Lucille Clifton was born in Depew, New York in 1936. She began writing poetry when she was 97 about ten years old. She had developed an interest in poetry because of her mother, Thelma Sayles. Her mother was also a poet although her poems were never published. As a child, Lucille would sit on her mother􀆳s lap and listen as she read poetry. She learned to love words and the power of words. That stayed with her as she grew. While her mother taught her to love poetry, her father gave her the gift of storytelling. He would tell Lucille interesting stories about her ancestors, especially the one named Lucille who was his grandmother. Samuel Clifton said she was the first black woman to be legally hanged in the state of Virginia. Lucille Clifton wrote about it in her poem called Lucy. Lucille often talked about her love for words. She loved the sound of words and the way the words felt in her mouth. She loved finding interesting ways to use words to express what was happening in the world. Unlike her mother, Lucille Clifton􀆳s poetry is anything but traditional. Her poems do not rhyme or follow a special kind of pattern. They do not use fancy words. Her poetry is known for being simple, truthful and direct. It is written the way people speak, in a casual (随意的) and relaxed language. There is very little punctuation and even less capitalisation. Many of the poems are uncomfortably honest. Lucille Clifton often said that she tried to comfort the afflicted (折磨) and afflict the comfortable. Over the years, she seems to have perfected that art. 1. What can be learned from the passage? A. Lucille􀆳s father often read poems to her. B Regarded as one of the English language􀆳s most gifted poets, John Keats wrote poetry that focused on imagery, human nature, and philosophy. Although Keats didn􀆳t receive much formal literary education, his own studies and passion brought him much success. Besides, his own life situation influenced his poetry greatly. Growing up as a young boy in London in a lower middle⁃class family, the young John didn􀆳t attend a private school, but went to a public one. His teachers and his family􀆳s friends regarded him as an optimistic boy who favoured playing and fighting much more than minding his studies. After his father􀆳s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother􀆳s passing due to tuberculosis (肺结核), he began viewing life differently. He wanted to escape the world and did so by reading anything he could get his 08 hands on. At around the age of 16, the teenage John Keats began studying under a surgeon so that he too might become a doctor. However, his strong literary desire had taken too much of his fancy, especially with his addiction to the poetry of Ehmund Spenser. He was able to have his first full poem published in the Examiner in 1816, entitled O Solitude! If I Must With Thee Dwell. Within two months in 1817, Keats had written an entire volume of poetry, but was sharply criticised by a magazine. However, the negative response didn􀆳t stop his pursuit (追求) of rhythm. John Keats􀆳s next work was Endymion, which was published in May, 1818. The story involves a shepherd who falls in love with the moon goddess and leads him on an adventure of one boy􀆳s hope to overcome the limitations of being human. Following Endymion, however, he tried something more narrative⁃based and wrote Isabella. During this time, John Keats began seeing his limitations in poetry due to his own limit in life experiences. He would have to have the “knowledge” associated with his poems. His next work was Hyperion that would try to combine all that he learned. However, a bout (发 作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and finally take his life in 1821. 4. In our present time, anyone at school is required to learn and recite some of the classical Chinese poems. It has also enjoyed increasing popularity overseas, inspiring many western writers, composers and even hippies. Chinese poetry can be divided into three main periods: the early period, folk songs in simple, repetitive forms; the classical period from the Han Dynasty to the fall of the Qing Dynasty, in which a number of different forms were developed; and the modern period of western⁃like free verse. There are five major kinds of ancient poetry called Shi, Ci, Ge, Qu and Fu, which are mainly about common things like love, romance and nature that people appreciate. It is thought that the greatest ancient poets lived in the Tang, Song, and Han eras. The leading figures on Chinese poetry are Du Fu and Li Bai. However, it seems Chinese poems are not the primary source of knowledge and joy for people. Thanks to Chinese Poetry Conference, traditional Chinese poetry has been cast into the spotlight. The show brings together amateur contestants and expert scholars through a competition aiming to “appreciate classical Chinese poetry, explore cultural genes and enjoy the beauty of life” . Ⅲ. What is art? When people think about this question, they will naturally think about all kinds of musical instruments or the great paintings in the art museums. Art seems to be far away from the ordinary people, but I don’t think so. Art is everywhere. For example, the delicious food that is made by our parents is the great art, and the value of the food is to bring people the great joy when they have a taste of it. The scenery around us is the visible art. When we appreciate it, our mood become eased. Art is something that brings people the positive value, so art is around everybody. If we take time to slow down our pace, then we can enjoy art from life and feel the comfortable lifestyle. 601
