I grew up in Hastings, a small coastal town in East Sussex, famous for 1066 years of history and seaside charm. I have a memory as a boy, saving my pocket money by placing it in a special drawer, the golden pound coins collecting into a neat pile. When I was 14 in 2007, I saved up money for a gap year, by working at a bingo hall, and I put the money into a savings account. I remember getting £70 ($91) interest rates one year, which made me feel very rich indeed.
Skip forward to 2018 and I was living and working in Beijing, China, as a journalist. All around me Beijing residents were paying for everything using just their smart phones. They would walk up to a counter of a restaurant, shop, or convenience store, and offer up a QR code(二维码)for the cashier to scan. Once scanned, the online system would immediately deduct(扣除) the exact amount owed from the payer’s e-wallet. No reaching for cash and waiting for change. The transaction would take seconds.
But I was a stubborn holdout. My friends, both Western and Chinese, would make fun of me for being so traditional – for sticking to ―dirty cash. But there were a couple of reasons why I kept using physical money and avoided getting into e-payments and e-wallets. Firstly, it felt safer. I wasn’t really aware of how electronic money would work on my smart phone and I feared it would somehow get easily taken away. Secondly, I feared that by moving to e-payments, I would end up spending more. I would lose all sense of how much, day by day, I would be spending.
Were these fears justified? As more and more people across the world escape cash, these are essential issues for me to consider.
24. Which of the following made the writer feel very rich?
A. Saving £70 ($91) by placing it in a special drawer.
B. Collecting £70 ($91) coins into a neat pile.
C. Putting £70 ($91) into a savings account in bank.
D. Getting £70 ($91) interest rates from a bank.
25. Which’s not the advantage of e-payments?
A. No reaching for cash. B. No waiting for change.
C. Taking only few seconds. D. Spending more money.
26. Why didn’t the writer like to accept the e- payments at first?
A. Because he was too traditional to save money.
B. Because he liked the sense of paying in cash.
C. Because he thought e-payments would deduct more.
D. Because he knew how e-payments work on smartphones.
27. What can we infer about the writer from the last paragraph?
A. He accepted the idea that money is abstract.
B. He eventually turned to using e-payments.
C. He thought the pain of e-payment is delayed.
D. He insisted that having physical cash is safer.

One North Carolina business owner is helping the homeless by opening up his parking lot to people who may be living out of their cars.
James Charles is the owner of Kiplin’s Automotive Group in Charlotte, North Carolina. For about two months, he has been encouraging people sleeping in their cars to use the company’s parking lot as a safe place to sleep at night.
Charles was first encouraged to do something helpful after his team tried to take back a woman’s car back in January.
“The gentleman who was taking back the car said, ‘We can’t take the car; there’s somebody living in the car,’” Charles told WBTV.
Then he tried to get the woman into a homeless shelter (收容所). But he was shocked to find that every shelter in the city was full. Although he paid for her to stay in a hotel for a few nights, he knew that there were other people suffering from the same thing.
Charles made a Facebook post: “We would like to provide a safe place for those going through this tough time. We can’t put everyone in a hotel, but we can get you a safe place for the night.
Since more and more people have shared his post, people have donated (捐赠) hats, scarves, food, and even an easy-to-move toilet for the parking lot. Not only that, but about 20 different people have helped Charles with his offer by parking their cars overnight at the lot.
These kind acts also made it possible for Charles to start his non-profit (非盈利的) organization, HALO Now. The organization was set up to raise money for the homeless people of Charlotte — and he has raised more than US$30,000.
28. From the passage, we know Kiplin’s Automotive Group __________.
A. may be a company that rents cars to people
B. is a company that rents a parking place
C. is a non-profit organization in North Carolina
D. may be an organization that offers homeless shelters
29. Why did Charles provide the parking lot as a safe place for people to sleep?
A. Because his parking lot was rented as a living place.
B. Because Charles wanted to show his kindness.
C. Because people had no place to park their cars.
D. Because many people had no place to go during a tough time.
30. What did Charles do to help the homeless?
A. He asked people to donate online.
B. He shared the story through the Internet.
C. He gave out food to people living in their cars.
D. He built an easy-to-move toilet for the parking lot.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Parking lots can be safe places for people to live in the future.
B. Homeless people seek help through the Internet.
C. A company owner provides a safe place for the homeless to park and sleep.
D. The government uses parking lots to help the homeless settle down.

Imagine putting on a virtual reality headset and “walking” through a long-gone neighborhood in your city — seeing the streets and buildings as they appeared decades ago.
That’s a very real possibility now that researchers have developed a method to create 3D digital models of historic neighborhoods using machine learning and historic Sanborn Fire Insurance maps.
But the digital models will be more than just a novelty — they will give researchers a resource to conduct studies that would have been nearly impossible before, such as estimating the economic loss caused by the demolition (拆除) of historic neighborhoods.
This research begins with the Sanborn maps, which were created to allow fire insurance companies to assess their responsibility in about 12,000 cities and towns in the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries. In larger cities, they were often updated regularly, said Miller, who is director of Ohio State’s Center for Urban and Regional Analysis (CURA).
The problem for researchers was that trying to manually collect usable data from these maps was time-consuming — at least until the maps were digitized. Digital versions are now available from the Library of Congress.
Study co-author Yue Lin, a doctoral student in geography, developed machine learning tools that can extract (提取) details about individual buildings from the maps, including their locations and footprints, the number of floors, their construction materials and their primary use, such as residence or business.
The researchers tested their machine learning techniques on two neighborhoods. Comparing data from the Sanford maps to today showed that a total of 380 buildings were knocked down in the two neighborhoods for the highway, including 286 houses, 86 garages, five apartments and three stores.
Analysis of the results showed that the machine learning model was very accurate in recreating the information contained in the maps — about 90% accurate for building footprints and construction materials.
Using the machine learning techniques developed for this study, researchers could develop similar 3D models for nearly any of the 12,000 cities and towns that have Sanborn maps. This will allow researchers to re-create neighborhoods lost to natural disasters like floods, as well as urban renewal, depopulation and other types of change.
32. What were the Sanborn maps originally produced to do?
A. To mark fire spots. B. To design new neighborhoods.
C. To reconstruct historic buildings. D. To estimate insurance responsibility.
33. What challenge did researchers once meet in the study?
A. The lack of financial aid. B. Updating related information.
C. Getting paper maps digitized. D. The long process of data collection.
34. Why does the author use some figures in paragraph 7?
A. To point out the great loss in the illegal demolition.
B. To list the changes between the past and the present.
C. To prove the accuracy of the machine learning model.
D. To show the wide application of 3D digital models.
35. What does the underlined word “This” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. The creation of similar 3D models.
B. The development of cities and towns.
C. The neighborhood lost to natural disasters.
D. The need for the machine learning techniques.

I started my dormitory life this year and met my roommate Kate. In the process of getting along, we found that we both enjoy reading and watching science fictions. With similar hobbies, our relationship immediately became closer. We went to class and canteen together every day in pairs.
Although we considered each other as the best friend, there were frictions in our life style. I was never very neat, while Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled everything. I always looked for everything.
Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other and never stopped trying to change the other person’s life style. Our friendship went ups and downs like a boat on the sea. Dissatisfaction with the other was accumulating.
War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I was rather irritated (激怒). How could she act like that? I could not control my temper either. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder. Neither of us was willing to calm down to be a good listener.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her dear grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled under her covers, burying her face. From where I stood, I saw her back slightly up and down. Obviously, she was sobbing. That was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.
Slowly I began to move.

第一节 作文(满分 15分)
【66题答案】
【答案】Dear Cathy,
I’ve already returned from Canada. Thank you for the warm help during my stay in Canada.
Last month, I participated in the Cultural Exchange Day. I enjoyed myself in your country. We visited the city museum and some places of interest, which made me have a better understanding of the Canadian society, culture and history. Besides, I also made many new friends. What’s more, I was lucky enough to stay at your home. And I will never forget the days we spent together.
Here I especially thank you for the English novel you offered me as a gift. It’s a great help for me to learn English well. I will treasure and make full use of it. Welcome to China when it’s convenient for you!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】 Slowly I began to move. Approaching Kate’s bed, I sat beside her, put my hand on her back and stroked her gently. “Don’t worry! Trust me! Everything will be fine.” On hearing my words, Kate stopped sobbing, her face still buried. So I continued, “I’m really sorry for being such a messy person and I’m sure there is something I can do right now.” With the words finished, I rose up, turned around, collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn’t notice Kate had sat up.
She was watching in disbelief, her tears dried. Kate dashed towards me all of a sudden and gave me a tight hug, murmuring shyly, “I need to apologize too. I shouldn’t have yelled at you first. Are we still best friends?” I nodded. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She said “Thanks”, and we both burst out laughing happily at the same time. Two months later, there came the good news that Kate’s grandma had recovered. Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.
