On warm September night, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, soft sea winds filled the air. The moon was full. Mira could feel the energy in the air. She loved everything about the ocean, and this evening she had come down to the beach to enjoy the salty night air and hear the waves washing over the sand gently.
Mira closed her eyes and listened to the waves. The gentle rolling sound was calming. Suddenly, Mira could hear another sound, too. She listened carefully. The sound was so soft that she could barely hear it. She opened her eyes and looked down at the sand. It was moving! All of a sudden, she could see a tiny head coming out. Then, she saw four tiny feet and a shell. A turtle had emerged!
Mira looked in amazement at the baby turtle. In the moonlight she could just make out the green and brown pattern on its shell. It was so small! She watched with wonder as other baby turtles began to emerge. One by one they struggled out of their underground nests. Soon the beach was like a moving carpet of tiny turtles.
Mira knew the turtles should head towards the waves and swim away, so she was puzzled when they began to pull themselves in the opposite direction. Why would the turtles be going away from the ocean?
Suddenly, she remembered something she had heard from some people living here. “Loggerhead sea turtles come back here every year in April. They bury their eggs on the beach and in the first week of September those baby turtles hatch and head back down to the sea. But some of them never make it. Sometimes they die going across the beach, trying to find those bright lights in the houses. The lights confuse the sea turtles.”

The neighborhood kids nicknamed the strange old couple Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose. Rumor was that they sat inside and drank tea all day. The only words we ever heard from them were “Keep out of our rosebushes!”
Our house was situated just a stone’s throw away from theirs, separated by a stretch of land covered in the most vibrant rosebushes. The rosebushes served as a fence between our house and theirs. I was eleven at the time and the oldest of six active girls. Despite the warnings, my sisters and I would often find ourselves drawn to the allure of mischief. We should have played our softball games elsewhere to avoid hurting the roses, far from the reach of Jack and Ruby’s watchful eyes, but we secretly delighted in annoying Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose.
The day of the incident was like any other, filled with the laughter and energy of youth. Mary was trying to catch a fly ball. She stumbled (绊倒) over one of Ruby Rednose’s rosebushes and fell on top of several more. Just at that moment, Ruby Rednose emerged. Her voice, usually reserved, now echoed through the yard, laden with pain and fury, “Look at what you’ve done to our roses! You’ve always been a trouble. You have no idea what this rosebush means to me!”
Scared to death, my sisters and I quickly ran back into our house. Breathlessly, I told Mom what had happened. Mom responded with a mixture of anger and disappointment, “Girls, how many times have I told you not to play softball near those bushes? Come and help me fix them right now, ” she commanded. “Mom, we thought you didn’t like the couple, we protested. “They’re mean to us.” Mom rushed out of the house without saying a word. Out we rushed immediately to follow her to help repair the rose fence. While Mom was examining the damaged roses, Ruby slowly walked closer. She looked sad. And it wasn’t her nose that was red-it was her eyes.

My name is Maeja, and it is my job to watch my younger brother, Jungho, as we walk home from school.
“I’m tired,” Jungho complained one day on our way home, “and hungry.” So we stopped to rest. “What do you think Mom is cooking?” I asked. “Barbecue for me!” said Jungho. “Come on.” I stood up. “We need to keep walking.”
At a busy corner, I noticed a street banner(横幅标语)flapping high above. It read, “First Annual Walking Race to Jasan Park! Climb the Mountain to Win a Washing Machine!”
It might be fun to race. I walked to and from school with Jungho every day, and I had hiked with Daddy in Jasan Park. But could I walk fast enough to win?
At home, Mom was working in the kitchen. We had only a single burner stove, so she made rice first. Then she cooked vegetables and fish. When Daddy arrived, everyone ate and talked and shared about their day.
Afterward, Mom and I washed dishes. When she pulled out two metal laundry tubs, her smile disappeared. I knew doing laundry hurt her back and knees. In our neighborhood, only a few families have a washing machine. Mom said a washing machine would be a gift from above. I remembered the banner and told Mom about it.
She sighed, “Maeja, many people will enter that race. You cannot expect to win.”
We carried wet laundry to the flat roof, where Mom hung it to dry. I loved being on the roof with her, but I wished we hadn’t got so many chores. Then I would have had more time to play with friends. If we had a washing machine, both Mom and I would be happy. So I signed up to participate in that race.

For 8-year-old Perryn Miller and his family from Holly Ridge, North Carolina, Christmas was anything but relaxing. Their troubles were far more depressing than the regular holiday headaches. Earlier last year, the Millers lost their home to Hurricane Florence. They’ve been staying in a small house ever since.
Last December, the family travelled to Utah to visit their relatives, where they were hoping for a brief break. That was when Perryn started experiencing headaches. His parents, Jacob and Jaimee, received shocking news that their little boy had cancer after a trip to the emergency room. Doctors diagnosed Perryn with glioblastoma multiforme, a rare and aggressive form of brain disease. The family has remained in Utah ever since, so Perryn can go through chemotherapy and radiation at Primary Children’s Hospital. He’s already proved what a little fighter he is by making it through surgery.
His parents are obviously heartbroken, but they say they’re also moved by the outpouring of support they’ve received. Just over two weeks after creating a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Perryn’s medical expenses, they’ve already received nearly $50,000.
For Perryn, though, there was one thing missing in his recovery: the comforting presence of his dog, Frank. Perryn has a deep bond with Frank. Every afternoon, Frank would go to the side of the road to wait for Perryn who would come home on the school bus. However, the 8-month-old German dog had been left behind in North Carolina while they were visiting their relatives in Utah, and it was being looked after by their neighbor. It is 2,300 miles from Holly Ridge, North Carolina to the house of Perryn’s relatives. Under normal circumstances, it takes 52 hours to drive to get to the Primary Children’s Hospital. Perryn’s story quickly spread on social media, where it caught the eye of a former truck driver, Bob Reynolds, who was a stranger to the Millers at that time.

I was nearly twenty-two, about to graduate, and unsure which to follow—my head and my long interest in natural science, or my heart and my passion for photography. A job at the museum would be the safe choice. Or I could try to pursue a career in architectural photography, even though I had no specific training in the field. I longed to land that job.
I asked the advisor, John Smith, to recommend someone qualified to give mean objective opinion. His reply: “See Benjamin Moskowitz, a famous architect, NYC. Good luck.”
During the Spring break I booked a cheap room and took the train to New York City. At his office on the twenty-third floor I asked the receptionist for Mr. Moskowitz. “I think Mr. Moskowitz has already left, Miss. I know he was planning a long weekend. Did you have an appointment?”...
She sighed and asked my name and told me to wait while she tried to see if he might still be there. I paced nervously, thinking that my time and money and my best chance for an expert opinion had been thrown away. The receptionist rang his office; no answer. “Sorry, but it looks like you’re out of luck, Miss White,” she said.
Why hadn’t I planned this better? Called for an appointment? Taken an earlier train? How could I have made such a mistake? I was close to tears.
Just then at all, gray-haired man, beautifully dressed, strode (阔步) through the reception area. The receptionist signaled me and mouthed, “That’s him.” I didn’t hesitate. “Oh, Mr. Moskowitz!” I called out. “Just a moment, sir, please! I’d like to speak to you.”
He glanced at his expensive-looking gold watch and kept walking. “Sorry, I have a train to catch,” he said straightforward, “I don’t believe you had an appointment.” I hurried after him toward the elevator. “I apologize, sir, but I was told to talk to you and to show you some photographs.”

My 16-year-old son, Jacob, is the center of my universe. He’s always been a kind, bright, and generally well-behaved child. So, you can imagine my shock and heartbreak when, a few weeks ago, I faced every parent’s nightmare.
It started when I received a call from Jacob’s school. His teacher, Mrs. Henderson, who’s been teaching for over 25 years, sounded upset. She informed me that Jacob was involved in an incident—he had been laughing at a classmate, Andy, for his poor background and worn-out clothes. I was shocked. This behavior was so unlike the son I thought I knew.
I spent that night thinking of how to address this. I knew I had to teach Jacob a lesson, one that he wouldn’t easily forget, one that would help him develop empathy and understanding towards others, regardless of their financial status.
The next morning, I sat Jacob down for a serious talk. I explained how-his actions were hurtful and unacceptable. He seemed regretful, but I knew words alone wouldn’t be enough. So, I decided to take a severe step.
I took away all of his prized possessions: his laptop, designer clothes, and other luxuries. I explained to him that if he wanted them back, he’d have to earn them. My intention was not just to punish him but to teach him the value of hard work, money, and, most importantly, to understand the struggles of his classmate.
Jacob’s reaction was as expected. My action angered him. He couldn’t believe I would do something like this. But as days passed, his anger gave way to understanding. He started a part-time job at a local grocery store. The work was hard and tiring. During this period, Jacob began to change. He learned how challenging it can be to earn money and the effort it takes to afford even the basic luxuries of life.

Javon was the shortest kid in the class. He’d had to ask to get his gym locker changed so that he didn’t have to strain (拉紧) so much to reach it. But he didn’t care about his height? Either he would grow or he wouldn’t — there was nothing he could do about it, so why let it bother him?
That was Javon’s attitude about most things. He didn’t like to get all worked up about stuff, especially stuff he had no control over.
The one exception was school work. Javon had worked hard. He was one of the top kids in the class. He was still the shortest, but now he also got called one of the smartest.
For Javon, math used to be easy. He figured that since he had ten fingers, he could do most of it. However, when Mr. T started a new unit and threw letters into his math problem, Javon could not wrap his mind around using these letters. Although Mr. T explained over and over again, he still didn’t understand. Soon the day when the class had to take the chapter test arrived. The test was brutal (残酷的).
Hard as Javon tried, he hadn’t finished all of the problems: The day came when the class finally got their papers back. D.64%. Written in red ink on the corner of Javon’s paper. The worst grade he had ever got. In the seat next to him, Tyler got a red 72% on Tyler’s paper. Javon was surprised that Tyler, who is dyslexic (阅读障碍), got a higher grade than him.
“How did you get such a grade?” asked Javon. “I get extra time on tests. Because of my —” Tyler said. “You got extra time?” Javon cried out.
At this point, Mr. T appeared at the corner. Javon walked up to him and said, “Mr. T, why Tyler could get extra time for this test? Plenty of people didn’t finish, including me. It’s unfair!”

Another Way
The train ran smoothly on a spring afternoon. At one station, the doors opened, and came in a man. He wore laborer’s clothing, big, drunk and dirty. Screaming, he swung at an elderly couple. Terrified, the couple jumped up and quickly walked away. The laborer aimed a kick at the back of the old woman but missed. The passengers froze with fear.
I’ve been putting in a solid eight hours of martial arts (武术) training nearly every day for the past three years. “We study how to resolve conflict, not how to start it,” my teacher had said again and again. I listened to his words. In my heart, however, I wanted to save the innocent by destroying the guilty.
“This is it!” I said to myself as I got to my feet. Seeing me stand up, the drunk recognized a chance to focus his rage (怒火). His fists upraised, he gathered himself for a rush at me. A second before he could move, someone shouted “Hey!”
I remembered the strangely joyous quality of the voice. We both stared down at a little old man. “Come here and talk with me,” the old man said in an easy voice. He waved his hands lightly. The big man followed, as if on a string. He planted his feet in front of the old gentleman, “Why should I talk to you?” The old man continued, “What have you been drinking?” “Beer,” the laborer replied, “and it’s none of your business!”
“Oh, that’s wonderful,” the old man said with interest. “You see, I love beer, too. Every night, my wife and I take beer out into the garden, and we sit on an old wooden bench. We look to see how our persimmon (柿子) tree is doing. We worry about whether it will recover from those ice storms we had last winter. Our tree has done better than I expected, though, especially when you consider the poor quality of the soil.”

I was doing homework with my friend Ollie at his home when he randomly started scribbling (乱画) a fish. But not just any fish. This fish was riding a skateboard and blowing a bubble that said “I’d rather be skating!”I laughed and drew a sea star saying “Quit fooling around and get to work!”
Just then, Ollie’s grandma Abuela and her friend Mr. Goldberg came into the kitchen. Mr. Goldberg was in charge of the local animal shelter. Abuela poured their tea and inquired about how things were going at the animal shelter. Mr. Goldberg sighed, shaking his head. He explained that not enough people were adopting pets, resulting in too many animals without homes.
Overhearing the conversation, Ollie offered to adopt some excitedly. But Abuela said that one noisy parrot was plenty for this house.
“Blue isn’t noisy,” defended Ollie. “He’s just musical.”
“I’d have a whole farm full of animals if I could,” I said. “But my parents say two cats and a hamster (仓鼠) are enough.”
Mr. Goldberg said he kept trying to attract people to adopt animals, but found it hard to get people’s attention these days. Ollie drew a sad whale, and I wrote the words “Please adopt me” in the shape of a whale spout (喷水). Mr. Goldberg took a look at our drawings and made favorable comments on them, saying that these clever talking animals just might grab people’s attention. And he asked us if we were willing to design a poster for his animal shelter, a proposal we happily accepted. We decided to draw some ideas on our own and meet up again the next afternoon.
That night, when I was sitting in the living room brainstorming ideas for the poster, my little brother brought in our hamster, Mr. Nibbles, to give him a little run-around time. He made a hamster playground out of couch pillows and Mr. Nibbles began to run around merrily.
Suddenly, an idea formed in my mind.

It was a heartbreaking moment when my husband Bruce passed away in the late fall. Then deciding what to do with his garden was way down on the list of necessary tasks. During the first few months, I cried with our family, planned a memorial, celebrated a quiet Thanksgiving, and panicked over not having bought Christmas presents.
As the new year began, the often rainy days and long nights deepened my sorrow. I found myself exhausted at the end of February, both physically and mentally. Then the daffodils (水仙花) came out in the garden.
Years before, Bruce had planted dozens of these lemon-yellow flowers. To him, they served as a reminder of hope, a promise that light and warmth would soon replace cold and dark. Looking at those daffodils, I thought about how Bruce had considered our garden a living work of art, carefully choosing plants so we’d see new blooms every month.
Then I noticed all the weeds that had taken root and spread everywhere. The neglect (疏于打理) showed, for Bruce’s illness had lasted a couple of years, a time when he didn’t have energy for yard work the way he had before.
Faced with the neglected garden, I felt at a loss how to deal with the garden in the beginning. My daughter suggested I hire a person to clean and tidy everything up. I didn’t respond.
Every time I sat in the garden alone, the memories of the lively garden came flooding, like the numerous scenes in an unforgettable film. I was reminded of so many days when Bruce came home from work, put on old clothes, and headed out of the door to mow or prune (修剪). Orange dragonflies followed him around the yard as he worked. Honeybees buzzed among the flowers, birds sang beautiful songs, and gentle breezes carried the sweet smell of earth. No matter how cold or wet it was, the fresh air and physical activity made him energized and refreshed. For Bruce, the work was quiet and comforting, which was a relief, as well as a pleasure.

With a knee in need of replacement, Cindy Tutko was facing a long and challenging trek (跋涉) through the Atlanta airport while heading home to Florida about a month ago. She had just left Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after visiting her son, Jamie, and his family. She arrived at Terminal C in Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest, and needed to get to Terminal F for her next flight. But the trains were down.
So, she started walking.
“She had actually fallen that day.” said Jamie. “And she, like, put herself into tears with how much pain her knee was in. When I was taking her to the airport, I could tell she was hurting.”
“I had a big, heavy suitcase that I was carrying, and that’s what was weighing me down.” she said. “It was full and heavy, very heavy.”
Michael Wright, who happened to be from Lafayette, Louisiana, spotted Cindy limping (跛行) along. When he initially offered to help her, Cindy declined, saying. — Oh, no, no. I’m good.” But Michael wasn’t going to take no for an answer. He grabbed her suitcase, put it on, and said. “Let’s go.”
“Within seconds really, I realized he was genuinely being nice.” Cindy said. “He was just a nice guy. He was helping me out.” For 55 minutes. Michael carried Cindy’s bag and walked right alongside her, through Terminals C, D, E, all the way to F.
“Right before we got to the gate, he seized my hand, looked at me and said. ‘You looked like my mum,’” Cindy recalled and she responded with a hug and a little kiss on his cheek, telling him, “Your mum would be proud of you.”
Cindy texted her son to tell him all about that “nice guy” from Lafayette. Jamie immediately turned to social media asking for help finding him.

July 1971, I was taking a summer class in Black-American literature on the campus of SUNY Oneonta in northern New York. Professor James walked into the classroom and announced that he had invited a special guest to class, but his guest was delayed. The class stirred with curiosity and anticipation.
“Who’s coming?” someone asked.
“All I will tell you is that he is the author of one of the books you have read for this class,” he said. “I need a volunteer to meet him in the hall of the administration building and take him here.”
To my amazement, my right hand shot up as though it had a mind of its own. “What am I doing?” I thought. I never volunteered for anything. I was shy and uncomfortable meeting new people. In fact, I was absolutely the wrong person for this job. Realizing my mistake, I pulled my hand down quickly, but it was too late.
“Thank you, David,” Professor James said. “You’d better leave now. He’ll be arriving any minute.”
Seeing no way to back out, I reluctantly got out of my seat and headed for the classroom door. When I reached it, I stopped.
“Umm,” I said. “If I don’t know who this person is, how will I recognize him? I’d hate to bring back the wrong guy.”
Professor James laughed. “Good point,” he said. He pulled me aside and whispered a name in my ear. “Alex Haley,” he said.
“Really?” I said. I gave a thumbs-up to the class and left the room.
As I entered the empty hallway, I criticized myself for volunteering. “Why didn’t you let someone else do this?” Alex Haley was the author of The Autobiography (自传) of Malcolm X. He was also famous for his diligence, perseverance and in-depth thinking.
As I walked across the campus, my anxiety grew. I feared that I was about to embarrass myself in front of this famous gentleman by asking stupid questions, or worse, accompanying him in painful silence. I reached the front steps and climbed them slowly.

Seven-year-old Maggie was a grade-one pupil. She often spent her free time socializing with the seniors at a local retirement facility. In general, she would talk about puzzles, ice cream bars, and everything under the sun with the seniors. But most particularly, Maggie read to them, which she called her sweet mission. Once or twice a week, the little girl put a few books in her backpack and got ready to visit the elderly at the facility.
This sweet mission began on a snowy day. Maggie’s mom, Tiffany Kuznia, worked at the retirement facility and often brought her daughter with her to work. As little Maggie was packing her bag, Kuznia reminded her to bring her Nintendo Switch so she would not get bored. Maggie quickly replied that she had different plans for the day. “I’m going to bring books and I’m going to read to the residents ,” she declared.
On arrival, the girl knocked on every door of the facility to offer her services. That day, she made a good start. Patti Griggs, a retired elementary school teacher, was astonished by her reading talent. “She’s such a good little reader. I taught first-grade kids how to read. There were very few children who could come in and read like that,” said Griggs.
With time, Maggie became so beloved among the residents that she even had “regulars” she read to every week. She often visited each one for over an hour. Her mom checked on her regularly to make sure she wasn’t overstaying her welcome. Much to Maggie’s delight , the residents were more than happy to have her with them for an extended period of time. They were always ready to help her out when she struggled with new words. Such hiccups (小问题) happened less and less and Maggie grew more confident of reading aloud.
Two months later, Maggie realized that her companions had different hobbies and interests. And their educational levels varied from person to person. It was high time that she should make some changes.

The Secret
“Your secret is safe with me” was Ming’s promise when I told him that I wanted to learn ballet, which was unusual for boys and must be laughed at by most people in my place. I even dared not tell my parents about it.
Ming was my best friend at school. Wearing the same type of school uniform, Ming looked older and bigger, but we were the same age. We grew up together in the same neighbourhood and our parents knew each other well. Ming was always the first one to hear stories from me. I trusted him on everything and anything. One afternoon after school, we met at the balance bars on the school playground as usual. It was just the two of us. I gathered up courage and told him about my secret.
Ming seemed slightly surprised, but he soon smiled and agreed to keep it a secret for me, as he had done other times. We were best friends after all. After a few push-ups, we headed for our own homes.
The next morning, in the school corridor, just as I was about to wave at him and say hi, I noticed something was different. As soon as he saw me, he dropped his head and continued to walk on, avoiding eye contact with me. In the classroom, I couldn’t help casting frequent glimpses at his side—he wasn’t looking at me. In fact, he remained quiet all day. When the school bell rang, he picked up his schoolbag and left the classroom in a rush. Was it because of my secret? What did he do to my secret?
I ate very little that evening. Mum frowned when she saw the food I’d left in the bowl. Dad threw me a disapproving look and asked me how my day was. “It was OK,” I replied, “lots of homework to do.” I stood up, ready to leave the table.

Eight-year-old Evan stood by the sidewalk watching as Mrs. Carter opened her flower shop. He felt relieved that the shop hadn’t closed forever. Two days ago, when he passed by, there was a closed sign on the door and a note saying Mrs. Carter was sick. Evan was worried that he would never be able to get his “dream job” if the shop remained closed for too long.
Mrs. Carter, an 85-year-old woman, spotted Evan looking in her shop’s direction and waved hello to him. Excitedly, Evan ran up to her and expressed his desire to work at the shop. Mrs.Carter laughed quietly, finding it amusing that an eight-year-old wanted a job. Evan confidently explained that since his dad passed away, he had learned how to do various tasks, like taking out the rubbish, making sandwiches, and assisting his mom, Stacey, with groceries. He didn’t want any payment for his work; instead, he simply wanted a bouquet (花束) for his mom’ s upcoming birthday. He believed in working hard for what he wanted, just as his mom had taught him.
Impressed by Evan’s determination, Mrs. Carter agreed to hire him. She asked if he knew how to tie ribbons around flowers, and when she heard Evan’s affirmative(肯定的) response, they got down to making bouquets. Evan was excited to assist Mrs. Carter every evening for a whole week, and his presence brought joy to her boring work.Customers found Evan adorable and entertaining, which resulted in increased flower purchases and booming business for Mrs. Carter.
On Evan’s last day, Mrs.Carter felt emotional. Their bond had grown strong, and she saw him as a grandchild. As she prepared a splendid bouquet for Evan’s mother, tears welled up in her eyes. She invited him to visit her shop in the future, and Evan promised to tell his mom about her.

I have been blessed by many act s of kindness throughout my life. But the one that stands out the most was the one that happened at the blacksmith (铁匠) shop at Old Sturbridge Village.
When my son was little, it was very clear to me that there was something different about him. After countless trips to different specialists and the completion of extensive testing, a diagnosis of a particular chromosomal (染色体的) disorder was made. He was constantly in motion and had no sense of danger, requiring his caregivers watch his every move to prevent him from running away or heading into traffic. He also loved strangers, thinking that everyone was his potential best friend. He greeted everyone with a hug.
However, no one was willing to accept my son’s well-intended embrace, especially given that he looked much older than his actual age yet acted much younger. Although my son was still too young to recognize when he was being rejected, every hurtful word, unkind refusal, or look of pity broke my heart. I had started to be afraid of taking him out in public.
One day, at the village, I walked around holding my son’s hand, ready to protect him from being hurt. As we strolled along, we passed by a blacksmith shop. The rhythmic pounding of the hammer and the sparks that flew in all directions caught my son’s attention. The process of turning seemingly worthless materials into valuable and visually stunning pieces through heating, hammering, and forging (锻造) seemed like magic to him. As the blacksmith paused his work and wiped the sweat from his brow, my son couldn’t contain his curiosity anymore.
He ran straight over to the blacksmith, wrapped his arms around the man’s legs, and asked if he could have a try. My heart stopped at that moment.
I expected that he, like almost everyone else that we had encountered, would push him away, muttering something about this not being possible.

Normally, Levi greeted the bus driver, Larry Farrish, with his usual cheerful smile and a warm wave. He was always the first to board the bus, excited to start the day ahead with his friends. However, on this particular day, Levi’s behaviour was strikingly different.
As the bus came to the scheduled station, Levi slowly made his way onto the vehicle, his head bowed and his steps heavy. Farrish, who had come to expect Levi’s bright smile and enthusiastic greeting, couldn’t help but notice the change in the boy’s manner. He watched as Levi took his usual seat at the back of the bus, his shoulders sunk and his eyes fixed on the floor.
Farrish, a kind and considerate man, couldn’t bear to see Levi’s sadness. As he drove the bus through the familiar route, he considered what could be causing the boy's sufferings. He knew that Levi was a happy and outgoing child, so the sudden change was puzzling. He felt it a must to figure out the source of the little boy’s depression.
As the bus neared Levi’s school, Farrish turned around in his seat, gently called Levi out and inquired about what was wrong. The boy looked up, his eyes red and swollen from crying. Levi hesitated for a moment, and then whispered in a quiet voice, “I forgot my pajamas for Pajama (睡衣) Day.” Farrish’s heart sank. He knew how much Levi had been looking forward to Pajama Day, a special event at his school where students could come dressed in their comfortable pajamas and enjoy a relaxing atmosphere. It was a day that Levi had talked about for weeks, eagerly anticipating the opportunity to show off his pajamas.
Now, however, his excitement had turned into disappointment. He had simply forgotten to pack his pajamas, and as a result, he would be unable to participate in the festivities. Farrish could see sadness stand on Levi’s face, and he knew that he had to do something to help relieve the boy’s pain.

Whenever I spread marmalade (橘子酱), I am reminded of my mother, a five-foot-tall angel who even befriended a skunk (臭鼬).
One day, while she was busy picking beans in the backyard, she came across a skunk no more than a meter away. The skunk’s embarrassment was evident as he had undoubtedly been rummaging (乱翻) through the garbage. He still had a marmalade jar stuck on his nose. Mom took pity on him. Instead of worrying the creature would spray something smelly all over her and the beans, she smiled compassionately at the little thing and extended a helping hand. Kneeling on the ground, she inched across the grass, reached out, and twisted the jar—very carefully.
The jar slipped off. The skunk nodded a thank-you before slipping away into the woods at the back of the garden. Obviously, there was no spraying incident, thanks to my remarkable mother. She repeated this tale numerous times, always calling the skunk Marmalade. However, that was not the end of the story. Three summers later, when I was about twelve, another encounter occurred.
It was a rainy morning, and both my mother and father had gone to work. My friend Rob came over to play, and we decided to run the electric train in my room. Suddenly, a scratching sound emerged from the attic (阁楼). Rob assumed that it might be some kind of animal. Curiosity got the better of us, and we ventured towards the source of the sound.
I cautiously opened the attic door in the hall. The noise ceased abruptly. I climbed up the stairs, Rob following my lead. There behind the toy box near the chimney stood the animal—black with a distinct white stripe down his back. Was he scared and trembling? I believe so, at least that’s what I remember. Instinctively, I retreated, fearing the potential spray or bites from the creature. “Hey, Rob,” I whispered urgently, “It’s a skunk. Let’s go to the kitchen and figure out a way to get him out of here.”

When I woke up, I felt pains all over. A pool of sticky blood surrounded my head. I lay trapped in the bottom of n smooth-walled pit (坑) with an empty water bottle.
I thought of what had happened. I was climbing down the mountain as I was admiring the beautiful scenery. Accidentally. I stepped on a loose rock. Then I slipped, fell with the rock and got stuck somewhere below the top. It was getting dark in the pit. Only my mother knew where I’d gone. I promised to have lunch with her. Thinking of this. I took my phone out and dialed her number with shaking fingers. No service. The silence, which earlier I’d valued, was now horrible.
With a sharp pain in my head, I was terrified. I knew I’d fallen far, but I wasn’t sure where I was. I called 911 because I knew by the pain that my back was severely injured, if not broken. My ear was torn badly. There was still no service. I dug through my bag to assess my supplies and found a whistle and some wipes.
I put the whistle around my neck and blew, though I knew no one would hear me. It was 1:15 pm and I was miles from the town where I lived. I used the wipes to clean off as much blood as I could. I rested. Then I screamed, blew my whistle, and let myself think the unthinkable. What if they can’t find me? What if this is it?
I decided to get moving. I climbed through a small opening, but when I peered over the next edge, my heart sank: there was a 30-foot drop. There was no way down. I was trapped.
I knew with that extreme Arizona heat in the day and bitter desert cold at night, I wouldn’t last long. But I thought my mother was sure to call the police for help if she couldn’t get in touch with me. With a little hope, I prayed the police would send a helicopter (直升机) to my resecu.

Oliver was a small and introvert (内向的) boy who kept to himself. He was quiet and preferred indoor activities. Sitting in the corner of the class, he was very much a loner.
At the beginning of the semester, Oliver had a new classmate, Alan, who had just returned to England. Alan was assigned a seat next to Oliver. To his surprise, within weeks, he became good friends with Alan even though they were poles apart in personality. Alan was popular, outspoken and artistic. “Alan is all that I want to be,” Oliver thought to himself. He began listening to the music Alan listened to and having similar haircut. He even quit his drama club and started playing the online games that Alan played. He seemed to have been out of his loneliness.
It was not long before Oliver was introduced to Alan’s “cool” friends. He told himself that he would try all means to be part of the group. He would follow them to the football games and join the art club after school so he could spend more time hanging out with them. Oliver followed them around laughing when they told jokes, agreeing when they had opinions—most enthusiastically at the ones he disagreed with. He did not dare to differ in opinions as he would not want them to think badly of him. This continued for several months. At last, Oliver felt relieved that he had finally fitted in.
One day, Oliver overheard Alan and his cool friends talking. “Oliver is such a loser,” one boy commented in a playful tone. “He just follows you around trying to be you. He copies you; he does not have a personality of his own!” another boy exclaimed. Alan laughed, to make matters worse, he added, “That fellow wears me out. I wish he would leave me alone. He thinks we are best friends. A thorough fool!”

Carter.

Mira looked across the beach at her house. What came into her sight was her mother, sitting on the porch rocking her baby sister. Accompanying her was his father drinking lemonade. Mira could see them clearly because her house had two bright lights that lit up the front yard of the house. Suddenly it clicked. Mira shouted to them at the top of her voice, “Turn off the lights please!” But they failed to hear, so she began to run. She raced to her house with only one thought “Turn off the lights”. She tripped and fell, but without delay she picked herself up and continued running until she reached the house.
Upon arrival, she shouted, “The turtles are hatching! We have to help them!” With that, Mira dashed into the house and turned off the bright porch lights. Her parents were a little bit confused. However, after Mira explained what had happened, they jumped into action as well. They hurriedly rushed to their neighbors and asked them to turn off their lights. Meanwhile, Mira was off running towards the sea again. She reached the beach just in time to see the tiny turtles slipping silently into the waves. As the last turtle swam away, it seemed to have looked back at Mira. In the moonlight, Mira thought she saw it smile. Now Mira could picture all the small turtles swimming happily in the ocean.

When the day came, I arrived at the place for the race early. Soon after, the judge blew a whistle. The crowd moved, and I swept along. The road wound up between houses and shops. Children hung out of windows, cheering. I was thirsty and hot, but I thought of Mom bending over the washtub. I kept on walking. We had been walking for hours now, and my legs ached and my lungs burnt. How much longer could I go on? Then I heard excited voices ahead. When I reached the finishing line, I saw a boy in a dark suit. The boy’s face told me he had won.
Knowing I was not going to win, I was disappointed. I never got the washing machine, but instead, I received a mysterious gift. Exhausted, I made my way home. My family came close as my mom opened the box. Nestled inside was a stove with a single burner. “I wanted to win, Mom, but I couldn’t walk fast enough.” I said, feeling very sorry. “But you did win,” Mom hugged me. “With this new stove burner, cooking will be easier. Thank you, Maeja. Tonight we will celebrate with a feast!” We ate barbecue and the food smelt sweet and tasted extra delicious that night.

6.After a few weeks of this, I realized it was time for another heartfelt conversation. I explained why I did what I did. I wanted Jacob to understand that this was not just about punishment but about learning and growing. Jacob listened, and then it was his turn to speak. He shared that he initially felt angry and confused. Jacob admitted that working at the grocery store was tough, not just physically but also in terms of his pride. He was embarrassed at first, but he also learned a lot. He realized that he had been insensitive and learned that his actions had consequences.
Jacob did eventually earn back his belongings. But the real victory was the change in his attitude. He became much kinder and more appreciative of what he had. He even started a small initiative in school to collect and donate clothes for those in need. This experience, though a rollercoaster of emotions, brought us closer. It taught us both invaluable life lessons about understanding and the importance of balancing discipline with love and support. I hope my experience can offer a different perspective on the challenging yet rewarding journey of parenting.

Mr. T was astonished, and then started to explain. Sometimes students needed different things. And as an educator it’s his job to give students what they needed. People were well informed of Tyler’s condition. So even if there were numbers in math test, there were also instructions that told what to do and word problems. “But many people didn’t finish the test”, Javon complained, a sense of frustration still burning in his heart. But Mr. T insisted that sometimes it’s not about finishing or not finishing the test. When students needed help, what he could do was to make sure to meet their need. Mr. T then asked him, “Did you need some help that others don’t need?” Javon hesitated and kept silent.
“You asked for a different locker in the gym,” said Mr. T. “Well,” Javon replied after a moment of silence. “That makes sense. But I still, didn’t pass the test.” Javon said in depression. When Mr. T asked him with a smile about the material in that unit, Javon hesitated and then admitted that it was really confusing and he didn’t understand the letters at all. Then Mr. T told Javon seriously that he should have come to ask for help because he’d noticed that Javon put a lot of pressure on himself to always try his best. And Javon had to remember, asking for help was part of trying his best! Javon realized what Mr. T meant and that the needs of different people should be respected.

8.As the laborer struggled to follow the old man, his face began to soften. His fists slowly loosened. “Yeah,” he said. “I love persimmons, too...” His voice became gradually quiet. “Yes,” said the old man, smiling, “and I’m sure you have a wonderful wife.” “No,” replied the laborer. “I get no job. I get no home, either. I’m so ashamed of myself.” Tears rolled down his cheeks. I stood there speechless. Then the train arrived at my stop. As the doors opened, I heard the old man say sympathetically, “Sit down here and tell me about it.”
I turned my head for one last look before getting off the train. The laborer was seated with the old man. The old man softly touched the man’s hair. As the train pulled away, I sat down on a bench at the station. What I had wanted to do with muscle was achieved with kind words. I had just seen martial skill in action, and the essence of it was love. I would have to practice the art with an entirely different spirit. It would be a long time before I could speak about the resolution of conflict.

Suddenly, an idea formed in my mind. Why not put Mr. Nibbles on the poster? I eagerly sketched out a design featuring Mr. Nibbles in a playful pose, promoting the joy of pet adoption, "Want a pet to play with? Go get one in the local animal shelter." I admired my work with great satisfaction. The next afternoon, Ollie came over with his notebook. His design was centered on his parrot, Blue, who was singing beautifully "Oh! Be our hero! Give shelter pets a chance to be loved!" We exchanged a smile and engaged in a discussion about the final draft of the poster.
We decided to make both Mr. Nibbles and Blue the stars of the poster. Combining my playful hamster and Ollie's melodious parrot, we created a vibrant and eye-catching design. After adding the final touches, we proudly presented our final creation to Mr. Goldberg. His faces lit up as he praised the creativity and heartfelt message behind our design. A couple of months later, Mr. Goldberg shared the exciting news that lots of people had come in after seeing the posters. And some of them decided to donate or adopt! We hadn't expected our poster would cause such a sensation, but we did know our small bit of help would create a meaningful ripple.

10.“I should tend the garden well on my own,” I though to myself. The days grew warmer and lighter, and I started the work myself. I realized I needed to take care of the garden just like what Bruce had done before. Bruce used to treat the garden as a living work of art. If he were alive, he wouldn’t be happy to see the garden in a mess. I started weeding, watering and looking after the daffodils and other flower plants. It seemed like to me that working in the garden was a way to commemorate Bruce.
The garden was so full of vitality (生机) that I expected others that I expected others to appreciate it with me. One day in June, my daughter returned to visit me. She was very surprised at what she saw. Orange dragonflies were flying around the yard. Honeybees buzzed among the flowers and birds sang beautiful songs in the garden. She used to be worried that I would be in a bad mood. But now she realized everything was in good order. Seeing this, she said it looked as if her father were always with us.

12.As I pulled open the heavy glass door, I realized why I raised my hand to volunteer for this job. This man was what I want to be: a writer. He was living my dream. I could learn from him. I paced back and forth across the polished hall floor until a black man with a briefcase entered the building. He stopped and scanned the hall. His gaze fell on me. “Mr. Haley?” I said. “Yes,” he said. “I’m from Professor James’ class. Welcome,” I said. “Thank you,” he said. He extended his hand, and we shook. As we crossed the campus, I was struck by how approachable this man was. My fear was replaced by curiosity and purpose.
“I’d like to become a writer, but I don’t know if I have the talent,” I said. Mr. Haley laughed and said, “If you want to become a writer, don’t worry about whether you have some magic al gift. Just keep writing, and don’t give up until you succeed.” After my conversation with Alex Haley, I no longer obsessed over the “gift”. Instead, I started writing every day. Within two years, I published three stories in national children’s magazines. Had I not volunteered to meet this extraordinary man, I would never have received the benefit of his wise advice and the rewards that followed.

13.Maggie decided to choose different books according to their tastes. To satisfy everyone’s taste, she asked each senior what type of reading materials they enjoyed listening to. She got different answers which involved current news, children’s stories, recipe books and travel brochures. Some were more interested in poetry and drama. With the collected information, she made a reading plan for everyone. In order to make the plan practical, she went to Patti Griggs for help, who gave her some useful guidance.
With Patti Griggs’ help, a personalized reading plan was ready. Now the first priority was to get so many kinds of reading materials. Maggie managed to win over her mother and buy many varieties of books from the bookstore. She also borrowed some from her little friends. Moved by Maggie’s kindness, some seniors donated their favorite books. Patti Griggs downloaded some poems and humorous stories from the Internet. Everything was going smoothly. 14.“Wait!” Dad raised his hand and gestured me to sit down. His eyes looked serious. After a few seconds of silence, he spoke, “We know it. Ming told his parents, and his dad told me about it.” I could hear my own heartbeat. “I’ve asked them to keep it a secret. They’ll make sure Ming doesn’t talk about it either,” Dad added. A relief, followed by a profound sense of sadness. “You should learn a lesson from this. Don’t talk about things you don’t understand.”
“Ming will remain your friend,” Dad comforted me. I dropped my head, tears in my eyes. I felt a sense of relief wash over me. Perhaps Ming just needed time to process what I had shared with him. Dad advised me to give Ming some space and continue being supportive. I followed his advice, waiting patiently for things to return to normal. Gradually, I noticed a change in Ming’s behavior. He started to smile and engage with me again, proving that our friendship was still complete.

With the bouquet in hand, Evan rushed home to celebrate Mom’s birthday. On seeing the gift, his mom was astonished. The bouquet was huge and looked expensive. Rather than being happy about it, she wondered where Evan had gotten it. “Evan? Where did you get the money for this?” she asked, worried. With a big smile on his face, Evan told her the whole story and explained that he had once overheard Stacey’s conversations, learning she didn’t buy herself things to save money for him, so he made up his mind to give Mom a special gift for her birthday. Hearing the heartfelt words, mom was moved. She embraced him tightly, expressing her love and gratitude.
As Evan handed his mom the bouquet, they were surprised to discover an envelope with several hundred-dollar bills inside. Worried that Mrs. Carter had made a mistake, Evan suggested returning the money. They went to the flower shop immediately and handed the envelope back to Mrs. Carter. Smiling warmly, Mrs. Carter explained that it wasn’t a mistake but a birthday gift for Evan’s mother. She insisted they keep it, saying it was Evan’s affection for his mom that touched her and that she decided to lend a hand. Moved by Mrs. Carter’s kindness, mom invited her for dinner that night and they celebrated Stacey’s birthday together.

Mrs. Carter’s eyes were filled with admiration for the Stacey’s independence. She proposed a solution: Stacey could work at the flower shop whenever it was convenient. Mom’s face lit up with joy as she gladly accepted the offer. Stacey invited Mrs. Carter to dinner, not just as a birthday celebration but also as a way to express her gratitude to Mrs. Carter for everything she had done.

What he did next, though, brought me to tears. Instead of pushing my son away like almost everyone else, he knelt down and gently returned a hug. That sweet man then looked at me with a kind expression, and asked if it would be okay for my son to help him with his work. I nodded through my tears. The blacksmith smiled warmly and handed my son a small hammer. He remained patient, answering my son’s incessant questions and spending the next hour allowing my son to “help” hi m as he worked the forge. I watched as they hammered and forged together, witnessing an iron bar being transformed into a dazzling medal.
When that hour was up, my son proudly walked away, with the piece of iron medal. As he clutched it tightly in his hands, his head held high and a radiant smile lit up his face. It wasn’t just a piece of metal; it was a token of acceptance, friendship, and understanding. My son’s dream was realized, all thanks to his small act of kindness. For the first time, someone had actually seen my son as a person of value. A wave of emotions overwhelmed me. It was a moment of profound gratitude and renewed belief that in the most unexpected places and moments, kindness can shine through, making the journey through life’s challenges a little lighter and more hopeful. I felt I have been blessed.

Paragraph 1: In the cupboard, several paper cups and a jar of marmalade caught our sight. I reached for the jar, remembering my mother’s encounter with the skunk years ago. Could it be that this was indeed Marmalade, returning to our home in search of a familiar treat? Hurriedly, I dumped a teaspoon of marmalade into each paper cup, hoping to lure the skunk out of the attic. Hearts pounding in anticipation, we set one cup on the back porch, one just inside the back door, and one every few feet all the way up to the attic. The skunk seemed intrigued, slowly creeping towards the first cup. His nose twitched, and then he began to lick the sweet treat.
Paragraph 2: Rob and I followed the skunk as he ate his way down the stairs. He seemed to have grown accustomed to our presence, no longer trembling, and even appeared to enjoy the treat. As he finished gobbling the last bit of the marmalade, he turned and looked at us, those big brown eyes seemingly showing his gratitude. Without another scratch or sign of aggression, he turned and gracefully made his way out of the house, disappearing into the rainy morning. We stood there, amazed and in complete awe of the remarkable encounter. Later, when I shared the story with my mother, she smiled and nodded, saying, “Yes, that’s Marmalade. He always knows where to find a warm heart and a jar of marmalade.”

19.Around five hours later, a growing buzz(嗡嗡声)in the air broke the silence. Rescue was coming. I couldn’t look too far up because moving my back was impossible, so I got on my knees and whistled. The helicopter flew close to me, and the motor drowned out my calls for help. They flew over me once, twice, four times and they still could not see me, although I was waving my arms wildly. At that momet, I felt so disappointed. Then, just as it was starting to get dark, the helicopter passed and I locked eyes with one of the men inside. He pointed right at me.
Though the pilot saw me, it was difficult for the team to get to me. They tried different rescue techniques. Eventually, one crewmember came down and tied a rope around my waist and I was finally dragged into the helicopter. I was saved. The rescuers told me how my mother had contacted the police and how community members joined the search. Three hours from the start of the search, everyone was celebrating my return.
