(2024·哈尔滨模拟)Brittany Starks is a single mother of two working multiple jobs in Tennessee. Her life has not been easy.In the past few years she has been homeless, suffered from severe depression, had to care for a sick child, and was almost killed in a car accident.
It was the accident, she says, that aroused in her a desire to spread kindness in all the ways she could. She became focused on taking every opportunity she had to help those in need.On August 4, Starks offered free hair-braiding (发辫) services to her community.“I thought I was only going to get five to seven kids but I had 35,” Starks said.
Her inbox was quickly flooded with requests for appointments and Starks found herself working every night for two weeks straight into the early hours of the morning.“I wanted to do something for the parents like me whose money is going to be feeding their children and making sure they have a roof over their head,”Starks said.“I wasn't expecting a big reaction.I thought I maybe get five kids or so, but I didn't realize how huge the need was for this.” And the requests keep rolling in with many parents willing to come from out of state.
So many requests that she has had to call in extra support. She's also launched a GoFundMe to help pay for the hairstyling supplies she was initially paying for herself.“I didn't want to make a GoFundMe but I had so many people asking me to make one so that they can donate,” she said.
Starks says once the back-to-school rush is over, she plans to keep up the effort once a month for children all over Nashville.“Doing this makes me happy,” she said. “The smiles on the children's faces are priceless. It brings me so much joy to know I made a difference in their life.”

(2024·泰安模拟)In the last two weeks, the only things that have been thrown by Esther Penarrubia have been a broken toy, an old T-shirt used to clean shoes, a balloon from a party and the backing from a sheet of stickers.Ms Penarrubia, who has a PhD in agricultural engineering, realized that her lifestyle was called “zero waste” after watching a TED talk in November 2015.
It was when Ms Penarrubia moved house that she decided to remove single-use plastic from her life to reduce her family's waste and thus changed her lifestyle.
Bulk (批量) buying, reusing old materials, searching second-hand shops and minimizing products which use plastic have been the key factor to her lifestyle, which sees her family send just one piece of rubbish to landfill every fortnight.Ms Penarrubia tries to remove all plastic products but if she does purchase any, like olive oil,
she will bulk buy in a five-litre bottle and will recycle when finished. This also applies to cleaning products.Glass jars and containers are repurposed after use and kitchen leftovers go in the compost (堆肥) bin.The family grow their own tomatoes, cabbages, broccoli and herbs at home and also have orange and apple trees, while she buys fresh fruit, vegetables and bread in bulk from local suppliers for the week.
Ms Penarrubia believes changing to a zero-waste lifestyle is easier and cheaper than perceived, but admits the challenging part in convincing others that it can be achievable. She said, “If you think and organize your buying habits, consume fewer things from better quality, choose reusable alternatives, buy everything you can in quantity from the second-hand market — then it's not more expensive and you can save money. ‘Zero waste’ culture doesn't only consist of the reduction of our waste, it involves a more conscious lifestyle and way of consumption.”

(2024·佛山模拟)Lungs nearly bursting, I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached for the end of the pool.
Earlier that week, I had turned in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified, I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide, those sorts of things. I was competent for more.
So a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was not completely helpless in a pool. Midway through, the manager administering the test remarked, “This looks really easy for you. Why aren't you applying to become a guard?”
“The thought hadn't crossed my mind.”
“Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is complete a certification class.” Inside I was unsure of myself, but his words inspired me — You never know what you are competent to do until you force yourself to do it. Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR (心肺复苏), and procedures for different land- and water-based emergencies.
Work started soon. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and attained seemed unnecessary.
Today appeared to be another uneventful (平静无事) day. However, shortly after the other guards signaled to the children to exit the pool, I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
“Something must have gone wrong with him,” I thought to myself.
Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck.
参考范文:
“Something must have gone wrong with him,” I thought to myself. As it turned out, with a closer look, I found the boy waving his hands and struggling in the water desperately. Without a second thought, I dived into the water, swimming towards the boy at full speed. By the time I reached him, he had nearly sunk to the bottom of the pool, his face pale and his head hanging down, which threw me into great concern and huge panic. I picked the boy up and headed to the poolside with all my strength, keeping his head above the water.
Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck. It came as a shock to me that he wasn't breathing. To make matters worse, I could hardly feel his heartbeat. Every second counted! Without the slightest hesitation I did first aid to him, giving him mouth-to-mouth breathing and doing CPR as I had been trained before. After what seemed a century, I suddenly felt his body moved, a stream of water bursting out of his mouth, and then came the sound of the boy coughing intensely. Seeing the boy come back to life, those surrounding us burst into cheers. Realizing that all my efforts eventually paid off, I breathed a sigh of relief, a smile lighting up my face.
