This kind of food that makes us feel good is different from person to person. It depends on your palate (味觉) and the connection you have with certain tastes and smells. The most popular comfort food is probably the biscuit. It’s thought that the sugary snack often brings back happy memories of childhood and family.
Moving on from sweet and sugary snacks, famous cook and food writer Mary Berry thinks it becomes natural to think about comfort food as soon as the weather gets colder and the nights become darker. And she suggests soup and warming foods as feel-good winter treats.
For comforting dishes like noodles or pizza, many people like them also because they don’t require cooking skills in the kitchen. They are easy to make so we can get them quickly. However, we often eat too much. Even though we know they’re high in sugar or salt, we continue to pig out (大吃大喝). “By making us eat that food, our minds find a way to get a really good feeling. However, we often feel guilty (内疚的) because we don’t realize that,” said Psychologist Shira Gabriel.

(2024·黑龙江哈尔滨·三模)For convenience, plenty of people prefer having a takeaway to cooking at home. Now there is an app through which people can enjoy delicious and cheap takeaway food.
Too Good To Go, an app being used in the UK, allows users to order leftover (剩余的) food at a low price from restaurants. The purpose is to cut down on food waste, as lots of restaurants usually throw away the food that can still be eaten at the end of the day.
Users just need to pick a restaurant and pay through the app. Then they pick up their food at planned times usually around closing time or after peak mealtimes (高峰用餐时间).
“Food waste is one of the biggest problems we have in this world,” one creator of the app said. “The restaurant industry is wasting about 600,000 tons of food each year.” By the end of August, Too Good To Go had helped save about 600 meals in the UK.
Users also have the choice to give meals to people who are in need by donating one British pound or more through the app. By the end of August, more than 1,100 meals had been donated.

(2024·浙江温州·三模)Perhaps, it’s more French than the Eiffel Tower. It’s carried home by millions each day. It is the baguette, which has been the biggest food symbol of France for a long time. Data shows the French eat about 320 baguettes every second and more than 6 billion baguettes are sold every year in France. At the same time, only 550 million hamburgers are sold in France each year.
It wasn’t until 1920 that the baguette got its name but its history goes back much further. The long, thin bread was firstly made in the mid-18th century. In 1893, steam oven was introduced to Paris, which made the bread more delicious. In the 1920s, a law stopped bakers (烘焙师) working before 4 am. To prepare the breakfast in time, the baguette became their only choice. Thus, in the 1930s, it became popular across France. Today, it remains an important part of French culture.
Unluckily, the baguette has been facing great challenges these years. With more supermarkets appearing, France has lost 400 traditional bakeries (面包房) every year since 1970. What’s worse, the war between Russia and Ukraine has increased the price of flour — one of the four ingredients (原料) to make the baguette. The price of the baguette is doubled as well. Many people aren’t willing to pay that much. Besides, some bakers can’t afford to turn on their ovens because of the increasing energy prices.
To protect this food culture, UNESCO put the baguette to its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage (非物质文化遗产) not long ago. Will it bring a bright future to the baguette? “This news won’t help us survive the winter,” said Pascale Giuseppi, the owner of a bakery, “I still have bigger bills to pay. I’d better turn off my oven for good.”

23.What’s Pascale Guiseppi’s attitude towards his future baguette business?

English playwright Arthur Wing Pinero said, “Where there’s tea, there’s hope.” Similarly, a Chinese saying goes that “Firewood, rice, cooking oil, salt, sauce, vinegar and tea are the seven necessary things to begin a day.”
Tea is, without doubt, welcomed all over the world. Tea production around the world increases year by year. It has become the most popular drink in the world—after water, of course. In order to celebrate the popular drink, the United Nations General Assembly (联合国大会) has made May 21st as International Tea Day. According to the UN, tea is much more than just a hot drink. It’s a big part of many cultures around the world.
You probably know that people in China use top-grade tea to show respect when receiving important guests. The British tradition of afternoon tea is an important part of that country’s culture. Making pulled tea has become a kind of art form in Malaysia. Mint (薄荷) tea is served when getting together in Morocco.

The health benefits of tea are still being discovered today: Preventing heart illness and cancer has been connected with drinking green tea. It’s believed that the mania for healthy tea products will continue into the next ten years. People, especially women, are crazy about wonderful tea products such as moisturizers (润肤霜) and other beauty products.

(2024·浙江金华·三模)Like many ABCs (American-born Chinese) and young Chinese immigrants (移民), sisters Sarah and Kaitlin Leung took great interest in Chinese food after they’d grown up, but found it really hard to learn how to prepare it. There was such a “gap”, as Sarah puts it, compared with western recipes (菜谱) presented on TVs or Blogs.
As it turns out, though, the Leungs have right positions to do something about this. Bill, the father, had spent years cooking beef at his family’s Chinese American restaurant. Judy, the mom, was born and raised in Shanghai and had deep knowledge about traditional Shanghainese cooking. Meanwhile, the two sisters had grown up in the New Jersey country, eating their parents’ food, but also growing in American food culture.
So, in 2013, the Leungs started a blog called The Woks of Life. Different from other food blogs, it’s intergenerational heritage (代际传承) cooking culture—The four family members took turns posting recipes, each sharing their own favorites with their area of expert knowledge.
Kaitlin says that The Woks of Life follows along line of pioneers—like Joyce Chen, Martin Yan and Ming Tsai, who first started to bring Chinese home cooking into the US and got more attention. “We feel excited we’ve made a meaningful mask over these years, explaining that there is a huge need for these recipes in the US,” she says, “it’s about the gap, yes, but there’s also a huge need. (2024·河南洛阳·二模)In a US study that studied the health information of 50,000 people over seven years, researchers found that those who made breakfast the largest meal of the day were more likely to have a lower body mass index (BMI,体重指数) than those who ate a large lunch or dinner.
However, studies have shown that giving up dinner increases the risk of physical illness, according to Courtney Peterson, the study’s author at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
“For those who eat dinner later, their risk of obesity (肥胖) and diabetes (糖尿病) goes through the roof. While it seems breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it might actually be dinner,” she says. “Our blood sugar control is best early in the day. When we eat dinner late, that’s when we’re weak because our blood sugar is the worst.”
Researchers designed a study in which 52 women took part in a 12-week weight loss programme. All had the same number of calories (卡路里) over the day, but half had breakfast, while the other half did not. What they found was that it wasn’t breakfast itself that caused the people who joined this study to lose weight: it was changing their normal routine.
When you have been eating less and less, and the blood sugar in your body drops, your body will produce something named “cortisol (皮质醇)” that specifically has a great influence on blood sugar. But it can also create stress in the body, making you feel sad and nervous.

Besides its cultural importance, tea is also a medicine, used from ancient times to modern days. “Tea is cold and lowers the fire,” Chinese Ming Dynasty herbalist Li Shizhen once said.

Asian Americans look to reconnect with the food of their heritage.”

Within a year, she lost fifty kilos by exercising. She finally became someone she wanted to be. Without doubt, exercise brings people a lot.
Exercise helps build muscles (肌肉). Muscle practice like doing push-ups (俯卧撑) is becoming popular in middle schools. It’s a good way to develop muscles and help students grow taller and stronger. For adults, it can make muscles bigger, too.
Exercise helps keep the balance of energy in your body. Food gives your body energy in the form of calories (卡路里). Your body needs a certain number of calories every day just to keep you doing the basic things. But if the amount of energy is more than what you need, the result will be unexpected. For example, if you eat more and move less for the whole winter vacation, you will get more calories than your body needs. Calories will turn into fat. Then exercise can help you lose the fat you don’t need.
Exercise makes you feel delighted. It feels good to have a strong body that can allow you to do all the activities you enjoy—running, jumping, and playing with your friends. Exercise may also make you feel energetic. That’s why exercise is becoming more and more popular.

A.About 110 kilos. B.About 70 kilos.

A.Because it helps students grow up better.
B.Because it helps students lose weight quickly.
C.Because students like doing push-ups a lot.
D.Because it is a good way to make muscles bigger.
