Blockbuster games: "Black Myth: Wukong" is a hit
Will China produce more?
[1] YOU ARE thrust into the heat of battle—a clash so violent it has “disturbed heaven and Earth” and “alarmed both demons and gods”. Playing as Sun Wukong, aka the Monkey King, you wield the jin gu bang (a fabled staff weighing eight tonnes) and face down Erlang, a three-eyed warrior-god. You must be wily, not to mention nimble: Erlang’s axe can cleave entire mountains in two. (And you thought your day job was stressful.)
[2] “Journey to the West” has been adapted many times: it is the most famous novel in Chinese literature and among the country’s most successful cultural exports. But “Black Myth: Wukong”, released on August 20th, is special. The video game is the first blockbuster release from a Chinese studio. In industry lingo, “Black Myth” is a “AAA” game—a label that denotes big budgets and high production values.
[3] China is a country of gamers. By 2027 there will be more than 700m players there, and the market will be worth $57bn—up from $45.5bn in 2022—according to Niko Partners, a market-research firm. Many Chinese have bemoaned their country’s inability to produce a video game as thrilling as “Grand Theft Auto” or “World of Warcraft” (which originated in Scotland and America respectively). They are hoping “Black Myth” marks the arrival of a new player in the AAA arena.
[4] Why has China been so late to log on? One reason is that the country has been focused on winning the mobile game war. China made four of the ten highest-grossing mobile games of 2023, including the top entry, “Honour of Kings”. Mobile games “monetise much faster”, explains one game producer in China, which counts against designers who want to spend time and money on something more expansive.
[5] Nor did it help that gamers did not have the right hardware. From 2000 to 2014 China banned imports of PlayStations and Xboxes, citing concerns for youngsters’ mental health. After the ban was lifted, Chinese studios lacked the expertise to make games for those consoles; it has taken a long time to catch up. China’s game technology is “backwards”, says a developer at a major Chinese gaming firm. “Black Myth” was made with a 3D graphics creation tool called Unreal Engine from an American company, Epic Games.
[6] Perhaps the biggest reason for the lag is that Chinese gamers are not in the habit of paying to play. Copyright protection is often scant and software piracy rampant. That has made making elaborate games financially unviable. China is richer now, but with the rise of mobile games—which are typically free-to-play and make their money from selling in-game benefits—the habit has stuck. Some Chinese netizens were nonplussed when the pricing for “Black Myth” was announced at 268 yuan ($38).
[7] GameScience, the maker of “Black Myth”, based in Hangzhou, is hoping to reboot that attitude. Feng Ji, its boss, abides by the motto “Move oneself first, then find alignment with the market.” GameScience studied the best titles and historical material to create a game world that would feel true to “Journey to the West”.
[8] The process took six years, but the determination has paid off. In the day after its launch, “Black Myth” enjoyed 2.2m concurrent players on Steam, a gaming platform—the second-highest figure of any game on record. Most of those players were from China, but it has proved popular abroad, too. In the week after its release, it has been the top-selling game on Steam in America, Germany and Japan. “Black Myth” has earned positive reviews on the platform from 96% of Chinese players and 93% of English-speaking ones.
[9] With “Black Myth” the Monkey King has reaffirmed his reign over Chinese content. The game has already been promoted as a source of nationalist pride. Xinhua says “Black Myth” has succeeded in “telling China’s story with world-class quality”. A spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, delighted at a positive news story about China, has argued the game’s approval overseas “reflects the appeal of Chinese culture”.
[10] Some analysts believe that China’s gaming industry will not give up its preference for mobile even if “Black Myth” becomes the stuff of legend. But others are more optimistic. The game’s success proves the viability of blockbuster games in China, they say, and encourages other developers to think big. GameScience has accrued the experience to make subsequent projects easier. Mr Feng asserts that “There will be more Chinese games that can vie with those overseas.” That will come as good news to those who like to monkey around on gaming consoles.

Black Myth: Wukong – the summer’s most exciting video game
When Chinese developer Game Science revealed its debut console game Black Myth: Wukong last year, it immediately caused a stir. Inspired by the great 16th-century Chinese novel, Journey to the West, the action-packed footage featured the titular mythological monkey Sun Wukong battling Buddhist-folklore demons and sword-wielding anthropomorphic foxes in lusciously rendered forests. Smartphone games are inordinately popular in China, but console game developers are still few and far between, and the excitement for Wukong in Game Science’s homeland reached fever pitch. Within 24 hours, the trailer racked up 2m views on YouTube and more than 10m on Chinese video sharing site Bilibili, much to its creators’ shock and delight. One excited fan even broke into the developer’s office, desperate for more info on the game.
After playing Wukong for an hour and half in a London hotel suite, watched nervously by several Game Science employees, I can confirm that – somewhat miraculously – this stunning Chinese mythological twist on Dark Souls delivers on that showy trailer, marrying fluid-feeling combat with reflex-testing difficulty and the expensive filmic sheen of something like God of War. As I sprint through Wukong’s dense jungle, ducking and dodging through its deadly array of flora and fauna, I come face to face with everything from gi-wearing toads to nightmarish, gigantic-headed infants. Unlike many of its brutally challenging, FromSoftware-inspired peers, the difficulty in Wukong feels expertly judged. My simian avatar met a grizzly end more times than I’d care to admit, but I persevered. Eventually I defeated enough foes to unlock new abilities. Soon I can perch atop my staff mid-attack, giving me an edge against its murderous mythological monsters. I can buzz around the forest as a stealthy cicada, summon flames with my glaive, and eventually topple a snarling, lorry-sized werewolf atop a crumbling temple.
“We are under great pressure,” reflects one of Game Science’s co-founders, who is introduced only as Ted (Game Science would not give his full name), via a translator. “This is the first time that we have worked on a PC and console game, and we are also a new studio, so we would really like to thank how tolerant the players and the market is towards us, their excitement encourages us. However, the thinking of Chinese people tends to be that we look at the risks – and therefore, when we are faced with such great encouragement, the best thing we can do is to try our best to satisfy the expectations of the players … and to communicate with players in a very honest way.”
I am, unfortunately, met with very little honest communication when I bring up a report from IGN, which related alleged sexist comments from multiple developers at Game Science, as well as those in leadership roles. I present Ted with the opportunity to address the claims of misogynistic posts, and whether he feels that they represent Game Science’s values. Instead, I am shut down with a hasty “no comment” from their UK PR representative, and then, after a long wait, given a longer statement of “no comment” via Ted’s translator. I am then told that Game Science’s US PR agency will follow up later with a prepared statement, only to be sent the following: “Game Science is focused on the demo at this time and will only answer questions related to gameplay.”
The same thing happened to an IGN reporter at a demo in LA last month. It is disappointing that Game Science is opting to invite journalists to speak to them and play the game, but refusing to answer their questions. Perhaps there is no reassurance to offer. A generous reading of the situation would be that this inexperienced studio is petrified of saying the wrong thing. Yet in failing to say anything at all, Game Science is also failing to distance itself (and its game) from the multiple crude, disparaging and misogynistic comments attributed to its employees and leadership.
Journey to The West, of course, is no stranger to the world of video games. From Ninja Theory’s 2010 Alex Garland-penned and Andy Serkis-starring Xbox 360 adaptation, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, to the late Akira Toriyama’s world-conquering Dragon Ball, its world of myth and monkeys lends itself perfectly to gaming. Black Myth: Wukong’s stunning visuals, cinematic beauty and refreshing sense of speed could well make it the best playable adaptation of the fable to date – but the unreserved excitement I would otherwise feel about it is being trampled by the elephant in the room.

A Chinese superhero
The Monkey King is one of China's most successful cultural exports
The Monkey King, like many iconic fictional heroes — Harry Potter, Batman, Little Orphan Annie — had an unhappy childhood. Sprung from a rock on a mythical mountain, he overcame early hardship to hone his fighting skills, learning to somersault clouds and to turn each hair on his body into a miniature version of his warrior self.
With his mix of mischief and might, he resembles the Hollywood pantheon's many superheroes. But the Monkey King is different: he is more than 400 years old and comes from China.
Released on Netflix on August 18th, a new animated version of "The Monkey King" is full of bust-ups and slapstick, as Monkey faces down 100 demons and tries to achieve immortality. The film is the latest in a long line of adaptations of "Journey to the West", the most famous novel in Chinese literature, published in 1592.
The novel is a fantastical retelling of a journey undertaken by a monk in the seventh century to find sacred Buddhist scriptures; the "West" in its title refers to India, where he travelled. But the ancient story has since conquered the world. It is a rare example of successful Chinese soft power, enduring the many ups and downs in relations between China and America.
In the past century the book has been adapted into more than 60 films, countless TV shows, children's books, video games, a theme park and Legotoys. In May an award-winning graphic novel, "American Born Chinese" by Gene Luen Yang, which incorporates the myth into a tale of teen angst at an American high school, was turned into a TV series by Disney.
Japan has been behind several successful adaptations, including "Dragon Ball", a manga version of the story that has sold millions of copies and was spun out into a gaming franchise, and "Monkey", a badly dubbed television show that became popular in Britain and Australia in the 1980s.
As in all good storytelling, from Shakespeareto Star Wars, the ultimate fight in this story is for the protagonist's soul. Monkey King's physical journey is overlaid with a mental one. (Spoiler alert: the rebellious hero finally finds peace.)
Each Monkey King retelling has served as a mirror on its times, reflecting the anxieties of its creators. Some interpretations have concentrated on the need for discipline to quell the inner voice. Others stress the democratising theme of a lowly being rising to great heights.

Black Myth: Wukong crafts a stunning dreamscape with Chinese scenery, featuring great mountains, ancient roads, pavilions among mountain s and water, deserts and ancient temples. Additionally, the game features traditional Chinese instruments such as the guzheng and guqin. Much of the music is composed using Chinese- style chord structures.
The game started in 2018 and was completed after six and a half years. Feng Ji, Game Science founder and CEO, said in a recent interview that the success of the game is committed to the script and artistic concepts which combine Chinese stories and classical cultural elements into the game.

Will China produce more?
[1] YOU ARE thrust into the heat of battle—a clash so violent it has “disturbed heaven and Earth” and “alarmed both demons and gods”. Playing as Sun Wukong, aka the Monkey King, you wield the jin gu bang (a fabled staff weighing eight tonnes) and face down Erlang, a three-eyed warrior-god. You must be wily, not to mention nimble: Erlang’s axe can cleave entire mountains in two. (And you thought your day job was stressful.)
[2] “Journey to the West” has been adapted many times: it is the most famous novel in Chinese literature and among the country’s most successful cultural exports. But “Black Myth: Wukong”, released on August 20th, is special. The video game is the first blockbuster release from a Chinese studio. In industry lingo, “Black Myth” is a “AAA” game—a label that denotes big budgets and high production values.
[3] China is a country of gamers. By 2027 there will be more than 700m players there, and the market will be worth $57bn—up from $45.5bn in 2022—according to Niko Partners, a market-research firm. Many Chinese have bemoaned their country’s inability to produce a video game as thrilling as “Grand Theft Auto” or “World of Warcraft” (which originated in Scotland and America respectively). They are hoping “Black Myth” marks the arrival of a new player in the AAA arena.
[4] Why has China been so late to log on? One reason is that the country has been focused on winning the mobile game war. China made four of the ten highest-grossing mobile games of 2023, including the top entry, “Honour of Kings”. Mobile games “monetise much faster”, explains one game producer in China, which counts against designers who want to spend time and money on something more expansive.
[5] Nor did it help that gamers did not have the right hardware. From 2000 to 2014 China banned imports of PlayStations and Xboxes, citing concerns for youngsters’ mental health. After the ban was lifted, Chinese studios lacked the expertise to make games for those consoles; it has taken a long time to catch up. China’s game technology is “backwards”, says a developer at a major Chinese gaming firm. “Black Myth” was made with a 3D graphics creation tool called Unreal Engine from an American company, Epic Games.
[6] Perhaps the biggest reason for the lag is that Chinese gamers are not in the habit of paying to play. Copyright protection is often scant and software piracy rampant. That has made making elaborate games financially unviable. China is richer now, but with the rise of mobile games—which are typically free-to-play and make their money from selling in-game benefits—the habit has stuck. Some Chinese netizens were nonplussed when the pricing for “Black Myth” was announced at 268 yuan ($38).
[7] GameScience, the maker of “Black Myth”, based in Hangzhou, is hoping to reboot that attitude. Feng Ji, its boss, abides by the motto “Move oneself first, then find alignment with the market.” GameScience studied the best titles and historical material to create a game world that would feel true to “Journey to the West”.
[8] The process took six years, but the determination has paid off. In the day after its launch, “Black Myth” enjoyed 2.2m concurrent players on Steam, a gaming platform—the second-highest figure of any game on record. Most of those players were from China, but it has proved popular abroad, too. In the week after its release, it has been the top-selling game on Steam in America, Germany and Japan. “Black Myth” has earned positive reviews on the platform from 96% of Chinese players and 93% of English-speaking ones.
[9] With “Black Myth” the Monkey King has reaffirmed his reign over Chinese content. The game has already been promoted as a source of nationalist pride. Xinhua says “Black Myth” has succeeded in “telling China’s story with world-class quality”. A spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, delighted at a positive news story about China, has argued the game’s approval overseas “reflects the appeal of Chinese culture”.
[10] Some analysts believe that China’s gaming industry will not give up its preference for mobile even if “Black Myth” becomes the stuff of legend. But others are more optimistic. The game’s success proves the viability of blockbuster games in China, they say, and encourages other developers to think big. GameScience has accrued the experience to make subsequent projects easier. Mr Feng asserts that “There will be more Chinese games that can vie with those overseas.” That will come as good news to those who like to monkey around on gaming consoles.

Black Myth: Wukong – the summer’s most exciting video game
When Chinese developer Game Science revealed its debut console game Black Myth: Wukong last year, it immediately caused a stir. Inspired by the great 16th-century Chinese novel, Journey to the West, the action-packed footage featured the titular mythological monkey Sun Wukong battling Buddhist-folklore demons and sword-wielding anthropomorphic foxes in lusciously rendered forests. Smartphone games are inordinately popular in China, but console game developers are still few and far between, and the excitement for Wukong in Game Science’s homeland reached fever pitch. Within 24 hours, the trailer racked up 2m views on YouTube and more than 10m on Chinese video sharing site Bilibili, much to its creators’ shock and delight. One excited fan even broke into the developer’s office, desperate for more info on the game.
After playing Wukong for an hour and half in a London hotel suite, watched nervously by several Game Science employees, I can confirm that – somewhat miraculously – this stunning Chinese mythological twist on Dark Souls delivers on that showy trailer, marrying fluid-feeling combat with reflex-testing difficulty and the expensive filmic sheen of something like God of War. As I sprint through Wukong’s dense jungle, ducking and dodging through its deadly array of flora and fauna, I come face to face with everything from gi-wearing toads to nightmarish, gigantic-headed infants. Unlike many of its brutally challenging, FromSoftware-inspired peers, the difficulty in Wukong feels expertly judged. My simian avatar met a grizzly end more times than I’d care to admit, but I persevered. Eventually I defeated enough foes to unlock new abilities. Soon I can perch atop my staff mid-attack, giving me an edge against its murderous mythological monsters. I can buzz around the forest as a stealthy cicada, summon flames with my glaive, and eventually topple a snarling, lorry-sized werewolf atop a crumbling temple.
“We are under great pressure,” reflects one of Game Science’s co-founders, who is introduced only as Ted (Game Science would not give his full name), via a translator. “This is the first time that we have worked on a PC and console game, and we are also a new studio, so we would really like to thank how tolerant the players and the market is towards us, their excitement encourages us. However, the thinking of Chinese people tends to be that we look at the risks – and therefore, when we are faced with such great encouragement, the best thing we can do is to try our best to satisfy the expectations of the players … and to communicate with players in a very honest way.”
I am, unfortunately, met with very little honest communication when I bring up a report from IGN, which related alleged sexist comments from multiple developers at Game Science, as well as those in leadership roles. I present Ted with the opportunity to address the claims of misogynistic posts, and whether he feels that they represent Game Science’s values. Instead, I am shut down with a hasty “no comment” from their UK PR representative, and then, after a long wait, given a longer statement of “no comment” via Ted’s translator. I am then told that Game Science’s US PR agency will follow up later with a prepared statement, only to be sent the following: “Game Science is focused on the demo at this time and will only answer questions related to gameplay.”
The same thing happened to an IGN reporter at a demo in LA last month. It is disappointing that Game Science is opting to invite journalists to speak to them and play the game, but refusing to answer their questions. Perhaps there is no reassurance to offer. Journey to The West, of course, is no stranger to the world of video games. From Ninja Theory’s 2010 Alex Garland-penned and Andy Serkis-starring Xbox 360 adaptation, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, to the late Akira Toriyama’s world-conquering Dragon Ball, its world of myth and monkeys lends itself perfectly to gaming. Black Myth: Wukong’s stunning visuals, cinematic beauty and refreshing sense of speed could well make it the best playable adaptation of the fable to date – but the unreserved excitement I would otherwise feel about it is being trampled by the elephant in the room.

The Monkey King is one of China's most successful cultural exports
The Monkey King, like many iconic fictional heroes — Harry Potter, Batman, Little Orphan Annie — had an unhappy childhood. Sprung from a rock on a mythical mountain, he overcame early hardship to hone his fighting skills, learning to somersault clouds and to turn each hair on his body into a miniature version of his warrior self.
With his mix of mischief and might, he resembles the Hollywood pantheon's many superheroes. But the Monkey King is different: he is more than 400 years old and comes from China.
Released on Netflix on August 18th, a new animated version of "The Monkey King" is full of bust-ups and slapstick, as Monkey faces down 100 demons and tries to achieve immortality. The film is the latest in a long line of adaptations of "Journey to the West", the most famous novel in Chinese literature, published in 1592.
The novel is a fantastical retelling of a journey undertaken by a monk in the seventh century to find sacred Buddhist scriptures; the "West" in its title refers to India, where he travelled. But the ancient story has since conquered the world. It is a rare example of successful Chinese soft power, enduring the many ups and downs in relations between China and America.
In the past century the book has been adapted into more than 60 films, countless TV shows, children's books, video games, a theme park and Legotoys. In May an award-winning graphic novel, "American Born Chinese" by Gene Luen Yang, which incorporates the myth into a tale of teen angst at an American high school, was turned into a TV series by Disney.
Japan has been behind several successful adaptations, including "Dragon Ball", a manga version of the story that has sold millions of copies and was spun out into a gaming franchise, and "Monkey", a badly dubbed television show that became popular in Britain and Australia in the 1980s.
As in all good storytelling, from Shakespeareto Star Wars, the ultimate fight in this story is for the protagonist's soul. Monkey King's physical journey is overlaid with a mental one. (Spoiler alert: the rebellious hero finally finds peace.)

The combat is also a 10 bag. Dodging(闪避) is your main way of evading damage, but some of the late-game bosses don’t really give you much 11 room. Besides, just attacking with an extendable staff, Wukong also lets you use magic spells in combat. They are incredibly useful in battle but use up your magic meter, forcing you to decide when is the best time to use them. “Immobilize”, 12 , freezes an enemy letting you smack it for a few seconds until its effect 13 . Finally, you can call on defeated spirits who can be equipped and called out mid-combat like Pokémon to assist you.
14 , I can see a 10/10 in this game somewhere, but multiple questionable-level design and game design choices unfortunately drag it down. Anyway, the combat offers you plenty of ways to experiment what works for you, but it also offers you enough difficulty keeping you on your toes and adapting to each new situation. While its world is not 15 to explore or to comprehend, Wukong’s rewards are worth it and make for a thrilling journey of discovery.
