A. fairy tales B. science-fiction thrillers C. romance fictions D. funny stories B I was invited to give a speech at an educator conference. I happened to sit next to Clay Parker, the CEO of a technology company that makes micro electronics devices. For the last few years, I’d been reading about the rapidly changing world of work and was increasingly concerned that students are not prepared for today’s workplace. Buried in book knowledge, university students talk like a book and always pass exams with flying colours. However, when facing HR staff instead of their teachers, what they have learned seems useless. So I asked Parker what qualities he most wanted in a potential new employee. I expected a list of technical skills - especially since Parker is an engineer himself- but I was way off the mark. “First, I look for someone who asks good questions,” Parker responded. “Our business is changing, and so are the skills of our engineers. We can teach them the technical stuff. But for employees willing to solve problems or to learn new things, they have to know what questions to ask. And we can’t teach them how to ask good questions 高 2022 级英语备课组 第 5 页 共 12 页 - how to think. The ability to ask the right questions reflects good thinking ability, the most important quality.” Indeed, the ability to ask good questions has been a repeated theme in almost all of my conversations about core competences and skills for success in today’s workplace. It turns out that asking good questions goes hand in hand with problem solving ability in the minds of most employers. The students have always been brought up to live up to a certain standard and so much emphasis has been put on fixed rules and giving the expected answer of their teachers instead of raising a question. We teachers are always blaming the students for giving wrong answers. Perhaps we should ask ourselves whether we are always asking the right questions. 24. Why did the author ask Parker the question? A. To bring the CEO’s attention to education. B. To collect information about his company. C. To ask for his opinion about the conference. D. To know his requirements for new employees. 25. What does the underlined expression "off the mark" in paragraph 2 mean? A. Mistaken. B. Not qualified. C. Confused. D. Not professional. 26. What does Parker value his employees for? A. Teamwork. B. Thinking ability. C. Technical skills. D. Professional knowledge. 27 Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. How to Hunt for a Job. B. Asking Questions Matters. C. An Encounter with a CEO. D. Problem-solving Makes a Difference. C Your colleague’s sharp comment keeps replaying in your mind. Two of your students are trapped in a “he said/she said” battle. When you reflect on your emotional reactions, you sometimes get caught up in cycles of negative feelings, which can make you feel even worse. If so, the answer may lie in a skill called “self-distancing”,the ability to take a step back and view yourself more objectively. According to research, when people adopt self-distancing while discussing a difficult event, they make better 高 2022 级英语备课组 第 6 页 共 12 页 sense of their reactions, experience less emotional suffering, and display fewer signs of stress. But what might self-distancing look like in action? Consider a typical “he said/she said” student conflict where they are each focusing on their own feelings. One is thinking,“I can’t believe he did that to me.” And another insists, “She really hurt my feelings.” However, if you ask them to take the self-distancing, they might step outside of themselves and ask broader questions: “Why was he so hurt in this situation?” or “How did her anger affect him?” Although this approach may sound too simple to be effective, studies indicate that a change in point of view can have a powerful effect on the way people think, feel, and behave. Here are several different techniques you can try. First, consider how a thoughtful friend might respond after quietly observing their situation. Besides, avoid using the pronoun “I”. Focus on using third-person pronouns, he, she, they, and they were able to see the stressful event as challenging rather than threatening. Finally, ask yourself, “How would I feel about this one week from now or ten years from now?” This form of mental time travel may be effective because our attention is directed away from our immediate, concrete circumstances. 28. What is self-distancing? A. Getting stuck in negative emotions. B. A stressful situation. C. A study on relieving emotional stress. D. Reflecting on yourself objectively. 29. How does the writer develop paragraph 2? A. by giving an example. B. by making a definition. C. by making a classification. D. by following a process. 30. Which of the following statement uses the techniques of self-distancing? A. I’m angry with him. B. How I wish I could go back to the past! C. How did these two people get to this point? D. He grabbed my notes, and then, and then... 31. What is the passage mainly about? A. The importance of self-distancing. B. Experiencing emotional sufferings. C. Breaking the Cycle of Negative Reflection. D. Ways to Reflect on Emotional Reactions. D 高 2022 级英语备课组 第 7 页 共 12 页 During an interview for one of my books, my interviewer said something I still think about often. Annoyed by the level of distraction(干扰) in his open office, he said, “That’s why I have a membership at the coworking space across the street—so I can focus.”His comment struck me as strange. After all, coworking spaces also typically use an open office layout(布局). But I recently came across a study that shows why his approach works. The researchers examined various levels of noise on participants as they completed tests of creative thinking. They were randomly divided into four groups and exposed to various noise levels in the background, from total silence to 50 decibels(分 贝), 70 decibels, and 85 decibels. The differences between most of the groups were statistically insignificant; however, the participants in the 70 decibels group—those exposed to a level of noise similar to background chatter in a coffee shop—significantly outperformed the other groups. Since the effects were small, this may suggest that our creative thinking does not differ that much in response to total silence and 85 decibels of background noise. But since the results at 70 decibels were significant, the study also suggests that the right level of background noise—not too loud and not total silence—may actually improve one’s creative thinking ability. The right level of background noise may interrupt our normal patterns of thinking just enough to allow our imaginations to wander, without making it impossible to focus. This kind of “distracted focus” appears to be the best state for working on creative tasks. So why do so many of us hate our open offices? The problem may be that, in our offices, we can’t stop ourselves from getting drawn into others’ conversations while we’re trying to focus. Indeed, the researchers found that face-to-face interactions and conversations affect the creative process, and yet a coworking space or a coffee shop provides a certain level of noise while also providing freedom from interruptions. 32. Why does the interviewer prefer a coworking space? A. It helps him concentrate. B. It blocks out background noise. C. It has a pleasant atmosphere. D. It encourages face-to-face interactions. 33. Which level of background noise may promote creative thinking ability? A. Total silence. B. 50 decibels. C. 70 decibels. D. 85 decibels. 34. What makes an open office unwelcome to many people? A. Personal privacy unprotected. B. Limited working space. C. Restrictions on group discussion. D. Constant interruptions. 35. What can we infer about the author from the text? 高 2022 级英语备课组 第 8 页 共 12 页 A. He’s a news reporter. B. He’s an office manager. C. He’s a professional designer. D. He’s a published writer. 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分;满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中 有两项为多余选项。 While almost everyone wants to learn how to be happier or at least less sad, happiness often isn’t in places we expect to find it. I had just learned English, and from what little I could gather from my friends. Santa Claus would come down one’s chimney and put toys in one’s stocking on Christmas Eve! What a great country, I thought. After I looked up “stocking” in my Chinese-English dictionary, I knew what I had to do and always expected that day. Finally, the big day came. On that wonderful night, after everyone went to bed, I sneaked out of bed, took my longest, cleanest knee sock and attached it to a nail already on the mantel (壁炉). Obviously, the previous owners of this house were no strangers to this Santa character. Gazing at the sock and imagining the delicately-packed gift in it, I couldn’t help giggling (咯咯笑). For the first time, I found it hard to fall asleep. And for the first time, I woke up before everyone else in the early morning. Then I headed straight to the fireplace and was even ready for what to say after seeing the gift. However, what happened next was the least thing I wanted to mention. On the nail was the empty and lonely sock. I was hit with the reality of the empty sock and the biggest lie ever told. I tried my best to hold back my tears but failed. Bursting into tears, I quickly took down the sock and stuffed it in the back of a drawer. Every December since then, the topic of Christmas memories would unavoidably come up, and I would amuse my friends with my poor-little-me story. I had to make it as funny as possible, or else I would cry once again. I didn’t know whether any of my 高 2022 级英语备课组 第 12 页 共 12 页 audience ever noticed the sparkling tears hidden in my eyes. How could I know that Santa was just late? Nine years ago, on Christmas Eve, I heard a knock on the door when I was watching TV. Unwillingly, I dragged my feet and opened the door. 注意:所续写短文的词数应为 150 左右; Outside the door stood an old man with a white beard and a red cap, holding a well- packed box. _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ Through tear-blurred eyes, I recognized the handwriting on the card. _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________
