep, which is important for brain health. During this stage, the body removes unwanted or harmful materials from the brain. “For the brain, this deep sleep is thought to be the most restorative,” said Dr Richard Isaacson, who wasn’t involved in the study. The researchers wanted to know whether chronic (慢性的) reductions in slow-wave sleep over time are linked to dementia risk in humans and whether dementia-related processes in the brain may contribute to getting less of this type of sleep. They studied 346 people with an average age of 69 and completed two overnight sleep studies—one between 1995 and 1998 and the second between 1998 and 2001—during which their sleep was monitored. The researchers also investigated whether any change in the amount of slow-wave sleep that participants got was associated with developing dementia up to 17 years after they completed the sleep studies. By that time, 52 participants had been diagnosed with dementia. Each percentage decrease in slow-wave sleep per year was linked to a 27 percent increased risk of developing dementia. The rate of slow-wave sleep loss accelerated (加速) from age 60, peaked from ages 75 to 80and slowed afterwards. “This is an important study yet again showing the impact of quality of sleep on a person’s risk of cognitive decline and dementia,” Isaacson said. “It’s important to not only pay attention to the total amount of sleep a person gets each night, but also monitor sleep quality as best as possible.” 12. What can we learn from the new study? A. The older you are, the less sleep you will have. B. Slow-wave sleep has been linked to the risk of dementia. C. The rate of slow-wave sleep loss keeps going up with age. D. The amount of sleep has an impact on the risk of dementia. 13. How did researchers get what they wanted? A. By making a comparison. B. By introducing a concept. C. By referring to another study. D. By making a survey. 14 What did Dr Richard Isaacson suggest? A. Sleep quality needs more attention. B. We should have enough sleep. C. The elderly should sleep more than the young. D. The amount of sleep is more important than sleep quality. 15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear? A. Sports. B. Health. C. Education. D. Environment. For many students, maths and science have always been boring and even difficult subjects. I’ve always loved running, so I was really happy when I found out I lived next to Central Park. It meant that every morning I could go for a run before I went to work. Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of robbers in the park, so usually I didn’t take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything? But one morning, my wife gave me a $10 bill and asked me to buy some bread on the way. It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging around. While I was running through the park, another jogger knocked into me. He apologized and continued running. For a while, I didn’t think too much of it. However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought it was kind of strange. The warning of robbers in the park occurred to me. “It could have been a robber!” I suddenly became alarmed, so I checked my pocket and found that the money was missing. Without thinking twice, I ran after that jogger. I finally caught up and held him by the arm. I shouted, “Give me the $10 bill! Now!” I am not usually a hot-headed (性急的) person, but I got really angry this time. I couldn’t believe the robbery was actually happening to me. Filled with anger, I shook my fist at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could. I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home, I couldn’t wait to tell my wife my story. “You won’t believe what happened to me,” I started with pride. She immediately stopped me, “I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.” Looking at the money on the table, I stood there, shocked. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ For several days, I waited at the same place. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力 AABCC BCCCA ACABC CACBA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 高二开学考英语 第一部分听力(共两节,满分30分) 做题时,先将答案标在试卷上。 1. A. 14. What did Dr Richard Isaacson suggest? A. Sleep quality needs more attention. B. We should have enough sleep. C. The elderly should sleep more than the young. D. The amount of sleep is more important than sleep quality. 15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear? A. Sports. B. Health. C. The 40. making 41. huger 42. to honor 43. known 44. to 45. has grown##has been growing 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 故填What。 故填The。 根据该句中的副词 even 以及 compared to most of times可知,此处应该用该形容词的比较级。 故填to honor。 此处为固定短语be home to... 故填to。 故填has grown/has been growing。 _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Dear Sir or Madam, I’m writing to apply to be a volunteer for the Chinese Painting Exhibition which will be held in your art gallery. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Looking at the money on the table, I stood there, shocked. For the rest of the day, I felt extremely guilty, with the innocent jogger and his “helplessness” on my mind. How could I be so rude to him without knowing the truth? Why was it that the jogger gave me the money? I still remember his frightened face when I scared him away like a monster. I decided to find a chance to apologize to him. The next morning, I got up and went to the park as usual, but not for jogging. I just hung around where I met that jogger, but in vain. For several days, I waited at the same place. But to my disappointment, he didn’t turn up. It was almost a week later before I finally spotted him again. I, the “robber”, gave the $10 bill back to him and said sorry to him again and again. Fortunately, he forgave me for what I had done to him and said, “Oh, it doesn’t matter.” Many years have passed, but I can still feel my cheeks burning with shame. From the experience I have learned that it is too early to judge a person before you know the truth. 词汇激活 行为类 ①归还:give back/return ②决定做:decide to do/make up one’s mind to do ③道歉:apologize/make an apology 情绪类 ①惊恐的:frightened/alarmed/scared ②内疚的: guilty/sinful 【点睛】【高分句型1】I still remember his frightened face when I scared him away like a monster.(运用了when引导的时间状语从句) 【高分句型2】It was almost a week later before I finally spotted him again.(运用了before引导的时间状语从句) 听力 AABCC BCCCA ACABC CACBA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
