2 A Animal Reiki: Using Energy to Heal the Animals in Your Life is a complete guide to healing all kinds of animals with Reiki. It is appropriate for people who are unfamiliar with Reiki as well as experienced Reiki practitioners. The book is available in bookstores or you can order it through www.amazon.com and other on-line booksellers. The book provides a thorough introduction to Animal Reiki, including step-by-step instructions for treating animals. It shows how Reiki treatments allow animals to be active partners in the healing process, how Reiki helps to develop the healer’s intuition (直觉), and how Reiki deepens the bond between humans and animals. Using Reiki with animals can differ in some important ways from using Reiki with people, and this book contains all the information needed to begin healing animals successfully under a wide range of circumstances, as well as many inspiring stories from the authors’ broad experience. The book has a wonderful foreword by Cheryl Schwartz, a pioneer in bringing traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture to animals, author of Four Paws, Five Directions, and a founding member of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (美国整体曽医`会). Some of the topics covered include: • How to give a basic Animal Reiki treatment • Guidelines for using Reiki with any animal under any circumstance • Separate sections on cats, dogs, horses, birds, small animals, farm animals, special needs animals, wild animals, fish, reptiles, and amphibians • Advanced Reiki: using Level 2 Reiki with animals • Helping dying animals with Reiki • Enhancing communication with animals • Offering Reiki beyond your own animal family Reiki has been practiced throughout the world for many years, including at over 300 major hospitals and medical centers in the U.S. Until recently, Reiki healing was available only to humans, but increasing numbers of Reiki practitioners are establishing practices devoted exclusively to animals. In 2022, the total number of veterinarians in the United States reached 124069. And almost 0.1 percent of them are now listed in the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (AHVMA) directory as Reiki practitioners. 21. What is the book Animal Reiki aimed at? A. He wrote the foreword to Animal Reiki. D. He is one of the authors of Animal Reiki. 23. How many veterinarians are now Reiki practitioners in America? A. About 120. B. Almost 12000. C. Over 1000. D. Less than 100. B At nine o’clock one morning in late July, Gatsby drove up to the front of my house and sounded the horn of his car. <Good morning, Nick,= he said when I opened the door. <We’re having lunch today and I thought we’d ride there together.= I looked with admiration at his car. <It’s pretty, isn’t it? Haven’t you seen it before?= <Yes, of course. It’s gorgeous.= Everybody knew Gatsby’s car. It was a rich cream color, almost yellow and had green leather seats. There was plenty of space in it for all kinds of boxes --- hat boxes, picnic boxes and tool boxes. I got in and he drove off through West Egg. I’d talked with him half a dozen times in the last month and found, to my disappointment, that he had little to say. I no longer thought that he was an important person. He was just the owner of the big house next door. So I was surprised when he suddenly turned to me and said, <What’s your opinion of me, Nick?= I didn’t know what to say. <I’m going to tell you about my life,= he continued. <I don’t want you to get a wrong idea from the stories you hear.= So he knew about the strange things people said about him. <I will tell you the truth,= he said. <I’m the son of some wealthy people from the Midwest. I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford. All my ancestors have been there. It’s a family tradition.= He said <educated at Oxford= very quickly and checked my reaction with a sideways look. Now I understand why Jordan didn’t believe this story. Perhaps there really was something sinister about him. <But then all my family died and I inherited lots of money.= I looked at him. For a moment I thought he was joking but his face was very serious. 24. What can we learn from the passage? - 3 - A. Nick is Gatsby’s neighbor. B. Nick admires Gatsby a lot. C. Nick knows Gatsby very well. D. Nick talks a lot with Gatsby. 25. Why did Gatsby stress <It’s a family tradition=? A. To explain where his money came from. B. To show off his family’s great wealth to Nick. C. To remember his family members who had passed away. D. To show that his family was not only rich but also well-educated. 26. What’s Nick’s attitude towards Gatsby’s account of his education experience? A. Interested. B. Unbelieving. C. Convinced. D. Indifferent 27. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. Nick became disappointed with Gatsby. B. Nick was eager to know more about Gatsby. C. Gatsby tried to convince Nick of his life story. D. Gatsby went for a drive with his new friend Nick. C Love it or hate it, there is no escape from Internet slang. This is especially true among young people in some English-speaking countries such as Australia, the UK, and the US. These days, if they haven’t caught up with the latest popular Internet slang, chances are that they often feel out of the loop on social media. Take these posts by The Washington Post for example: <David Bowie dying is totes tradge= and <When Cookie hugged Jamal, it made me totes emosh=. What on earth do these mean? Well, <totes= is a short form of the adverb <totally=. Likewise, <tradge= means <tragic= and <emosh= means <emotional=. It seems that for millennials (those born between the early 1980s and late 1990s), typing in this abbreviated (缩写) form is not only time-saving but also stylish. Many millennial slang words are formed by what linguists call the practice of totesing --- the systematic abbreviation of words, according to a recent article in The Washington Post. Some people think that millennial slang affects the English language negatively. However, Melbourne University linguist Rosey Billington doesn’t agree. <When you are able to use language in a creative way, you show you are linguistically knowledgeable because you know the language rules well enough to use words in a different way,= Billington told News.com. Her view is backed up by two linguists, Lauren Spradlin, and Taylor Jones, from the City University of New York and the University of Pennsylvania respectively. The two believe that totes-speak is a highly-organized system that can only be used by speakers who have mastered English pronunciation, <The ability to break apart syllables and mix different sounds together is key. Totesing is about sounds, - 4 - and it follows the sometimes-complicated sound system of English,= Jones told The Washington Post. Totesing is not random (随意的). On the contrary, it has strict rules to follow. You need to be very fluent in the English language to be able to understand totes-speak. 28. The underlined phrase <out of the loop= in the second paragraph probably means ______. A. declined by others B. welcomed by others C. unaware of certain information D. clear about certain information 29. What are the characteristics of millennial slang? A. Useless but time-saving. B. Time-saving and fashionable. C. Complicated and outdated. D. Systematic but time-consuming. 30. What does Lauren Spradlin think of the practice of totesing? A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Confusing. D. Critical. 31. Which of the following might Taylor Jones agree with? A. Internet slang is mostly created by professional linguists. B. Totesing is mainly about making words easier to pronounce. C. Totesing requires speakers to master the language’s rules very well. D. Internet slang should be prevented since it is difficult to understand. D Have you ever found that you were able to sleep better with an air conditioner or fan running or perhaps with the sound of rain falling outside? If so, then you’re already familiar with white noise. White noise refers to a noise that has a mixture of all the audible frequencies (听得见的频率) that the human ear can detect. It is a combination of all the frequencies of sound played at once. It can cover the sounds of other noises because of its various frequencies, leading many people to experience its calming effects. Studies have that listening to white noise positively found affects sleep. For example, people living in a high-noise area of New York City fell asleep faster and spent more of their time in bed asleep while listening to white noise. In another study, listening to white noise through headphones improved sleep quality for seriously ill patients in a loud hospital room. However, more research is needed to confirm whether the characteristics of white noise itself improve sleep or whether the sound primarily helps by covering background noise. However, a recent analysis of multiple studies looking at white noise’s effect on sleep has produced mixed results. The researchers are doubtful about the quality of existing evidence and conclude that further research is necessary in order to widely recommend white noise as a sleep aid. They also note that in some instances, white noise can disturb a person’s sleep and may affect their hearing. Despite that, researchers are still optimistic that the steady hum of white noise might reduce a sleeper’s - 5 - sensitivity to unpredictable noises from the environment, such as transportation sounds like cars and planes, which are considered a major contributor to poor sleep. 32. Why does white noise have calming effects? A. It can absorb other noises. B. It can help people sleep better. C. It can be detected by human ears. D. It can cover the sounds of other noises. 33. How does the author explain the benefits of white noise? A. By giving examples. B. By telling stories. C. By listing statistics. D. By making comparisons. 34. Which statement may researchers agree with according to the last two paragraphs? A. White noise’s effect on sleep still remains in doubt. B. Harmful effects of white noise have become a major concern. C. Poor sleep will make people sensitive to the unpredictable noises. D. More researches are needed to confirm the effect of white noise on sleep. 35. Which of the following can be a suitable tile for the text? A. How Does White Noise Work? B. Does White Noise Help You Sleep? C. Is White Noise Harmful in Any Way? D. What Are the Benefits of White Noise? 第二节ÿ共 5小题Ā每小题 2.5分,满分 12.5分Ā 阅读Q面短文,从短文^的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项2选项中有两项为多余选项2 Is there a link between social media and depression? (36) ______ It’s complicated. He had just finished trying out for the football team in his high school, and of course he made it. After all, he had been playing football for almost ten years. Football was a way of life in Mark’s family. His father was a coach in a primary school. His elder brother Roy was now playing at a top college. Mark was expected to follow his brother’s footsteps and make his family proud. But he had a secret. Though he was good at football, Mark’s heart wasn’t in it anymore. He had another sport on his mind. Wiping the sweat from his forehead, Mark hopped on the school bus heading home. Through the bus window, he could see the cheerleading squad (啦啦队) on the field. The cheerleaders were kicking, dancing, and performing amazing moves. Mark was fascinated. In fact, he had been attracted by cheerleading for some time. He pulled out a piece of paper from his schoolbag. Printed across the top in big letters was the phrase: Cheerleaders Wanted. That’s what Mark really wanted to do. His love for football had gone away months ago, and he longed for being a cheerleader instead of a football player. He knew that cheerleading would not only be a physical challenge; it would also be an emotional one, too. His family had such high expectations for him when it came to football. The poem is a masterpiece with only four lines, written by Wang Zhihuan, a famous poet in the Tang Dynasty. In the first two lines, the writer portrays a spectacular sight featuring the setting sun against high mountains and the Yellow River by using the typical technique of Chinese poems-antithesis. The last two lines convey the poet’s great ambition hidden in the metaphor of <great height= on the Stork Tower, which makes the poem a long-standing classic quoted in many contexts. Hope my recommendation can be of any help. If there is anything I can do, please do not hesitate to ask me. Yours, Li Hua 第二节 读后续写 <Yes, I made it. But I don’t want to play football anymore,= he replied. No sooner had they heard the stunning words than his parents were frozen to the spot. With eyebrows knitted and mouths dropped open, they held Mark’s hands firmly, asking what was wrong with him. Mark was too ashamed to meet their eyes. After a while, summoning up all his courage, Mark explained what had happened to his beloved parents. Flushed with embarrassment, he made a sincere apology to his dad and mom, <Sorry, I didn’t mean to lie to you. But I really want to try cheerleading.= Hearing his apology, Mark’s parents calmed down and smiled. In a mild voice, they comforted Mark who was in low spirits. <It is absolutely OK to pursue what you really love,= said Mom. Looking up from the floor, Mark couldn’t believe what he heard. He felt a ton lighter on his shoulders. He felt a lump in his throat and couldn’t stammer out a word from his trembling lips. With teary eyes, he held his parents into his arms and thanked them for their trust. Admittedly, parents’ trust and unconditional love will empower a child for his whole life.
