Soon after that, the whirlpool became less wild. Then the sky was clear, the wind calmer, and the moon was shining.
写法领悟:句中使用了一系列的词语描写了大自然不那么疯狂后的情景:the whirlpool became less wild, the sky was clear, the wind calmer, the moon was shining,这与前面大自然的疯狂形成了鲜明的对比。
With the wind and waves, we were going in the direction of the whirlpool. We were hopeless. Nothing could save us. I felt sick, as if I was falling from a mountain top in a dream.

We had no idea whether rescuers could reach us.
After another hour, we saw faint lights across the canyon.
We had no idea whether rescuers could reach us. We told each other not to panic as night set in. Christina found a tree which we used as a shelter from the rain. I tried to send more texts to Mae, but most of them bounced back because the signal was not steady. There was nothing we could do but wait. We'd been stuck for nearly four hours. Cold and tired, we gathered closer for warmth. Though hungry, we were the supper of mosquitoes.
After another hour, we saw faint lights across the canyon. We realized it must be the rescuers who were searching for us. My wet phone had begun to lose function, but the flashlight still worked. I turned it on and shone it at the canopy above as a signal. Shortly after, I heard the blades of a helicopter. In minutes, the trees were thrashing in the wind generated by the aircraft. A cable appeared through the canopy, and then a rescuer. We were saved.
