“Colour” and “color” , “favourite” and “favorite” , “honour” and “honor” …Have you ever wondered why Americans spell those words without a “u”? Is it because they are lazy? Of course not. In fact, the difference in spelling was started by Noah Webster (1758-1843). He was a teacher who reformed (改革) English to make American identity (特征) stronger. Linguists (语言学家) celebrate his birthday on October 16 every year.
After the Revolutionary War (1775-1783), Webster believed that Americans should have their own dictionary, rather than rely on British dictionaries. He dropped the British “u” in some words. And he changed “centre” into “center” for children to learn English by spelling words more like what they sounded. He used “subway” instead of British word “underground”. Some other examples are “soccer” and “football”, “fall” and “autumn”.
Webster wasn’t shy about expressing his opinions. In defining (定义) preposterous (unreasonable), he wrote: “A republican government in the hands of female is preposterous.”
Webster spent 28 years on the project before completing the 70,000-word dictionary with his American-style spelling in 1828. He also added local words.
His dictionary was widely used in schools. Linguists believed it helped a new country achieve unity (统一) and cultural independence at a time when most people cared about political freedom.
“He was the creator of our language and the creator of American identity,” said Joshua Kendall, who is working on a book about Webster. “He at last brought us together through our language.”
4. What does the underlined phrase “rely on” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. depend on. B. believe. C. endure. D. abandon.
5. Which is NOT true about Webster’s dictionary?
A. It has local words in it. B. It is a 70,000-word dictionary.
C. All the words are spelled without “u”. D. Its words are in American-style spelling.
6. What do people think of Webster’s dictionary?
A. It is the only dictionary that Americans still use today.
B. It helped to bring Americans together besides its cultural influence.
C. It has no influence on the development of American English.
D. It helped to make American English more useful than British English.
7. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A The development of the British English.
B. American English is better than British English.
C. Noah Webster added local words to the dictionary.
D. Noah Webster wrote an American English dictionary and reformed English.

根据划线词的上文“After the Revolutionary War (1775-1783), Webster believed that Americans should have their own dictionary (独立战争(1775-1783)后,韦伯斯特认为美国人应该有自己的词典)”和下文“He dropped the British “u” in some words. And he changed “centre” into “center” for children to learn English by spelling words more like what they sounded. He used “subway” instead of British word “underground”. (他在一些单词中省略了英式的u。他把centre改成了center,让孩子们通过拼写更接近发音的单词来学习英语。他用subway代替了英国的underground)”可知,韦伯斯特编写该词典是在美国独立战争后,是为了让美国人拥有自己的词典,词典中的一些单词与英式英语不同。由此推知,他希望美国人在词典这方面能够独立,不依赖英式词典,划线词意思应该是“依赖”。故选A项。
根据第二段中“He dropped the British “u” in some words. (他在一些单词中省略了英式的u。)”以及第四段“Webster spent 28 years on the project before completing the 70,000-word dictionary with his American-style spelling in 1828. He also added local words. (韦伯斯特花了28年的时间才在1828年完成了这部7万词的美式拼写词典。他还加入了当地的词汇)”可知,韦伯斯特词典中包含当地词汇,有7万词,且单词是美式拼写,把一些英式英语中的字母u省掉;C项“所有单词的拼写都没有u”不符合文意。故选C项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Linguists believed it helped a new country achieve unity (统一) and cultural independence at a time when most people cared about political freedom. (语言学家认为,在大多数人关心政治自由的时候,它帮助一个新国家实现了统一和文化独立)”和最后一段““He was the creator of our language and the creator of American identity,” said Joshua Kendall, who is working on a book about Webster. “He at last brought us together through our language.”

A British woman, Dr. Mantri, growing up in India started to notice her son, Dhruv, was struggling with simple math problems when he was in the fifth grade. After noticing this, she started using an abacus (算盘) to help her son visually (形象化地) understand mathematics.
“I would ask him something like 35 minus 13 but he ‘couldn’t’ do it,” said Dhruv’s mom Dr. Mantri. “I decided to change the way he looked at numbers,” she said. “An abacus is a tried and tested method, and the Egyptians used them for building the pyramid.” In just six days he started to make progress in using the abacus and would go on to become an outstanding kid with numbers, with even his classmates’ parents reaching out for help.
She never thought she would teach her son to use an abacus, which she used as a child in India and it was always helpful. Within six days she started to notice a difference and see results. So dramatic was the change that school staff asked him to perform with the abacus at a meeting, where some parents even came to ask for advice on using it for their kids.
IT specialist Dr. Mantri said the humble abacus can be used for calculations and kids enjoy learning on it because it’s like a game. “It becomes a playing tool for younger children, for it feels like a game. I think the success comes because children can touch and feel an abacus and visualize them,” she added.
By the age of 12, Dhruv was giving online cyber security class and is now pursuing a career in data science and analytics. Dhruv has now got an apprenticeship (实习) at an international firm. During the four-year apprenticeship, he will spend one day a week studying Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Glasgow Caledonian University. “He is so confident now and I am so proud,” Dr. Mantri said, with Dhruv adding, “I don’t think my teachers would have guessed that I would be following a career in data science at that time.”
8. Why did Dr. Mantri begin to use an abacus to teach his son?
A. Her son showed high interest in the toy abacus.
B. Her son had some difficulty in learning maths.
C. Her son had talent for numbers when young.
D. Her son once watched others use an abacus.
9. What can we know from what Dr. Mantri said in Paragraph 2?
A. The abacus had been out of date now.
B. The abacus had a very long history.
C. The abacus was easy for most people to use.
D. The abacus was a challenge for her son.
10. What is the main topic of Paragraph 4?
A. The way to teach children to learn on an abacus.
B. The development and change of the abacus in history.
C. The reason why children would love to learn on an abacus.
D. The disadvantage of using an abacus to calculate an amount.
11. What is true about Dhruv at present?
A. He is a full-time student at Glasgow Caledonian University.
B. He is expert in data science and analytics now.
C. He gives online cyber security class now.
D. He works in an international company.
B 9. B 10. C 11. D

Tom threw himself on the sofa, sighing. Mother’s Day was coming, but he didn’t have a present. “How can I buy a present without any money?” he thought.
Tom picked up the newspaper that was lying on the sofa. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring(赞助)a contest. “Tell us why your mom is special and win a beautiful and precious gift for her.” said the advertisement.
“This is perfect!” thought Tom. He ran to his room with the newspaper. After taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.
“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes lunch for me to take to school and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want her to. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters(怪兽). And she gives me the best hug, but never in front of my friends, who may laugh at me for hugging my mom.”
Tom liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp. He ran to the mailbox with his entry(参赛作品). “Mom will love having a special gift,” he thought.
Tom checked his mailbox every day for his prize. Days went by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother’s Day. Tom still hadn’t heard anything about the contest.
“What am I going to do now?” he wondered. He didn’t have a present, and he didn’t have a gift. And he still didn’t have money.

Then Tom thought he could show his love for his mother in another way. He searched in his drawers and fortunately found a piece of delicate paper. He sat down straight on his chair, and began to write a letter in his best handwriting as a Mother’s Day present. “Dear Mom, I’m writing this to tell you that you are the best mother in the world…” With a sincere heart. Tom finished the letter and put it in an envelope with a smile on his face.
On Mother’s Day, Tom gave his mother the envelope with the letter in it. She opened it and found the letter. Having finishing reading the letter, his mom swept him up into her arms(抱进怀里)with her eyes wet. “Thank you, my dear!” she said, hugging Tom more tightly. Leaning against his mother’s shoulder, Tom slowly explained why be had chosen to write a letter as a gift. After hearing the reason, his mom gently touched his head, saving, “To me, your letter is better than any other gift.” Hugging each other, they felt happy as if they had everything.

7. What’s the main idea of the passage?

She never thought she would teach her son to use an abacus which she used as a child in India and it was always helpful.

He had to think of something. Tom closed his eyes, curled(使弯曲)his toes and thought hard.
