My neighbor was the only one taking action. Quickly putting aside his miracle meal, my neighbour stood up and guided the elderly man to share his seat. Hardly had he seated himself when my neighbour tenderly put his jacket over the elderly man’s shoulders. He said with a smile, “Can you help out?”, passing the meal and placing the steaming cup of soup in his hands. The old man obviously was astonished, but he accepted it with gratitude. Seeing this, I was so ashamed of myself. At the moment, my head and heart stopped battling, determined to buy a meal for my neighbour.
I went to buy food from the food court, with tears welling up in my eyes. What my neighbour said exactly spoke my mind. Despite a sense of guilt in my heart, I felt it was my job to do the same. After a while, I came back with steaming soup and a sandwich. I approached my neighbour respectfully, “Can you help me out?” I asked. “Why not?” He responded jokingly. People around cast admiring look on me, which made me relieved. It wasn’t until that day that I truly understand the meaning of sharing. I left the subway station, feeling warmer, even if the bitter cold wind filled the air.

How long will it take you to read this article? On average, adults read about 240 words a minute, but I always take longer. I should probably feel embarrassed-but instead, I take joy in it.
I got the habit of reading for pleasure from my mum. Reading is what I do first thing in the morning and last thing at night. But it’s always taken me a long time. When I started reviewing books, I was averaging 20 pages an hour. I have improved to about 30 pages, but that’s still slow, according to some literary critics.
Book reviewers aren’t the only ones under pressure to read quickly. Pictures of “all the books I read this month” are all over social media. And reading has become a way of keeping up with the world. It is understandable that we try to make sense of events, but it can also fuel the idea that reading is a chore , which it absolutely is not.
Why would pleasure be equal to pace? My slow reading seems to be down to a combination of slower processing speeds, and “subvocalising” — sounding out words as I read them. But especially when it comes to the latter, I wouldn’t want to train myself to go faster. It was news to me that not everyone subvocalises, because one of my favourite things about reading is hearing the language in my mind. Without subvocalising, I wouldn’t have caught the music of those words.
Recently, I finished a book of poetry. For two years, I read the poems each morning in the four minutes it took my coffee to be ready. It was a wonderful reminder that reading is never about quantity and always about the quality of time you spend with a text.
So when you read, don’t stick a number on it ---- resolve to read for pleasure, not as a chore.
24.Why does the author like slow reading?
A.It wins her fame online. B.It is a delightful practice.
C.It comes from her mom. D.It helps her reach goals.
25.What do fast readers focus on?
A.Quantity. B.Quality. C.Content. D.Sound.
26.What do the underlined words “the latter” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Slower processing speeds.
B.Learning language.
C.Combining speeds and sounds.
D.Reading words out.
27.What would the author agree with?
A.Reading is a demanding task.
B.Pace equals reading pleasure.
C.Beauty of words needs tasting.
D.Poetry takes no effort to digest.

【2024届江苏省南通市高三下学期三模英语试题】
It has long been known that dogs can learn commands like “sit,” “stay,” or “fetch” and can respond to these words with learned behaviors, often with the help of a treat or two, but uncovering their understanding of nouns has proven more difficult.
To look into the mystery, Boros from Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary and her colleagues, inspired by studies investigating the comprehension of babies before they can speak, decided to mimic (模仿) these experiments with dogs.
They invited 18 dog owners to bring their pets to the lab along with five objects the animals knew well. These included balls, slippers, Frisbees, rubber toys, leads and other items. At the lab, the owners were instructed to say words for objects their dogs already knew. Then, the owners held up either the matching object or a different one while small metal discs harmlessly attached to the dogs’ heads measured brain activity in a process known as electroencephalography (EEG).
Using EEG, the researchers aimed to observe any variances in brain activity when the dog’s owner mentioned a specific object, such as a “ball”, but displayed a different item, like a stick, as opposed to when both the spoken word and the presented object matched. This was indeed the case, with the results being strongest when the object was very familiar to the dog. That’s similar to what researchers have seen in humans and is widely accepted as evidence that they understand the words.
Writing in Current Biology, the scientists say the results “provide the first neural evidence for object word knowledge in a non-human animal”.
But the true extent of the dogs’ comprehension is still unknown, even by the study’s authors, since the dogs were responding to their own toys and objects that the owners brought to the lab.
The researchers are now curious to know if this ability to understand referential language is specific to dogs or might be present in other mammals as well. Either way, they want to learn more about how this ability emerged and whether it depends on dogs’ unique experience of living with people.
28.Which aspect of dogs did Boros’s research focus on?
A.Their speed of learning actions. B.Their willingness to follow orders.
C.Their responses to training treats. D.Their capacity of understanding nouns.
29.What is paragraph 3 of the text mainly about?
A.The result of human-dog interactions. B.The process of Boros’s experiment.
C.The logic of pattern matching. D.The theory of EEG analysis.
30.The brain recording results showed a different pattern in the brain when ______.
A.pet owners showed more objects than usual
B.dogs had a larger vocabulary of object words
C.the experiment was conducted in a new environment
D.the spoken word and the presented object mismatched
31.What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A.Conclusions from the experiment. B.Insights into dogs’ experiences.
C.Expectations for future studies. D.Applications of the discovery.

A traditional Chinese medicine has been shown to be effective at reducing complications following a heart attack after a large-scale, clinical trial. The medicine, known as tongxinluo, is made of extracts derived from seven herbs and various animals. The compound, whose name means “to open the network of the heart,” has long been used as a traditional Chinese treatment for patients who have had heart attacks and/or strokes (中风).Based on promising results in cellular (细胞的) and animal models, the State Food and Drug Administration of China approved its use for the treatment of stroke and angina pectoris—a heart condition characterized by reoccurring chest pain-in 1996.
The latest study, which has been published in JAMA, represents one of the first times that a traditional Chinese medicine has been tested in a large-scale, Western-style clinical trial.
The authors of the study, who include researchers from several Chinese universities and hospitals, in collaboration with experts from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center-found that tongxinluo reduced the risk of heart attacks (known as myocardial infarctions), deaths and other major cardiovascular complications for at least a year after a first heart attack.
Matthew Saybolt, a cardiologist with the Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center who was not involved in the latest study, told Newsweek that he found the latest research “compelling” after reviewing the paper. “I am not aware of any other large, well-run trials like this studying traditional Chinese medicine. This is a rarely run type of study, and I congratulate the authors for their work and publication in such a prestigious medical journal,” Saybolt said. The study involved 3,777 patients at 124 clinical centers in China who had suffered the most severe form of heart attack-known as ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, or STEMI.
Saybolt said he also observed some weaknesses in the way the study was conducted, one of which was that the participants were entirely Chinese citizens and predominantly male. “Thus the findings may not be generalizable throughout the world or to women,” he said. “Furthermore, the patients were less frequently-compared to the United States, for example-treated with traditional proven medicine after their myocardial infarctions. Therefore, the effect of the Chinese medicine may have been enlarged, by the lack of patient exposure to proven therapies.
Further research will be needed to address these matters, and the benefits shown in this study would need to be copied in other populations before the treatment could get approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
32.Why did the Chinese authority approve the use of tongxinluo?
A.Because it is made of the essence from seven herbs and animals.
B.Because it has already been used in traditional Chinese medicine.
C.Because it has been published in Western-style journals and magazines.
D.Because it has had effective results in treating patients with heart attacks and strokes.
33.What was the limitation of the study?
A.The authors have only worked with one university.
B.The research subjects are mainly Chinese male.
C.The American patients used the unproved medicine.
D.The expert Matthew Saybolt did not participate in the study.
34.What is Saybolt’s attitude towards the study?
A.Objective. B.Optimistic.
C.Concerned. D.Doubtful.
35.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Improvements of the study. B.Weaknesses of the study.
C.Results of the study. D.Benefits of the study.

Ancient Chinese clothing was very lightweight. People tend to believe 61 ancient Chinese clothing was bulky and heavy. Although some garments (衣服) were indeed complicated and layered, many traditional clothes, especially 62 made of silk, were designed to be lightweight and comfortable.
Putting on hanfu with proper ceremony was important in ancient Chinese society, as it was a way 63 (distinguish) social roles. At that time, rules on how to wear, fold, and tie garments 64 (follow) carefully to project an image of grace, modesty, and respect. Today, some of the flowers of the hanfu revival movement adopt 65 same principles.

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
While walking along the street, the bitter cold of a December day in Barrow was ruining my mood. The temperature was below zero so I rushed into the subway station, hoping to get warm.
Warmth came to my body as I settled onto a bench with a cup of hot coffee. Now I was ready to relax and do some serious people-watching. I noticed a homeless man seated nearby. The pleasant smell of delicious food from the subway food court(美食广场) was attracting me to consider an early dinner. From the longing look in my neighbor’s eyes, it was obvious that he, too, noticed the good smell. I wondered how long it had been since he had eaten anything, expecting he would approach me for some food. But he never did. My head and heart were battling it out: the former telling me to mind my own business, and the latter urging me to make an immediate trip to the food court for him.
While this inner debate was fierce, a well-dressed young couple suddenly approached. “Excuse me, sir,” began the husband. “We just finished eating and our appetite wasn’t as big as we thought. We hate to waste food. Can you help us out and put this to good use?” The kind stranger handed a large container with food. “Thank you.” came the grateful reply. Feeling good about what I had seen, but disappointed by my own lack of action, I observed my neighbor’s response to his sudden good fortune.
He lifted the soup, cupping his hands around the steaming bowl. It was obvious that he was going to enjoy this miracle meal. He opened mouth and suddenly, he stopped.
The reason for this unexpected behavior soon became clear. Entering the hall was a new arrival, in his seventies, without a hat and gloves. His lightweight jacket was a poor protection against cold. His face and hands were red and damaged. People around focused on him with pity and whispered at this sad sight.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My neighbor was the only one taking action.

【原文】
I’ve been living alone in London for a while now. Everybody here is very kind to me, but there are times when I feel homesick and get rather sad. It’s bound to happen when you live far from home. I sometimes get a little tired of cooking meals just for myself. Once a week I go to Soho. Soho is a part of London where there are all sorts of restaurants: French, Italian, Greek, Spanish, Indian, and Chinese. So, when I don’t want to cook, I will go to one of the restaurants in Soho and have a meal there. Sometimes I even treat myself to a bottle of wine. Wine isn’t cheap in London — at least not when you buy it at a restaurant. It isn’t something we drink every day.
British people do not talk as much as we do. They are more reserved. I’ve often traveled by train and noticed that people seldom chat with each other during the journey. They like to keep themselves to themselves. A British friend of mine, who can speak seven languages, is also quite a quiet person. But I’ve found one way to make him talk. He’s very interested in mountain climbing. If I ask him about climbing, he’s always ready to talk. When it comes to that subject, he suddenly opens up.

【2024届江苏省兴化中学高考综合演练英语试题】
【答案】24.B 25.A 26.D 27.C
根据第一段“On average, adults read about 240 words a minute, but I always take longer. I should probably feel embarrassed-but instead, I take joy in it.(成年人平均每分钟阅读240个单词,但我总是花更多的时间。我可能会感到尴尬,但我却乐在其中)”可推知,作者喜欢慢读是因为这是一种令人愉快的做法。故选B。
25.推理判断题。根据第三段“Pictures of “all the books I read this month” are all over social media.(社交媒体上到处都是“我这个月读过的所有书”的照片)”和倒数第二段“It was a wonderful reminder that reading is never about quantity and always about the quality of time you spend with a text.(这是一个很好的提醒,阅读不在于阅读的数量,而在于阅读时间的质量)”可推知,快速阅读者关注数量。故选A。
26.词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“My slow reading seems to be down to a combination of slower processing speeds, and “subvocalising” — sounding out words as I read them.(我的阅读速度慢似乎是由于处理速度较慢和“默读”——在阅读时读出单词)”和“But especially when it comes to the latter(但特别是当涉及到后者时)”可知,the latter指的是“在阅读时读出单词”,即Reading words out。故选D。
27.推理判断题。根据倒数第三段“It was news to me that not everyone subvocalises, because one of my favourite things about reading is hearing the language in my mind. Without subvocalising, I wouldn’t have caught the music of those words.(对我来说,并不是每个人都能默读,因为我最喜欢阅读的一件事就是在脑海中听到语言。如果没有默念,我就听不出这些话的音乐)”可推知,作者可能会同意的是语言之美需要品尝。故选C。

【答案】28.D 29.B 30.D 31.C
【导语】这是一篇说明文,文章主要介绍了一项研究狗对名词理解能力的实验。
28.细节理解题。根据文章第一段“but uncovering their understanding of nouns has proven more difficult. (但揭示它们对名词的理解却更加困难。)”以及第二段“To look into the mystery, Boros from Eötvös Lorán d University in Hungary and her colleagues, inspired by studies investigating the comprehension of babies before they can speak, decided to mimic(模仿) these experiments with dogs. (为了揭开这个谜团,匈牙利 Eötvös Lorán d 大学的 Boros 和她的同事们受到研究婴儿在会说话前的理解能力的启发,决定用狗来模拟这些实验。) ”可知,Boros的研究重点是狗理解名词的能力。故选D。
29.主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“They invited 18 dog owners to bring their pets to the lab along with five objects the animals knew well. These included balls, slippers, Frisbees, rubber toys, leads and other items. At the lab, the owners were instructed to say words for objects their dogs already knew. Then, the owners held up either the matching object or a different one while small metal disc s harmlessly attached to the dogs’ heads measured brain activity in a process known as electroencephalography (EEG). 30.细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Using EEG, the researchers aimed to observe any variances in brain activity when the dog’s owner mentioned a specific object, such as a “ball”, but displayed a different item, like a stick, as opposed to when both the spoken word and the presented object matched. This was indeed the case, with the results being strongest when the object was very familiar to the dog.(研究人员使用脑电图(EEG)的目的是观察当狗的主人提到一个特定的物体,比如“球”,但展示的是一个不同的物品,如棍棒,与说出的单词和展示的物体相匹配时相比,大脑活动的任何变化。结果确实如此,当物体对狗来说非常熟悉时,结果最为显著)”可知,当说出的单词和呈现的物体不匹配时,狗的大脑活动会有所不同。故选D。
31.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“The researchers are now curious to know if this ability to understand referential language is specific to dogs or might be present in other mammals as well. Either way, they want to learn more about how this ability emerged and whether it depends on dogs’ unique experience of living with people. (研究人员现在好奇的是,这种理解指涉语言的能力是狗特有的,还是也可能存在于其他哺乳动物中。无论哪种方式,他们都想更多地了解这种能力是如何出现的,以及它是否取决于狗与人类生活的独特经历) ”可知,研究人员希望了解这种能力是如何出现的,以及它是否取决于狗与人类生活的独特经历,这表明他们对未来的研究充满期待。故选C。

Developing a strong sense of self-respect can help you fulfil your potential, develop healthy relationships, and make everyone around you see you as a person who is worthy of respect. Take steps to know how to feel happy with who you are. 36
Treat yourself with respect
We often do things to ourselves that we would never dream of doing to someone we care about. For instance, when’s the last time you called a friend ugly, told them they weren’t good enough, or discouraged them from following their dreams? 37 . Don’t harm yourself, no matter how bad you feel. This kind of treatment is only bound to make you feel worse.
Take care of your body
When you make an effort to keep your body in good working order, you’ll not only feel better physically, but you’ll also feel a sense of pride. 38 . This doesn’t mean that going to the gym and looking amazing will automatically lead you to have high self-respect. But it does mean that if you don’t put any time or care into your appearance, that you’ll start to lose respect for who you are.
Improve yourself
39 . It means being able to accept the things that you cannot change about yourself, while working to address the things that you need to work on. Take some time to really think about yourself and to consider the areas you’d like to work on the most. Improving yourself can mean taking a yoga class, volunteering, spending more time learning lessons from the elders you care about, learning to see multiple perspectives about a situation. 40
A.Maintain a positive attitude
B.Make an effort to get fit and stay healthy.
C.The world will treat you as you deserve to be treated

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My neighbor was the only one taking action.

I went to buy food from the food court, with tears welling up in my eyes.

【答案】My neighbor was the only one taking action.
