A. intelligent and wise B. creative and imaginative C. concentrated and attentive D. motivated and active B David loved his grandson Philip dearly. The boy reminded him of himself at an early age. They had a lot of fun together, exploring the backyard and hiking in the nearby park. However, one weekend, Philip felt ill and had to stay in bed. David made sure to keep his grandson entertained by finding a book they could enjoy together. Before handing it to Philip, he decided to leaf through it and look back at the story. However, while looking through it, he didn’t expect to see another piece of his youth, this time in the form of a photograph of him and his old friends. There were four in the picture — David, Steve, Dorothy, and Teresa. They were neighbors and often went to the beach together. In the photo, the four of them were playing on the sand. Suddenly, David wondered about the people in the photograph, curious to know where life had taken them. Philip noticed that and asked “What happened, Grandpa?” David smiled, excitedly taking the book and the photo to Philip. “Look, Philip. This is an old photo of my friends and me!” he said. “I wish I could meet them again.” Philip suggested looking for them on Facebook. Through Philip’s tablet, they searched for David’s friends. To Philip’s surprise, they weren’t on the social media platform. David decided to go to his hometown to find Steve, Dorothy, and Teresa. The town had changed a lot and he found that Dorothy’s and Steve’s houses were no longer there. Still hopeful, David decided to visit the last address, which was Teresa’s. A young girl opened the door. “I’m sorry, young lady. I was just looking for Teresa Green, but I might have gotten the address wrong,” he said. Suddenly, the girl shouted, “Grandma, you have a visitor!” 4. Why did David find a book to enjoy with Philip? A. Because Philip was entertained most by books. B. Because David intended to show Philip a picture. C. Because David remembered something in the book. D. Because Philip was not in good condition on that day. 5. What surprised David as he was looking through the book? A. A leaf. B. A picture. C. Some friends. D. Some beach tours. 6. How did Philip help David search for his friends? A. By posting the picture online. B. By visiting them with David. C. By giving away his tablet as a gift. D. By looking for them on Facebook. 7. What might the following paragraph probably be about? A. David told Philip about the wrong addresses. B. David talked with the girl about some life lessons. C. David and Teresa managed to contact Steve and Dorothy. D. David apologized sincerely for the trouble he had caused. C Do you often have seafood like crabs? What will you do with the crab shells (壳) after your big seafood dinner? Scientists have a wonderful way to deal with it. They want to use a chemical found in crab shells to make batteries (电池) greener. “We think both the biodegradability of material, or environmental impact and the performance of the batteries are important for a good product,” said Liangbing Hu, director of the University of Maryland’s Center for Materials Innovation. As nowadays people care about the environment more and more and tend to use green energy and electric cars the batteries being used for such technology also need to be eco-friendly. But the chemicals used in traditional batteries such as lithium-ion can take hundreds or thousands of years to break down. These chemicals are also harmful and easy to burn. In some cases, batteries have caught fire on aircraft, or caused fires in waste and recycling sites. The researchers in Maryland have developed batteries that use a chemical, chitin, taken from crab shells. This material is valuable, but usually thrown away as food waste from restaurants. Scientists have long been researching its various applications. Through chemical processing, chitin can finally be turned into a piece of firm gel (凝胶), which is suitable to be used for a battery. By mixing it with zinc, a bluish-white metal increasingly used to make batteries that are cheap and safe, Hu’s team was able to create a renewable battery. The batteries are not easy to burn and two thirds of the battery can break down in the earth in just five months leaving behind recyclable zinc. Antonio J Fernández Romero, a professor of materials science for energy production at the University of Cartagena in Spain, who was not involved in the study, said, “A new battery that is environment-friendly and cheap, is one of the more important products that must be developed in the coming years.” 8. Why does the author ask the questions in Paragraph 1? A. To attract readers with a taste for seafood. B. To encourage us to explore science. C. To call on us to protect the environment. D. To introduce the eco-friendly battery. 9. What does the underlined word “biodegradability ”in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. The ability to produce electricity. B. The ability to be transformed. C. The ability to be broken down. D. The ability to be folded. 10. What can we infer from Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4? A. The material from crab shells is collected by restaurants. B. Chitin has been applied to many fields in different industries. C. Traditional batteries are neither safe nor environment-friendly. D. Chitin is valuable because crabs are not cheap in the restaurants. 11. What’s Romero’s attitude towards the new battery’s future? A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Uncertain. D In 2019, 76% of people between the ages of 65 and 74, who participated in a survey, said they used social media, compared to 40% five years earlier. An increase in social media use was also seen among people aged 75 and over. A growing number of elderly people are active on social networks and are using the Internet to make calls. But how will you react when you find out your grandparents are using social media? The two most common reactions seem to be “Oh no! They’re going to see everything I post and start writing comments” or “I’m going to have to spend hours teaching them how to work this”. It’s only reasonable that your grandparents should need help to create an account on Facebook. And who’s a better expert than you to teach them the basics of social media? You can either bravely offer your help or regret it later. Once they have learned how to use social media, they may never get off their device again! Take Baddie Winkle, for example. This 92-year-old granny has over three million followers on Instagram, including some celebrities (名人)! You should be happy your grandparents are eager to join the digital worlds. Social media use can have a number of health benefits for the elderly. Nowadays families are more geographically distant than ever before, and social media is a great way to connect with faraway relatives. While nothing replaces face-to-face communication, social media is a great way to keep in touch with family members. Another benefit is that elderly people can make new friends who have similar interests, or find long-lost friends from childhood. Finally, social media use can be very educational. Looking through Facebook news is a great way to stay informed and keep up to date with local and global events. Have your grandparents had a social media account yet? Have they asked you to help them create one, but you didn’t bother? Perhaps you should make the effort because it may affect their quality of life. 12 How do young people usually react to their grandparents’ using social media? A. They find it amazing. B. They try to offer advice. C. They have much concern. D. They pay little attention to it. 13. What can be learned about Baddie Winkle? A. She mainly focuses on celebrities. B. She is famous on social media despite her age. C. She finds it easy to learn how to use social media. D. She tries very hard to behave like an ordinary person. 14. Social media use can make the elderly . A. create Facebook news B. keep up with the times C. keep good health physically D. replace face-to-face communication 15. What would be the best title for the text? A. Grandparents busy online B. Grandparents’ quality time C. Social media’s health benefits D. Social media’s increasing use The moon is a mysterious place that has fascinated humans for centuries. The sun was just beginning to peek through the curtains, casting a warm glow over my bedroom. The air was fresh and crisp, filled with the promise of a new day. I quickly dressed in my running gear, grabbed my water bottle, and stepped out into the quiet street. The neighborhood was still mostly asleep, except for a few early birds like me. I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with the invigorating air, and began my usual route. The jogging path was familiar to me, and I knew every curve and bump in the road. As I ran, I let my mind wander, thinking about the day ahead and the tasks that awaited me. My steps were steady and rhythmic, like a metronome (节拍器) keeping time with my thoughts. As the sun rose higher in the sky, the neighborhood began to wake up. I could hear the sounds of morning routines starting up—the squeak of a door hinge, the clang of a pot on a stove, the cheerful chatter of neighbors greeting each other. These sounds were a comforting backdrop to my jog, adding a sense of normality and routine to the start of my day. After about thirty minutes, I reached the end of my route and turned back towards home. My legs were starting to feel the burn when a lovely puppy suddenly came into my sight. The puppy was nobody but my neighbor grandma’s little dog. It seemed to have escaped from its yard. Its big, brown eyes sparkled with curiosity as it approached me, sniffing at my shoes and licking my hand, as if to say “jogging is fun, isn’t it?”. I couldn’t help but smile at the little bundle of joy, and I knelt down to pet it. “Who’s a good boy?” I asked, scratching behind its ears. The puppy responded with a happy yip and a lick to my cheek. I knew I couldn’t leave it alone on the street. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Eventually, we arrived at the yard. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2023—2024学年度下学期高一年级期末联考 英语 (试卷总分: 150分, 考试时间: 120分钟) 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? As nowadays people care about the environment more and more and tend to use green energy and electric cars, the batteries being used for such technology also need to be eco-friendly. The batteries are not easy to burn and two thirds of the battery can break down in the earth in just five months, leaving behind recyclable zinc. A The ability to produce electricity. A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Uncertain. 8. D 9. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: I knew I couldn’t leave it alone on the street. The little puppy seemed eager to follow me, its tail wagging with excitement. I decided to take it back to its owner, hoping that my neighbor grandma hadn’t noticed its absence yet. As we walked, the puppy kept jumping around, clearly enjoying the attention and the new adventure. I chuckled at its playful antics, feeling a warmth spread through me that was more than just the morning sun. Eventually, we arrived at the yard. The gate was slightly ajar, which explained how the puppy had managed to escape. I gently pushed it open and called out for the neighbor grandma, hoping she was nearby. Moments later, she appeared, a look of relief washing over her face as she saw her beloved pet safe and sound with me. She thanked me profusely, and I assured her it was no trouble at all. As I waved goodbye and started my journey back home, I felt a sense of satisfaction, knowing I had made a small but meaningful difference in someone’s day. 词汇激活 行为类 ①注意到:notice/spot ②咯咯地笑:chuckle/giggle ③出现:appear/turn up ④开始:start/begin 情绪类 ①兴奋:excitement/thrill ②满意:satisfaction/contentment/gratification 【点睛】[高分句型1] I decided to take it back to its owner, hoping that my neighbor grandma hadn’t noticed its absence yet.
