Book 1 Unit 2 Let’s talk teens Extended reading Mama and her bank account Analysis of the teaching material: Mama and her bank Account is excerpted from Book 1 Unit2 Extended reading. What: The topic of this unit is about the teens. In reading part,we have read the strangers under the same roof and understood the conflicts between the teenagers and their parents, which need to be solved in a rational way. The extended part is served as a solution. The story of Mama’s account reveals the fact that: Mama’s love to their children is deep and unconditional. Therefore, when we teenagers have conflicts with our parent, remember that parent’s deep love was, is and will be there and then try to solve the conflicts in a reasonable way. To sum up, the extended part corresponds to the unit’s theme: man and himself, man and society in which mutual understanding is of great importance. Why: Through extended reading, teacher guides students to acquire and sort out specific information about mama’s deep love and then further understand life is not easy for parents but our parents try their best to love us, thus helping our students form correct attitudes towards parent-and-child conflicts. How: By reading between lines and beyond lines, students know the exact plot of the story---Mama told a white lie to help her children feel secure when facing poverty. Some discussion can be added to help students read for thinking , read for writing . Analysis of the students: K: After three years of middle school English learning, most students have acquired some skills in reading, speaking, listening, writing and viewing. The topic of mother is familiar to the students, thus laying a solid foundation for further study. W: Previously, most students can vaguely feel the love of their parents. However, they lack deep understanding about the burden of life of their parents. As a teenager, they don’t have ample life experience to talk about the topic deeply and it may be difficult for them to empathize with the author. Thereby it is important for the majority of students to do in-depth reading. L: They will understand the features of a short story, identify the plot outline and induce the theme, thus expressing their gratitude to their mother for her deep love.
