He wanted to win the local garden club’s “Yard of the Month” award. But he didn’t have the money to buy new trees, so he began by using bushes and shrubs (矮树苗) that a local nursery had thrown away—that looked dead to most people. Because he worked days at a can factory, Jordan often tended his garden at night. Neighbors got used to seeing one little headlight as Jordan stood on a ladder, cutting and shaping his steadily growing bushes. Gradually, the shrubs took on different shapes. Jordan then began planting trees and using zip ties, coat hangers, PVC pipe, and even his wife’s old stockings to achieve the forms he wanted. “He has a way of manipulating plants to do things he wants them to do by training, bending, wiring, and clipping,” says a neighbor, “And the plants seem to bend to his will.” Many professional gardeners are amazed by what Jordan has been able to achieve. “The garden itself was created from lack of knowledge,” says Jordan in his booming bass voice, “because I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to do this with plants. For one time in my life, ignorance paid off.” Jordan’ attention to detail and his willingness to work hard have made him a local hero. He was the fist African American to win “Yard of the Month” honor from the local garden club. And more recognition followed: articles in major newspapers and appearances on well-known TV shows. Jordan’s garden now includes about 400 species of plants and 150 shrubs in different shapes. On his front yard, four-foot-tall letters filled with bright red begonias (秋海棠) spell Love, Peace, and Goodwill. These are the principles Jordan lives by. A box for donations can be found on the property, but giving is optional. Jordan welcomes people who can’t afford to pay. He understands; he’s been there. 24. What does Jordan’s experience of building the garden tell us? A. Beggars can’t be choosers. B. A good beginning is half done. C. Where there is a will, there is a way. D. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. 25. What does the underlined word “manipulating” mean in paragraph 2? A. Using. B. Expecting. C. Tending. D. Controlling. 26. Which of the following words can best describe Jordan? A. Brave and hard-working B. Creative and committed. C. Passionate but careless. D. Ambitious but ignorant. 27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Jordan comes from a poor family. B. Tickets are expensive for visitors. C It is worthwhile to pay for the visit. D. Jordan lives on donation from others. C According to a report by South China Morning Post, China is planning to launch a hyperloop (超级高铁), also known as a super-high speed pipeline maglev system by 2035. If the project goes as planned, the new train will be the world’s fastest ground-based transport technology. Chinese authorities have announced the approval of the country’s first hyperloop line. Its length will be 175 kilometers, and it will pass between the cities of Shanghai and Hangzhou. These are two key metropolitan areas for the country’s economy, known for their large populations. The distance between these two cities can now be covered in about three hours by car or an hour by high-speed train. However, the hyperloop can reach speeds of up to 1000 km/h, which means that the route can be completed in just 15 minutes. That’s 2 times faster than commercial passenger planes and 10 times than traditional high-speed trains. The proposed project will make China one of the pioneers in hyperloop technology, allowing faster travel between several major cities. The hyperloop provides a high-security level with low energy consumption. It reduces noise and pollution levels while still being faster than commercial flights and the fastest current bullet train. The technology will further advance China’s position as a leader in transport. A super-fast hyperloop train in China has completed its first test runs. These consisted of three test runs at a superconducting maglev test line in Datong, Shanxi province that reached the speed of 50 km/h. However, the current tube available for trials measures only 2 km in length. It is expected to be extended to 60 km over the next few years. 28. What is the project about? A. Building the world’s longest rail line. B. Enlarging the passenger capacity of the train. C. Constructing the first hyperloop line in China. D. Expanding the coverage of the railway system. 29. What are the figures in paragraph 3 intended for? A. To prove the high speed of the hyperloop. B. To stress the convenience of traveling by railway. C. To state the necessity of developing high-speed trains. D. To show China ‘s great efforts to improve transport technology. 30. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the project? A. Its main purposes. B. Its potential value. C. Its specific tasks. D. Its environmental benefits. 31. What is the next step of the project? A. Extending the railway line for trials. B. Increasing the length of the hyperloop trains. C. Conducting the train’s first test runs in Datong. D. Reducing noise and pollution levels of the train. D Medicine is not only a human invention. Many other animals have been known to self-medicate with plants and minerals for infections and other conditions. Behavioral ecologist Helen Morrogh-Bernard has spent decades studying orangutans (猩猩) and says she has now found evidence they use plants in a medicinal way. Morrogh and her colleagues watched 10 orangutans occasionally chew a particular plant (which is not part of their normal diet) into a foamy lather (泡沫) and then rub it into their fur. The apes spent up to 45 minutes at a time massaging the mixture onto their upper arms or legs. The researchers believe this behavior is the first known example using a painkiller. Local people use the same plant, Dracaena cantleyi, to treat aches and pains. Morrogh’s co-authors studied its chemistry. They added extracts (汁) from the plant to human cells that had been grown in a dish and had been artificially stimulated to produce cytokines (细胞因子) that causes inflammation (炎症) and discomfort. The plant extract reduced the production of several types of cytokines, the scientists reported the finding in a study published last November in Scientific Reports. The results suggest that orangutans use the plant to reduce inflammation and treat pain. Such findings could help identify plants and chemicals that might be useful for human medications. In creatures such as insects, the ability to self-medicate is almost certainly innate; woolly bear (灯蛾毛虫) infected with flies seek out and eat plant substances poisonous to the flies. But more complex animals may learn such tricks after an initial discovery by one member of their group. For example, an orangutan may have rubbed the plant on its skin to try to treat parasites (寄生虫) and realized that it also had a pleasant pain-killing effect. That behavior may then have been passed on to other orangutans. Because this type of self-medication is seen only in south-central Borneo, Morrogh says, it was probably learned locally. 32. Why does orangutans chew Dracaena cantleyi? A. To self medicate. B. To have their normal diet. C. To scare other animals away. D. To pass on a message to other orangutans. 33. How can the findings benefit human being? A. They can help vets treat pets. B. They can help scientists study orangutans. C. They can help botanist learn more about plants. D. They can help people find new resources for human medication. 34. Which of the following best explains the underlined word “innate” in paragraph 6? A. natural B. sociable C. obtainable D. professional 35. What is the main idea of the text? A. Apes use plant extracts to treat pain. B. Humans and animals have a lot in common. C. A plant has been found useful for human medication. D. Morrogh-Bernard and her colleagues have been observing orangutans. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) Have you ever complained that there just aren’t enough hours in a day? Do you usually find yourself falling short on time in completing assigned tasks? ____36____ No matter how hard I tried to be focused and productive, tasks just kept piling up towards the end every day. That didn’t change until I discovered Time Blocking, since when my daily schedule has been transformed for the better. So what is it exactly? It is a simple time management technique where you divided your day into time blocks that are dedicated to specific tasks or groups of tasks. It’s a popular method to boost your productivity and allow you to focus on your tasks. ____37____ Imagine that a dozen or so tasks are due tomorrow. Like a majority of people, you open your to-do app of choice and neatly list down everything that you plan to do, and then plot some important meetings and reminders in your calendar app. ____38____ . Each task or group of tasks in a day is a small-scale goal for you to achieve within that time-frame, so you are more determined to meet deadlines and reach your goals. It also improves your focus and helps get rid of procrastination (拖延症), as you are only working on one specific task at a time. A. I used to be in the same boat. B. I believe you have encountered questions like this C. The benefits of Time Blocking are considerable. D. You work your way down the priority list and everything goes as planned. E. It was snowing heavily and the traffic inched slowly forward like snails. I was so hungry because I skipped my lunch that I decided to stop by KFC and had a quick bite before I continued my journey home. It took me a long time to find a place to park my car. With my face buried in my collar, I walked slowly in the snow. Soon my hands were numb(麻木) with cold, so I pulled my gloves out of my coat pocket and put them on. I ordered some fried chicken and dug into my pocket for my wallet to pay, only to find it was not there! I remembered I did bring it with me before I set out. Embarrassed, I left the chicken on the counter and said I would return in a minute. Deeply worried, I got out of KFC and ran towards my car, wondering where my wallet, with everything in it, was. Fresh snow was like a blank paper, recording my tracks. My attention fixed on the ground, I expected to find it on my way. Unfortunately, what I found was only the shape of it in the snow. Obviously, I lost it when I pulled my gloves out. Judging from the footprints on the ground, I was not the only one. There was someone else joining my way. But the footprints of this guy were messy. It seemed that he walked back and forth. My heart sank. At a loss of which way he went, I knew I could never claim my wallet back. Bye, fried chicken, not today. I walked towards my car helplessly. A short, skinny man was standing by my car. He seemed like homeless because he was dressed in oversized worn-out coat and his face was dirty. He was stamping his feet to keep warm. I felt sorry for him because I had nothing to help him, no money, no food. The man noticed me and asked if this was my car. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Refusing my money he was about to leave. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$第一节听下面5段对话。 Text one, don't forget to prepare the bread deer and cook some eggs too. Let me explain a little bit. As you may know already, it's a required meeting once a week. I expect you to do all the experiments and to keep the results in your lab notebook. I'll collect the notebooks every two weeks. You'll be graded on lab notebooks and quiz es. But the most important information I want to give you now is about safety. First of all, you must wear shoes that cover your feet in the lab. Tenny shoes are okay. Also don't wear loose clothes, long scarves, big necklaces or loose spouts. They get caught in something or fall into liquid. Another thing to do for safety is to clean up. Be sure to put the waste in the correct containers. We can't mix liquid with paper. This is extremely important. I don't want any fires in this room. You are responsible for washing out your own lab equipment and putting IT away. If you don't do this, I will take away points from your grade. Nobody's going to clean up up to you. okay? Any questions? Hello everyone, my name is bonny. C. It is worthwhile to pay for the visit. D. Jordan lives on donation from others. 24. C 25. D 26. B 27. 28. C 29. A 30. B 31. 32. A 33. D 34. A 35. The apes spent up to 45 minutes at a time massaging the mixture onto their upper arms or legs. The researchers believe this behavior is the first known example using a painkiller (Morrogh和她的同事观察了10只猩猩偶尔将一种植物(这不是它们正常饮食的一部分)咀嚼成泡沫状,然后摩擦到皮毛上。 研究人员认为,这种行为是已知的第一个使用止痛药的例子)”,第四段中的“Local people use the same plant, Dracaena cantleyi, to treat aches and pains. (当地人用同一种植物龙血树来治疗疼痛)”和第五段中的“The results suggest that orangutans use the plant to reduce inflammation and treat pain. 故选A项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) Have you ever complained that there just aren’t enough hours in a day? 【36题详解】 根据上文“Have you ever complained that there just aren’t enough hours in a day? Do you usually find yourself falling short on time in completing assigned tasks?(你是否曾经抱怨过一天的时间不够用? 以及后文“No matter how hard I tried to be focused and productive, tasks just kept piling up towards the end every day. That didn’t change until I discovered Time Blocking, since when my daily schedule has been transformed for the better. So what is it exactly?(无论我多么努力地保持专注和高效,每天的任务总是堆积如山。 【37题详解】 根据上文“It is a simple time management technique where you divided your day into time blocks that are dedicated to specific tasks or groups of tasks. It’s a popular method to boost your productivity and allow you to focus on your tasks.(这是一种简单的时间管理技巧,你可以把一天的时间分成几个时间段,专门处理特定的任务或任务组。 【38题详解】 根据上文“Imagine that a dozen or so tasks are due tomorrow. A properly organized time-blocked schedule is far more effective than any form of to-do list.(你的任务越具体,你就越专注,也就越有效率。 【40题详解】 根据后文“It not only makes your to-do list more manageable, but also it gives you more control over your day and increases your productivity. Each task or group of tasks in a day is a small-scale goal for you to achieve within that time-frame, so you are more determined to meet deadlines and reach your goals. It also improves your focus and helps get rid of procrastination (拖延症), as you are only working on one specific task at a time.(它不仅使你的待办事项清单更易于管理,而且还能让你更好地控制你的一天,提高你的效率。 In my 30s, I decided to learn to ride a bike. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Refusing my money, he was about to leave. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】The man noticed me and asked if this was my car. Surprised as I was, I nodded, waiting for what he was going to say. He seemed excited, directly coming closer and quickly taking out a wallet, which I knew was mine at the first glance. I couldn’t stop staring at the surprising packet. I knew I wouldn’t say goodbye to my fried chicken today. But first, I need show my sincere gratitude to the good soul, who must have stayed in the cold for long just to find the owner. I opened my wallet, pulled out two banknotes and delivered to him as my thankfulness. However, he just smiled, shaking his head. Refusing my money, he was about to leave. Seeing him disappearing in the distance gradually, I finally made up my mind to stop him and asked him to wait a minute. I grabbed the money, rushed to the counter and ordered two fried chickens. On heading back, I slipped the package into his hand, inviting him to enjoy the food together. We exchanged our thoughts a lot as we were eating and laughing. It was on that night that I came to realize that there are always people who try to help others despite their own trouble. 词汇激活 行为类 ①递:deliver/hand/pass ②尝试:try/attempt 情绪类 ①激动:excited/thrilled ②意外:surprised/unexpected 【点睛】[高分句型1]Surprised as I was, I nodded, waiting for what he was going to say.(含有让步状语从句的倒装结构,现在分词作状语和what引导的宾语从句) [高分句型2]It was on that night that I came to realize that there are always people who try to help others despite their own trouble.(含强调句型和that引导的宾语从句和who引导的定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
