I quit Facebook in August 2020 completely. Before that, I was constantly checking my
notifications and news feed, while waiting in line at the grocery store, pumping gas, at the
doctor's office. Wherever waiting was involved, I'd be on Facebook or Instagram. I'd panic
if I didn't have a signal.
I slowly started to see how much oversharing my Facebook friends were doing.I
began to ask mvself if I even really knew all these friends, if they would come to mv aid if
I were facing an emergency, if any of them would miss my absence on Facebook, and the
answer was no. So, I downloaded my Facebook data and deactivated my account. I deleted
Instagram.Twitter, and Snapchat, too. I suppose that makes me social media-free.
Honestly,it was not easy. Facebook was some place where I used to write my heart
out and could feel safe about anything I'd like to express. It was a place where I had some
of my beautiful memories, where I met some new and amazing people and where I shared
some of the joyful moments of my life. Having said this, I never felt at ease on Facebook.
I felt like I was living someone else's life, and it felt like all the time I was trving to please
others and expecting others to make me happy by responding to my posts with likes and
great comments.
Now I spend quality time with my friends and family. I read print newspapers and
books. I started playing the piano again and learning a couple more instruments. I cook.
and I garden. I take up running and walking and feel healthier. Disconnecting from social
media made such a huge difference for me. I didn't see how addictive and time-consuming
Facebook and other social media were until I took mvself off it all

Maybe few people know the Northern Spain's distinctive language-Basque.
There's a funny folktale about the language that perfectly illustrates its unique
strangeness. God once attempted to learn the language in order to pick out the ill Basques.
But after seven years of fruitless studies, he had to give up.
Basque, also known as Euskara, has long puzzled historians and linguists(语言学家)
with its apparent lack of relation to any other living language in the world. They still can't
piece together a conclusive origin story for it. It is spoken by just over a million people.
almost all of whom live in the Basque region of Northern Spain and Southern France.
Basque pre-dates the Indo-European languages, and at the height of its influence. it
was spoken throughout a region that was bordered by the Ebro River, the Garonne, the
western Pyrenees and Catalonia. Invasions( 入侵) from the Celts,Romans and more have
decreased its geographical reach over time. Additionally, Franco forbade the use of any
languages besides Spanish during his rule between 1939 and 1975, but Basque managed to
survive in remote rural mountain towns and along the coast of the Bay of Biscay, as well as
in daily domestic conversations in the cities.
Next came a wave of arrivals from the Indo-European people around 3, 5OO years
ago, which is when the seeds for most current European languages were scattered(撒播)
around the continent. However, this didn't seem to occur in the Basque region itself, which
was geographically isolated from the rest. It was in 1545 that the first book was printed in
Euskara, and the language was finally standardized in 1968. Today, many speakers of
Euskara live in rural or suburban areas, There's a standardized form of Euskara called
Batua that's used in schools and institutions, however. Euskara has also been the co-
official language of the Basque Country Autonomous Community since 1979, along with
Spanish.
28. What does the author intend to say about Basque by mentioning its story?
A. Its speakers are often old.
B. Few people understand it.
C.It is a puzzling language.
D. It is difficult to learn.
29. What can we learn about Basque from paragraph 4?
A. It was once banned in Spain.
B. It was spoken only in rural areas.
C. It integrated with several local languages.
D. It came from the Indo-European languages.
30. What do we know about Batua?
A. It was spoken before 1545.
B. It is the base of Spanish.
C. It is rooted to the Basque language.
D. It gradually disappeared in cities
31. What's the text mainly about?
A. One of the world's most lonely languages.
B. Basque's past,present and future.
C.The rise and fall of Basque.
D. Two official languages in one place.

Scientists have made great breakthroughs in building low-lithium(锲) batteries.
Lithium is the main component in rechargeable batteries, and demand for the metal
has skyrocketed in recent years. However, the mining process to obtain the element often
causes lasting water and land pollution. It means many companies are looking for
alternative materials from which to build batteries. The Pacific Northwest National
Laboratory(PNNL) cooperated with Microsoft to do just that. Using Microsoft's AI too
Azure Quantum Elements, researchers screened potential new materials that can be used
in low-lithium batteries.
Batteries work by bringing charged particles(粒子) back and forth between positive
and negative ends, known as electrodes. When wires are connected, lithium ions move from
the negative electrode, through a conducting substance called the electrolyte, toward the
positive electrode. Meanwhile, electrons travel in the same direction through the wires,
enabling energy to be drawn from the battery.
For this study. the researchers focused on solid electrolyte materials which scientists
hope to develop into a safer and more efficient alternative to current liquid electrolytes.
Microsoft's AI tool narrowed 32 million theoretical materials down to half a million
materials in a matter of hours. The team then selected nine other criteria and used AI to
apply them, sorting the candidates by their electronic properties, cost and strength to
narrow the pool to 18 finalists in just 80 hours."I was so shocked. It'd have taken 20 years
to screen through all those materials experimentally," said engineer Kandler Smith. The
researchers synthesized(合成) a final material that could reduce lithium usage in
batteries by 70%.
Conventional lithium-ion batteries use liquid electrolytes which shorten the charging
time, but they're flammable, which means they burn easily, and side reactions with the
electrodes degrade the battery over time. Solid-state electrolytes are more chemically stable
and much less flammable. The downfall is that they don't move the lithium ions as
quickly,so the charging time is slower. So the electronic performance of the top-performing
candidate the AI identified will need improving before it becomes suitable for practical
applications.
32. Why did PNNL cooperate with Microsoft?
A. To build a new type of battery.
B. To find more lithium for batteries.
C.To produce batteries more quickly.
D. To shorten lithium's mining process.
33. What made Smith impressed when AI was identifying the promising materials?
A. Its requirements.
B. Its efficiency.
C. Its methods.
D. Itscost.
国考1号2·8月卷·英语第6页(共10页)
34. What is solid-state electrolytes' disadvantage?
A. They are likely to burn more easily.
B. They need much more charging time.
C. They are much less stable while working
D. They have to be graded more frequently.
35. What lesson can we learn from this battery results?
A. Traditional industries still have their place.
B. AI can replace the jobs people do nowadays.
C. It's vital to integrate technology with science.
D. Human need promotes hi-tech development

Science shows that helping others can make you feel good too. The key is to find the
approach that works for you.
For thousands of years, the greatest thinkers have suggested the same thing. 36
Scientific research provides clear data to support the idea that helping others may be the
secret to living a life that is happier, healthier, and more productive and meaningful.
37 And as we learn early, it's better to give than to receive. Plus, the more you
give, the more you stand to gain purpose, meaning, and happiness. Follow these tips:
Find your passion. 38 You might care about one cause more than others, and
that's okay. Support the cause that feels right for you.
Give your time. The gift of time is often more valuable to the receiver, and more
satisfying to the giver, than the gift of money. 39 We can give some of this time to help
others-whether a few hours each day, or a few days each year.
Don't forget about yourself. "Selfless giving easily becomes significant,"psychologist
Adam Grant says. He advises giving to others, but keeping your personal and emotional
needs in mind. 40
Be pro-active. Set aside time to serve your community. Think about your options, and
find the cause and type of service that best match your values.
A. You matter too.
B. Giving can feel great.
C. That is that happiness is found in helping others
D. They think that happiness just depends on ourselves.
E. Both time and money are important to givers who help others.
F. We don't all have the same amount of money, but we all have time.
G. It's not how much you give, but it's how much love you put into giving

短文。
My grandmother and I were on the back p
porch(门廊)at my parents'home in
Louisiana where the extended family was gathered for Sunday dinner.
Suddenly, we heard cries from the back yard. We ran outside, looking nervously for
the source, and discovered a newly opened hole in the ground, about 28 inches across.
where grass growing across the top hid a spring-fed well. For years, my father had been
filling in the unused well with dirt. Down this awful hole we could see only the head of my
20-month-old nephew, David, about 15 feet down, head above the muck(淤泥),and water
in the well.
I ran to the back door of the house and shouted inside,"David's fallen in the well!'
My husband John and David's father Paul. both of whom are so fat, were right behind me
as I ran back to David. Looking around the yard for something to use to reach him, I saw
an old garden hose(软管) but dismissed it as I thought it was too weakto hold anvone's
weight. The mouth of the well was too narrow for fat adults to go down to save David who
was crying hard.
Fearing for David's safety, Paul and John were very anxious and walked up and down
in the yard. David's mother, Loretta, who was expecting her second baby any minute, was
in shock. I was so scared that I didn't know what to do next.
My grandmother and I must have been making a terrible noise because our next door
neighbor Ivy Gibson came running over. He immediately assessed the situation and took
command of the rescue.
Gibson,a 31-vear-old drag-line operator, who happened to be thin, told us calmly to
bring the hose, double it, and lower him into the small opening. He quickly removed his
shoes while we readied the hose, Then Paul. John, and I lowered him into the well
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The well was too narrow for Gibson to bend over.
Finally,Gibson and David reached the surface
