A global gold rush is changing sport
A BRAWNY ARMADA of athletes from more than 200countries will sail down the Seine on July 26th,as part of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic games. From the Mongolian team in embroidered kaftans to the Canadians in Lululemon bomber-jackets, the procession is designed to symbolise the gathering of every corer of humanity. The message to audiences (and corporate sponsors) is clear: in a fractious, divided world, nothing unites people like sport.
The idea is inspiring-but, to a surprising extent, untrue. Though the quadrennial Olympics and the men' s football World Cup both have audiences that span the planet, most of the world' s most valuable sporting properties have stubbornly resisted globalisation.America' s National Football League (NFL), the biggest of the lot, makes 98% of its media-rights revenue at home.India' s cricket Premier League, whose media rights are worth more than those of the Olympics on an annualised basis, makes 96% of its money inside its host country. In European football, only England' s Premier League makes more money abroad than at home.
But now, at last, globalisation is limbering up.Technology is transforming how sport is broadcast and how fans enjoy it, giving leagues of all kinds a shot at going global. This represents a big opportunity for businesses-billions of dollars await those that conquer foreign markets-and an even bigger one for audiences, as spectacles that already delight fans in one country start to thrill those in others. An influx of foreign sports will cause some to boo and hiss. Leagues and media companies should take no notice, and shoot at an open goal.
Sport' s failure as an export-and the scale of its potential-is best illustrated by a comparison with other entertainment industries. Since around the turn of the century,Hollywood has earned more than half of its box-office income abroad.American musical artists rely on foreign listeners for nearly a third of their streams and a big chunk of their concert-ticket sales (as Taylor Swift, who is touring Europe, can attest). In video games, meanwhile,Japanese consoles and Chinese apps have players hooked worldwide.
Two shifts are helping sport go global. The first is a supply-side revolution, as sports broadcasting belatedly moves from national broadcast and cable-television channels to global streaming platforms. Netflx, which got its worldwide audience glued to South Korean horror and French comedy, is now doing the same with sport. Its “Drive to Survive" documentary series introduced Americans to Formula 1 (imagine NASCAR with right turns). In December it will give many of its 270m subscribers their first taste of the NFL (think rugby with shoulder pads). Apple last year began streaming Major League Soccer (MLS) to more than 100countries. As distribution goes global, fans will have the chance to watch new sports.
The second revolution is on the demand side. The biggest obstacle to a sport' s foreign adoption is that, unlike other forms of entertainment, audiences want to watch their home team, rather than the best one. But fans' attachment to teams is slowly giving way to their devotion to individual athletes.Social media let the best players cultivate global personal followings, drawing in fans with no connection to their team, or even their sport. Star players have drawn worldwide fans to England' s Premier League. Lionel Messi has brought new audiences to MLS not only because of his six Golden Boot awards, but also his half a billion Instagram followers.Women' s basketball is booming thanks to Caitlin Clark,a player whose record-breaking performance has drawn fans who had never watched the game, let alone attended the University of lowa, where she started.
It helps that young fans, whose preferred medium is short-form video, are more likely than older ones to watch highlights and summary shows of the action across a league, rather than a single match featuring their favourite team.Sports betting, recently legalised in much of America and growing rapidly, is further encouraging league-wide consumption instead of a focus on a single teamn. As fandom becomes more promiscuous and less tribal,it is being decoupled from geography.
Who stands to win at this new game? Among media companies, the best-placed are those with the widest distribution.Leagues want reach above all, and are willing to accept less lucrative deals with streaming services that can put their games in front of audiences everywhere.Netflix,Amazon and the other global platforms have an advantage over incumbents (though Netflix' s recent comment that its NFL matches each cost the equivalent of a new movie was enough to make unsporty cinephiles weep).
Among sports organisations, the biggest leagues will benefit most from wider distribution, just as music streaming has funnelled listeners to megastars like Ms Swift. But streaming also fosters healthy “long tails” of niche content. Women' s sport, long neglected, makes up nearly half of ESPN' s streaming output. The sports most at risk are between the hits and the niches; an anaemic media-rights deal agreed on recently by France' s football Ligue 1 shows how competition squeezes average leagues. There are signs fans are cooling on the Olympics, with its emphasis on countries over famous individuals-some of whom, like Mr Messi, choose to skip it.
As they globalise, sports will face a complaint once directed at other entertainment industries: that unworthy foreign content is pushing out treasured local favourites.A century ago politicians worried that radio broadcasts were tempting listeners to tune into big-city bands rather than local troupes. More recently, European politicians have complained that American television is distracting viewers from local programming.
Expect to hear more of the same as fans root for faraway sporting celebrities rather than local stars-and prepare to ignore it. It is for fans to choose what sports to follow, just as they pick what music to listen to or which films to see. In sport, of all things, competition is what counts.Sporting organisations worried about losing fans in this new global game should heed the Olympic motto: time to get faster, higher, stronger.

12月,它将让许多270m订户第一次尝到NFL(想想带垫肩的橄榄球)。

China bag first gold medal of Paris Olympics in mixed air rifle shooting
The biggest threat to anybody’s medal hopes in shooting disciplines is not the exceptional talent of the Chinese. It is, instead, perspiration.China’s glory in the 10m mixed air rifle team event was as straightforward as one could anticipate for the world champions and pre-competition favourites, Huang Yuting and Sheng Lihao. Here was the rarest of things; a Chinese Olympic success apparently free from the whiff of controversy.
At 11.22am on Saturday, the first gold medal of the Games was sealed. One down, 328 to go. South Korea’s Keum Ji-hyeon and Park Ha-jun were nudged into the silver medal position despite a late rally.Sheng kisses his rifle before he shoots. Huang appears in some kind of trance before pulling the trigger. Handily, the pair are completely unmoved by external factors.
There are rather a few of them here on the outskirts of Châteauroux. This military base feels so far removed from the Champs-Élysées and Parisian stadiums. Which it is; the Eiffel Tower sits 250km away from where Huang delivered the crucial shot. The diaspora of the shooters. It felt bizarre the event organisers determined gold would first be awarded in this distant annex. A brass band played outside, the French sports minister took in the competition but there was precious little sense of occasion.
The venue itself is steamy, muggy, uncomfortable. While that can be handled by spectators, it is tricky for athletes who have to compete in ludicrous leather suits. No wonder so many of them walk uneasily. Perhaps this explains the muted celebrations of the Chinese team; cold shower beats gold medal.
“It is definitely a thing,” said Team GB’s Seonaid McIntosh. “This sounds kind of gross but once you are soaking, you don’t really feel it anymore. But it is hard when you have sweat running down your face.
“It is not completely normal for it to be this warm but it is also not outwith the bounds of possibility. It has happened before. It is hard when it is this hot. You have a headband on, take that off because it is too hot then you have sweat dripping into your eyes so you can’t see.” With a rifle in your hand, this feels problematic.
McIntosh and Mike Bargeron had failed to progress to the gold or bronze medal matches but there was no sense of excuse-making after finishing 26th out of 28 teams. Both were upbeat. “The 10m mixed was always going to be a warm-up for us,” said Bargeron. “It is not a speciality for either of us. We planned it out weeks ago. So it was nice to get the nerves out, feel the crowd, feel the atmosphere and the heat as well. It was really great.”
Germany earned their bronze medal meeting with Kazakhstan by one-tenth of a millimetre. Talk about tiny margins. With 16 points the target for victory, the Kazakhstan team of Alexandra Le and Islam Satpayev enjoyed a fast start but were hauled back by Germany’s Anna Janssen and Maximilian Ulbrich. With Le in particular excelling, Kazakhstan established another lead, this time 11-5. At 10.45am, Satpayev saw Kazakhstan across the line 17-5, for the first medal of the Games. It is their first in shooting since 1996.
In the big one, China raced into a 6-2 lead after four rounds. Sheng’s accuracy was exceptional. Two Chinese shots, each earning 10.6 values – the highest possible is 10.9 – in the ninth round was key. At this point, China were ahead 12-6. They needed 14 rounds to secure gold, 16-12. South Korea had threatened an upset by recovering valiantly from 14-8 to 14-12 behind.
“This medal is the culmination of a lot of practise,” said Haung, who is still only 17. “It also means a new start.”
Bargeron labelled Chinese ability in this sphere as “insane.” They also have shooting stars who can handle the distinct heat of French battle.

Perfect start leads to Olympic gold for China's Quan Hongchan
in women's platform diving finals
The saying goes, "it's not how you start, it's how you finish." But when you start a diving competition with perfect 10s from all seven judges on your first jump, a lead like that is hard for any competitor to catch.
China's Quan Hongchan made a massive statement with no splash on her first dive of Tuesday's women's 10m platform diving finals. The perfect forward 3 1/2 received a score for 90.0 points after accounting for degree of difficulty.
From there, it seemed that Quan's only competition was her own teammate, Chen Yuxi. The two tussled for gold and silver as the rest of the competitors battled for bronze.
Chen stayed within gold-medal distance of her teammate, but a final dive score of 92.4 gave Quan the gold by 4.9 points.
Tuesday’s biggest drama came in the rivalry between Quan and Chen, who won gold together in the synchronized platform finals in Paris last week.
Quan, just 17 years old, came to Paris as the defending Olympic gold medalist. In those Games, as a 14-year-old, she bested Chen, who finished second as a 15-year-old. Ever since, the two have gone back-and-forth for world championship gold. Chen won in 2022 and 2023, and Quan was back on top earlier this year.
Chen's first dive on Tuesday in Paris scored a not-so-minuscule 82.50.
The slight imperfections by Quan showed in her second and third dives. Chen's third jump — an armstand with three somersaults — scored 89.10, and she was just 1.6 points out of first with two dives remaining.
As the rest of the field tried to score higher than the 70s, Quan and Chen battled each other for who could get over than 90-point bar. Chen's fourth dive, a back 3 ½ somersaults, came oh-so-close, scoring 89.10. Quan responded with her own back 3 1/2, splashing less on her entry than her perfect first dive. She was rewarded with a 92.40 and went into the final dive with a five-point lead over her teammate.
On the final dive, Chen performed a back 2 ½ with 1 ½ twists, and scored 81.60, meaning Quan needed just 76 points for the win.
She did five points better. Doing the same dive, Quan received the same score as her teammate, and finished with a gold medal win by 4.9 points.
North Korea’s Kim Mi Rae won the battle for bronze with a final score of 372.10, 7.6 points better than fourth place finisher Caeli McKay, of Canada. It’s Kim’s second medal of these Olympics. She also won silver in the synchro platform.
China’s divers led throughout all three rounds of the platform competition. Tuesday’s competitors were the top 12 after Monday's semifinals.
Quan has made a huge splash on the diving world with her ability to enter the water from height with seemingly no splash at all. Coaches and fans were so in awe of her ability that they couldn’t describe it with words, so they created a new one. The Mandarin Chinese phrase is pronounced “shui hua xiao shi shu,” and translates to "water splash disappearance technique.”
She may enter the water with minimal splash, but at 17, Quan's ripple effect on the diving world is making waves. Tuesday was just the fifth time a woman has won back-to-back gold medals in the platform event. The teenager now leaves Paris a three-time Olympic gold medalist.
With the win, China is now 5-for-5 with golds in every Paris diving event. With three events remaining, they remain in play to be the first country to ever sweep all eight events at a single Olympics.

China's state media, netizens rally around Pan after claims 100m swim not 'humanly possible'
China's state media, athletes and netizens rallied to support Olympic swimming champion Pan Zhanle after critics including an Australian swim commentator said his world record swim in the 100 metres freestyle was not "humanly possible".
Pan smashed his own 100 metres freestyle world record, shaving 0.40 seconds off the previous mark he set at the World Championships in Doha in February, to humble rivals including Australia's Kyle Chalmers and Romania's David Popovici.
The 19-year old Pan finished in 46.60 seconds to take China's first swimming gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games. His win came after he "completed rigorous doping test programs prior to and during the games with zero positive results," the China Daily said on Friday.
Pan said he took 21 doping tests from May to July prior to the games. "I cooperated with all the testing procedures and stayed confident that I am competing fair and clean," he told the newspaper.
"I did a lot of aerobics and endurance training to strengthen my push and kick in the final split. We have also adopted a scientific underwater monitoring and analysing system to review our techniques and strokes, so that we can train better and more effectively."
Australian coach and commentator Brett Hawke posted on his Instagram that "It's not humanly possible to beat that field" and that the swim was "not real life. Not in that pool, against that field."
Hawke's comments were widely shared on China's Weibo platform with one user commenting: "It's so cool to see them incompetent, angry and breaking their defences."
"He is praising us, saying that position is impossible but sorry we did it," said another.
The Chinese swim team has been under intense scrutiny since revelations in April that 23 of the country's swimmers tested positive for a banned heart medication in 2021 but were allowed to compete at the Tokyo Olympics.

Zheng Qinwen rewards raucous Chinese support to grab gold in tense tennis final
First Chinese Olympic tennis champion since 2004
‘I feel like I had special energy and lots of support’
Zheng Qinwen became the first Chinese player to win an Olympic tennis singles gold medal when she held off Croatia’s Donna Vekic for a 6-2, 6-3 win in a tense final on Saturday.
The 21-year-old sixth seed was given raucous support by a sizeable Chinese contingent inside Roland Garros’s Court Philippe-Chatrier and responded with a composed performance.
Vekic, herself bidding to become Croatia’s first Olympic singles champion, battled hard to try to turn the match around but failed to capitalise on her opportunities.
Zheng was not at her sparkling best in the final but raised her game when required to land the biggest prize of her career.
Serving for the match at 5-3, Zheng reached match points as Vekic drove a backhand wide and finished it off with a well-placed forehand winner before falling on her back on the clay court with joy.
China’s only other gold medal in Olympic tennis came in 2004 when Li Ting and Sun Tiantian won the women’s doubles in Athens while the best previous singles performance was Li Na’s run to the semi-finals in 2008, although she missed out on a medal.
Zheng, runner-up at the Australian Open this year, now looks capable of scaling the same heights as Li who claimed two grand slam titles during her illustrious career.
“Nothing can describe my feelings right now,” Zheng told Eurosport on court before the medals ceremony. “It’s unreal, I was hoping to get a medal for China and I made it, I got the gold. I did everything I could.”
Her victory completed a memorable week for China on the Parisian clay after Wang Xinyu and Zhang Zhizhen won the silver medal in the mixed doubles the previous evening.
Zheng, who men’s finalist Novak Djokovic describes as his favourite female player, began the week in devastating fashion, beating former French Open runner-up Sara Errani 7-6, 6-0. She had to dig deep in long, three-set epics against Emma Navarro and Germany’s Angelique Kerber before stunning hot favourite Iga Swiatek to give herself a shot at gold.
The vastly experienced Vekic presented a formidable obstacle in the final but Zheng started the contest quickly to lead 3-0 and managed to stay in control by coming through some edgy games.
“I fought every single match, I feel like I had special energy and lots of support. My country will be proud and my family who I know will be screaming at home by the TV,” Zheng said.
Poland’s Swiatek finished with the bronze medal after beating Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-2, 6-1 .
Earlier, Matthew Ebden and John Peers won Australia’s second tennis gold medal in Olympic history when beating Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram, of the United States, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (1), 10-8 in a tight battle in the men’s doubles final.

Passage 1
The Economist— The Week’s Cover July 26, 2024】

【材料来源:The Guardian July 27, 2024】
