In China in 1976 an earthquake took 242,769lives. It is easy to understand that earthquakes are so terrifying. How do these terrible shakes of the ground come about? We must first know something about the earth itself. Many different layers(层) of rocks form the earth's crust(地壳). The layers of rocks are not flat(平坦的) and even(均匀的) like walls. Because of the great weight on them, these layers could fold(折叠) downward at weak places, and this finally leads to a break in the crust. When this break happens, the earth shakes. Sometimes these shakes are very small, and we cannot feel them. Some parts of the earth have more quakes than other places. This is usually true of mountainous countries. But people in flat areas can also feel the quakes, because the waves(波) could run often for thousands of miles from the centre of a quake. What we need to fear most is the after-effects(后效应) of a strong earthquake: fires, floods, landslides(滑坡) and even tsunamis(海啸). And diseases after earthquakes kill lives, too. Small earthquakes happen every day, but landslides do not happen very often. Most of us are lucky because earthquakes seldom happen in the places we live. But we must understand the need of being ready to help those unlucky ones. ( )1. The underlined word“terrifying”means“making people ”. A. surprised B. sad C. afraid D. nervous ( )2. This animal is the fennec fox(耳廓狐). Fenne c foxes have ears that are 5 to 6 inches long. That's big for an animal that weighs less than four pounds. Their ears help shed(去除) body heat. And, as you may have guessed, they also provide great hearing. It's also interesting to think about the hair of fennec foxes. Why would a fox that lives in the desert need a thick, fur coat? Actually, the desert isn't always warm. During the nighttime, a desert can be terribly cold! A fennec fox's fur keeps it warm during those desert nights. They also have long bushy tails that they use as a blanket. And the hair on their feet protects them from the hot sand in the daytime. Fenne c foxes live in small communities of dens(兽穴). They spend most of the day sleeping in their dens, out of the hot sun. Then, when night comes, they come out in search of food. In addition to their great hearing, fennecs also use their great sense of smell and big eyes to track down(追捕到)dinner. Like other foxes, fennecs are omnivorous(杂食性的). This means they eat both meat and plants. They like eating birds, eggs, insects, snails, fruits and leaves best. Fennec fox mothers have one to five babies at a time. The lifespan of a fennec fox is 10 to 12years. The cream colouration of fennec foxes help them blend into their desert habitat. Still, they have to watch out for predators(捕食性动物). These include caracals(a type of wild cat), jackals, eagle owls, hyenas and humans. Humans catch them for their fur and to sell as pets.
