By our very rough calculations, Reader’s Digest has published some 35,000 articles in nearly 1,200 issues. These small pages have held some very big names, including U.S. presidents, world leaders, sports legends, and, indeed, the biggest contributors of all, everyday Americans with a story to tell. These are some of our proudest moments.
How to Keep Young Mentally by Mary B. Mullett
This first article in the first issue highlighted inventor Alexander Graham Bell and his belief in lifelong learning: “The first essential of any real education is to observe. Observe! Remember! Compare!” It was an appropriate beginning reflecting our self-educated founder’s endless curiosity.
I’ve Come to Clean Your Shoes by Madge Harrah
The morning of a family funeral, an acquaintance shows up unannounced and says, “I’ve come to clean your shoes.” He spends the day quietly shining every pair in the house. The writer ends with: “Now, whenever I hear of an acquaintance who has lost a loved one, I try to think of one specific task suiting that person’s need. And if the person says, ‘How did you know I needed that done?’ I reply, ‘it’s because a man once cleaned my shoes.’”
Strange Encounter on Coho Creek by Morris Homer Erwin
A miner spends days camping in the Alaskan wilderness, working hard to earn the trust of a mother wolf stuck in a trap before she and her four pups starve to death. Eventually, he is able to free her. Four years later, he encounters a wolf in the same meadow. Yes, the same wolf. When we shared this classic on rd.com in 2019, it went viral and it has now been read by many millions online and in print.
How Honest Are We by Ralph Kinney Bennett
Our famous “wallet drop” set up the ultimate test of honesty: If we left wallets in cities around the country, how many would be returned? Well over half, it turned out—67 percent. The most honest city? Seattle, whose upstanding residents returned nine out of ten wallets.
21. What do we know about the acquaintance in the story I’ve Come to Clean Your Shoes?
A. He cleans shoes at the owner’s request.
B. He shows concern by cleaning shoes.
C. He comforts the owner by telling his own story.
D. He visits the house where the owner is severely sick.
22. Which article gained significant popularity online?
A. How to Keep Young Mentally. B. I’ve Come to Clean Your Shoes.
C. How Honest Are We. D. Strange Encounter on Coho Creek.
23. Where can the text be found?
A. In a magazine. B. In a history book. C. In a novel. D. In a brochure.
B
For Cruz, who grew up in Peru’s mountainous region of Cuzco, fog represents a massive opportunity. As a boy, he had to hike for more than an hour every day across rough hills to collect water from the nearest source. But over time, he realized that during the rainy season, drops of water would gather in the large leaves of banana trees. One day, he and his father built a canal system with the leaves to collect water. He moved to Lima at the age of 25.
Shocked by the water shortages and expensive water supply that some of the city’s poorest residents were suffering, Cruz set up EI Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua in 2005. The idea was to deploy the method he learned in his hometown on a larger, better-adapted scale, which would provide free, independently sourced and easily accessible water to those who needed it most. He began installing (安装) a traditional fog catcher model developed in the 1980s. The nonprofit provided the materials for free, and the community built the infrastructure (基础设施) themselves.
At the highest point of Los Tres Miradores, there is a curious set of large structures that is like a fleet of ships in the sky. They are so-called “fog catchers”. The 40 fog catchers there provide enough water for 180 families, whether to bathe, clean, drink (after being filtered at home) or to irrigate crops on small garden patches.
Supporters believe that fog catchers have the potential to improve water supply for communities around the world amid ever-challenging conditions. German researcher Lummerich says, “They are cheap, easy to construct. In a world searching for water supply systems, it is one important approach that can make an essential difference locally. It could make the difference between having water and not having water available.” There are some issues, however. For one, fog catchers require space, which is not always easy to come by in cities. At the same time, fog catchers must be properly cleaned and maintained to stay effective. Most crucially, appropriate climate conditions are required. Fog isn’t everywhere.
24. Why did Cruz set up EI Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua in 2005?
A. To offer water to people who need it badly. B. To construct the infrastructure for the city.
C. To build a canal system for his hometown. D. To raise money for the poorest residents.
25. What does the underlined word “deploy” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Design. B. Abandon. C. Apply. D. Explore.
26. What is the problem with fog catchers in urban areas?
A. High expenses. B. Public opposition. C. Space limitation. D. Technical faults.
27. Which of the following would be a suitable title for the text?
A. A practical application of fog catchers in cities
B. The development of a climate organization
C. The importance of infrastructure construction
D. A creative method of improving water supply
C
To adapt to climate change, some flowers are darkening their color to protect themselves from the suns radiation, new research shows.
The study suggests that over the past 75 years, the ultraviolet (UV) pigments (紫外线色素) in flowers have increased in response to rising temperatures and the thinning ozone layer (臭氧层). The flowers won’t look any different to humans, but insects consider the higher levels of UV pigments as a darker color, which could be confusing when they try to find out colorful flowers to land on.
The UV-absorbing pigments in flowers work like sunscreen and protect sensitive cells from harmful radiation, Matthew Koski, a plant ecologist at Clemson University, says. He and his team hoped to determine if changes in pigments were a result of environmental change-and if so, what are the plants responding to? The team collected dried, pressed plants across North America, Australia and Europe. In total, they studied 1, 238 samples from 42 different species dating back to 1941. Then, using a UV-sensitive camera, they photographed flower petals(花瓣) from each species. Next, they paired the photographs with the historic local temperature and ozone level data from the time the plant was picked to see how the pigment level changed over time.
The researchers found that the changes in pigments differ between species, a result of the flowers structure. Flowers with open, exposed pollen(花粉) had more UV-absorbing pigments when ozone levels were low and radiation was high. But flowers with pollen surrounded by the petal responded to temperatures, not ozone levels.
As climate change continues to heighten, these changes in flowers color can affect plant-insect interactions. When the whole flowers get darker, insects might miss the flowers entirely. “This has a negative influence on plant reproduction,” Koski says.
28. What is the cause of flowers color changing according to the research?
A. The thickening of the ozone layer. B. The impact of the climate crisis.
C. The harm of nuclear radiation. D. The loss of natural habitats.
29. How did Koski’s team get their findings?
A. By collecting abundant samples from various species.
B. By collecting photographs of flowers from different species.
C. By analyzing historic local temperature and ozone level data.
D. By analyzing how levels of UV pigments change over time.
30. What can we learn about the change in pigments?
A. It varies depending on the flowers structure.
B. It responds to temperatures and sea levels.
C. It remains the same regardless of species.
D. It exists in flowers with exposed pollen only.
31. What is Koski’s attitude toward the change in flowers color?
A. Indifferent. B. Concerned. C. Unclear. D. Optimistic.

Leo Ajayi, aged 15, and Jim Green, aged 14, were good friends. Every autumn the two families would go together on a trip to the Rocky Mountains. This year, under the guidance of park workers, they camped on the hillside. After putting up the tents, the two boys announced to climb Cathedral Mountain nearby on their own next morning and promised their parents to return before dark.
Early the following day, the friends set off with a bag packed with food and water. Along the winding path, they admired a sea of colourful leaves spreading beneath their feet. As they got near to the top, the path was rocky and less-traveled. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop. Lost in the breathtaking scenery, they felt refreshed from tiredness. How worthwhile the trip was!
Having got enough rest, Leo and Jim decided to climb down. Suddenly, trouble began. On one very dangerous part of the mountain, Jim fell three metres off the side of the path. Leo climbed down to where Jim was and found him badly injured and not able to move.
“Help!” Leo shouted. NO REPLY. “Help! Help!” Leo almost cried. But still no replies. “If only I had brought my mobile phone in the bag,” Leo thought, regretful and sad. Taking a deep breath, he tried to calm himself down. Then he noticed Jim was bleeding. So he cleaned the dirt and blood from Jim’s face and hands, and then tried to help Jim stand up, but Jim’s right leg was hurting too much. They had to wait and hope that help would come. While they waited for help, Leo gave Jim his food and water and let him lie on his jacket. Leo used an extra shirt to keep Jim warm and they rested together against a rock. However, as darkness started to fall, the weather turned cold and windy and help still didn’t arrive.

【录音原文】
Text 1
M:When did you learn to draw like that? Did you take lessons when you were a kid?
W:No, I learned it in college during the summer. I thought about taking an art class in high school, but at the time I was too busy to handle many lessons.
Text 2
M:Can you hand me that pen? This one doesn't work anymore.
W:I didn't remember to bring an extra one. Here, you can use my pencil, but you need to sharpen it first.
Text 3
M:Jenny! I wasn't expecting you at this time. I thought you weren't getting to the party until after 7:00.
W:Yeah, I didn't have to work overtime tonight. My boss actually let me off when he said he would. Who could have guessed?
Text 4
W:I will never go anywhere with Bill ever again. He can never remember where he parks his car.
M:That certainly sounds like Bill.
Text 5
W:Here's ten dollars. I'll pick you up in thirty minutes at the front of the mall. Find a nice gift for your friend's birthday.
M:Aw, Mom! Can't I have twenty?
Text 6
M:Will you plug this in ... Oh, wait a second ... let me just look at this message.
W:You're always looking at messages on your phone! How many messaging apps do you have, David?
M:Four? Five? Maybe six by now ...
W:If you have an average of 10 people on each of those six social networks who send you messages every day, that's at least 60 conversations! Let's say you spend as little as one minute on each conversation ... That's a whole hour! But you would probably spend two or three times that much for each person ... What a waste of time!
M:Calm down, Maggie. It's my mother. We're making plans for the weekend. She's one of the five people I regularly text.
Text 7
W:Hello, Mr White. Do you think it's possible for us to talk sometime today?
M:I'd love to, Miss Wilson, but I've got a pretty tight schedule today. I've got to finish reading the yearly financial report by 10. Then I have to drive to the airport to pick up an advertiser at 11. After that, I'll have a meeting with him over lunch.
W:Can I see you after lunch?
M:Well, let me see ... after lunch, I have to attend a senior staff meeting, which may last about two hours. Can you come at 3? We can talk for an hour before I meet my sales team at 4.
W:I'm afraid an hour is too short. What about tomorrow morning?
M:9 to 11, then. I'll wait for you at the office.
W:OK, see you then.
Text 8
W:Hello, Bruce. I haven't seen you this past autumn.
M:I know. My parents put me in a private school.
W:What do you think so far?
M:The school is really nice.
W:I heard that you can't wear the clothes you want. Is that true?
M:Yeah. We have to wear a dress shirt, a tie, and dress pants every day.
W:Really?
M:Yeah, but there are other cool things. They don't take away our phones, and we are all getting our own personal computers when the spring comes.
W:That does sound cool! Do you have much homework for the holiday?
M:I just completed a book report, but I have a quiz on Africa when I get back. How about you?
W:All I have to do is read some chapters from my science textbook.
M:Since we both aren't busy, why don't we plan to meet up for a cup of coffee?
W:I'd love to. It will give us a chance to catch up.
M:Yeah, and it will give me a chance to wear something other than a uniform!
Text 9
M:Hey, Alice. I'm sorry I am late.
W:Don't worry about it. Did you have trouble finding a spot to park?
M:Actually, that wasn't the problem. I left early enough to avoid the traffic, but I couldn't get across the bridge.
W:What's happening on the bridge?
M:I couldn't tell. I just saw the road signs, so I turned around and took the long way here.
W:Well, it looks like we missed the worst of the weather. It was pouring this morning.
M:That's good. I can see the sky is clearing up and the wind has stopped. What are those tents for?
W:They're for the food fair. It will close soon, so you'd better get over there if you want to eat. Unfortunately, you came a bit late for the music.
M:So what is this event all about, anyway?
W:It's just a community festival we have every year. All the food, entertainment and activities represent the many cultures in our city.
M:Cool. What's happening across the street at the stadium? I saw that the local TV stations are all set up there.
W:That's where all the dancing and sports events will take place. This area is for families. I saved us this spot on the grass here.
M:That sounds fun. I'll go grab something at the tents, and then meet you back here.

【22题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三个小标题Strange Encounter on Coho Creek by Morris Homer Erwin中的“When we shared this classic on rd. com in 2019, it went viral and it has now been read by many millions online and in print.( 2019年,当我们在rd. com分享这部经典作品时,它迅速传播开来,现在已经有数百万人在网上和印刷品上阅读了它。)”可知,这个故事在网上被疯狂转发,非常受欢迎。故选D。

【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“Shocked by the water shortages and expensive water supply that some of the city’s poorest residents were suffering, Cruz set up EI Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua in 2005. (一些城市最贫穷的居民面临着水资源短缺和昂贵的供水,Cruz感到震惊,于2005年成立了El Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua。)”和下文“He began installing (安装) a traditional fog catcher model developed in the 1980s. (他开始安装上世纪80年代开发的传统捕雾器模型。)”可知,此处讲述了Cruz产生该想法是因为被当地的水资源贫乏情况震惊,他有了想法后便着手解决该问题。由此可知,这种想法应该是将之前在家乡学到的收集水的方法“使用”到新的环境中,划线词意思应该是“使用”,与employ意思相近。故选C。

【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Next, they paired the photographs with the historic local temperature and ozone level data from the time the plant was picked to see how the pigment level changed over time.(接下来,他们将这些照片与采摘植物时当地的历史温度和臭氧水平数据配对,看看色素水平是如何随时间变化的)”可知,科斯基的团队通过分析紫外线色素水平随时间的变化得到他们的发现。故选D。

Feeling low, Jim told Leo to leave him alone and go back himself. But Leo still did not leave. He thought it was too dangerous for Jim to be alone on such a cold, windy night. Cold autumn wind made Leo shivering. Disappointment welled up inside him. Leo knew he had to do something other than staying still. Weighing the pros and cons, Leo finally decided that the only way to help his friend was to carry him down the mountain. So, Leo carried Jim on his back and they started the long climb back to the campsite. But the mountainous path was even tougher and more rocky for Leo to climb down, let alone Jim was on his back.
Seeing this, Jim asked Leo to leave him alone again. Leo felt a surge of bitterness and shook his head without a word. Suddenly, a beam of light flashed. Great joy consumed them and Leo shouted his loudest “help”. Out came a park worker with a flashlight, who was searching for the boys. With the help of the worker, they were rescued and reunited with their concerned parents. “I will always remember what Leo did for me,” said Jim afterwards. “He saved my life. That is the greatest thing that a person can do for his friend.”

【录音原文】
Text 1
M:When did you learn to draw like that? Did you take lessons when you were a kid?
W:No, I learned it in college during the summer. I thought about taking an art class in high school,
but at the time I was too busy to handle many lessons.
Text 2
M:Can you hand me that pen? This one doesn't work anymore.
W:I didn't remember to bring an extra one. Here, you can use my pencil, but you need to sharpen it
first.
Text 3
M:Jenny! I wasn't expecting you at this time. I thought you weren't getting to the party until after 7:
00.
Find a nice gift for
your friend's birthday.
M:Aw, Mom! Can't I have twenty?
Text 6
M:Will you plug this in ... Oh, wait a second ... let me just look at this message.
W:You're always looking at messages on your phone! How many messaging apps do you have, David?
M:Four? Five? Maybe six by now ...
W:If you have an average of 10 people on each of those six social networks who send you messages
every day, that's at least 60 conversations! Let's say you spend as little as one minute on each
conversation ... That's a whole hour! But you would probably spend two or three times that much for
each person ... What a waste of time!
M:Calm down, Maggie. It's my mother. We're making plans for the weekend. She's one of the five
people I regularly text.
Text 7
W:Hello, Mr White. Do you think it's possible for us to talk sometime today?
M:I'd love to, Miss Wilson, but I've got a pretty tight schedule today. I've got to finish reading the
yearly financial report by 10. Then I have to drive to the airport to pick up an adve rtiser at 11. After
that, I'll have a meeting with him over lunch.
W:Can I see you after lunch?
M:Well, let me see ... after lunch, I have to attend a senior staff meeting, which may last about two
hours.
They don't take away our phones, and we are all getting our
own personal computers when the spring comes.
W:That does sound cool! Do you have much homework for the holiday?
M:I just completed a book report, but I have a quiz on Africa when I g et back.
I left early enough to avoid the traffic, but I couldn't get acr oss
the bridge.
All the food, entertainment and activities represent
the many cultures in our city.
M:Cool. What's happening across the street at the stadium? I saw that the local TV stations are all set
up there.
W:That's where all the dancing and sports events will take place. This area is for families. I saved us
this spot on the grass here.
M:That sounds fun. I'll go grab something at the tents, and then meet you back here.

和下文“He began installing (安装) a traditional fog catcher model developed in the 1980s. (他开始安装上世纪
80年代开发的传统捕雾器模型。)”可知,此处讲述了Cruz产生该想法是因为被当地的水资源贫乏情况震惊,

【答案】
Feeling low, Jim told Leo to leave him alone and go back himself. But Leo still did not leave. He thought it
was too dangerous for Jim to be alone on such a cold, windy night. Cold autumn wind made Leo shivering.
Disappointment welled up inside him. Leo knew he had to do something other than staying still. Weighing the pros
and cons, Leo finally decided that the only way to help his friend was to carry him down the mountain. So, Leo
carried Jim on his back and they started the long climb back to the campsite. But the mountainous path was even
tougher and more rocky for Leo to climb down, let alone Jim was on his back.
Seeing this, Jim asked Leo to leave him alone again. Leo felt a surge of bitterness and shook his head without
a word. Suddenly, a beam of light flashed. Great joy consumed them and Leo shouted his loudest “help”. Out came
a park worker with a flashlight, who was searching for the boys. With the help of the worker, they were rescued
and reunited with their concerned parents. “I will always remember what Leo did for me,” said Jim afterwards. “He
saved my life. That is the greatest thing that a person can do for his friend.”

Text 10
Jin Yong, the famous Chinese novelist, wrote 15 books about martial arts. He is considered to be one of the three greatest wuxia writers and Hong Kong's most famous writer. Jin was the bestselling Chinese author of all time, with over 300 million copies of his works sold worldwide. Jin was born in Zhejiang Province, the second of seven children. Even as a boy, Jin enjoyed writing. He was admitted to the Department of Foreign Languages at the Central University of Political Affairs in Chongqing, but he left to study international law at Soochow University. Jin was planning to have a career in the foreign service, but in 1955, he began
writing his first martial arts novel, The Book and the Sword. In 1957, while still working on wuxia novels, Jin got a job writing movie scripts at Great Wall Movie Enterprises Ltd. and Phoenix Film Company. In 1959, Jin cofounded the Hong Kong newspaper Ming Pao with a high school classmate. Many of Jin's most famous wuxia novels appeared in the newspaper, including The Smiling, Proud Wanderer and The Deer and the Cauldron. Jin Yong fused martial arts, fantasy, history and romance into mustread novels. Many years after he had stopped writing novels, Jin earned his Doctor of Philosophy from Cambridge University in 2010.

【答案】An eight-kilometer hike
In order to build up students’ body and enrich our school life, the Students’ Union organized an eight-kilometer hike for all Senior Two students last Saturday.
We gathered at the school gate and set off at 2 p. m. that day. Half an hour’s walk later, we began to climb the Longquan Mountain standing in the east of the city, covering about eight kilometers in total. To our amazement, none of the students failed to complete the whole journey despite the distance and heat. It was the breathtaking scenery accompanying us along the road that relieved our fatigue.
Not only has the activity helped us improve our physical condition, but it has strengthened the friendship among us. All the students consider it meaningful and look forward to such an activity again.

【答案】

By our very rough calculations, Reader’s Digest has published some 35,000 articles in nearly
1,200 issues. These small pages have held some very big names, including U.S. presidents, world
leaders, sports legends, and, indeed, the biggest contributors of all, everyday Americans with a
story to tell. These are some of our proudest moments.
How to Keep Young Mentally by Mary B. Mullett
This first article in the first issue highlighted inventor Alexander Graham Bell and his belief
in lifelong learning: “The first essential of any real education is to observe. Observe! Remember!
Compare!” It was an appropriate beginning reflecting our self-educated founder’s endless
curiosity.
I’ve Come to Clean Your Shoes by Madge Harrah
The morning of a family funeral, an acquaintance shows up unannounced and says, “I’ve
come to clean your shoes.” He spends the day quietly shining every pair in the house. The writer
ends with: “Now, whenever I hear of an acquaintance who has lost a loved one, I try to think of
one specific task suiting that person’s need. And if the person says, ‘How did you know I needed
that done?’ I reply, ‘it’s because a man once cleaned my shoes.’”
Strange Encounter on Coho Creek by Morris Homer Erwin
A miner spends days camping in the Alaskan wilderness, working hard to earn the trust of a
mother wolf stuck in a trap before she and her four pups starve to death. Eventually, he is able to
free her. Four years later, he encounters a wolf in the same meadow. Yes, the same wolf. When
we shared this classic on rd.com in 2019, it went viral and it has now been read by many millions
online and in print.
How Honest Are We by Ralph Kinney Bennett
Our famous “wallet drop” set up the ultimate test of honesty: If we left wallets in cities around
the country, how many would be returned? Well over half, it turned out—67 percent. The most
honest city?

For Cruz, who grew up in Peru’s mountainous region of Cuzco, fog represents a massive
opportunity. As a boy, he had to hike for more than an hour every day across rough hills to collect
water from the nearest source. But over time, he realized that during the rainy season, drops of
water would gather in the large leaves of banana trees. One day, he and his father built a canal
system with the leaves to collect water. He moved to Lima at the age of 25.
Shocked by the water shortages and expensive water supply that some of the city’s poorest
residents were suffering, Cruz set up EI Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua in 2005. The idea was to
deploy the method he learned in his hometown on a larger, better-adapted scale, which would
provide free, independently sourced and easily accessible water to those who needed it most. He
began installing (安装) a traditional fog catcher model developed in the 1980s. The nonprofit
provided the materials for free, and the community built the infrastructure (基础设施) themselves.
At the highest point of Los Tres Miradores, there is a curious set of large structures that is
like a fleet of ships in the sky. They are so-called “fog catchers”. The 40 fog catchers there provide
enough water for 180 families, whether to bathe, clean, drink (after being filtered at home) or to
irrigate crops on small garden patches.
Supporters believe that fog catchers have the potential to improve water supply for
communities around the world amid ever-challenging conditions. German researcher Lummerich
says, “They are cheap, easy to construct. In a world searching for water supply systems, it is one
important approach that can make an essential difference locally. It could make the difference
between having water and not having water available.” There are some issues, however. For one,
fog catchers require space, which is not always easy to come by in cities. At the same time, fog
catchers must be properly cleaned and maintained to stay effective. Most crucially, appropriate
climate conditions are required. Fog isn’t everywhere.
24. Why did Cruz set up EI Movimiento Peruanos sin Agua in 2005?
A. To offer water to people who need it badly. B. To construct the infrastructure for the city.
C. To build a canal system for his hometown. D. To raise money for the poorest residents.

25. What does the underlined word “deploy” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Design. B. Abandon. C. Apply. D. Explore.
26. What is the problem with fog catchers in urban areas?
A. High expenses. B. Public opposition. C. Space limitation. D. Technical faults.
27. Which of the following would be a suitable title for the text?
A. A practical application of fog catchers in cities
B. The development of a climate organization
C. The importance of infrastructure construction
D. A creative method of improving water supply

To adapt to climate change, some flowers are darkening their color to protect themselves
from the suns radiation, new research shows.
The study suggests that over the past 75 years, the ultraviolet (UV) pigments (紫外线色素)
in flowers have increased in response to rising temperatures and the thinning ozone layer (臭氧
层). The flowers won’t look any different to humans, but insects consider the higher levels of UV
pigments as a darker color, which could be confusing when they try to find out colorful flowers
to land on.
The UV-absorbing pigments in flowers work like sunscreen and protect sensitive cells from
harmful radiation, Matthew Koski, a plant ecologist at Clemson University, says. He and his team
hoped to determine if changes in pigments were a result of environmental change-and if so, what
are the plants responding to? The team collected dried, pressed plants across North America,
Australia and Europe. In total, they studied 1, 238 samples from 42 different species dating back
to 1941. Then, using a UV-sensitive camera, they photographed flower petals(花瓣) from each
species. Next, they paired the photographs with the historic local temperature and ozone level
data from the time the plant was picked to see how the pigment level changed over time.
The researchers found that the changes in pigments differ between species, a result of the
flowers structure. Flowers with open, exposed pollen(花粉) had more UV-absorbing pigments
when ozone levels were low and radiation was high. But flowers with pollen surrounded by the
petal responded to temperatures, not ozone levels.
As climate change continues to heighten, these changes in flowers color can affect plant-
insect interactions.

Every autumn the two
families would go together on a trip to the Rocky Mountains. This year, under the guidance of
park workers, they camped on the hillside. After putting up the tents, the two boys announced to
climb Cathedral Mountain nearby on their own next morning and promised their parents to return
before dark.
Early the following day, the friends set off with a bag packed with food and water. Along
the winding path, they admired a sea of colourful leaves spreading beneath their feet. As they got
near to the top, the path was rocky and less-traveled. After three hours, they reached the top and
enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop. Lost in the breathtaking scenery, they felt
refreshed from tiredness. How worthwhile the trip was!
Having got enough rest, Leo and Jim decided to climb down. Suddenly, trouble began. On
one very dangerous part of the mountain, Jim fell three metres off the side of the path. Leo
climbed down to where Jim was and found him badly injured and not able to move.
“Help!” Leo shouted. NO REPLY. “Help! Help!” Leo almost cried. But still no replies. “If
only I had brought my mobile phone in the bag,” Leo thought, regretful and sad. Taking a deep
breath, he tried to calm himself down. Then he noticed Jim was bleeding. So he cleaned the dirt
and blood from Jim’s face and hands, and then tried to help Jim stand up, but Jim’s right leg was
hurting too much. They had to wait and hope that help would come. While they waited for help,
