Beijing Opera is one of the traditional Chinese drama art forms and the largest Chinese opera form. Having a history of about 200 years, it is developed from many other drama forms, mostly from the local drama “Huiban”. It was very popular in south China during the 18th century. Theatrical (戏剧的) art forms in many other countries do not have singing, dancing and spoken parts together in one single drama. An opera singer, for example, neither dances nor speaks on stage; there are no singing or dancing parts in a modern play; in a dance drama, the dancer doesn’t speak or sing. Traditional Chinese drama, including Beijing Opera, is a kind of entertainment (娱乐). It includes spoken parts, singing and dancing.

Mei Lanfang, one of the most famous performers of all, was the first to introduce Beijing Opera to foreigners and made highly successful tours to foreign countries. “You will doubt and sometimes be a little bored, but you will be interested gradually. I was on a train in Switzerland. The train came to a stop and the conductor’s (乘务员的) voice over the loudspeaker delivered (传递) a message in German, Italian, and French. I’d made the mistake of not learning any of those languages before my vacation.
Everyone started getting off the train and an old woman saw that I was confused and stressed. She could speak some English and told me that an accident had happened on the tracks (轨道). She asked me where I was trying to get to, then went and talked to some workers, and came back to tell me that we’d have to hop (换乘) trains three or four times to get there.
I was really glad she was heading the same way because it would have been impossible for me to figure it out on my own. So we went from one train station to the next, getting to know each other along the way.
She was really the sweetest woman. It was a 2.5-hour journey in total, and when we made it to the final destination (目的地), we got off and said our goodbyes. I had made it just in time to catch my train to Rome. She told me she had a train to catch as well. I asked her how much farther she had to go and it turned out that her home was two hours back the other way.
She had jumped from train to train and travelled the whole way just to make sure that I made it. I was in shock. A woman spent her whole day sitting on trains and taking her hours away from her home just to help out a confused tourist visiting her country. No matter how many countries I visit, I’ll always say the most beautiful country in the world is Switzerland.

44. What can we infer about the author from the story?
A. Her hometown is Rome, Italy. B. Her English is not better than the old woman’s.
C. She was not satisfied with her trip in Switzerland. D. She thinks people in Switzerland are quite nice.
45. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. The Most Beautiful Country B. An Accident on the Train

How do we know the time? A clock, a watch or a mobile phone can help us. However, many years ago there were no clocks and knowing the time was not so easy. Over the centuries people have developed different ways of telling the time.
About 5500 years ago, the Egyptians invented the sun clock. This was a tall stone building. Its shadow (影子) showed the movement of the sun. So people were able to know midday. The Egyptians made a sundial (日晷) about 3,500 years ago. It was smaller than the sun clock and could let people know the time for half a day. On cloudy days or at night, it was impossible to tell the time with a sun clock or a sundial. Water clocks were the first clocks not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows(流动) from one bottle to another. When the water reaches a certain level, it shows the hours. The Egyptians used water clocks about 3,400 years ago. These clocks were popular in the Middle East and China. But they failed to make people know the exact time.
In the 13th century, the mechanical clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. Over the next few centuries it was developed. For example, springs (发条) were added around 1500. This enabled people to get the correct time and allowed clocks to be smaller. In 1927, the first quartz(石英) clock was developed. Clocks became cheaper to build. It was also cheaper for ordinary people to own a clock. People began depending on them more and more to run businesses, markets and so on. More recently, in 1956, came the digital clock. And nowadays satellites send our mobile phones the time to the exact second.
There has been a lot of progress in timekeeping. Clocks are always changing but some things never change. Many of us still have trouble getting out of bed on time and not being late for school or work.
46. According to the passage, we can’t use a ________ to tell the time on a rainy day.
A. water clock B. mechanical clock C. digital clock D. sun clock

Think of a simple object—a piece of chalk, for example. Are you remembering its name, its shape, its color or its size? Arc you remembering what it is used for, or the sound it makes when the teacher writes on the blackboard? Scientists say that memory includes different parts of the brain, such as language and the ability of sense. They believe that you begin to create a memory when you notice something in your senses. Then messages are sent to different brain cells (细胞) which join together to form connections. A new connection goes into your shorter memory. It is stored there for about 30 seconds, and then it is either lost or stored in your long term memory.
Having a good memory means making lots of connections and storing them in your long term memory. To do this, you need to keep your brain in good shape. Eat plenty of brain food such as fish oil, fruit and vegetables. Laughter also makes your brain more active. Also, don’t forget to exercise. So do some sports or just move around a lot in the house. Finally, get plenty of sleep. This will make your memories grow stronger.
When you want to remember information, you must pay special attention. Use your senses-sight, smell, hearing and touch, and keep repeating the information. To do well in your exams this year, turn off the TV, silence your mobile phones, and review your work regularly. To remember something special, use your imagination to create visual connections. For example, you need to take a pencil, an eraser, your ID card and chips to your next exam. Imagine the ID card as the body of an animal, the pencil its long neck, and the eraser its head. Your animal is hungry, so now imagine it eating a bag of chips. It may sound crazy, but it’s fun and it works. Another way is to do something different to your room. Turn a picture upside-down, or tie a sock around the door handle to remind yourself of something to remember!
51. At the beginning, the writer gives an example to ________.
A. let readers remember the word B. show the importance of chalk
C. lead in the topic of the article D. make readers know his favorite
52. Which of the following can make our memories grow stronger?
A. Laughter. B. Plenty of sleep. C. Lots of exercise. D. Plenty of brain food.
53. What does the underlined “visual” mean in Chinese?
A. 相关的 B. 必要的 C. 感觉的 D. 视觉的
54. The main idea of the last paragraph is ________.
A. how to remember new information B. how to do well in exams
C. why to review your work D. what to eat to make memories stronger
55. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Memory has nothing to do with languages. B. A picture of eating chips is the most useful.
C. Laughter can help to improve our memory. D. Our brain is difficult to keep in good shape.

For example, we can read some good books, make notes, and often correct mistakes. Besides, we should also develop our hobbies.
