When Rony Rolando Herrera was a young boy, he was abandoned by his father, and his mother gave everything she had to raise Rony and his three brothers. Thankfully, Rony’s support did not end with his mother. Through a nonprofit, Rony was enrolled in a child protection program that redetermined his life path. Now, Rony is dedicated to doing the same for the children in his school.
Rony is a science teacher and director of a primary school in San Jose del Cacao, a rural community where hardship, tradition and poverty prevent education from being a priority. “The customs of these communities are from past civilizations and focus on working the land, not developing psychologically or intellectually,” Rony explained.
The barriers to education are most harmful to the most vulnerable, including young girls. As a teacher, it was not uncommon to see his female students, as young as 13 years old, drop out of school. “They are not empowered to know their rights or to continue with their education. They don’t know that they can change the failed system in their communities that believe women’s only purpose is to reproduce, do laundry and cook,” Rony said.
By joining the program PREVENIR, students at Rony’s school are given the opportunity to receive a more comprehensive education that aims to reduce the risks outside of the classroom. Rony elaborates that, “the educational process must be comprehensive. In addition to learning about things like science or biology, children need to know their rights and basic life skills.”
Rony calls himself a “dreamer” and now carries the love he received from both his mother and the humanitarian workers who supported him. He stated, “This type of support changes lives,” and added that even if out of 140 students, only one is impacted, he knows this impact will carry over to future generations, just as it did for him.
24.What really changed Rony’s life?
A.His miserable childhood. B.His joining in a program.
C.His living circumstances. D.His mother’s expectations.
25.What can we learn about San Jose del Cacao?
A.The people are intelligent.
B.Traditions are not well-received.
C.Education there is a priority.
D.People there live a conservative life.
26.Which can best describe Rony?
A.Reliable and determined. B.Humble and supportive.
C.Sympathetic and grateful. D.Generous and responsible.
27.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Education Provide Chances for Girls
B.A Teacher’s Big Dream Changes Lives
C.Nonprofits Play a Vital Role in Education
D.Protecting Children Requires Intervention

Jorg Muller, an ecologist at the University of Würzburg, with his colleagues, proposes a way to measure the biodiversity—listen to the jungle by AI, in a paper published in Nature Communications.
The rainforests are very important and always alive with the sounds of animals, which is useful to ecologists. When it comes to measuring the biodiversity of a piece of land, listening out for animal caller is more effective than uncovering the bushes looking for tracks and paw prints. The latter analysis method is time-consuming, and it requires an expert pair of ears. Muller’s idea was to apply the principle of smartphone apps which can identify the sounds of birds, bats and mammals to conservation work.
The researchers took recordings from across 43 sites in the rainforests. Some sites were relatively primitive, old-growth forests. Others were areas that had just been cleared for pasture(牧场) recently. And some other original forests had been cleared but then abandoned, allowing themselves to regrow. The various calls were identified by an expert, and then used to construct a list of the species present. As expected, the longer the land had been free from agricultural activity, the greater biodiversity it hosted. Then it was the computer’s turn. “We found that the AI tools could identify the sounds as well as the experts,” says Dr. Muller.
Of course, not everything in a rainforest makes a noise. Dr. Muller and his colleagues used light traps to catch night-flying insects, and DNA analysis to identify them. They found that the diversity of noisy animals was a reliable representative for the diversity of the quieter ones, too.
Besides measuring the biodiversity, the results are also expected to be applied to outside ecology departments. Under pressure from their customers, firms like L’Oreal, a make-up company, and Shell, an oil firm, have been spending money on forest restoration projects around the world. Dr. Muller hopes that an automated approach to checking on the results could help monitor such efforts, and give a standard way to measure whether they are working as well as their sponsors say.
28.Why does Muller propose to measure biodiversity with AI?
A.To make a new conservation principle.
B.To seek away fit for hot environments.
C.To work more efficiently than manpower
D.To study the rainforests more specifically.
29.How was the identification work of AI tools on the 43 sites?
A.It agreed with the work from experts..
B.It identified different types of raintarests.
C.It recorded more sounds in the abandoned forests.
D.It was used to restore the biodiversity for pasture.
30.What does the author indicate in paragraph 4?
A.DNA analysis is skeptical in the research.
B.Quiet animals are as diverse as noisy ones.
C.A rainforest is always full of various noises.
D.AI technology is used to catch the insects.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The research focuses on biodiversity only.
B.L’Oreal and Shell develop monitoring apps.
C.The research will assist in forest restoration.
D.AI’s help will attract some sponsors’investment.
D
Busy streets, loud noises, and grey buildings can make city life exhausting and boring. Finding a solution to these issues might be possible by turning to nature, which can help us feel calm and refreshed.
Adding vegetation or colorful designs may make cities more enjoyable to live in. However, growing plants or covering buildings in paint to test these approaches is costly and inconvenient. Moreover, studying these phenomena outdoors can be tricky, as many factors can affect the final results. “Measuring pleasure and motivation in natural settings is extremely hard,” explained Prof. Yvonne Delevoye. “Human reactions are sensitive to environmental changes, such as weather or traffic. Consequently, we used virtual reality to measure reactions to these factors in a virtual urban space.”
The group used virtual reality to make a city setting that felt real. They made two versions: one with no vegetation, and another with some green vegetation. They also introduced colorful patterns onto a path. Then they invited students to participate in the study. Wearing a VR headset and walking on the spot, the students spent time exploring the virtual environment. To find out where the volunteers were looking and for how long, each headset included an eye tracker.
The researchers found that the students walked more slowly when there was green vegetation present in the experiment, and their heart rate increased. They would spend less time looking at the ground and more time observing their surroundings. These results indicate a pleasurable experience. Bright color patterns alone did not have quite the same uplifting effect as the green vegetation, but they inspired interest and passion of the students and attracted their stare while increasing their heart rate.
Virtual reality might be a useful resource for urban planners, allowing them to experiment with different elements in a virtual environment. In the future, the researchers aim to improve the VR experience to get even better and more precise outcomes.
32.What was the primary reason for using virtual reality in the study?
A.To create an entertaining game for students.
B.To demonstrate the inconvenience of urban life.
C.To prove the superiority of technology over nature.
D.To measure reactions without environmental influence.
33.How did the participants interact with the virtual environment in the study?
A.By walking around a real city.
B.By making use of an eye tracker.
C.By wearing a headset and walking on site.
D.By observing through a screen without moving.
34.What does the underlined word “uplifting” most probably mean?
A.Powerful. B.Cheerful. C.Encouraging. D.Healing.
35.What potential benefit of virtual reality is mentioned for urban planning?
A.Reducing the costs of urban development significantly.
B.Providing a platform for testing various urban elements.
C.Predicting future urban challenges with precise results.
D.Helping cities avoid using real vegetation in urban space.

Challenges are part of life and something we can all expect to encounter at one point or another during our lifetime. We handle challenges differently;some of us choose to face them head-on, while others flee in uncertainty. 36 The following are simple methods and strategies we can all employ to overcome challenges more effectively.
37 Nike couldn’t have said it any better with their slogan, "Just do it! "Some challenges require us to do just that. Grab the bull by its horns and have the courage to conquer it, no matter how unsure we might feel. Some challenges are urgent and require immediate attention, leaving us with no option but to go ahead full-steam.
Educate ourselves. The reason why some issues prove challenging for us is that we aren’t familiar with them. 38 The internet, books, forums, etc. , offer platforms where we can research and learn about our challenges to find strategies against them. Knowledge is definitely powerful and essential in conquering anything.
Be persistent. This is what is required to accomplish anything, especially when it comes to overcoming challenges. No matter how difficult our challenges might be, we must be willing to push through and try again and again until we achieve victory over them. 39
Ask for help. There are times when we can’t go it alone and need others to help us conquer whatever challenges we face. 40 Networking with like-minded individuals who can offer us support, suggestions, and solutions is useful in helping us overcome challenges.
A.Meet them head-on.
B.Adapt a different strategy.
C.It is said that two heads are better than one.
D.If we give up, we allow the challenges to conquer us instead.
E.Therefore, our knowledge and ability to conquer them is limited.
F.Whatever our positions, we all wish to conquer them and move on.
G.Some challenges can be overwhelming, making us question our ability to overcome them.

I stood in the door of our flower shop, watching the staff work on arrangements and talk with customers. Among the employees was Emily, my 25-year-old daughter. Together, my friend Colleen and I had truly created an amazing space.
I first met Colleen 15 years ago, at an event for the Chester County Down Syndrome (唐氏综合症) Interest Group, right after her daughter, Katie, was born. The group helped other families like ours navigate the life of having a child with Down syndrome. “It’s such a challenge to help our daughters find jobs,” I said to Colleen one day. She agreed. When we learned that only 20 percent of adults with special needs have jobs that pay a typical wage, we were determined to make a difference. And not just for Emily and Katie.
In January 2021, we were approached by an organization that owned a flower shop, hoping we could use it to further our goal. It was a dream come true. We created the Kati Mac Education Foundation and reopened the shop as a nonprofit. Ten out of our 14 employees have special needs. Colleen and I spent days planning, ensuring that our shop was a learning space for our employees. We provided them with the training they needed, not just in floristry (花艺) but in essential life skills — communication, money management, and customer service. Our dream was slowly turning into reality, with Emily and Katie leading the charge.
As I watched the busy flower shop around me, I listened to the spirit-lifting playlist Emily had picked out herself. She greeted customers and answered their questions, while Katie worked with her mom to create a wonderful arrangement for a customer’s special occasion. The aroma (芳香) of roses, peonies and lilies was heavenly, but it was our employees who made the flower shop a place for angels.

W: They do?

W: Ritchie Valens is one of the most famous American rock and roll musicians from the 1950s. He was born in Los Angeles, California, to Mexican parents. When he was little, he taught himself to play the guitar, which he played for many years later. He was originally left-handed but taught himself to play with his right.
He also learned two other instruments. In 1958, someone heard his song Donna and helped him make his first record. One song, La Bamba became an instant hit and is still considered one of the greatest songs of all time. Sadly, on February 3, 1959, Ritchie Valens died in a plane crash along with two other famous musicians, Buddy Holly and J.P Richardson. After a concert, some of the musicians decided to fly home. Unfortunately, there was only one small plane and not everyone could fit. J.P Richardson was given a seat because he was sick. Ritchie Valens won a game with another musician. And Buddy Holly knew the pilot. That day is now remembered as “The Day the Music Died”. Another musician named Don Maclean wrote a beautiful song for them called “American Pie”.

根据文章第二段“Rony is a science teacher and director of a primary school in San Jose del Cacao, a rural community where hardship, tradition and poverty prevent education from being a priority. “The customs of these communities are from past civilizations and focus on working the land, not developing psychologically or intellectually,” Rony explained.(Rony是San Jose del Cacao的一名科学教师和一所小学的主任,在这个农村社区,艰苦、传统和贫困阻碍了教育成为优先考虑的事情。Rony解释说:“这些社区的习俗来自过去的文明,专注于耕种土地,而不是心理或智力的发展。”)”可推知,San Jose del Cacao的人们仍然过着保守的生活。故选D。
26.推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Through a nonprofit, Rony was enrolled in a child protection program that redetermined his life path. Now, Rony is dedicated to doing the same for the children in his school.(通过一个非营利组织,罗尼参加了一个儿童保护项目,这重新决定了他的人生道路。
根据文章第一段“Through a nonprofit, Rony was enrolled in a child protection program that redetermined his life path. Now, Rony is dedicated to doing the same for the children in his school.(通过一个非营利组织,罗尼参加了一个儿童保护项目,这重新决定了他的人生道路。

根据第二段中“When it comes to measuring the biodiversity of a piece of land, listening out for animal caller is more effective than uncovering the bushes looking for tracks and paw prints. The latter analysis method is time-consuming, and it requires an expert pair of ears.”(在测量一块土地的生物多样性时,倾听动物的叫声比揭开灌木丛寻找足迹和爪印更有效。
根据第三段中““We found that the AI tools could identify the sounds as well as the experts,” says Dr. Muller.”(“我们发现人工智能工具可以像专家一样识别声音,”穆勒博士说。) 故选A项。
根据第四段中“They found that the diversity of noisy animals was a reliable representative for the diversity of the quieter ones, too.”(他们发现,嘈杂动物的多样性也是安静动物多样性的可靠代表。)
Muller hopes that an automated approach to checking on the results could help monitor such efforts, and give a standard way to measure whether they are working as well as their sponsors say.”(穆勒博士希望一种自动检查结果的方法可以帮助监督这些努力,并提供一种标准方法来衡量它们是否像赞助商所说的那样有效。)

根据第二段中“Human reactions are sensitive to environmental changes, such as weather or traffic. Consequently, we used virtual reality to measure reactions to these factors in a virtual urban space(人类的反应对环境变化很敏感,比如天气或交通。因此,我们使用虚拟现实来测量在虚拟城市空间中对这些因素的反应)”可知,研究中使用虚拟现实的主要原因是想要在不受环境因素影响的情况下测量人们的反应,故选D。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Wearing a VR headset and walking on the spot, the students spent time exploring the virtual environment(学生们戴着VR头盔并且在原地走动,花时间探索虚拟环境)”可知,这说明参与者是通过戴头盔和在现场走动来与虚拟环境进行互动的,故选C。
根据第四段中划线词前文“The researchers found that the students walked more slowly when there was green vegetation present in the experiment, and their heart rate increased. They would spend less time looking at the ground and more time observing their surroundings. These results indicate a pleasurable experience(研究人员发现,当实验中有绿色植被时,学生们走得更慢,他们的心率也会增加。他们会花更少的时间观察地面,而花更多的时间观察周围的环境。这些结果表明这是一次愉快的经历)”可知,研究结果表明,环境当中的绿色植被让人们感到愉快。划线词所在句“Bright color patterns alone did not have quite the same uplifting effect as the green vegetation, but they inspired interest and passion of the students and attracted their stare while increasing their heart rate.(明亮的色彩图案本身并没有绿色植被那么uplifting的效果,但它们激发了学生们的兴趣和激情,吸引了他们的目光,同时增加了他们的心率。)”
根据最后一段“Virtual reality might be a useful resource for urban planners, allowing them to experiment with different elements in a virtual environment(虚拟现实可能是城市规划者的有用资源,使他们在虚拟环境中尝试不同的元素)”可知,虚拟现实为城市规划提供了一个测试各种城市元素的平台,故选B。

36.根据上文“We handle challenges differently; some of us choose to face them head-on, while others flee in uncertainty.”(我们应对挑战的方式各有不同;我们中的一些人选择拥抱并正面面对它们,而另一些人则在不确定中逃离。)根据下文“The following are simple methods and strategies we can all employ to overcome challenges more effectively.”(下面是一些简单的方法和策略,我们都可以用来更有效地克服挑战。)
37.根据下文“Nike couldn’t have said it any better with their slogan, “Just do it!” Some challenges require us to do just that. Grab the bull by its horns and have the courage to conquer it, no matter how unsure we might feel. 38.根据上文“The reason why some issues prove challenging for us is that we aren’t familiar with them.”(有些问题对我们来说具有挑战性的原因是我们不熟悉它们。)空处承接上文说明不熟悉导致的结果。故E选项“因此,我们征服它们的知识和能力是有限的”切题。此处them与上一句呼应。故选E项。
39.根据上文“No matter how difficult our challenges might be, we must be willing to push through and try again and again until we achieve victory over them.”(无论挑战有多么困难,我们都必须愿意坚持下去,一次又一次地尝试,直到取得胜利。)
40.根据上文“There are times when we can’t go it alone and need others to help us conquer whatever challenges we face.”(有时我们无法独自应对,需要他人来帮助我们克服所面临的任何挑战。)

故填were removed。
故填to bring。
分析句子成分可知,该空用非谓语动词,动词launch与其逻辑主语a cultural brand存在动宾关系,故此处用所给动词的过去分词;launched by Banbidian and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2019是过去分词短语作后置定语。故填launched。

Suddenly, the bell above the door rang, announcing a new arrival. A woman stepped in, holding a small piece of paper in her hand. Emily approached her with a welcoming smile. “How can I help you?” she asked. The woman looked around, her eyes widening slightly, before she handed Emily the paper. It was a list of flowers. She explained that she wanted to create a bouquet for her daughter, who was graduating and moving to a new city. Touched, Emily, with her natural compassion, suggested flowers that symbolized new beginnings and good luck.
Watching them talk, I couldn’t help but reflect on the journey that brought us here. This moment proved what Colleen and I aimed for — not only to provide employment but also to cultivate an environment where our employees could make meaningful contributions, connecting with customers on a personal level. The woman left the shop with a custom bouquet, her face beaming with gratitude. Watching her leave, a sense of pride swelled within me. Our little flower shop served not just as a commercial venture but also as a guiding light for the community, symbolizing the remarkable outcomes achievable through determination and sympathy.
