In late June 2018, the weather report said there would be heavy rain in western Japan, but no one was prepared for what would happen. By mid-July, large areas were flooded. Some areas received over 100 centimeters of rain. Cars and trucks floated (漂浮) down the streets. Whole buildings were washed away. At least 225 people died, and millions had to leave their homes.
The weather is changing. Over the last few years, heavy rains caused (导致) floods in many parts of the world. There were droughts (干旱) in Brazil and Australia. High temperatures in Europe killed thousands. There were more hurricanes (飓风) in America.
As more wild weather events happen, people are asking questions: What is happening with the weather? And why? Is this natural, or are we to blame (指责)?
The answer seems to be: a little of both. Wild weather is natural. But most scientists believe human activity makes the Earth warmer. The higher temperatures cause more water to enter the air. This causes heavier rain. Many scientists also believe global warming (全球变暖) makes more hurricanes and other storms stronger.
This means we will see more wild weather. “But we don’t have to just stand there and do nothing,” says scientist Michael Oppenheimer. He and other scientists say we need to stop the Earth from getting warmer. We also need to be prepared, to do things that will help save lives.

Floods, droughts (干旱), storms, hot days…extreme (极端的) weather is becoming more and more common all over the world.
This is caused by greenhouse gas emissions (温室气体排放) from human activities, reported China Daily.
This summer, big storms hit areas of Europe. At least 13 people died in Austria, France and Italy by Aug 19. In Portugal and Spain, huge wildfires have forced thousands to leave their homes.
In the US, more than 80 percent of the west is in drought, up from just 20 percent in 2021. Three-quarters of farmers in these areas have stopped growing food.
In China, the heat has hit the south since June. The duration (持续时间) of this year’s high temperatures will break the 62-day record in 2013, becoming the longest heat wave in 61 years.
Extreme weather events are not only killing people and destroying homes. They also drive more people into hunger. Millions in East Africa have little food to eat today, according to the World Health Organization. For four years, there wasn’t enough rain during its rainy seasons and the land was too dry to grow food.
Extreme weather has also made 218 of the known 375 infectious diseases (传染病) more serious, including malaria, cholera and anthrax, according to the journal Nature Climate Change. As viruses (病毒) try to adapt to (适应) higher temperatures, they become stronger and harder to kill.

California is burning! Wildfires have spread across the US state since Oct. 23, 2019 and smoke has filled its skies.
Take the Kincade Fire in northern California for example. It forced 200,000 people to leave their homes within one week. The state's largest power company cut power to about 206,000 homes in order to stop more fires from breaking out, CBS News reported.
California has seen many wildfires in recent years. Nine of the 10 biggest fires have happened since 2000, including five since 2010, according to The New York Times.
Why is this? California has the perfect wildfire conditions, Park Williams, a US climate expert (专家),told The New York Times. It has dry air and high temperatures from spring through late fall. At the same time, seasonal winds blow across the state every year, causing the wildfires to spread quickly and last for weeks.
Global (全球的) warming has also made the fires worse in recent years .It has dried out the state's trees and other plant life, causing them to burn more easily.
Humans have played a role as well. Burning campfires ,garbage debris (垃圾碎片), and cigarette butts (烟头) can easily cause wildfires.
Humans have caused 90 percent of California's wildfires, according to the US National Park Service.

What is global warming?
Global warming is the term used to describe the rising of the average temperature on Earth. It has to do with the whole climate of the Earth rather than the weather on any given day.
History of global temperatures
The Earth has gone through changes in temperature before. The Earth has even gone through several ice ages, when the temperature dropped greatly and a lot of the world was covered in ice glaciers (冰川). Each time the planet warmed up, the ice melted.
▲
Even small changes of the planet’s average temperature can have a large influence on the environment. Here are a few of the things that scientists think may happen as the temperature rises. Some of them are already happening:
Glaciers melting
Many glaciers are already melting and shrinking throughout the world. If the temperature increases, they will continue to melt.
Ocean levels will rise
As the glaciers melt, the ocean levels will rise. This could cause flooding in cities located near the coast.
Migration (迁徙) of animals
Animals will migrate to cooler places as their old homes get too warm. This could upset the food chain and put some kinds of animals in danger.
Bad weather
Some scientists think that warming will bring more powerful hurricanes as well as more droughts and flooding in different areas of the world.
Change in ecosystems
The tundra (冻原) in Europe, Asia and North America will become smaller, while deserts will continue to get larger.
17.Which of the following best describes global warming?
A.The high temperatures on Earth. B.The weather during the summer.
C.The increase in the average temperatures on Earth. D.The whole climate of the Earth.
18.What does the underlined word “shrinking” mean in Chinese?
A.收缩 B.骤变 C.膨胀 D.冰冻

20.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Animals will migrate to warmer places as their old homes get too warm.
B.As the glaciers melt, the ocean levels won’t rise.
C.Some scientists think that global warming will bring more flooding.
D.Because of the global warming, the tundra becomes bigger.
21.Which can be properly put in ▲ in the passage?
A.What causes global warming? B.Why is global warming a serious problem?
C.How does the temperature rise? D.What can we do about global warming?

A large number of tourists were going to Death Valley in the United States this week, hoping to experience the hottest day on the Earth. Death Valley is a national park in the state of California and is known for being the hottest and driest place on our planet. The desert already holds the record for the hottest day in history—56. 6 degrees Celsius (摄氏度) in July 1913. That’s super hot!
Some scientists now doubt whether the record is correct. It is one of many records from the early 1900s that have been questioned by the World Metcorological Organization (世界气象组织), which is considered as the keeper of world record temperatures.
Randy Cevermny, who works there says temperatures at or above 54. 44 degrees Celsius have only been recorded a few times, mostly in Death Valley where signs warn visitors not to walk after 10:00 a. m. At the weekend, scientists were tracking ( 追 踪 ) high clouds in the Death Valley area that could keep temperatures below the record mark. “The all-time record seems quite safe today(Sunday), ”said Matt Woods from the National Weather Service.
The desert heat comes at a time when the hot weather in the northern hemisphere (北半球) has put about one third of Americans under heat warnings, as well as terrible temperatures across European countries including Italy, Spain and Greece.
June in 2023 was the hottest June on record, according to some weather organizations. The climate change caused by human activities, such as the burning of carbon, oil and gas, will make the world hotter over the next 10 years. For us, living a green life has a long way to go.

Most of us know about fires, earthquakes, droughts and floods. But from time to time, Mother Nature surprises us, and brings a terrible weather event (事件).Here are some examples of unusual weather.
Strange rain: One day in 2005, people in a small town in Serbia looked out their windows and saw an unusual sight. It was raining frogs! Without any warning (提醒), they found the streets full of small animals jumping about. “There were thousands of them,” someone said. “I thought maybe a plane carrying frogs exploded (爆炸),” said another. Scientists believe the tornado passed over the lake, lifted the frogs into the air, and then dropped them in a remote Serbian town.
Tornadoes (strong windstorms moving in a circle) of Fire: Tornadoes don’t seem to be dangerous enough, but some of them can be made of fire. When a wildfire reaches very high temperatures, it causes the air to become hot and to rise. Cooler air rushes in to replace (替代) hot air. This causes strong winds. These winds suck away (吸走) burning plants and even the fire itself. When this happens, just as it did in Denver on March 14, 2014, a tornado of fire was produced. This tornado can be up to 15 meters wide and up to 40 stories high.
Great Balls of Ice: In 1942, hundreds of thousands of years skeletons (骨骼) were found under the ice of Lake Roopkund in the Himalayas. Many had holes in their skulls (头盖骨). But they weren’t hurt in any other way. Scientists thought the people must have been hit from above. But for years, they haven’t found out the cause of their deaths.
Today, scientists think these people were killed by giant hailstones—balls of ice. The blocks of ice grew bigger and bigger and turned into hail, until(直到) the wind couldn’t lift them and the hail fell to the ground, often at a speed (速度) of over 160 kilometres an hour. Unlucky people at Lake Roopkund had nowhere to run away, so they were all killed by the hailstones.
30.Which one is TRUE about the frogs raining down in Serbia?
A.They fell out of an airplane that exploded.
B.They grew in the clouds and then fell down to Earth.
C.A heavy rain brought the frogs from a town far away.
D.A tornado took them from a lake and dropped them over the town.
31.We can put the sentence “This makes them very dangerous.” at the end of ________.
A.Paragraph 1 B.Paragraph 2 C.Paragraph 3 D.Paragraph 4
32.What happens when little pieces of ice move around in the wind?
A.They become bigger. B.They become higher. C.They fall to the ground as snow. D.They become raindrops.
33.What can we know according to the passage?
A.People’s activities cause these three weather events. B.People in Serbia knew there might be a strange rain.
C.High temperatures cause hotter air to replace cool air. D.People at Lake Roopkund were killed by balls of ice from the sky.
34.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Unusual Weather B.Mother Nature
C.Humans VS Nature D.Unusual Tornadoes

Health problems which are connected to climate(气候) change are getting worse, say two recent reports.
The reports followed 44 health problems that are connected to climate change around the word. They include heat deaths, infectious diseases(传染病) and hunger. “All of them are getting worse,” said Marina Romanello. She is a research director of the Lancet Countdown project. “With global warming getting worse, doing nothing on climate and health will cost more than acting now,” one of the report says.
The reports are called “code red for a healthy future”. One report is centered on the US and the other is centered on the whole world. The reports found some dangerous facts. At-risk populations like older people and the very young are more easily infuenced by high temperatures. For people over 65, the researchers found they stayed longer in great heat than the average(平均的) from 1986 to 2005. Also, there are more people living in warm places where it is easier for some diseases to spread. For example, coast areas are warm enough for dangerous bacteria(细菌) to grow. In some poor nations, the season for disease-spreading mosquitoes(蚊子) has got longer since the 1950s.
The research also found that 72 percent of countries saw an increase in wild fires. And in 2020, up to 19 percent of the world’s land surface was influenced by extreme drought(极端干旱). In the US, the heat, fire and drought caused the biggest problems. The Pacific Northwest and Canada saw extreme heat waves last summer. An earlier study found that the heat waves would not have happened if there were no human-caused climate change.
35.What did the reports find according to Paragraph 3?
A.At-risk populations are more easily influenced by high temperatures.
B.Climate change doesn’t influence people who are under 65.
C.It’s easier for some diseases to spread in warm places.
D.In poor nations, the season for mosquitoes becomes longer.
36.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To show how to protect the environment.
B.To tell people to take action to keep healthy.
C.To let more people know the importance of health.
D.To ask people to pay attention to environment protection.
37.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.The results of climate change.
B.The reasons why climate changes.
C.Health problems connected to climate change.
D.Deaths caused by human-caused climate change.
38.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B.
C. D.

A. B.
C. D.
