November 22, 2023 was a special day for Lin Zhehao. Just before his 18th birthday, he got a letter from his pen pal, a student from Daye Middle School in Hubei, China. This letter was part of Blue Letter Project, which offers psychological (心理的) help to rural (乡村的) children aged 13—14 by writing letters to them.
Lin, a student from Wuhan University, joined as a “letter volunteer”, and he wanted to make these children feel happy and active. To do this, volunteers like Lin learned how to give psychological help in a nice way. The key was to listen carefully and let the pen pals talk freely. And he knew that being optimistic (乐观的) and never giving up are also important.
Lin Lusheng, the project’s leader, said that kids often don’t share their feelings with adults, which may lead to psychological problems. In this project, about 1% of the children faced serious problems like hurting themselves or even others. To help those kids, volunteers, mostly college students and professionals, wrote letters to the children. For example, Ji Xiaoming, who works at Eleme, wrote to Cao Yajuan. Cao wrote about her stress from study and wanted some help. Ji shared her own experiences and advice, “Remember, every challenge is a chance to grow,” Ji wrote. “When you fall down, don’t stay there. Stand up, and keep moving forward. You are stronger than you think, and I believe in you.” This letter made Cao feel more hopeful.
This project is a bridge between rural children and their volunteer pen pals. It’s not just about helping rural children, and it’s also about growth for both sides.
1.What is the purpose of the Blue Letter Project?
A.To give away money to rural children. B.To help rural children with their study.
C.To help rural children with psychological problems. D.To encourage rural children to write more letters.
2.What does the underlined word “this” refer to in paragraph 2?
A.Joining as a “letter volunteer”. B.Making the children feel happy and active.
C.Learning how to give psychological help. D.Listening to the pen pals carefully.
3.What advice did Ji Xiaoming give to Cao Yajuan?
A.Stay still when falling down. B.Give up when facing challenges.
C.Believe in herself and keep going. D.Ask for help from volunteers.
4.What can you learn from the last paragraph?
A.The project is good for the growth of rural children. B.Volunteers play an important role in helping rural children.
C.Rural children and volunteer pen pals have built a bridge. D.The project helps both rural children and volunteer pen pals grow.
5.What is the best title of this passage?
A.Special Day for Lin Zhehao. B.Challenges Faced by Rural Children.
C.The Importance of Communication for Rural Children. D.Blue Letter Project: Bridging Hearts Through Letters.

Hi, Jason,
Great to hear from you! I’d really like to be your pen-pal. I think Internet pal is a better name, isn’t it?
I’m the same age as you are and I’m in Grade 6 at a junior high school. I live with my mum and my elder sister. My mum works very hard. She’s a nurse. My sister goes to work, too, so I look after myself most of the time. My dad doesn’t live with us but I can see him once a week. He sometimes takes me to football games.
I like most sports, but my favourite sport is American football. I watch my team play every Sunday. They always win the games. They are the best in the league.
My best friend is my dog. His name is Abe, after Abraham Lincoln. Some people say it’s a silly name for a dog, but I like it. And so does he! I got him from the City Dog Pound. When he saw me, he wagged (摇摆) his tail, and I knew we were going to be friends. He goes everywhere with me. When my mum is on the night shift (轮班) at the hospital, Abe sleeps on my bed!
Write to me soon. Tell me something about Paris.
Yours,
Tommy
