But the FDA has only approved it for use in treating epilepsy (癫痫) — a serious medical condition — in children. What is CBD, anyway? Can CBD help me lose weight? How much CBD do I need to take to help my condition? What do I look for when buying CBD? The Essential Guide to CBD will answer all of these questions and many more. Written in part by the experts at Project CBD, the book will separate fact from fiction. HOT TOPIC: CBD suddenly seems to be everywhere and is said to be able to help everything from sleeplessness to physical pain to heart problems. But misinformation is widespread, and there’s a need for an authoritative expert to cut through the confusion and describe what research has actually shown. TRUSTED AUTHOURITY: Readers trust Reader’s Digest to get the real facts and explain them in a brief and straightforward way. Here, Reader’s Digest has partnered with the editors of Project CBD, who have been tracking the research being done into CBD. PRACTICAL GUIDE: The book will not only explain what CBD can actually help with, but will tell you where to buy it legally, what to look for when you buy, and how much to take. REAL-PERSON STRORIES: The book will include first-person statements from real people who have tried CBD for different illnesses. 1. What can we learn from the HOT TOPIC part? A. CBD has limited medical use. B. CBD is applied in many fields. C. Many people are ignorant of CBD. D. Few people are cautious about CBD. 2. What is the feature of The Essential Guide to CBD? A. It enjoys high popularity worldwide. B. It includes real user experience. C. It covers the latest research on CBD. D. It’s written by experts at Project CBD. 3. Why does the author write this text? A. To introduce some knowledge of CBD. B. To explain different effects of CBD. C. To advertise a book concerning CBD. D. To clarify misinformation about CBD. C 2. B 3. 根据HOT TOPIC部分中的“But misinformation is widespread, and there’s a need for an authoritative expert to cut through the confusion and describe what research has actually shown.”(但错误信息广泛传播,需要一位权威专家来消除混淆,描述研究的真实结果。) 根据最后一段中“The book will include first-person statements from real people who have tried CBD for different illnesses.”(本书将收录那些尝试使用 CBD 治疗不同疾病的真实人物的第一人称陈述。)可知,The Essential Guide to CBD这本书提供了真实的用户体验,故选B。 通读全文,尤其是第二段中“The Essential Guide to CBD will answer all of these questions and many more. Written in part by the experts at Project CBD, the book will separate fact from fiction.”(《CBD基本指南》将解答所有这些问题,甚至更多。 C。 B Once I told someone I wanted to get a master’s degree of fine arts in creative writing and they told me it was the second-to-worst post-graduation plan they’d ever heard from a student. Arts degrees — especially fine arts degrees, which usually come in the form of music, studio art, creative writing and theater — have been, over the years, labeled useless. It’s true that for the most part, STEM degrees lead to higher paying jobs than liberal and fine arts degrees, and it’s understandable why young people care about a higher starting salary and financial security. Student loan debt is playing a role in the physical and mental stress of young people. And while STEM majors usually have starting salaries that are $20,000 higher than those of liberal arts majors, by the time people reach the age of 40, the salaries between those who majored in the liberal arts and those who majored in STEM are virtually the same. For example, women who major in STEM earned nearly 50% more than social science and history majors at ages 23-25, but only 10% more by ages 38-40, a New York Times analysis reported. So even in terms of salary, which doesn’t solely determine whether or not a degree is useful, liberal arts degrees aren’t all that far behind STEM. It seems too that since people nowadays are going to have to work longer, it’s more important than ever that we actually like and care about what we’re doing. Pursuing something enjoyable, or else a passion, is continuously found to be a key factor in maintaining healthy relationships, mental health, physical health and energy. In other words, not useless. Art is also a method of communication. It allows people from different backgrounds, from different walks of life to communicate with each other. In a world where borders and division seem to be all over the place, we need art more than ever. We need liberal arts majors. And more than anything, we need to be able to pursue what we love with confidence, and we need to not get caught up in the “usefulness” of what we love. And just because someone’s primary job isn’t in their field of study — a writer who teaches high school for example— doesn’t make the degree useless. It just means that their way of finding a stable income is different. The same goes for artists who have to work multiple jobs to support themselves. They might have to find other means of supporting themselves and their artistry. It might be copy editing or it might be tutoring. So I am going to graduate school, and I am going to graduate school for writing. I might be paying rent by way of overnight restaurant shifts — there’s so much I’m not sure of. But one thing I am sure of is this — I would rather be a writer working two jobs to pay my bills than be no writer at all. 4. A New York Times analysis report is mentioned in Paragraph 3 to ______. A. analyse the potential value of different majors B. put forward the opinion on majors by example C. prove the argument against arts degrees wrong D. demonstrate the link between majors and incomes 5. Why does the author think learning arts is useful? A. Following one’s dream of arts keeps one in good condition. B. Doing what one loves builds up one’s self-confidence in arts. C. Mastering arts improves one’s understanding of different jobs. D. Developing a love for arts helps one maintain passion for work. 6. The author thinks that doing multiple jobs is _______. A. unavoidable B. common C. traditional D. acceptable 7. What can we infer from the passage? A. Students learning arts are more concerned about the value of life. B. People tend to place income in the first place when choosing majors. C. The man who doesn’t love his work won’t stick with the job for long. D. Graduates can find a broader space of development in the field of arts. C 5. A 6. D 7. So even in terms of salary, which doesn’t solely determine whether or not a degree is useful, liberal arts degrees aren’t all that far behind STEM. Pursuing something enjoyable, or else a passion, is continuously found to be a key factor in maintaining healthy relationships, mental health, physical health and energy. In other words, not useless. 故选A。 The same goes for artists who have to work multiple jobs to support themselves. They might have to find other means of supporting themselves and their artistry. It might be copy editing or it might be tutoring. It’s true that for the most part, STEM degrees lead to higher paying jobs than liberal and fine arts degrees, and it’s understandable why young people care about a higher starting salary and financial security. B。 C I always told my children that they were smart all the time. Especially in the first years of their life, their rapid acquisition of skills and language felt nothing short of miraculous, even though it could not be more common. I have a particularly clear memory of watching my daughter figure out how to make a Magna-Tile house that would stand up on its own, and thinking, “You’re a tiny architectural genius. Mom is proud of you.” But some research recommends that we not tell our children they’re “smart” when they do impressive things. When I first heard it, I instinctively disagreed. But after doing in-depth research, I was persuaded. It all goes back to “growth mindset”, which holds the concept that you can change your abilities through effort and strategy. The alternative to a growth mindset is a “fixed mindset” — the idea that your abilities are inborn and can’t be changed. When we praise our children for being “smart” based on triumphs, like solving a problem or doing well on a test. we’re unconsciously encouraging them to believe that if they do poorly or make mistakes, they’re not smart. And it’s not just what we say about our children’s triumphs that matters — it’s how we tolerate their setbacks. A study led by Kyla Haimovits, PhD, shows if parents think that failure is shameful, their children are more likely to be derailed by mistakes. But it’s subtle. For example, Dr. Haimovitz explains, your children may be struggling with early math concepts and you may say something like “Not everyone needs to be good at numbers” as a way to comfort them. But what you’re really doing is implying that their math abilities are already set, and unchangeable. Whatever you say to your kids, it’s about getting them comfortable with failures, big and small. Here are some tips from Dr. Haimovitz. One way is to praise kids’ effort rather than their intelligence. As Dr. Haimovitz pointed out, if we praise a kid for a school project he finished in five minutes, he would know our praise is empty. Instead, we can ask him questions about how he did it, which can help us know how to praise future efforts. Also, we can talk about our mistakes. We don’t have to deny we have negative emotional reactions. But if we highlight our missteps and explain how we persevered, our children can learn to do the same. 8. What did the author tend to do in parenting? A. She tried to develop her kids’ intelligence. B. She always spared time to accompany her kids. C. She often gave encouragement and support to her kids. D. She taught her kids not to be afraid of making mistakes. 9. Why shouldn’t parents always praise children for their intelligence? A. Because it would make children unwilling to try harder. B. Because children would be impatient of hearing compliments. C. Because children would become overconfident after being praised. D. Because it would make children doubt themselves when they do wrong. 10. Which can best replace the underlined word “derailed” in paragraph 3? A. Trapped. B. Received. C. Seized. D. Alerted. 11. Which of the following does Dr. Haimovitz suggest parents do? A. Figure out a solution together with kids. B. Focus on kids’ process of completing a task. C. Get kids engaged in educational activities. D. Try to avoid expressing negative emotions. C 9. D 10. A 11. 根据第一段“I always told my children that they were smart all the time. Mom is proud of you.””(我总是告诉我的孩子们,他们很聪明。 根据第二段最后两句“When we praise our children for being “smart” based on triumphs, like solving a problem or doing well on a test. we’re unconsciously encouraging them to believe that if they do poorly or make mistakes, they’re not smart.”(当我们基于成功而称赞孩子“聪明”时,比如解决了一个问题或在考试中取得了好成绩。 根据第三段第二句“A study led by Kyla Haimovits, PhD, shows if parents think that failure is shameful, their children are more likely to be derailed by mistakes.”(凯拉·海莫维茨博士领导的一项研究表明,如果父母认为失败是可耻的,他们的孩子就更有可能被错误……。)并结合后文例子“For example, Dr. Haimovitz explains, your children may be struggling with early math concepts and you may say something like “Not everyone needs to be good at numbers” as a way to comfort them. But what you’re really doing is implying that their math abilities are already set, and unchangeable.”(例如,海莫维茨博士解释说,你的孩子可能对早期的数学概念感到困惑,你可能会说“不是每个人都需要擅长数字”这样的话来安慰他们。 故选A项。 根据最后一段前三句“One way is to praise kids’ effort rather than their intelligence. As Dr. Haimovitz pointed out, if we praise a kid for a school project he finished in five minutes, he would know our praise is empty. Instead, we can ask him questions about how he did it, which can help us know how to praise future efforts.”(一种方法是表扬孩子的努力,而不是他们的智力。 D An almost limitless supply of fresh water exists in the form of tiny drops above Earth’s oceans, yet remains undeveloped, researchers said. A new study from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is the first to suggest an investment in a new structure able to harvest oceanic water vapor(蒸气)as a solution to limited supplies of fresh water in various places around the world. Previous wastewater recycling, cloud seeding and desalination(海水脱盐)techniques have met with only limited success. Though built in some areas across the globe, desalination plants face environmental problems because the salt water and wastewater they create are full of heavy metal. “Eventually, we will need to find a way to increase the supply of fresh water as conservation and recycled water from existing sources, though vital, will not be enough to meet human needs. We think our method can do that better,” civil and environmental engineering professor Praveen Kumar said. The study assessed the possibility of a hypothetical (假定的)structure that can trap water vapor from above the ocean and transform it into fresh water. The researchers performed atmospheric and economic analyses of the placement of hypothetical offshore structures 210 meters in width and 100 meters in height. Through their analyses, the researchers concluded that this method is workable for many water-stressed regions worldwide. One forceful prediction of climate change is that dry regions will get drier, and wet areas will get wetter. The current regions experiencing water shortage will likely be even drier in the future, worsening the problem. However, the climate prediction shows that the oceanic vapor flow will increase over time, providing even more fresh water supplies. So, the idea will be workable under climate change. This provides a much needed and effective approach to adaptation to climate change. The fact that this suggested solution works like the natural water cycle is one of its elegant aspects. “The difference is that we can guide where the water vapor from the ocean goes,” professor Francina Dominguez said. 12. Where is the new technology designed to get fresh water from? A. The wastewater. B. The rainfall. C. The ocean. D. The air. 13. What is the function of paragraph 2? A. Adding background information. B. Stating effects of traditional methods. C. Introducing ways to get fresh water. D. Leading in a new topic for discussion. 14. How do the researchers get their findings? A. By analyzing an assumption. B. By studying causes and effects. C. By conducting laboratory tests. D. By referring to previous research. 15. Which can be a suitable title of the text? A. The Ocean: A Potential Source of Fresh Water B. Wastewater Recycling: A Method No Longer Practical C. Climate Change: A Continuous Threat to the Whole World D. Ocean Vapor Trapping Structure: A Solution to Water Shortage 【答案】12. D 13. A 14. A 15. 根据第一段中的“An almost limitless supply of fresh water exists in the form of tiny drops above Earth’s oceans, yet remains undeveloped(地球海洋上方以微小水滴的形式存在着几乎无限的淡水供应,但尚未得到开发。)”和“A new study from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is the first to suggest an investment in a new structure able to harvest oceanic water vapor(蒸气)as a solution to limited supplies of fresh water in various places around the world. 根据文章第二段内容“Previous wastewater recycling, cloud seeding and desalination(海水脱盐)techniques have met with only limited success. Though built in some areas across the globe, desalination plants face environmental problems because the salt water and wastewater they create are full of heavy metal.( 以前的废水回收、人工降雨和海水淡化技术只取得了有限的成功。虽然海水淡化厂建在世界各地的一些地区,但它们面临着环境问题,因为它们产生的盐水和废水充满了重金属。)”可知,以前的废水回收、云催化和海水脱盐技术只取得了有限的成功。尽管海水脱盐厂已在全球一些地区建立起来,但由于产生的盐水和废水中含有大量重金属,海水脱盐厂面临着环保问题。再结合第三段中提到的“we will need to find a way to increase the supply of fresh water...human needs(我们需要找到一种方法来增加淡水的供应,因为从现有资源中节约用水和循环水虽然至关重要,但仍不足以满足人类的需要。)” 故选A。 根据文章第四段“The study assessed the possibility of a hypothetical (假定的)structure that can trap water vapor from above the ocean and transform it into fresh water. The researchers performed atmospheric and economic analyses of the placement of hypothetical offshore structures 210 meters in width and 100 meters in height. Through their analyses, the researchers concluded that this method is workable for many water-stressed regions worldwide.( 该研究评估了一种假设结构的可能性,这种结构可以捕获海洋上方的水蒸气并将其转化为淡水。研究人员对假设的210米宽、100米高的海上结构进行了大气和经济分析。通过他们的分析,研究人员得出结论,这种方法对世界上许多缺水地区都是可行的。)”可知,研究人员是通过对一项假设进行分析得到他们的发现的。故选A。 A new study from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is the first to suggest an investment in a new structure able to harvest oceanic water vapor(蒸气)as a solution to limited supplies of fresh water in various places around the world.(伊利诺伊大学厄巴纳-香槟分校(University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign)的一项新研究首次建议投资一种能够收集海洋水蒸气的新结构,以解决世界各地淡水供应有限的问题。)” During New Year’s Eve, some people travel to Times Square for the official count down. ___16___ For my family, we preferred to spend a quiet evening at home, dully killing the time and trying to stay awake until midnight. This didn’t change until my friend gave me a gift years ago. It was a box of 365 cards - one for each day of the year The idea was to write on the cards daily as one would write in the journal. I decided to use the cards as a “family journal” with highlight s of each day. I didn’t have high hopes that I would keep up with this for a whole year. ___17___ I kept writing and finally successfully wrote something on every card on every day of 2012. On New Year’s Eve, my husband and sons were curious about what I had been writing all year. We decided we would start with the first card and read them all aloud together. We took turns reading a whole month’s worth of cards before passing the box to the next person. ___18___ Some cards would say something simple like, “we took a family walk after dinner tonight.” Others would say something important like, “___19___” As the cards were read, we would make comments like, “That was an amazing day.” After that evening, I continued writing on cards and on New Year’s Eve, we read them together. ___20___ It’s a wonderful way for us to think about the year that has passed and look forward to the new year that begins at midnight. Besides, it brings us fun, preventing us dully spending New Year’s Eve. Moreover, it gathers us together and strengthens our bond. A. This family tradition is significant to us. B. We had a terrible quarrel with each other. C. Unfortunately, I have never kept a journal. D. At midnight, we finished reading the 365 cards. E. Today, we celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary. F. Some have exciting gatherings with family and friends. G. But for some reason, I was highly motivated to fill up those cards. 16. F 17. G 18. D 19. E 20. As is shown in the chart, half of the high school students read paper books, which helps develop the habit of deep reading. About a third of high school students read on mobile phones, 10 percent read online on computers, and 10 percent read by listening to books. In my opinion, the best way of reading is paper books. Oliver was absorbed in his book in his bedroom when the suddenly heard Grandma Anges’s voice. “Oliver, dinner’s ready,” she said. “I haven’t finished reading my book!” Oliver opened the next page of his book in the light of the candle on his bedside table. He didn’t want to stop reading there. But he closed the book anyway and went downstairs for dinner. Oliver was a bookworm. He read books whenever he could. His family was small, and so was the cottage where he lived. Grandma Agnes and his little sister, Eve, made Oliver’s family. His parents passed away. That night, after everyone finished dinner, Oliver helped Agnes clean the table. Then, he returned to his book and dozed off while reading. The next day, on the bus, Oliver was reading his book again when he heard a noise and looked up. He saw an old woman who said she had forgotten to take money. However, the driver asked her to get down. “I have to see my daughter. She’s in the hospital!” “I’ll pay her fare, sir!” Oliver said. Oliver helped the old woman into the seat next to him and paid her fare. “Thank you very much, child,” she said. “You have a little kid’s sweet voice!” “I’m a big boy! I’m not a kid!” Oliver said proudly. “And my name is Oliver. What happened to your daughter?” “I’m Mary,” she introduced herself. “My daughter had an accident yesterday. Thank you for helping me today, Oliver.” “Not a problem, Mary,” Oliver said, though it was a problem for him. The money he spent on the old lady was originally saved to buy the next book in the series he was reading. But he couldn’t see Mary get into trouble. When he told her he loved books and how eager he was to get more books, she listened with the same patience as Agnes. Paragraph 1: That night, instead of talking about his books, Oliver spoke about Mary. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: The next afternoon, hardly had Oliver reached home after school when he heard a knock at the door. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】That night, instead of talking about his books, Oliver spoke about Mary. Hearing what Oliver had done for the woman, Agnes spoke highly of him and said she was so proud to have such a kind-hearted grandson. She also said she felt sorry for not being able to buy more books for Oliver. Oliver told his grandma that her love for him mattered more. Agnes promised she would try to get more books for Oliver, but as for Oliver, he exactly knew this was just a promise in terms of her financial conditions at present. The next afternoon, hardly had Oliver reached home after school when he heard a knock at the door. Opening the door, he saw a tall man standing on the doorstep. After confirming he was Oliver, the man went to his car and returned with a box full of books! Oliver was confused about the stranger’s behavior. Then, the man explained that Mary was his mother, from whom he learnt about Oliver’s story. He asked around the bus stop close to his house and got his address. So he was here with these books! Olive was quite grateful and determined to continue to pass on the kindness to others. 词汇激活行为类 ①买:buy/purchase ②重要:matter/counter ③确认:confirm/identify 情绪类 ①困惑的:confused/perplexed ②感激的:grateful/thankful 【点睛】高分句型1] Hearing what Oliver had done for the woman, Agnes spoke highly of him and said she was so proud to have such a kind-hearted grandson.(现在分词Hearing作状语和what引导的宾语从句以及省略引导词that的宾语从句作said的宾语) [高分句型2] Oliver told his grandma that her love for him mattered more. (由that引导的宾语从句) [高分句型3]Then, the man explained that Mary was his mother, from whom he learnt about Oliver’s story.(that引导的宾语从句和“介词+关系代词”from whom引导的非限定性定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2023年春季期湘桂黔高二年级名校大联考 英语 (考试时间:120分钟 满分:150分) 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? B Once I told someone I wanted to get a master’s degree of fine arts in creative writing and they told me it was the second-to-worst post-graduation plan they’d ever heard from a student. A. unavoidable B. common C. traditional D. acceptable 7 What can we infer from the passage? A. Students learning arts are more concerned about the value of life. B. People tend to place income in the first place when choosing majors. C. The man who doesn’t love his work won’t stick with the job for long. D Graduates can find a broader space of development in the field of arts. C I always told my children that they were smart all the time. D An almost limitless supply of fresh water exists in the form of tiny drops above Earth’s oceans, yet remains undeveloped, researchers said. A The Ocean: A Potential Source of Fresh Water B. Wastewater Recycling: A Method No Longer Practical C. Climate Change: A Continuous Threat to the Whole World D. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
