My husband Wade and I run Southern Koala Rescue and are committed to saving as many koalas as we can. One day, we were called out to rescue a koala that was stuck in a burning tree; but when the flames died down, we decided to return, thinking there could be other koalas that needed our help.
Wade and I were walking through the blackened bushland with our team of volunteers when I spotted a koala on a burnt tree with a swollen and infected wound the size of a 20-cent piece on its neck. Using rings on the end of poles, we coaxed(哄诱)the koala down and put it in a carrier before having it examined. The wound needed a minor operation and, afterwards, the koala, who we named Claire, had to stay indoors to keep flies off the injury. Claire was frightened of me at first, but after four weeks I gained her trust.
Finally, it was time for Claire to get ready to go outside and build up enough muscle movement to be released back into the wild. This was the most satisfying part of my job because not all koalas can be saved. I did miss them when they were gone, but I knew they were not meant to be pets.
After the Black Summer fires destroyed so much of the country from 2019 to 2020, extinction for koalas is a very real possibility. For individuals, one of the easiest ways you can help koalas is leaving a dish of water in your backyard. It can save a life and that counts.
24. Why were the volunteer team called out?
A. To put out a big fire. B. To save a trapped koala.
C. To search for missing animals. D. To clear the blackened bushland.
25. What can we learn about Claire?
A. It was afraid of flies. B. It got hurt by hunters.
C. It needed a major operation. D. It developed trust in humans.
26. Which part of the job does the author find the most meaningful?
A. Sending rescued animals back to nature. B. Providing a shelter for wild animal.
C. Curing the injured animals. D. Petting many wild animals.
27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Humans are responsible for the big fire. B. Nothing can stop wildlife dying out.
C. Small acts can make a big difference. D. Animals are human’s best friends.

One inconvenient truth for the clean energy industry is the undeniable fact that wind turbines (涡轮机) kill birds. Researchers say smarter turbines could dramatically cut the toll.
The American Bird Conservancy claims that at least one million bird deaths as a result of wind turbines a year in the US alone is likely to be an underestimate. That’s substantially less than the estimated 980 million birds a year that die crashing into buildings, or the 1.4 to 3.7 billion per year killed by domestic cats. But it’s still an unacceptable number, and a problem that needs to be addressed— because a fully green energy network will need more and more turbines over the coming decades.
Researchers at SINTEF and the Norwegian Centre believe they have an idea that could help in a lot of cases. The idea — known as SKARV— is fairly simple: each turbine will have cameras fitted, capable of spotting birds flying directly into the path of the rotors (螺旋桨). Software will automatically calculate their predicted path, and if it looks like they’re in danger of being hit, the system will send control signals to slow the rotors down.
In simulations (模拟), the system is able to avoid the vast majority of crashes. This, of course, doesn’t describe all situations. For example, if a young, inexperienced bird approaches a turbine displaying irregular flight behavior, it will not be possible to predict exactly where it will be a few seconds later. Prediction is also more difficult if several birds approach at the same time.
Some researchers argue that birds are learning to avoid turbines voluntarily. But if more than a million birds a year haven’t got the memo yet, it’s still a problem worth solving. We look forward to hearing how trials progress.
28. What does the underlined phrase “cut the toll” in paragraph I probably mean?
A. Maximize efficiency. B. Reduce deaths.
C. Lower costs. D. Prevent errors.
29. What can be inferred about bird death caused by wind turbines in paragraph 2?
A. It tops the list of bird deaths. B. It calls for immediate action.
C. It has been properly solved. D. It shows progress in technology.
30. How does SKARV make wind turbines intelligent?
A. By keeping a constant speed. B. By recording birds’ behavior.
C. By predicting potential danger. D. By sending warnings to birds.
31. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Challenges presented in simulations. B. Features of birds’ flying patterns.
C. Examples of SKARV’s application D. Approaches to crash avoidance.

According to a recent study,a new genetically modified(转基因的)rice can prevent infections of HIV,the virus responsible for the disease AIDS.
The study reports the newly-developed rice produces proteins(蛋白质)that attach directly to the HIV virus. This process keeps the virus from mixing with human cells. The scientists say it can remove the effect of the virus and block its spreading.
The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS reports that worldwide, nearly 37 million people were living with HIV in 2017. The organization says the largest number of those are in ·developing countries. Nearly two-thirds of HIV cases are in Africa. Now there is no cure for HIV/AIDS though there have been developments in oral drug treatments to slow the progression of the disease.
The new study predicts the rice-based method will lead to long-term use of the anti-HIV treatment across the developing world. Researchers said the "groundbreaking" discovery is “realistically the only way" that anti-HIV combination treatments can be produced at a cost low enough for the developing world.
They say the easiest and most cost-effective way to use the rice will be to make it into a cream to be put on the skin. The HIV-fighting proteins can then enter the body through the skin. People all over the world could grow the rice and make the cream themselves. This would prevent the cost and travel required for many patients to receive treatments and medicine.
The process of changing the genetic structure of food crops has been debated for some time. Critics of genetically engineered crops believe they can harm people. The scientific team says further testing is needed to ensure that the genetic engineering process does not produce any additional chemicals that could be dangerous to people.
32. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The terrible situations of HIV infections.
B. The rapid development of Africa.
C. The practical ways to cure AIDS.
D. The efforts made by the United Nations.
33. In which way will the rice be used at the lowest cost?
A. By transforming it into proteins.
B. By processing it into a cream.
C. By attaching it to the HIV virus.
D. By adding it to an oral drug.
34. What can we infer about the genetic engineering process?
A. It can prevent infections of HIV.
B. It has produced dangerous chemicals.
C. It is intended for the developed world.
D. It requires further testing to ensure the safety.
35. From which is the text probably taken?
A. A biology textbook.
B. A first aid brochure.
C. A social web page.
D. A health magazine.

____38____ Before downloading an app that claims to make your life better, do a quick Google search and read up on the science behind it. Sometimes app designers start with the best intentions, but then get too invested in the engineering and details and lose sight of the science that they are basing themselves on.
Finally, make sure you try out the app before you use it. ____39____ Read the fine print and inform yourself regarding return policies and trial periods when you download a new app. Don’t use an app that isn’t right for you.
Digital Technology may help, but you still need to go outside to take a walk, and do something to make someone else happy. ____40____ Use the tools that are helpful to you, digital or otherwise, and find your way.

The Ace
Billie Jean was always full of energy and played as well as she could. One teacher suggested she should be more ‘ladylike’ and try not to win all the time, but her parents didn’t agree.
“Play as well as you can and be the best you can be!” they told her.
One morning, Billie Jean’s friend Susan tapped her on the shoulder during class.
“Do you want to play tennis?”
“What’s tennis?” Billie Jean whispered back.
It’s a fun game. You’ll love it — you get to run and jump and hit a ball with a racket (球拍)!
Billie Jean didn’t know what a ‘racket’ was, but tennis sounded exciting!
The next weekend, Susan took Billie Jean to a famous club — the Country Club. Then Susan handed her a strange thing looking like a net. “This is a racket. You hit a ball with it!”
Susan threw a yellow ball at her. Billie Jean frowned and waved her racket as hard as she could. She spent more time hitting the air than she did hitting the ball, but she loved playing tennis anyway! It seemed that she found out what she was going to do with her life — she wanted to be an ace (最佳选手) of tennis in the world! When going home that night, sunburned and exhausted, she had only one question in her mind.
“Mom and Dad, can I please have a tennis racket of my own?” Billie Jean asked. Her parents looked at each other.“Money is a bit short,” her mother said. “But you can save up for one!”

【答案】24. B 25. D 26. A 27. C

C Examples of SKARV’s application D. Approaches to crash avoidance.
【答案】28. B 29. B 30. C 31. A

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了研究人员表示,更智能的涡轮机可以大大减少鸟类的死亡数量。介绍了这种智能涡轮机的工作原理以及存在的挑战。
【28题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段“One inconvenient truth for the clean energy industry is the undeniable fact that wind turbines kill birds. Researchers say smarter turbines could dramatically cut the toll.(对于清洁能源行业来说,一个难以忽视的、不可否认的事实是风力涡轮机会杀死鸟类。研究人员表示,更智能的涡轮机可以大大cut the toll。)”以及第三段“Software will automatically calculate their predicted path, and if it looks like they’re in danger of being hit, the system will send control signals to slow the rotors down.(软件会自动计算出它们的预测路径,如果它们(鸟类)看起来有被击中的危险,系统就会发出控制信号,让旋翼减速。)”可知,这里讲述了智能涡轮机减少鸟类撞击的工作原理,所以更智能的涡轮机可以大大减少鸟类的死亡。故划线词意思是“减少死亡”。故选B。
【29题详解】
推理判断题,根据第二段“But it’s still an unacceptable number, and a problem that needs to be addressed-because a fully green energy network will need more and more turbines over the coming decades,.(但这仍然是一个不可接受的数字,也是一个需要解决的问题——因为在未来几十年里,一个完全绿色的能源网络将需要越来越多的涡轮机。)”可知,风力涡轮机造成的鸟类死亡需要立即采取行动。故选B。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Software will automatically calculate their predicted path, and if it looks like they’re in danger of being hit, the system will send control signals to slow the rotors down.(软件会自动计算出它们的预测路径,如果它们看起来有被击中的危险,系统就会发出控制信号,让旋翼减速。)”可知,SKARV通过预测潜在危险使风力涡轮机智能化。故选C。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“In simulations, the system is able to avoid the vast majority of crashes. This, of course, doesn’t describe all situations. For example, if a young, inexperienced bird approaches a turbine displaying irregular flight behavior, it will not be possible to predict exactly where it will be a few seconds later. Prediction is also more difficult if several birds approach at the same time.(在模拟中,该系统能够避免绝大多数撞击。当然,这并不能描述所有的情况。例如,如果一只年轻的、没有经验的鸟接近一个表现出不规则飞行行为的涡轮机,就不可能准确预测几秒钟后它会在哪里。如果几只鸟同时接近,预测也会更加困难。)”可知,第四段的主要内容是模拟中存在的挑战。故选A。
D
D The efforts made by the United Nations.
【答案】32. A 33. B 34. D 35. D

Digital Technology is the major engine of modern life. It provides us with our means of communication, entertainment, and social lives. The last few years especially have shown how important digital technology is to our lives, as the pandemic forced us to move online. Everywhere, there are many apps that claim to help people find happiness: heart-rate trackers, exercise apps, sleep apps, etc. ____36____
Actually, there are three things you can do to ensure that your digital technology tools are helpful. Firstly, be certain that the app is designed in such a way that it serves your purposes and not the company’s purpose. Some apps will overwhelm you with notifications (通知) and data. ____37____ After all, you never want to feel bad about an app which always tells you what you should or should not do.
____38____ Before downloading an app that claims to make your life better do a quick Google search and read up on the science behind it.
A. Not every app is right for every person.
B. You may find these notifications useful.
C. How can we know which ones are truly helpful?
D. That could be more harmful to your mental health than helpful.
E. Remember, the pursuit of happiness doesn’t have only one path.
F. In addition, make sure that the science behind the app is good science.
G. Can we rely on digital technology around us to become happier people?

With her beloved racket, Billie Jean decided to practise hard to realize her tennis dream.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 “What can I do to make some money?” Billie Jean thought to herself. From that day on, Billie Jean asked her neighbors about any jobs she could do. “Can I sweep your driveway? Or weed your garden?” She put all the money she earned in a jar, and it slowly filled up. Finally, the big day came: with enough money, Billie Jean brought a little wooden racket with a purple grip — it was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen.
With her beloved racket, Billie Jean decided to practise hard to realize her tennis dream. She practised hard after school every day. Joining the Country Club and getting professional coach contributed to her great progress. Gradually, she mastered basic rules of the game. The more Billie Jean learned, the more fun she had! She always took her parents’ words to heart and always played as well as she could. Billie Jean made it! She entered tennis tournaments and became an ACE of the game — one of the most famous sports legends ever!
