She was in her early twenties, but looked as if life had beaten her down many times. Everything about her spelled hardship. The items in her cart included the cheapest cuts of meat, along with some inexpensive items. Carefully placed in a far corner sat a little doll, some animal stickers, and a 50%-off pretty dress. When it was her turn and the store employee finally calculated everything and told her the cost, her face paled. She opened her purse and began counting small bills and change. Obviously she didn’t have enough. She removed much-needed goods while the cashier patiently put them away with a pleasant smile. The child’s items remained in the cart, however. The man right behind me shouted loudly, and the young woman’s cheeks reddened with embarrassment. I wanted to pay for her groceries, but I knew that would hut her. Instead, I turned around and said to the man in a low voice, “Be grateful you’ve never had to do that!” And then, as she tried to decide what other necessity she could return, I said, “Take your time. I’m in no hurry.” The woman finally reduced her groceries, paid and moved down to bag them. When my turn came, I moved forward and placed several items with the pile of items the woman had taken out and whispered “ Separate bags, same bill please.” The cashier nodded and quickly complied. Then she “accidentally” rolled several oranges hard enough so that they flew past the lady and onto the floor. As the woman kindly ran to pick up the runaway fruit, I quickly put the two extra bags into her cart, along with a twenty-dollar bill. That night, as I sat with my husband, my thoughts went to the Lady who I hoped was enjoying a hearty meal with her little girl, and I hoped silently that her life would take an easier turn soon. 4. How did the woman in front impress the author? A. She was interested in spelling words. B. She had experienced hardship in life. C. She enjoyed buying things for her kids. D. She had just moved into the neighborhood. 5. What did the cashier do to help the author? A. She attracted the lady’s attention with some oranges. B. She packed some free fruit in a bag for the woman. C She blamed the man who had shouted at the woman. D. She managed to get a job appointment for the woman. 6. What does the underlined word “ complied” mean in paragraph 5? A. Refused B. Obeyed C. Advised. D. Paid. 7. Which of the following best describes the author? A. Humorous. B. Strict. C. Honest. D. Considerate. C How’ s your eyesight? From the moment we’ reborn, our eyes grow, our vision becomes clearer and some of us will have normal vision. However, others will become short-sighted (近视) and end up wearing glasses to help them see everything clearly. And some experts say that more of us will be wearing them in the future because of our lifestyle when we were younger. Even today, doctors are reporting arise in shortsightedness in children. The condition can be genetic (遗传的), but it’ s also partly caused by a number of modern-day factors — particularly children staring at phone screens, computers and game controllers for long periods of time. Of course, children have had increased screen time due to lockdowns (封控) during the Covid pandemic — it’ s been the only way to receive education and communicate with others. But education generally could be the cause of the rise in shortsightedness. Neema Mojarrad, lecturer at the University of Bradford, told BBC Future website, “Reading and spending more time indoors may be responsible for it. Every year of education increases the expected amount of shortsightedness.” The problem appears to be more serious in some Asian countries. Some experts say that in these places with huge educational success, children spend more time indoors studying. Therefore, it seems, spending more time outdoors could be good for children’ s eye health. The UK’ s College of Optometrists is suggesting parents should get their kids playing outside for two hours a day. Several scientific studies show this can prevent or stop the development of shortsightedness. There’s been a focus on using technology, such as laser (激光) surgery, for fixing shortsightedness, but for children at least, it seems a moment of daylight and a break from the screen might be part of the solution. Experts also recommend kids have regular eye tests to find out any prob lens before they become more serious. 8. How does the author introduce the topic in Paragraph 1? A. By raising a question. B. By telling a story. C. By giving an example. D. By introducing an expert. 9. What is a modern-day factor in children’ s shortsightedness? A. Genetic reason. B. Unexpected lockdown. C. Extra physical education. D. Increased screen time. 10. Why are more children short-sighted in the countries with huge educational success? A. They spend more time staring at screens. B. They spend less time playing indoors. C. They spend more time studying indoors. D. They spend less time taking eye tests. 11. What do experts suggest children doing to protect their eyesight? A. Receiving surgical operation. B. Taking regular examination. C Increasing indoor activities. D. Stay away from modern technologies. D After traveling through space for seven months, China’s Tianwen-1 has reached Mars and successfully entered the planet’s orbit on Wednesday—bringing it one step closer to landing on the surface. Tianwen-1, which got its name from an antient Chinese poem, is made up of an orbiter, lander and a six-wheeled rover (巡视器) carrying scientific instruments, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA). The CNSA said the probe is expected to land on the planet’s surface in May or June, and the rover is expected to stay for three months, with the hope that it can gather important information about Mars’ geological structure, atmosphere, environment and soil, and search for any signs of water. Tianwen-1 was launched last July, and its arrival in the Mars’s orbit makes China the sixth country in history to reach Mars. So far, the United States and the former Soviet Union are the only two countries to land a spacecraft on the surface of Mars. But the European Space Agency and India have already sent spacecraft to enter the planet’s orbit—and on Tuesday, the UAE joined their ranks, with its Hope Probe successfully entering orbit. With Tianwen-1, China is the first nation to attempt sending both an orbiter and a rover on its first Mars mission on its own. According to the scientific team behind the mission, the probe will “orbit, land and release a rover all on the very first try, and carry out experiments with an orbiter”. By contrast, NASA sent multiple orbiters to Mars before ever attempting a landing, since pulling off the landing is a far more difficult task. China’s first attempt to reach Mars was actually in 2011 with the Yinghuo-1 probe, which was supposed to orbit the red planet and study its environmental structure. It was launched from Kazakhstan together with the Russian Phobos-Grunt mission in November that year. 12. What can we know about Tianwen-1? A. It has been on the Mars orbit for seven months. B. It was named after a famous ancient Chinese poet. C. Its rover will work for three months upon landing. D. It will gather information about creatures on Mars. 13. Which of the following countries has already put a spacecraft on Mars? A. India. B. China. C. The UAE. D. The United States. 14. Which statement is true about China’s Mars exploration? A. China is the first country to send orbiter to Mars. B. China’s first attempt to reach Mars happened in 2012. C. China once did research on Mars’ environmental structure. D. China is the sixth country to reach Mars followed by the USA. 15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Is Mars Exploration Worth the Investment? B. China’s Tianwen-1 Closer to Landing on Mars C. Mars: the Final Front Line of Space Exploration D. Recent Theories Show Evidence of Life on Mars 第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 A lot of people think that they are not good at learning a new language. ____16____ Good language learners look for opportunities to hear and use the new language outside of the classroom on a daily basis and consequently learn the language more quickly. ____17____ For instance they can talk to salesmen, join sports clubs, or even talk to people in coffee stores. They might read newspapers and magazines in that language, watch movies, listen to podcasts, or join chat rooms. All of these are great opportunities to practice and can also be fun. After the talk, she always kept her head down in the school and hoped this school day would end soon. When she arrived at home, her mom was baking in the kitchen. 4. C. Increasing indoor activities. D. Stay away from modern technologies. 【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇议论文。文章就现代生活方式对儿童视力的影响,以及矫正儿童视力的解决方案展开讨论。 【8题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“How’ s your eyesight? A Is Mars Exploration Worth the Investment? B. China’s Tianwen-1 Closer to Landing on Mars C. Mars: the Final Front Line of Space Exploration D. Recent Theories Show Evidence of Life on Mars 【答案】12 C 13. D 14. C 15.
