The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s longest reef (礁) . It is over 2,300 km long and lies along the north-eastern coast (海岸) of Australia. The reef is made up of billions of corals (珊瑚) It is home to over 1,500 different kinds of fish.
How did the Great Barrier Reef come into being?
The Great Barrier Reef we see today is less than 10,000 years old. About 10,000 years ago, at the end of the last Ice Age, the ice at the North and South Poles turned into water and flooded the land on Australia’s coast. The shallow (浅的) water became the perfect place for corals to grow. Over thousands of years, they joined together and became the Great Barrier Reef today.
Why is the Great Barrier Reef dying?
The Great Barrier Reef is facing many problems today. Pollution, overfishing and over tourism have all caused damage (破坏) to the reef. Kenya is home to many rare mammals (珍稀哺乳动物), but now it’s getting more difficult to protect them. To solve the problem. Kenya’s wildlife (野生动物) officials have made a free smartphone app.
The app called Makenya lets any user to give the location (地点) of rare mammals after seeing them. Users can also share some other information about these mammals. For example, they can send their pictures and their number, and even report what they are doing.
Dr. Simon Musila, a scientist at the National Museums of Kenya, says it’s necessary to get more people to share information about rare mammals. This can help mammal scientists in Kenya. The scientists have kept records of the rare mammals’ changing environment. However, it’s not enough to only depend on their hard work. There is a need to get all the people to join them, including guides (导游), visitors, and students. All of them can use the app to help.
