A
(2024·临沂模拟) From Santa Barbara to Scotland, strangers are becoming friends by going on bike rides together. They get paired up by Cycling Without Age, an organization that helps seniors go for bike rides, even if they can't pedal themselves.
Hugh Lyon and David Lawrence, who are roughly 20 years apart in age, have been riding together for years. The 56-year-old Lawrence serves as a “pilot”, driving the trishaw — a bike with a passenger seat in the front that Cycling Without Age uses for their rides. They go for rides about once a week, often discussing the history of their town.
“Despite my deceased parents, it gives me a connection with people from an older generation,” said Lawrence, “and I enjoy spending time with them and hearing their stories.”
The pair have formed a friendship outside of cycling.Lawrence said he calls Lyon often and goes to the gym with him to help him with exercises he can't do on his own.
Ole Kassow, who founded Cycling Without Age, said that's the power of the program.“The truly powerful thing about these bike rides is that they tie people and stories together to create new relationships,” he told CBS News.“In my friendships — and the ability to form new relationships at any age — are what define a good life, and often also a long and happy life.”
John Boettner started the Santa Barbara chapter. He has one rule for passengers.“They say, ‘What does it cost if I'm going to go for a ride?’ I say, ‘Here's what it costs: You have to wave.If you don't wave, I'm going to kick you out,’” he joked. He said he likes when they hit red lights, because it gives them a chance to connect with people on the road.“Driving the trishaw is the best advertisement for Cycling Without Age”, Boettner said, “When you take a 101-year-old woman for a bike ride and she holds your hand tight and says thank you and gives you a kiss on the cheek, it doesn't get any better than that.”

Having hundreds of friends online is no substitute for a handful of close friends in real life.Researchers discovered that people with only a few friends were at least as happy as those with far more if many of theirs were online. The number of “peripheral others” someone connected with online — former classmates and co-workers, for example — had no connection with how satisfied they felt.
Scientists did their study using data from two online surveys conducted on 1,496 people by a non-profit research organization.People taking part in the study revealed their ages, the make-up of their social networks, how often they had different types of social interactions and their own feelings of well-being.They included details of how often and how they interacted with family or neighbors, and whether they included people who provided services for them in their networks. The number of close friends someone had was the only thing that influenced how satisfied they were with their social life.
“Loneliness has less to do with the number of friends you have, but more to do with how you feel about your friends,” said Dr Bruine, an expert of the study.“If you feel lonely, it may be more helpful to make a positive connection with a friend than to try and seek out new people to meet.”
In the study, they found older people tended to have smaller social networks.Younger people's were larger but they were mostly made up of “peripheral others” — not true friends, just people they knew — and did not contribute to their happiness.
Even variations in the number of family members or neighbors somebody spent time with did not affect how happy they were with their social life.Dr Bruine said her research echoed other findings showing people would be happier if a larger proportion of their online friends were actually their friends in reality.
She added,“Stereotypes of aging tend to paint older adults in many cultures as sad and lonely. But the research shows that older adults' smaller networks didn't weaken social satisfaction and well-being.In fact, older adults tend to report better well-being than younger adults.”
5.What has a good influence on one's happiness according to the study?
A.Having impersonal networks of friends.
B.Meeting close friends face to face.
C.Helping familiar co-workers.
D.Keeping in touch with family members online.
6.What did the 1,496 people taking part in the study have to do?
A.Keep off using the Internet.
B.Show their attitudes to happiness.
C.Reveal their social life thoroughly.
D.Find “peripheral others” from their friends.
7.Who is more likely to be attacked by loneliness according to the study?
A.Parents living with their children.
B.Older adults with fewer friends online.
C.Those having fewer relatives or neighbors.
D.Young people without friends in reality.
8.What does the underlined word “paint” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Treat.
B.Draw.
C.Describe.
D.Criticize.
describe ...as ... 描述为……”。
Last week I was in the supermarket.I got to the front of the queue and put my groceries through the checkout. When it was time to pay, I realized that I left my bank card at home, and I didn't have enough money with me.All I had was a ten-dollar bill and some coins in my wallet.I was short by at least five dollars, but I needed to buy most of the items.
I started to apologize to the checkout assistant.“I'm sorry,” I said. “Can I put these things back? And then I think I'll just take these.Oh no, I need that.Rather put this through.”
A lady was standing behind me, next in the queue.“Excuse me, sir,” she said.
“Oh, I'm so sorry,” I replied.“I am holding you up.”
“Of course not.I know how you feel. This happens to all of us at some point. Now let me just use my card to pay the balance for you and you can be on your way.”
I was surprised by her kindness, embarrassed though. No matter how much I insisted otherwise, she was determined to help me.Afterwards, I thanked her and asked for her telephone number to get in touch and pay her back.
“No,” she said.“I'd rather you paid it forward.”
“Pay it forward” means to do a good deed for the next person in need.In the Italian city of Naples, for example, there is a long tradition of paying for a coffee for another person. There, wealthier people pay a “caffè sospeso” (suspended coffee) for others, which is then given by the waiter to the next person who cannot afford a cup of coffee. Also, someone who experiences good luck buys two cups but only receives one.The other goes to another person who needs it.This, according to Benjamin Franklin, is “a trick of mine for doing a deal of good with a little money”.
The next day, I saw two firefighters eating at the restaurant where I worked as a waiter. They seemed to have just finished a tough job because they both looked very exhausted and hungry.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
I recalled the lady's words.
A few days later, I got a surprise.
I recalled the lady's words. And I thought it was time to pay her kindness forward, by buying the two men a meal and two cups of coffee to thank them for all that they had done.So I paid for the bill and wrote down my best wishes as well as “pay it forward” on the back of the bill. The firefighters were confused at first, but upon listening to me explaining everything, they accepted my offer pleasantly.
A few days later, I got a surprise. One of the firefighters posted the picture of the bill and the message from me online, with a comment that explained his experience in the restaurant where I worked and encouraged his friends to do what I had done.Over the next few days, I noticed many people sharing their stories in the comment section about how they “pay it forward”.While viewing those heartfelt comments, I realized that the good deed was paid forward!
