Have you ever wanted to grow some vegetables at home by yourself? Spinach (菠菜) is a great choice. It grows easily throughout the year and it has many health benefits.
When should you plant spinach?
Spinach can survive (存活) temperatures as low as —7 degrees Celsius (摄氏度), but that’s not good for its growth. Spinach seeds sprout (发芽) best in soil temperatures between 7 and 24 degrees Celsius. Once the seeds have sprouted, the vegetable grows best in daytime temperatures between 15 and 27 degrees Celsius. Temperatures above 29 degrees Celsius can influence its taste, making it bitter.
Where should you grow spinach?
Pot size: A 15- to 20- centimeter- deep pot would be the best. Depending on your space, it can be as wide as you want.
Make sure your pot has a hole at the bottom.
Soil: For growing spinach in pots, use a mix rich in organic matter (有机物). Make sure it won’t get waterlogged (浸透水的) easily.
Spacing: Give each spinach plant seven centimeters of space. If you want to harvest (收获) large leaves, give each plant a little more space.
Position: If you are growing spinach in the fall and winter, keep the plants in a sunny place. Make sure they receive at least four hours of direct sunlight every day. For spring and summer planting, place your plants in a position that receives some shade (阴凉), especially in the afternoon.
How should you take care of your spinach?
Watering: Keep the soil moist (湿润的) but not wet. Waterlogging will lead to rot (腐烂). Avoid watering the leaves.
Fertilizing (施肥): To grow healthy spinach, you need to provide nitrogen (氮素). Use a slow- drop fertilizer. It will provide nitrogen and other nutrients (养分) slowly.
When can you harvest?
Spinach grows quickly. You can harvest when the plant has formed at least five healthy leaves (7~10 centimeters in length), usually within one month after it sprouts.

Asimov was born in 1920 in Russia. When he was three years old, he moved to New York City with his family. Making a go of life in America turned out to be more difficult than they had expected. Finally, Asimov’s father managed to buy a candy store. It turned out that this decision would have a big influence on Asimov’s future.
As a child, Asimov worked long hours in the store. Over time, he noticed that the sci-fi magazines kept drawing customers in. These magazines told stories about things like aliens (外星人). Asimov became interested in them. His father, however, thought that sci-fi magazines were trash. He told his son not to waste time reading about things that “do not exist and never will”.
The ban didn’t kill Asimov’s love of science fiction. He continued to read those magazines secretly. While they opened the door to a whole new world for the boy, the room where he learned useful things like the art of storytelling was a library of more serious books. In order to satisfy his desire to read, his father gave him a library card. The boy became a regular visitor to the local public library. As Asimov himself once wrote, “I got my real education in the public library. For a poor boy whose family could not afford to buy books, the library was like a door to wonder. I can never be thankful enough that I chose to walk into that library and make the most of it.”
Asimov sold his first sci-fi story when he was still in high school. As his writing kept improving, his stories became more and more popular. By the time he was 36, Asimov was widely considered to be a master of science fiction. He created the word “robotics” and invented the famous Three Laws of Robotics. It’s hard to believe that these great achievements all started from a love of “trashy” magazines in a candy store.
21. What can we know about Asimov’s childhood?
A. He lived in Russia for two years. B. His family left for Russia when he was young.
C. His family lived an interesting life in New York. D. He worked in the candy store for a long time.
22. What can we infer from the second paragraph?
A. The customers were curious about sci-fi magazines. B. Asimov was born with interests on sci-fi stories.
C. Asimov’s father liked reading sci-fi magazines. D. Asimov’s father thought science fiction was real.
23. What does the underlined part “whole new world” mean?
A. The new school life in New York. B. His new hobby of reading books.
C. The interesting science fiction stories. D. Different candies in the candy store.
24. Why could Asimov be master of science fiction?
A. The free time in his store. B. The card of the library.
C. His father’s support. D. His interests and efforts.
25. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Library Was a Door to Wonder B. Asimov, the Candy Store Kid

Every year almost all of the 330 million tennis balls made worldwide are thrown away. Lots of them end up in landfill, where they can take up to 400 years to decompose (分解). The International Tennis Federation (ITF) is trying to find out if tennis balls can be produced and used in a way that is kinder to the planet.
Tennis balls are made from an air- filled rubber core (橡胶芯). They are coated in glue and covered in felt (毛毡) which can’t be recycled. Although rubber can be recycled, the glue that holds the felt covering onto it is so strong that the two can’t be easily separated. The best quality tennis balls are used by the world’s top players. They are usually made from new materials— latex (胶乳). This is a milky sticky material collected from cuts made in rubber trees and mixed with chemicals.
Players don’t use tennis balls for very long before they are replaced. In big tennis games, the balls are hit so hard that they are changed after the first seven games, and then every nine games after that. This is to make sure the balls stay smooth and energetic.
The ITF has put together a team of scientists to try to find a way to design a fully recyclable tennis ball. They are also testing to see if tennis balls could be used for longer before being replaced.
Not all used tennis balls go to waste. The balls used at the Wimbledon championships are sold to the public. Some are given to wildlife charities, which use them as homes for harvest mice. Some are used as dog toys or to make a flooring material for tennis clubs and horse- riding centers.
26. How did the writer lead into his writing?

C The tennis ball would be changed after the first seven games.
D Players replace the balls to keep them stay in the best condition.
29. What does the ITF do to make the used tennis ball be friendlier to the planet?

C. They test to use the tennis balls more times.
D. They sell the balls to wildlife charities or horse- riding centers.

四、读写结合(共两节,满分25分)
第一节 任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,用英文填空或回答问题(请注意每小题的词数要求)。
You might imagine that the scariest sound in the African rainforest is the roar of a lion. However, a new study has found that wild mammals (哺乳动物) actually find the sound of human voices scarier than any noise made by a big cat.
The research was done by scientists in the Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa, which is home to around 1,600 lions. The team set up speakers and cameras near 21 watering holes around the park between June and August.
The park becomes very dry at that time of year, and this encourages animals to head for the waterholes because most other sources of fresh water have dried up. This makes waterholes a popular hunting spot for both lions and poachers. A poacher is a person who hunts animals illegally (非法地). Poachers often catch rhinos (犀牛) and elephants because they can sell their horns (角) or tusks for a lot of money.
During the experiment, the researchers played different sounds. These included lions snarling (咆哮) and growling, and humans speaking calmly in local languages. The animals at the waterhole included elephants, giraffes, rhinos and so on. The study found that animals were twice as likely to run away from a human voice than a lion sound. Animals also gave up the waterholes 40% faster when they heard human noises. The results suggest that animals living in the park have learned that being close to humans can be dangerous because they might be poachers. This could be a problem for national parks and areas that depend on making money from tourists coming to watch the animals, because visitors might scare the animals away.
However, the findings might be very useful for wildlife protection. Endangered animals, such as the southern white rhino (犀牛), could be protected by using recorded human voices—the sounds could keep them away from areas popular with poachers.

Fertilizing (施肥): To grow healthy spinach you need to provide nitrogen (氮素).
16. How many pieces of advice did the writer give us on growing spinach?
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
17. What temperature is the most suitable for growing spinach?
A. 7 to 24 degrees Celsius at night. B. 15 to 27 degrees Celsius at night.
C. 7 to 24 degrees Celsius during the daytime. D. 15 to 27 degrees Celsius during the daytime.
18. Which pot would be the best one for your spinach?
A. A 7- to 10- centimeter- deep pot without any holes in the bottom.
B. A 10- to 15- centimeter- deep pot with some holes in the bottom.
C. A 15- to 24- centimeter- deep pot without any holes in the bottom.
D. A 15- to 20- centimeter- deep pot with a hole in the bottom.
19. What’s the correct order of growing spinach?
①keep the soil moist and provide nutrients slowly

Some are given to wildlife charities which use them as homes for harvest mice. Some are used as dog toys or to make a flooring material for tennis clubs and horse- riding centers.
26. How did the writer lead into his writing?
A. By listing facts. B. Through imaging.
C. By showing examples. D. Through giving advice.
27. Which of the following material in a tennis ball can be used again?
A. Glue. B. Felt. C. Rubber. D. Latex.
28. What does Paragraph 3 mainly want to tell us?
A. The tennis balls are used for many times.
B. It is a waste if we replaced the tennis balls so often.
C. The tennis ball would be changed after the first seven games.
D. Players replace the balls to keep them stay in the best condition.
29. What does the ITF do to make the used tennis ball be friendlier to the planet?
A. They try to find new materials that could be recycled.
B. They make a team of scientists to find ways.
C They test to use the tennis balls more times.
D. They sell the balls to wildlife charities or horse- riding centers.
30. Where is the passage probably taken from?
A. A Sports Guide. B. Movie Review.
C. A Book Review. D. Green Environment.

Part of growing up is learning how to work things out for yourself. However, when you’re feeling upset, puzzled or lost, you don’t have to fight alone.
·___31___

Feeling down because you’re finding something difficult, or it’s taking a long time to make progress, can also make you feel like you can’t do it. ___32___ When you’re fighting with something but you tell yourself you should be able to do it on your own, asking for help will move you forward more quickly than trying on your own.

If you think asking for a helping hand is a sign of weakness, it makes it harder to turn to another person. An expert says asking for help can feel risky. “We may feel scared that it won’t be taken seriously or that it isn’t a big deal to the other person or even that they won’t know what to say.”
·___34___
Everyone finds things difficult sometimes. Experts believe asking for help is an act of bravery. “Letting someone in, trusting them with your story and asking them to listen to you and help you come up with ideas of how to deal with a problem takes great courage. When you ask for help, it takes the pressure off.” ___35___ By asking for help, you practise speaking up for yourself and saying what you need. It also shows you how someone else might feel when they’re fighting, which means you could be more able to offer a helping hand when someone needs it.
A. Asking for support is brave
B. When you might need help
C. There are other benefits too.
D. Asking for help isn’t always easy.

If life is a journey, then along the way there are milestones that help us measure the distance (距离) we have traveled on that journey. Some of these milestones have to do with how we age, while others are ___36___ by things we achieve, or are expected to achieve.
By the age of one, a child learns to walk; at the age of two, they can talk. And a person ___37___ as a fully- grown adult by the age of 21. These milestones are part of natural human growth. There ___38___ other milestones (里程碑), however, which have to do with what we are expected to achieve at certain points in our lives. For example, you are expected to ___39___ from school, to begin a career (职业), to marry and start a family at a certain age.
So people call these expectations “social time”. ___40___ a society needs to remain well-balanced, people have to follow the “timeline” for these milestones. However, on online platforms, young people of today are expressing their serious ___41___ about “social time”. They think they should be able to choose “when” they want to achieve them, or even “if” they want to achieve them. But those young people should remember that “social time” has to do ___42___ “real time”. For most people, as you get older, it becomes more difficult to complete your education or develop a ___43___ career. And, if you wait too long, you may find that “time” has passed you by and you are left to regret (后悔) the things you could have done when you were ___44___.
It is possible to move life’s milestones a little bit, but they have been placed there on our journey to give us ___45___ and to help us grow and build our lives. Without milestones, we would just hang around aimlessly.
四、读写结合(共两节,满分25分)
第一节 任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
