National Parks: Made for You and Me
·While the term “national park” is associated with images of the American West, there are national park units in every. U. S. state and territory. Together they welcome about 300 million visitors each year and span some 85 million acres, almost 55 million of which are in Alaska.
·There are more than 400 sites in the National Park System, though that includes far more than what we traditionally think of as “parks”, such as parkways and rivers, Strictly speaking, there are 63 national parks (California has the most, with nine), but there are also national historic parks, national military parks, and other designations. A few are thoroughly unique. Among them: the White House.
·The National Park Service (NPS) oversees all 400+ of these sites. But rules about what you can and cannot do in national parks differ from site to site. Activities that are prohibited at national parks, such as hunting and fishing, are allowed on some national preserves. Many national parks allow the scattering of ashes (the Grand Canyon is a notable exception); though, like Hitchcock, you need to obtain NPS permission. The same goes for couples who wish to marry inside a national park.
·Additions to the National Park System generally require acts of Congress, but the president can name new national monuments. Of the 63 national parks, only one is named after a president: Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota.
·It was another president who created the NPS in 1916; Woodrow Wilson Parks that predate (早于) the NPS include Yosemite in California and Mount Rainier in Washington. But Yellowstone, which turned 150 this year, was the world’s first national park. Today, more than 100 countries have national parks and preserves. UPS driver Ryan Arens was making a delivery near a pond in Bozeman, Montana, when he heard a strange sound. “Like a cry for help,” he told the dodo. com, a website for animal lovers.
It was December 2018, and about 15 feet from the frozen banks was the source of that cry — a half-submerged brown-and-white wirehaired hound (猎犬), struggling to cling to a thin layer of ice. How she got there no one knows, but an elderly man was already on the scene, determined to save her. He’d entered the pond in a rowboat and was hacking away at the ice with a rock to create a path to the dog.
It was slow going, and Arens, 44, thought he stood a better chance. “Animals are my weakness,” he told the Great Falls Tribune, explaining why he jumped into the water, even though the temperature was -30°C, and commandeered the rowboat.
His heart thumping, Arens slid closer to the dog and used the other man’s rock to smash away at the ice. He gave one strong heave too many and slipped off the boat, crashing into 16 feet of freezing water. He resurfaced in time to see the dog going under. Using nervous energy to keep warm, he swam about five feet toward her, caught hold of her collar, and pulled her to the ice. He then carried the dog into the boat and slid it back to the shore, where anxious bystanders carried the dog to the home of the rowboat owner, who is a retired veterinarian.
Once in the house himself, Arens jumped into a warm shower with the dog until they both defrosted. A few more minutes in the pond, the vet told Arens, and the dog would have likely suffered cardiac arrest
The next day, Arens was back working the same neighborhood when the dog’s owner came over to thank him for saving Sadie. “Would you like to meet her?” he asked. He opened the door to his pickup, and Sadie rushed out.
She made a beeline for Arens, leaping on him and bathing him in wet kisses.
“That special delivery,” says Arens, “was the highlight of my UPS career.”

A.his swinging the rock caused the great opposite force.

D.Because it could make him a famous person.

History has been characterized differently. It’s hard to define such a monumental thing without dealing with the tensions between what is fact and what is fiction, as well as what was included and what was left out. So it’s only fitting that those tensions are wrapped up in the history of the word itself.
The short version is that the term history has evolved from an ancient Greek verb that means “to know”. The Greek word historia originally meant inquiry, the act of seeking knowledge, as well as the knowledge that results from inquiry. And from there it’s a short jump to the accounts of events that a person might put together from making inquiries-what we might call stories.
The words story and history share much of their ancestry, and in previous eras, the overlap between them was much messier than it is today. The working out of distinction has taken centuries. Today, we might think of the dividing line as the one between fact and fiction. Stories are fanciful tales woven at bedtime. That word can even be used to describe an outright lie. Histories, on the other hand, are records of events. That word refers to all time before this very moment and everything that really happened up to now.
The distinction is still messier than that, of course. Plenty of stories like the story of a person’s life or a "true story" on which a less-true film is based -are supposed to be factual. And plenty of stories go against easy categorization one way or the other. Take the notion of someone telling their side of a story. To them, that account might be perfectly correct. To someone else, that account might be totally incorrect.
As the linguistic divide has evolved since the Middle Ages, we have come to expect more from history -that it be free from the imperfections of viewpoint and selective memory that stories so often contain. Yet it isn’t, humans being the imperfect creatures and history being something that is made rather than handed down from some all-knowing writer.
That is why feminists, for example, rejected the word history and championed the notion of herstory during the 1970s to point out the fact that history has mostly come from a male perspective. The “his” in history has nothing, linguistically, to do with the pronoun referring to a male person. And some critics pointed that out back in the 1970s, saying that the invention of herstory showed ignorance about where the word comes from. But there’s evidence that the feminists knew as much at the time. And more importantly, the fact that it sounds possible that there would be a link can still tell us something. It can suggest a lot the about gender and whether a female viewpoint is included in the tales passed down in textbooks. That’s why, even if the origins of the word “history” are clear, the question of who gets to decide which version of the past is the right one remains a controversial debate centuries after the term came to be.
46.The word “overlap” in Paragraph 3 probably indicates ____.
A.the knowledge people put together from different inquiries

C.the meaning and use both “story” and “history” shared

Millions of older people, laborers and cancer sufferers could be unable to use their fingerprints to log in online bank accounts. Banks are spending millions of pounds on fingerprint technology to replace passwords. But banks may have to rethink these plans after warnings that the technology flawed (有缺陷). Representatives of major banks at a London conference were told many older people’s fingerprints are too faded for the machines to recognize.
John Daugman, a professor of computer vision and pattern recognition at the University of Cambridge, says, “Fingerprints can ‘rub off’ for many kinds of laborers—their skin becomes almost smooth. Gardeners often acquire a lot of wounds on their fingers, and people who work with chemicals, such as cleaners, also suffer damage of fingerprints.”
Jean Slocombe, a senior nurse at Cancer Research UK, says, “Some drugs can cause the skin of hands and feet to peel. In severe cases, the fingers can peel, and it’s possible that this could change a patient’s fingerprints. This should improve once treatment ceases, but severe scarring(伤疤) can change fingerprints in the long term.”
Fingerprints are generally considered more secure than passwords for several reasons. Unlike passwords, fingerprints cannot be easily copied, written down, shared, or guessed. Additionally, it is impossible to forget one’s fingerprints. Currently, banks offer customers the option to use a password or PIN (personal identification number) for online access to their money. However, technology experts have predicted that companies might do away with passwords entirely to decrease the risk of fraud (诈骗). Should this transition to fingerprint technology occur, there is a potential risk that millions of bank customers could find themselves unable to access their accounts.
Banks have tried other security measures, such as facial recognition—but fingerprint technology is often the best one, as it is fast and people are more familiar with it. Nick Dryden, a chief executive of technology company Sthaler, says, “Businesses like fingerprint technology because it’s fast.”
“There must always be a back-up so that if it doesn’t work, there is another way of paying, such as with a password.” Dryden adds that using the veins(静脉) in someone’s fingers to identify them is more secure and means people with faded prints will not be left behind as technology advances.
51.Which of the following is the critical flaw of using fingerprints to log into accounts?
A.Fingerprints can be easily stolen from photos.
B.Fingerprint recognition adapts to medical changes.
C.The application of fingerprint technology costs too much.
D.Elderly people’s fingerprints may be too faint for detection.
52.According to John Daugman, what causes unrecognizable fingerprints?
A.Excessive use of technology. B.Physical labor and natural aging.
C.Environmental exposure process. D.Lack of proper fingerprinting equipment.
53.What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.Experts recommend replacing passwords soon.
B.Fingerprints can totally avoid the risk of fraud.
C.Switching to fingerprints might lock out many customers.
D.Passwords and PINs are preferred by banks due to their simplicity.
54.Which is Dryden’s suggestion about fingerprint technology?
A.Using veins instead of fingerprints isn’t workable.
B.There must be other ways to get into bank accounts.
C.Its greatest advantage is its high speed of recognition.
D.Passwords are still the most reliable security measure now.
55.’What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Comparing password and fingerprint security.
B.Enhancing and upgrading bank security measures.
C.Presenting fingerprint technology challenges in banking.
D.Advancing fingerprint and facial recognition technology.
In every gym class I've taken, I felt like the odd one out. Opening the door, I hesitantly asked, “Is this where the HIIT class is?” The instructor yelled, “Grab a dumbbell and yoga mat. We're late for warm-up!” Breathing heavily on the mat, I wasn't sure if I'd make it through the hour.
Glancing around the room, I seemed to be the only one struggling. Everyone else, in their tightly fitted gym wear and not a sign of sweat to be seen, looked as if they belonged. I, on the other hand, with my messy hair and oversized clothes, wondered why I had ever bothered coming.
Earlier that year, I had decided to give fitness a real shot. All my life, exercise had been a foreign concept and in school, gym class was a place of guaranteed embarrassment and humiliation.
I nervously showed up to my university gym for spin class (动感单车课程) on a Sunday morning. I had considered canceling multiple times, but I told myself that showing up was all that mattered.
The instructor was incredibly kind. Within minutes of seeing my weak form, he knew I was new to the class. He walked us through all the various positions on the bike multiple times.
The first time I tried to stand on the bike pedals, I felt my legs shake and immediately sat down. But with each class, my comfort on the bike grew and I became less focused on how I looked and more focused on looking inward. Whether I needed to think about something bugging me, dream about the future or just mindlessly pedal, spin class became my hour a week just for me.
The more I spun, the more I realized how powerful my body was. For what felt like the first time, I was proud of my body's capabilities.
After nine months of spinning, I wanted to challenge myself again. And that's how I found myself in the high-intensity class. If spin class got me used to moving my body, then HIIT class taught me that I have to continuously work to build my fitness and tackle my insecurities.
In all, what truly matters is showing up, not what you wear or your fitness abilities. Because once you show up, the rest gets easier, one sweaty adventure at a time.
56.Why did the author feel like the odd one out in the gym class?(no more than 10 words)
57.What does the underlined part mean in paragraph 3?(no more than 10 words)
58.What did the author realize about her body after attending spin class for nine months?(no more than 6 words)

根据第一段最后一句“Together they welcome about 300 million visitors each year and span some 85 million acres, almost 55 million of which are in Alaska.(它们每年共接待约3亿游客,占地约8500万英亩,其中近5500万英亩在阿拉斯加。)”

根据最后一段第二句“But Yellowstone, which turned 150 this year, was the world’s first national park.(但今年年满150岁的黄石公园是世界上第一个国家公园。)”,第二段“There are more than 400 sites in the National Park System, though that includes far more than what we traditionally think of as “parks”, such as parkways and rivers, Strictly speaking, there are 63 national parks (California has the most, with nine), but there are also national historic parks, national military parks, and other designations. A few are thoroughly unique. Among them: the White House.(国家公园系统中有400多个景点,尽管这远远超过了我们传统上认为的“公园”,如公园道路和河流,严格地说,有63个国家公园(加州最多,有9个),但也有国家历史公园,国家军事公园和其他指定的公园。有几个是完全独特的。其中包括白宫。)”和第三段第四句“Many national parks allow the scattering of ashes (the Grand Canyon is a notable exception); though, like Hitchcock, you need to obtain NPS permission.(许多国家公园允许人们撒骨灰(大峡谷是个明显的例外);不过,像希区柯克一样,你需要获得NPS的许可。)”

根据文章第二段第一句“It was December 2018, and about 15 feet from the frozen banks was the source of that cry — a half-submerged brown-and-white wirehaired hound ( 猎犬 ), struggling to cling to a thin layer of ice. ”(那是2018年12月,离结冰的河岸约15英尺的地方是叫声的来源—一只半浸在水中的棕白色硬毛猎犬,挣扎着抓住一层薄冰。)和第四段后两句“ Using nervous energy to keep warm, he swam about five feet toward her, caught hold of her collar, and pulled her to the ice. He then carried the dog into the boat and slid it back to the shore, where anxious bystanders carried the dog to the home of the rowboat owner, who is a retired veterinarian.”(他利用紧张的能量来保暖,向她游了大约五英尺,抓住她的衣领,把她拉到冰上。
根据文章第三段“It was slow going, and Arens, 44, thought he stood a better chance. “ Animals are my weakness,” he told the Great Falls Tribune, explaining why he jumped into the water, even though the temperature was -30°C, and commandeered the rowboat.”(进展缓慢,44岁的阿伦斯认为自己胜算更大。“......”
根据文章第四段前两句“His heart thumping, Arens slid closer to the dog and used the other man’s rock to smash away at the ice. He gave one strong heave too many and slipped off the boat, crashing into 16 feet of freezing water.”(阿伦斯的心怦怦直跳,他滑近狗,用另一个人的石头砸冰。 故选A项。
根据文章最后一段““That special delivery,” says Arens, “was the highlight of my UPS career.””(“那次快递,”阿伦斯说,“是我UPS职业生涯的亮点。”)
根据文章第二段“It was December 2018, and about 15 feet from the frozen banks was the source of that cry — a half-submerged brown-and-white wirehaired hound (猎犬), struggling to cling to a thin layer of ice. How she got there no one knows, but an elderly man was already on the scene, determined to save her. He’d entered the pond in a rowboat and was hacking away at the ice with a rock to create a path to the dog.”(那是2018年12月,离结冰的河岸约15英尺的地方是叫声的来源—一只半浸在水中的棕白色硬毛猎犬,挣扎着抓住一层薄冰。

根据划线单词前一句“The words story and history share much of their ancestry (故事(story)和历史(history)这两个词有很多共同的渊源)”和下一句“The working out of distinction has taken centuries.(区分已经花了几个世纪的时间。)”
根据文章第四段“The distinction is still messier than that, of course. Plenty of stories like the story of a person’s life or a "true story" on which a less-true film is based -are supposed to be factual. And plenty of stories go against easy categorization one way or the other.(当然,区别仍然比这更复杂。很多故事,比如一个人的生活故事,或者一部不太真实的电影所依据的“真实故事”,都应该是真实的。很多故事都以这样或那样的方式违背了简单的分类。)”可知,区分历史和故事仍然很混乱,因为很多故事被认为是真实的,但也有很多故事不容易归类为事实或虚构。故选D。
48.细节理解题。根据文章第六段“That is why feminists, for example, rejected the word history and championed the notion of herstory during the 1970s to point out the fact that history has mostly come from a male perspective.(这就是为什么女权主义者在20世纪70年代拒绝使用“history”这个词,并支持“历史故事”的概念,以指出历史主要来自男性视角的事实。)”
根据文章第五段“As the linguistic divide has evolved since the Middle Ages, we have come to expect more from history -that it be free from the imperfections of viewpoint and selective memory that stories so often contain. Yet it isn’t, humans being the imperfect creatures and history being something that is made rather than handed down from some all-knowing writer.(自中世纪以来,随着语言鸿沟的演变,我们开始对历史有了更多的期望,希望它能摆脱故事中经常包含的观点和选择性记忆的不完善。但事实并非如此,人类是不完美的生物,历史是创造出来的,而不是某个无所不知的作家传下来的。)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讲述的是历史只是单方面制作的故事,并不总是陈述了事实。故选D。
50.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“The short version is that the term history has evolved from an ancient Greek verb that means “to know”. The Greek word historia originally meant inquiry, the act of seeking knowledge, as well as the knowledge that results from inquiry. And from there it’s a short jump to the accounts of events that a person might put together from making inquiries-what we might call stories.(简而言之,“历史”一词是从一个古希腊动词演变而来的,意思是“知道”。希腊单词historia最初的意思是探究,探求知识的行为,以及探究所产生的知识。从这里,我们可以快速跳到一个人通过调查拼凑起来的事件的叙述——我们可以称之为故事。)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讨论了“history”一词的起源和含义。故选A。

根据第一段“Representatives of major banks at a London conference were told many older people’s fingerprints are too faded for the machines to recognize.”(在伦敦举行的一次会议上,各大银行的代表被告知,许多老年人的指纹几近消失,机器无法识别。)
根据第二段John Daugman说的话“Fingerprints can ‘rub off’ for many kinds of laborers—their skin becomes almost smooth. Gardeners often acquire a lot of wounds on their fingers, and people who work with chemicals, such as cleaners, also suffer damage of fingerprints.”(对许多劳动者来说,指纹可以被“擦掉”——他们的皮肤变得几乎光滑。
根据第四段“Should this transition to fingerprint technology occur, there is a potential risk that millions of bank customers could find themselves unable to access their accounts.”(如果向指纹技术过渡,数百万银行客户可能会发现自己无法访问自己的账户。)
根据最后一段Dryden说的话“There must always be a back-up so that if it doesn’t work, there is another way of paying, such as with a password.”(必须总要有一个备用方案,这样如果它不起作用,还有另一种支付方式,比如使用密码。)
根据第一段“Banks are spending millions of pounds on fingerprint technology to replace passwords. But banks may have to rethink these plans after warnings that the technology flawed (有缺陷). ”(银行正在花费数百万英镑研发指纹技术来取代密码。但银行可能不得不重新考虑这些计划,因为有人警告说这项技术存在缺陷。)及全文内容可知,文章主要描述了银行在尝试采用指纹技术登录银行账户的过程中,因许多老年人、劳动者和癌症患者的指纹已无法识别,所面临的困难和挑战。故选C。

56.第二段提到“Glancing around the room, I seemed to be the only one struggling. Everyone else, in their tightly fitted gym wear and not a sign of sweat to be seen, looked as if they belonged.”(环顾房间,我似乎是唯一一个挣扎的人。 Because she was struggling more than others./Because she seemed to be the only one struggling.。
I hadn't been good at/confident in/familiar with doing exercise.。
58.第八段提到“After nine months of spinning, I wanted to challenge myself again. And that's how I found myself in the high-intensity class. If spin class got me used to moving my body, then HIIT class taught me that I have to continuously work to build my fitness and tackle my insecurities.”(练了九个月的单车后,我想再次挑战自己。 That her body was capable./How powerful her body was.。
59.第八段提到“If spin class got me used to moving my body, then HIIT class taught me that I have to continuously work to build my fitness and tackle my insecurities.”(如果说动感单车课程让我习惯了运动身体,那么HIIT课程教会我必须不断地锻炼身体,解决不安全感。) Because she wanted to build her fitness and tackle her insecurities.。
60.文章第一段提到“Breathing heavily on the mat, I wasn't sure if I'd make it through the hour.”(我在垫子上喘着粗气,不知道自己能不能撑过这一小时。) Showing up and making an effort is half the battle. It inspires me to work hard with perseverance despite difficulties in my studies.
