Sea grasses meadow (草地) are plants that grow in waters near coasts. They help clean the ocean’s water and also provide food for animals like fish. However, sometimes they are in danger. The climate change and human pollution are threatening sea grass meadow in many places around the world.
But the huge sea grass meadow in Shark Bay, off the coast of Western Australia, seems to be growing very well. Scientists from The University of Western Australia and Flinders University wanted to study the sea grass, so they took samples (样本) from 10 different parts of this huge meadow. By comparing the DNA from their samples, the scientists hoped to get an idea of how many different sea grass plants there were in the meadow.
What they learned surprised them—all of the grass samples had almost exactly the same DNA.It meant that they were all just one plant. One big sea grass plant spread out over 200 square kilometers.
So how has the Shark Bay sea grass grown so large? Instead of spreading with flowers and seeds (种子), it spreads by cloning (克隆) itself. As its roots (根) spread out under the sea floor, new plants shoot up from those roots. The Shark Bay sea grass generally grows and spreads about 35 centimeters a year. Plants are rooted (扎根) in one place. They can’t run away from danger or walk over the sunny side of the garden. So they have to develop some special ways to protect themselves and grow in the nature.
Some scientists found that plants can sense their surroundings. You’ve all seen plants grow towards light which is called phototropism (向光性). Even if the top of them are cut off, the plants don’t change the direction. They sense the light and tell the rest of the plants how to grow then.
Some plants “talk” with each other by using “airmail” to warn each other of danger. Researchers in England cut the leaves of cabbages. The cabbages then produce a tiny number of chemicals (化学物质) that protect themselves from some insects. Strangely, the cabbages which aren’t cut nearby also begin to give off their own different chemicals. That means they seem to receive a warning from their cabbage neighbors.
Most amazingly, plants have a great system of communication that can connect nearly every plant in a forest by fungi (真菌). It connects the roots of different plants to each other. Scientists call the system the “wood wide web”, similar to the Internet we use. Using the network, plants can communicate and share information and even food with each other.
Whatever the case, plants are stranger and more wonderful than we can imagine.

Since the astronauts stay in space for a longer and longer time, carrying all food to space becomes more and more difficult. So, “space planting” becomes very important. The Shenzhou XI astronauts managed to grow lettuce (生菜), from sowing to harvest. After that, the “space famers” have successfully grown wheat, rice. The most recent visitors to China’s space station, the Shenzhou XVII astronauts are now growing lettuce and cherry tomato. These “space gardens” not only provide astronauts with food but also more oxygen and water.
Now the astronauts want to step out of the space station and explore the possibility of growing plants on the moon.
A new study Chinese scientists has found that bacteria (细菌) in soil from Earth could offer a solution. Researchers from China Agricultural University found out three kinds of bacteria from Earth ware good for plant growth.
They then grew model plants in the lunar soil with the bacteria. They found that the plants had longer stems (茎) and roots after six days of growth compared with those grown without the bacteria. The plants also had hcavier and wider leaves afler 24 days of growth. Besides, levels of chlorophyll (叶绿素) in the model plants were about double that of those grown without bacteria.
“The study results have an important influcnce for future long-term stays on the moon.” the study’s lead researcher, Sun Zhencai said. Earth bacteria may help astronauts make better use of lunar resources, such as creating lunar greenhouses. In their following research, they hope to grow crops like rice, corn and potatoes with real lunar soil samples.

I learned to cook at around 12 years old. The first skill I learned was making dough (面团). In my hometown of Ningxia, people make noodles in the evening. Since my parents often came home late, a prepared dough would help my family have supper sooner. I thought it would be easy because I often saw my mom do it—just mix water and flour (面粉), right? Not quite! It turned out to be a mess for a while. First I made the dough too soft. Then I made it too hard. But as I kept trying, I finally made it. I fell in love with cooking. It’s a good way to relax. More importantly, the cooking skill helps me live better when I was alone. I can meal myself instead of waiting for others to feed me.
Besides cooking, I did a lot of farm work in my childhood. I got to know how to plant vegetables. The experience taught me things that many of my peers (同龄人) who grew up in cities still don’t know. For example, I learned that the fruits of peanut plants (花生植株) grow under the soil. I once discussed this with my friends from the city. They thought it was a pity that they didn’t have the chance to learn these things in their lives. The experience of farming brings me a new way to look at the world and teaches me to value everything on my plate.
This may be why I’m so happy to hear that labor education will be required in China. Students in primary and middle schools will have at least one class every week to learn basic household skills like cooking and cleaning. Trust me. These practical skills will help you for the rest of your life.

According to a new study, the Amazon rainforest (亚马逊雨林) may become grassland in a few years.
The Amazon is the world’s biggest rainforest. Climate change (气候变化) and human activities make it “sick”. Usually, the rainforest can fix itself. But now, it feels too “tired” to get better. The frees may die and the rainforest could turn into a hot, dry grassland.
Why is the Amazon “sick”?
The Amazon is one of the world’s wettest places. But since 2005, three droughts (干旱) have hit the rainforest. They were caused by climate change. The trees don’t have enough water to grow. What’s worse, as they become dry, they can easily catch fire.
On top of this, people cut down rainforest trees for wood. They burn the forest to make farmland. They clear trees to find minerals (矿产). All these activities have caused about 17 percent of the rainforest to disappear.
What will happen if we lose it?
The Amazon is like the lungs (肺) of our planet. The rich plants there take carbon dioxide (CO2, 二氧化碳) out of the air and make oxygen (氧气). They make more than 20 percent of the planet’s oxygen. If the Amazon “dies”, there will be more CO2 and our Earth will become even hotter.
The Amazon is also home to over 3 million animals and plants. Many of them can’t live anywhere else. They would very likely just disappear.

A.ab B.bc C.cd D.ad
25.What does the word “disappear” in the story mean?
A.be gone B.stay useful
C.become hotter D.come back to life
26.Why is the Amazon called “the lungs” of Earth?
A.Because it makes over one-fifth of Earth’s oxygen.
B.Because it has 17 percent of Earth’s minerals.
C.Because people and animals can breathe more casily there.
D.Because it is the coolest place on Earth.
27.What does the writer want to show with the last two paragraphs?
A.The future of our planet. B.The importance of the Amazon.
C.The real cause of climate change. D.The reason for animals to live in the Amazon.

On November 13, 2023, people across Kenya took part in the country’s second national tree-planting holiday. The holiday was created by Kenya’s president to encourage people to plant trees as part of a plan to fight against the climate change.
Kenya is famous for its beautiful forests and wildlife. But large areas of Kenya’s forests have been cut down, either for the wood, to clear the land for farming, or both. And those trees would normally help absorb carbon dioxide (二氧化碳), a greenhouse gas that’s major cause for the climate change.
Currently, just 7% of Kenya is covered by trees. The president has a goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032. He hopes that will help Kenya cover 30% of its land with trees.
In early November, to help get Kenya’s massive tree-planting effort started, the government made November 13 a holiday—National Tree Growing Day. To prepare or the day, the government got 150 million seedlings (young trees) ready for planting.
The government created a special app to help organize the tree planting. The app is called JazaMiti, which means “fill with trees” in Swahili. The app helps people collect seedlings, find places to plant, and record their efforts. The app will also help the government know how many trees have been planted in different areas around the country.

The earth gives us special and important things that we need . We call these things natural resources. Air, sunlight, water, wood, and land are all natural resources.
Living things need clean air to breathe and clean water to drink. Plants need sunlight and land to grow, and we need plants for food. When plants breathe, they clean the air around them. We use the wood from plants and trees to make a lot of things, like paper, some houses, and furniture.
We shouldn’t hurt our natural resources because we can’t usually make more of them. Smoke from cars and factories makes the air dirty. If the air is dirty, people can get sick and plants can’t grow. If we cut down trees, we should plant new ones.
Trash is very bad for our natural resources. Sometimes people throw trash into water but we can’t drink dirty water, and plants can’t grow near it. Trash goes to places called landfills, and it stays there forever. Some landfills are dirty and they smell bad. People can’t use that land, and farmers can’t grow food on it.
We can all take care of the Earth’s resources. Here are some ideas:
★Use things until you can’t use them anymore.
★Don’t throw things away. Reuse them. Refill plastic drink bottles. Make toys from old things.
★Reduce the natural resources you use.
★Take your own bags to the store.

Tomatoes taste great. With a lot of vitamins, they are good for you, too! People all over the world enjoy this amazing fruit.
Not all tomatoes are red. They can be yellow, orange, pink, or white. All tomatoes are green before they are ready to be picked. Then the tomatoes turn their true color. That’s when they’re ready to eat!
Tomatoes first grew in the Americas. The Incas grew them over 1,000 years ago. They were introduced to Europe by the Spanish in the early 16th century. The Spanish and Italians seem to have been the first Europeans to accept them as food. In France, people grew tomatoes in the garden just to enjoy their beauty. Many people there thought tomatoes would make them sick. It was years before some of them would eat tomatoes.
Tomatoes are fruits. They grow from seeds. They won’t grow in cold weather. But with water, sunlight and warmth, tomatoes grow fast. They can grow in pots or in the ground. As the plant grows taller, people may tie it to a stick. Next is the blooming stage. Flowers appear. The flowers turn into fruit.
Some kinds of tomatoes can be picked in about six more weeks. Some tomatoes are large. One kind of tomato can weigh as much as two pounds.
You can eat raw tomatoes. First, wash them. Then, cut them up for salads or sandwiches. Tomatoes can be cooked, too. They can be grilled, boiled, or even fried. Do you use ketchup? It is made from tomatoes. Tomatoes don’t have a smell. But they taste great in foods around the world. Many dishes from India use tomatoes. Italians use them to make spaghetti sauce and pizza, too. Raw tomatoes are in Mexican salsa.

Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are important to sea creatures. About a quarter of all ocean life depends on coral reefs at some point in their life. However, this year, high sea-surface temperatures have killed a large number of coral reefs around the world.
In Dapeng Bay, the development of coral reefs is not satisfactory. Compared with healthy reefs, the ones in Dapeng Bay show big differences. First, healthy reefs have small areas which are home to sea creatures, while unhealthy reefs are covered by sea plants. Second, they make different sounds. Healthy reefs with plenty of sea creatures produce many kinds of sounds, like a band playing music pieces in the ocean. However, broken reefs with fewer kinds of sea creatures are much quieter. They can cause whales to lose direction and even swim to the coast.
The recent whale strandings (搁浅) in Dapeng Bay are probably related to the state of coral reefs. Unfriendly environmental activities do harm to the reefs and break the food web, changing the whales’ way of living. Water with high nutrient (营养) levels and city lighting have also made the whales swim closer to the coast.
The beautiful coral reefs are valuable for supporting ocean life. ...

Water is everywhere. It covers over two-thirds of Earth’s surface. Salt water in the oceans makes up most of Earth’s water. However, Earth has much less fresh water, which is very important for the survival of many plants and animals.
Water exists in nature in three states (状态) liquid, solid and gas. Liquid water is the most common state of water on Earth that we see in our everyday lives, such as in glasses, bowls and taps. Ice is another state of water—solid water. People form ice into different shapes. You’ve probably made ice cubes to cool down a drink. Artists even make ice sculptures. Gas is also a state of water. It is made up of water vapor (水蒸气), which happens naturally in the air.
Earth’s water is always changing from one state to another. When ice is heated, it becomes liquid water. When liquid water is cooled, it freezes and becomes ice. Liquid water can become a gas, too. Have you ever seen a pool of water dry up on a hot day? Energy from the Sun changed the liquid to a gas in a process called evaporation (汽化). Evaporation happens every day as the Sun beats down on Earth’s bodies of water. When water vapor in the air cools down, it changes from a gas to a liquid. This process is called condensation (液化). Clouds are made up of tiny drops of water formed by condensation. The tiny drops stick together, creating larger, heavier drops. If the drops become large enough, they fall as rain.
Water keeps plants alive and allows them to grow. People and other animals also need water to survive. So it is important to take care of Earth’s water. People are the main cause of water pollution. Littering and dumping trash lead to dirty and unusable water. Polluted water makes people, plants, and animals sick. Would you want to drink and play in polluted water?

A.Most of Earth’s water is fresh water.
B.When liquid water is cooled, it becomes a gas.
C.Salt water covers two-thirds of Earth’s surface.
D.Littering and dumping trash affect the quality of water.
53.What’s the main idea of this passage?
A.To introduce Earth’s water. B.To tell people the cause of water pollution.
C.To introduce different states of water. D.To teach people how to make an ice sculpture.
54.Where is this passage probably from?
A.A weather report. B.A book review.
C.A science magazine. D.A travel guidebook.

23.What does the new study show?
A.The Amazon rainforest was once grassland.
B.Rainforests can speedup climate change.
C.The Amazon will have few trees in the future.
D.Many people enjoy activities in the Amazon rainforest.
24.How do droughts make the Amazon rainforest “sick”?
a. They make plants grow more slowly.
b. They cause climate change.
c. They make the grass in the forest grow faster.
d. They make it easier for the forest to catch fire.
