How to Write a Poem
Writing a poem is about observing the world within or around you. A poem can be about anything,
from love to loss. Writing poetry can seem difficult, especially if you do not feel you are naturally
creative. With the right inspiration and approach, you can write a poem that you will be proud to share
with others in class or with your friends.
Find a topic for your poem
Think of every memory, situation, and moment as a possible topic and youll start seeing poetry all
around you! Head to your favourite park or spot in the city, or just take a walk through your
neighbourhood. Use the people you see and the nature and buildings you pass as inspiration for a poem.
1)
You can start your poem by focusing on a specific theme or idea that you find fascinating or
interesting. Picking a specific theme or idea in the poem can give your poem a clear objective. This can
make it easier for you to narrow down the images and descriptions you are going to use in your poem.
2)
Avoid abstract imagery and go for concrete descriptions of people, places, and things in your
poem. You should always try to describe something using the five senses: smell, taste, touch, sight,
and sound. Using concrete imagery will make your readers involved in the world of your poem and make
images come alive for them.
Revise your poem
After your first draft, you can share your poem with other poets to get feedback from them and
improve your poem. You may join a poetry writing group, where you share your poems with other poets
and work on your poems together. Then take the feedback you receive and revise.
1. Skim the passage and fill in the blanks.
1) 2)
37
2. Match the words in bold with the definitions.

2) objective B. sth. that you plan to do or achieve
3) abstract C. clear, certain or real, and existing in a form that can be seen or felt
4) concrete D. sb. or sth. that gives you ideas for doing sth.
5) feedback E. information or statements of opinion about sth. that can tell you if it is
successful or liked
3. Translate the following sentences into Chinese with the help of a dictionary.
1) With the right inspiration and approach, you can write a poem that you will be proud to share
with others in class or with your friends.

Lucille Clifton was the first African⁃American poet winner of Maryland. Critics (评论家) call her
one of the greatest writers of our time.
Lucille Clifton was born in Depew, New York in 1936. She began writing poetry when she was
97
about ten years old. She had developed an interest in poetry because of her mother, Thelma Sayles. Her
mother was also a poet although her poems were never published. As a child, Lucille would sit on her
mothers lap and listen as she read poetry. She learned to love words and the power of words. That
stayed with her as she grew.
While her mother taught her to love poetry, her father gave her the gift of storytelling. He would
tell Lucille interesting stories about her ancestors, especially the one named Lucille who was his
grandmother. Samuel Clifton said she was the first black woman to be legally hanged in the state of
Virginia. Lucille Clifton wrote about it in her poem called Lucy.
Lucille often talked about her love for words. She loved the sound of words and the way the words
felt in her mouth. She loved finding interesting ways to use words to express what was happening in the
world.
Unlike her mother, Lucille Cliftons poetry is anything but traditional. Her poems do not rhyme or
follow a special kind of pattern. They do not use fancy words. Her poetry is known for being simple,
truthful and direct. It is written the way people speak, in a casual (随意的) and relaxed language.
There is very little punctuation and even less capitalisation. Many of the poems are uncomfortably
honest. Lucille Clifton often said that she tried to comfort the afflicted (折磨) and afflict the
comfortable. Over the years, she seems to have perfected that art.
1. What can be learned from the passage?
A. Lucilles father often read poems to her. B. Lucilles parents had deep influence on her.
C. Lucilles mother published some poems. D. Lucilles parents taught her to love words.
2. Which of the following best describes Lucille Cliftons poetry?
A. Traditional. B. Rhythmic. C. Complicated. D. Realistic.
3. Why did Lucille Clifton write poems in an uncomfortably honest way?
A. She wanted to be supported by the poor people.
B. She followed her mothers writing pattern.
C. She wanted to make unhappy people feel better.
D. She thought it was the perfect art form.

Regarded as one of the English languages most gifted poets, John Keats wrote poetry that focused
on imagery, human nature, and philosophy. Although Keats didnt receive much formal literary
education, his own studies and passion brought him much success. Besides, his own life situation
influenced his poetry greatly.
Growing up as a young boy in London in a lower middle⁃class family, the young John didnt attend
a private school, but went to a public one. His teachers and his familys friends regarded him as an
optimistic boy who favoured playing and fighting much more than minding his studies. After his fathers
death in the early 1800s, followed by his mothers passing due to tuberculosis (肺结核), he began
viewing life differently. He wanted to escape the world and did so by reading anything he could get his
08
hands on.
At around the age of 16, the teenage John Keats began studying under a surgeon so that he too
might become a doctor. However, his strong literary desire had taken too much of his fancy, especially
with his addiction to the poetry of Ehmund Spenser. He was able to have his first full poem published in
the Examiner in 1816, entitled O Solitude! If I Must With Thee Dwell. Within two months in 1817,
Keats had written an entire volume of poetry, but was sharply criticised by a magazine. However, the
negative response didnt stop his pursuit (追求) of rhythm.
John Keatss next work was Endymion, which was published in May, 1818. The story involves a
shepherd who falls in love with the moon goddess and leads him on an adventure of one boys hope to
overcome the limitations of being human. Following Endymion, however, he tried something more
narrative⁃based and wrote Isabella. During this time, John Keats began seeing his limitations in poetry
due to his own limit in life experiences. He would have to have the “knowledge” associated with his
poems. His next work was Hyperion that would try to combine all that he learned. However, a bout (发
作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and finally take his life in 1821.

Yet you cant see my love

Script:
关关雎鸠,在河之洲。 It is not only a folk song but the most widely read ancient Chinese poem about
romance. Poetry has been a favourite literary form for thousands of years through Chinese history. It is of great
significance at home and abroad. People in China have been attaching great importance to poetry. In the Tang
Dynasty (618—907 A.D.), poetry was the fundamental subject in the civil examination. In our present time,
anyone at school is required to learn and recite some of the classical Chinese poems. It has also enjoyed
increasing popularity overseas, inspiring many western writers, composers and even hippies.
Chinese poetry can be divided into three main periods: the early period, folk songs in simple, repetitive
forms; the classical period from the Han Dynasty to the fall of the Qing Dynasty, in which a number of
different forms were developed; and the modern period of western⁃like free verse.
There are five major kinds of ancient poetry called Shi, Ci, Ge, Qu and Fu, which are mainly about
common things like love, romance and nature that people appreciate. It is thought that the greatest ancient
poets lived in the Tang, Song, and Han eras. The leading figures on Chinese poetry are Du Fu and Li Bai.
However, it seems Chinese poems are not the primary source of knowledge and joy for people. Thanks to Chinese
Poetry Conference, traditional Chinese poetry has been cast into the spotlight. The show brings together amateur
contestants and expert scholars through a competition aiming to “appreciate classical Chinese poetry, explore
cultural genes and enjoy the beauty of life” .

What is art? When people think about this question, they will naturally think about all kinds of musical
instruments or the great paintings in the art museums. Art seems to be far away from the ordinary people, but
I don’t think so. Art is everywhere. For example, the delicious food that is made by our parents is the great
art, and the value of the food is to bring people the great joy when they have a taste of it. The scenery around
us is the visible art. When we appreciate it, our mood become eased. Art is something that brings people the
positive value, so art is around everybody. If we take time to slow down our pace, then we can enjoy art from
life and feel the comfortable lifestyle.
