People in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan use traditional characters. And on the Chinese mainland we write with simplified ones. However, at this year’s Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), well-known film director Feng Xiaogang suggested that schools should teach students 50-200 of the most meaningful traditional Chinese characters. “It is not to get rid of the simplified characters, but to let the children know about the most important part of traditional Chinese culture,” said Feng. Take two simplified characters as an example, “亲” (meaning dear, or relatives) and “爱” (meaning love). The traditional version for “亲” is “親”, which has an extra “見” meaning “see”; while “爱” is written as “愛” in the traditional way, which has an extra “心” meaning “heart”. “Love needs ‘heart’ and relatives need to ‘see’ each other,” Feng said. “The simplified versions of these characters have lost their human touch.” Learning traditional Chinese will also help people better understand Chinese historical works written in traditional characters, said Lu Bo, editor-in-chief of Macao Daily News. However, many people think it not necessary to do so. They say simplified characters are easier to learn and write, and people have got used to them. “Traditional Chinese characters are too hard for beginners, and students don’t have the language environment outside the classroom,” Zhang Jian, a Guangzhou primary school teacher, told the Yangcheng Evening News. Moreover, the simplified characters come from the traditional ones, which means they can also promote and keep traditional culture, said Chinese character expert Dang Huaixing. 根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。 5. As summer changes to autumn, the trees turn colors, changing from summer greens to shades of red, orange, and yellow. When I was a boy, my grandmother told me that a strange little man came at night with a paint brush to paint the leaves those wonderful colors. And I believed her for it was a wonderful way of explaining this change to a little boy. But as I grew older, my natural curiosity (好奇) led me to do some research on my own. As always, science had the answer. Trees need food, just like all lives. Leaves produce food for the tree. It’s just sugar, which is sometimes called glucose (葡萄糖). Leaves use sunlight to change water and CO2 into oxygen (氧气). The process is known as photo-synthesis (光合作用). A chemical called chlorophyll (叶绿素) helps make this happen. Chlorophyll is the reason why leaves are green in summer. However, Canadian winters are long, cold and dark. There isn’t enough sunshine in winter for the leaves to make food. In autumn, as the days shorten, the trees get a signal (信号) to slow down. It’s time to take a rest. Don’t worry, though. They have enough food prepared to last all winter. When the leaves stop making food, they no longer need to make chlorophyll. Slowly, the chlorophyll disappears. Remember, this is the chemical that makes leaves green. As the chlorophyll goes away, so does the green color. We begin to see the other colors that are always there. We could not see them before because green is a strong color. 根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。 9. Why do leaves become red, orange and yellow in autumn? A. Because the chlorophyll goes away in the leaves. B. Because green color has a chemical change with sunlight. C. Because the trees need more food in winter. 10. Which of the following shows the structure of this passage? (①= Paragraph 1) A. B. C. 11. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. We could not see the other colors before because they are not always there. B. The writer always believes his grandmother’s explanation. C. When the leaves no longer need to make chlorophyll, the trees can change from summer greens to shades of red, orange, and yellow. 12. Which is the best title for this passage? A. Supporters in cars, who carried food and water for the group, stayed with them together. One day, Smith walked alone and then he couldn’t find the rest of the group. Even worse, he could not find out which direction to go. Then a sandstorm covered the area. When the storm was over, Smith was even more worried. In the heat that he couldn’t stand, he quickly finished his water. He had to spend that night out in the open, and he almost felt he couldn’t survive (生存). The next day, he walked on. After the second night, he started to worry about dying. He realized that his friends might not find him in time. It was late on the third day that Smith lost his sense and fell over. When Smith awoke, he was in the car with his friends. He had been found by a group of Bedouin who were traveling in a truck. On my first night in Privas, I stayed with a host family. They told me that in most places in France, people give two. In the north of France, they give four kisses. And in Privas, the custom is to give three. This made me sometimes wonder which cheek to kiss first. Since I had long hair, when a person was kissing me, some of my hair would end up in his or her mouth. That was really funny and awkward (令人尴尬的). But people there were pleased that I was getting used to the local culture. Six months of staying there made me feel like part of the town. It was an unforgettable experience and I can’t wait to return there some day. 根据短文内容,回答下列问题。 41. The writer talks about the idea objectively. C Every year, as the summer days grow shorter, an amazing change happens in Canadian forests. A. How a strange man painted trees. B. What food trees need during a year. C. Why leaves change colors in autumn. D The Sahara Desert in Northern Africa is the largest hot desert in the world. Even worse, he could not find out which direction to go. Then a sandstorm covered the area. When the storm was over, Smith was even more worried.
