B Deanna Stellato-Dudek retired in 2001 because of injuries. But this week, she achieved the unthinkable. With her partner Maxime Deschamps, the 40-year-old former retiree defeated athletes less than half her age and became the oldest woman to win a World Figure Skating Championship. Even more remarkable, she did it in the pairs event, in which the top women are thrown across the ice, lifted over their partners’ heads with one arm, and tossed (抛) more than 10 feet in the air. Stellato-Dudek had an impressive junior career as a singles skater, winning the 1999-2000 International Junior Grand Prix Final and receiving the silver medal at the 2000 World Junior Championships. However, by 2001, a few significant injuries led to her decision to retire at age 17. For the next 16 years, Stellato-Dudek lived a relatively normal adulthood. She became a successful aesthetician (美学家) and got married. She was no longer attempting risky triple (转体三周的) jumps on international ice. But the feelings of unfinished business kept disturbing her — whether she had quit the sport too early and whether she had more to achieve in skating. So she tried on her old skates and attempted the impossible — learning how to become a pairs skater in her 30s and returning to competitive ice. Her efforts paid off, and now Stellato-Dudek and her partner are unlikely world champions at ages 40 and 32. Stellato-Dudek said she hoped the historic victory inspired everyone, even non-skaters, who might think it was too late to pursue and achieve their goals. “I hope it encourages people not to stop before they reach their potential,” she told reporters after winning the title Thursday night. Stellato-Dudek is not done. Her next major goal is to compete in the 2026 Winter Olympics at age 42. “She is a fighter,” her partner said. “For her, it’s the Olympics every day. ” 4. What do we know about Stellato-Dudek from paragraph 1? A. She entered the competition alone. B. She was younger than her competitors. C. She returned to skating because she lost her job. D. She won the championship in pairs skating. 5. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Stellato-Dudek? A. Her past achievements. B. Her career plans. C. The challenges she met. D. The training she went through. 6. What did Stellato-Dudek do after her retirement? A. She worked as a coach. B. She got married. C. She threw away her old skates. D. She kept trying risky triple jumps. 7. Which word can best describe Stellato-Dudek? A. Wise and sympathetic. B. Ambitious and determined. C. Creative and generous. D. Considerate and cautious. C Birds usually build their nests with sticks, leaves or grass. But do you know that birds are also building their nests with rubbish these years? The rubbish includes cigarette butts (烟头) and plastic bags. A group of European scientists looked into about 35,000 studies on bird nests. They found that birds have used man-made things in nests almost everywhere on Earth except Antarctica. Some rubbish seems to be helpful. This is why birds “like” putting it in their nests. For example, cigarette butts have a special smell, so they can keep insects away and protect the baby birds. Plastic bags are useful in keeping the animals warm, and other hard things, such as paper cards, can make nests stronger. However, in the end, human rubbish may only bring more harm to birds. The toxic chemicals in cigarettes hurt the baby birds. They may get sick or have shorter lives, according to a study. To make matters worse, if the cigarette still burns when the bird brings it back to its home, it may set fire to the nest. Pieces of fishing net may also trap birds, and it’s impossible for them to get out by themselves. If the baby birds eat other kinds of rubbish by accident, they will also get hurt. Our bird friends in the air are feeling the bad effects of humans polluting the environment. 8. What did the European scientists find? A. There is rubbish in the nests of many birds. B. Some people help birds build their nests. C. There is almost no bird living in Antarctica. D. Birds can help pick up rubbish. 9. What does the underlined word “toxic” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Smelly. B. Beneficial. C. Poisonous. D. Splendid. 10. How can cigarette butts “help” birds? A. They can burn other harmful rubbish. B. They can make nests stronger. C. They can keep birds warm. D. They can keep insects away. 11. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The harmful activities that humans have done to the environment. B. The harm that the environment brings to the wild animals. C. The reason why birds like using rubbish to build their nests. D. Human rubbish may bring more harm to birds. D The winner of the Natural History Museum of London’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award is Nima Sarikhani, for her image of a polar bear sleeping on sea ice, which is called “Ice Bed”. It was taken in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago. Sarikhani spent three days looking for polar bears but without success as they were trapped in a thick fog. But then, as the ship came across some sea ice, she saw two polar bears. She and her team tracked them for eight hours. And under the light of the midnight sun, the bear clawed out a bed on a small iceberg before sleeping. The photograph inspires strong emotions in all its viewers. While climate change is the biggest challenge for humans, the photograph also inspires hope that there is still time to fix the mess we have caused. Polar bears are known to dig themselves spots to sleep in, which are sometimes referred to as “day bed”. They’re also known to take one-to two-hour-long sleeps, especially after a good meal. According to the museum, the area where the polar bear was taken on film is among the most isolated (孤立) in the world, and holds a population of 19 polar bears that rely on the sea ice to travel and hunt offshore. But air temperatures in Svalbard have increased by 3℃ to 5℃over the past 40 to 50 years, which has resulted in heavy winter rainfall and some areas being ice-free most of the year. While the bears that follow sea ice may still be able to hunt year-round, this is increasingly over deeper waters, which may be less productive. Less sea ice for polar bears to use as a way to safely travel has also led to the animals having less genetic (基因的) diversity. There aren’t as many opportunities for different groups to mix. This is leading to increased inbreeding among local bears. At present, Svalbard’s polar bear population is still considered to be stable, but as global temperatures continue to increase, that may not be the case for long. 12. What made it difficult for Sarikhani to spot polar bears in the beginning? A. The outdated equipment. B. The terrible weather. C. The lack of support. D. The tight schedule. 13. What poses a risk to polar bears in Svalbard? A. The loss of sea ice. B. The extremely low temperature. C. The isolated position. D. The increase in genetic diversity. 14. What is the author’s attitude to the future of Svalbard’s polar bears? A. Uncaring. B. Worried. C. Unclear. D. Optimistic. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. Norway’s Svalbard Archipelago B. The Biggest Challenge for Polar Bears C. An Award-Winning Photo “Ice Bed” D. The Reduction in Polar Bear Population Fungi (真菌) play an important role in ecosystems, are a source of food, and make key contributions to the world of medicine. ____16____ An estimated two million fungal species — more than 90% of all fungi — have yet to be described by science, according to a science reporter. ____17____ Scientists are trying to find out more about this largely unexplored world, but it is challenging. Dr Martyn Ainsworth, a senior researcher from Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in London, says, “We can grow a certain number in the lab. ____18____ This has held back a lot of research.” ____19____ “A lot of people are afraid of poisonous mushrooms,” says Dr Jassy Drakulic, a plant pathologist, “but only a very small proportion of the thousands of species of fungi in the world can cause disease.” Most are harmless and often beneficial, called by some “the hidden helpers of our environment”. Some fungi provide food and shelter for wildlife, help plants absorb water and nutrients and recycle waste and dead matter. Other types of fungi grow on the roots of trees and plants, forming a huge underground network that helps nourish trees. ____20____ So next time you add mushrooms to your dinner, take a painkiller for a headache, or go for a walk through the woods, remember to thank the living things that made it all possible — fungi. A. Are mushrooms a type of fungus? B. So, why do we know so little about them? C. Wetlands are important because they provide food and shelter for wildlife. D. The fact that we know so little about fungi leads us to misunderstand them. E. “Fungi are really the behind-the-scenes team doing all the work,” adds Dr Ainsworth. F. But there is a whole host of fungi that we cannot grow in the lab. G. In the UK, there are around 25,000 species of fungi — five or six times more than plants. In February 2020, Max’s friend Rick was diagnosed with cancer. For two long years, Bolster had been homeless. Every day was a struggle for survival. Every night was a battle against hopelessness. Bolster would often find herself in tears, her gaze lost in the labyrinth (迷宫) of city streets. “I had been in tears, thinking to myself,” she recalled later, “‘God, when is the tide going to turn?’” But little did she know that her tide was about to turn in the most unexpected way Despite her circumstances, Bolster had always loved to sing. On occasion, she would find comfort in her voice, using it to drown out the noise of the city and the clamor (喧闹)of her own troubles. One day, as she sang on a street corner, her voice caught the ear of a stranger. Matt Shearer, a radio news reporter, had been out covering another story but found himself captivated by the woman’s song. There was something raw and real in her voice that touched him deeply. He approached Bolster and struck up a conversation, sensing that there was a greater story here than the one he had initially set out to find. As they talked, Bolster shared with Shearer what mattered most to her — a song she had written during her darkest hours. The lyrics were scribbled (潦草地写) on a piece of cardboard that had once served as her mattress (床垫) at night. The melody existed only in her mind, but it was a tune that held great significance for her. This song was not just words; it was her life story, her pain, her joy, and her hope all rolled into one powerful anthem (赞歌). Shearer was moved by Bolster’s passion for her music and her desire to share it with the world. He knew deep down that he could help make this dream a reality. With connections in the music industry and a strong sense of purpose, Shearer vowed to help Bolster record her song professionally. Paragraph 1: A few days later, Shearer drove her to a destination that would change her life forever — a recording studio. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: With Shearer’s backing, Bolster uploaded her creation to Bandcamp, a platform where independent artists can shine. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力 1—5 BAACC 6—10 BCBAA 11—15 BCAAC 16—20 CCBBA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 葫芦岛市普通高中2023-2024学年下学期期末考试 高一英语 考生注意: 1. 1. 4. A 9. C 10. D 11. 根据文章第二段“They found that birds have used man-made things in nests almost everywhere on Earth except Antarctica.”(他们发现除了南极洲之外,几乎地球上所有地方的鸟巢中都有人造物品)可知,欧洲科学家发现许多鸟类的巢穴中有垃圾。故选A项。 根据文章第三段“The toxic chemicals in cigarettes hurt the baby birds.”(烟头中的toxic化学物质伤害幼鸟)可知,有毒的化学物质会伤害幼鸟。 根据文章第二段“For example, cigarette butts have a special smell, so they can keep insects away and protect the baby birds.”(例如,烟头有一种特殊的味道,可以驱赶昆虫,保护幼鸟)可知,烟头可以帮助鸟类是因为它们能驱赶昆虫。 根据最后一段“To make matters worse, if the cigarette still burns when the bird brings it back to its home, it may set fire to the nest. Pieces of fishing net may also trap birds, and it’s impossible for them to get out by themselves. If the baby birds eat other kinds of rubbish by accident, they will also get hurt. Our bird friends in the air are feeling the bad effects of humans polluting the environment.”(更糟糕的是,如果烟还在燃烧,当鸟把它带回它的家,它可能会点燃鸟巢。 D The winner of the Natural History Museum of London’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award is Nima Sarikhani, for her image of a polar bear sleeping on sea ice, which is called “Ice Bed”. The Reduction in Polar Bear Population 【答案】12. B 13. A 14. B 15. ____20____ So, next time you add mushrooms to your dinner, take a painkiller for a headache, or go for a walk through the woods, remember to thank the living things that made it all possible — fungi. 16. B 17. G 18. F 19. D 20. For two long years, Bolster had been homeless. Every day was a struggle for survival. Every night was a battle against hopelessness. Bolster would often find herself in tears, her gaze lost in the labyrinth (迷宫) of city streets. “I had been in tears, thinking to myself,” she recalled later, “‘God, when is the tide going to turn?’” But little did she know that her tide was about to turn in the most unexpected way. Despite her circumstances, Bolster had always loved to sing. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】A few days later, Shearer drove her to a destination that would change her life forever – a recording studio. As they stepped inside, the air was thick with anticipation and the hum of high-tech equipment. Surrounded by mics and sound boards, Bolster felt a rush of emotions: part thrill, part jitters. Luckily, Shearer's connections had brought in a team of experts – an engineer and a producer – to guide her through the process. And as they hit record, something incredible happened. The very song that had been Bolster's beacon of hope during her toughest times now filled the room with its raw, emotional energy, capturing the push and pull of love’s complex dance. “I was blown away,” Shearer exclaimed, his voice heavy with awe. “Her lyrics were so powerful – they spoke straight to the heart.” With Shearer's backing, Bolster uploaded her creation to Bandcamp, a platform where independent artists can shine. What happened next was nothing short of miraculous: her song struck a chord with listeners worldwide, racking up nearly $5,000 in downloads in just a few weeks. As the song’s popularity continued to soar, it became a beacon of hope for others seeking to overcome adversity and pursue their dreams. For Bolster, this wasn’t just about the money; it was about transforming despair into hope, invisibility into recognition, and most profoundly, forging an unbreakable bond of friendship that defied all expectations. In a world often shadowed by harshness and despair, their story shines brightly, standing as a testament to the power of human empathy and support which can have a ripple effect that transcends time and space. 词汇激活 行为类 ①迈进:stepped inside/walked in/entered/advanced ②填满:filled/flooded/overflowed/brimmed ③引导:guided/directed/led/ushered 情绪类 ①兴奋:thrill/excitement/exhilaration/enthusiasm ②紧张:jitters/nervousness/anxiety/tension 【点睛】【高分句型1】As they stepped inside, the air was thick with anticipation and the hum of high-tech equipment.(运用了as引导的时间状语从句) 【高分句型2】In a world often shadowed by harshness and despair, their story shines brightly, standing as a testament to the power of human empathy and support which can have a ripple effect that transcends time and space.(运用了which引导的限制性定语从句) 听力 1—5 BAACC 6—10 BCBAA 11—15 BCAAC 16—20 CCBBA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
