this can hclp both people, as it can be good and helpful to study together as long as you can stay focused.
But if this doesn't work for you, it's perfectly OK to tell the friend no. You need your study ume, especially with an
exam coming up. Of course, you can tell the friend this in a kind way, while still being firm(坚定的) and sticking to your
principles. It's good to be understanding and kind to others. But you don't need to give up your own progress and
uyell-being.

When we meet someone for the first time. we usually gct a litle scnse of what kind of person he or she is by the way
he or she shakes bands, talks, or walks, In the age of social nctworking, however, first impressions(印象) are sometimes
made even before we meet someone in person-that is. by looking at their profile photos (头像)
According to a recent study, these profile photos say a lot about people's personality (个性). For example, outgoing
people are more likely to pose in an unusual way and use things such as glasses or a guitar in thcir profile photos because
they cnjoy new and exciting expericnces
However, neurotic(神经质的) people often hold back their bad feclings. Thcy try to avoid showing their faces. So
they often use something like a pet, a car or a building
"The colors used in them also give us some information about the photos' owners. For cxample, outgoing people were
found to have the most colorful profile photos, as they want to show themselves off." the researchers wrotc.
"Although social media photos usually mean an extension(延伸) of onesclf. thcy also allow a user to show his or her
own personality and how perfect they can be," according to the researchers
So, when choosing a profile photo, maybe we should ask ourselves first what kind of photo we'd like to show. After all
first impressions always last.

Babjes don't learn to talk just from hearng sounds. They arc lip-readers too. It happcns during the stage when a baby's
babbling (呀声) gradually changes from unclear voices into that first "mama" or"dada". The baby in order to do like you
has to fgure out how to shape their lips to make that particular sound they are hearng, according to developmental
psychologust David L.cwkowicz of Florida Atlantic University, who led the study.
Apparently it doesn't take tbcm too long to leam about the movements that match basic sounds. By their first birthdays
babies start changing back to look you in the eye again. It is true that face-time with babies is very important for speech
development more than, say, tuming on the latest baby DVD
But Lewkowicz went a step further. He and his student Amy Hansen-Tif tested nearly 18o babies, groups of them at
ages 4. 6. 8, 10 and 12 months. How? They showed videos of a woman speaking n English or Spanish to babies of English
speakers. They found that when the speaker used English, the 4-month-olds gazed mostly nto her cyes. The 6-months-olds
spent equal amounts of ume lookung at the eyes and the mouth. The 8-and 10-month-olds studied mostly the mouth. At 12
months, attention started changing back toward the speaker's eyes
But what happened when these babies accustomed to English heard Spanish? The I2-month-olds studied the mouth
longer, just like younger babies. They needed the extra information to recognize the unfamiliar sounds. That fits with
rescarch into bilingualism (X)that shows babics' brains adjust thcmsclves to distinguishing the sounds of their native
tanguage over othcr langunges in the first year of lifc.
The continucd lip-reading shows the 1-year-olds clearly still are fit for lenrnung. Babies are so hard to study that this is
"a fairly heroic data set'", says Duke Oniversity cognitive neuroscientist Greg Appelbaum, who found the research so
fascanating that he wants to know more.
47. According to the first paragraph, babies
A. might get its voice'mana"by lip-reading
B.learm to talk just from heanng the sounds
C. like to figure out how to shape their lips
D communicate with parents through gestures
4s. What is necessary in developing babies' speech according to Lewkowicz?
A. Playng baby DvD ncarby.
B. Teaching babies to read English.
C. Spcaling with babies face to face
D. Speaking different languages in front of babies
49. Which of the following shows the right change of babies' eye gaze according to the text?
