Cooperation comes from friendship, friendship comes from trust, and trust comes from kindness. It’s easy to tell that kindness is very important. What is kindness then? To be exact, kindness is the quality of being friendly. If we give up our seats on the bus, help a classmate solve a math problem, or welcome a new member into a group activity, we are showing kindness. Actually, these acts are done without expectation of reward (回报).
We begin to realise that while helping others, we’re in fact helping ourselves. Showing kindness benefits us in different ways. It helps us know about ourselves. It develops our problem-solving skills. It also gives us the chance to be thankful.
We can never imagine the power of one simple act of kindness. It may change our day. And that day may change our week. That week may change the rest of the year—or even our whole life.
In short, we rise by lifting others.
Here are some teenagers’ acts of kindness.
Linda: I sat next to a new student at lunch. I was pleased because I made her day.
Kayla: In order to raise money and protect wild animals, I held a singing competition. Iwas proud of it.
Peter: I opened the door for an old lady. I felt happy because I could help other people.
1.What is kindness according to the text?
2.List two benefits of showing kindness.
3.What did Linda do to show her kindness?
4.What do you think of Peter’s act of kindness? Write 30 words or more.

With the help of Matt’s father, they built a wooden box. They put a door on it and placed their small library in front of the yard. Matt put two books in the box and said, “Now I just have to wait.”
Matt ran out three times that day to check. But each time, his books were untouched. The next days, Matt kept checking the box, but his books were still there.
“No kids saw it, and no one wants to trade books,” Matt said in a low voice.

Weifang in Shandong province has a long history of making kites. It is known as the birthplace of kites.
According to local artisans (工匠), Weifang kite-making appeared 2000 years ago. At first, they were often used by the army for measuring distance and communication purposes. During the Ming Dynasty (1368 —1644), kites started to be popular among ordinary people as entertainment.
Made from bamboo and decorated with traditional Chinese paintings, Weifang kite-making was included in the national-level intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) lists in 2006. The International Kite Festival has been held in Weifang every year since 1984.

Having a special connection with kites, Yang learned the skills from her grandfather at the age of 16. After she had practiced the skills for 10 years, she started her own shop in 1992.
On Yang’s kites, people can see not only common shapes like butterflies and swallows (燕子), but also some prints telling ancient Chinese tales and history. For example, she once made a kite showing a phoenix (凤凰) head lined with pictures of 50 famous women in Chinese history on each side.
In her spare time, she also travels to different countries including Germany, Australia, the US and New Zealand to tell people about Chinese stories seen on kites and the traditional ways of making kites.

Everyone has their favorite food. Some might love chocolate. Some might love potato chips. Think about your favorite food. Have you ever wondered why your favorite food tastes so delicious? The answer is about your tongue(舌头)and nose. There are some taste buds(味蕾)on your tongue. They give you the sense of taste. How do the taste buds work? In fact, there are many tiny hairs on the taste buds. These tiny hairs send messages to your brain about how something tastes. In this way, you know whether it is sweet, sour, bitter or salty.
A person has about 10,000 taste buds. They keep working all the time when we enjoy our food. The taste buds don’t always stay the same. They are replaced(更新)every two weeks or so.
However, as a person gets older, some of these taste buds don’t get replaced. The old may only have 5,000 working taste buds. That’s why some foods may taste stronger for you than they do for the old.
Besides your tongue, your nose also helps you learn about the taste of food. Sometimes, strong smells can even confuse(使困惑)your sense of taste. Try holding an onion under your nose while eating an apple. What do you taste?
So next time you enjoy salty pizza and sweet ice cream, thank your tongue and your nose. Without them, you won’t have any sense of taste at all. Without the sense of taste, life will be boring.

That looks deep.” “It sure does,” said Dave. “Let’s drop some stones into the hole. We can count until we hear the stones hit the bottom.” They threw some stones and waited. There was no sound.
Mike said, “Wow! That is really deep. Let’s throw some big rocks down there. Those should make a noise.” So they picked up a few soccer-sized rocks and threw them into the hole. Suddenly, the lawnmower stopped. Clara’s mom looked sad. Clara wondered what was wrong. Her mom picked something up out of the grass, and walked to Clara.

The word silk itself is beautiful. The story of silk started in China over 4, 000 years ago. One story says a silkworm’s cocoon (茧) fell into a woman’s teacup. It then opened into a single, unbroken thread (线). This was an important discovery. The Chinese learned they could use the cocoons to make cloth that was both beautiful to look at and soft to touch.
Making silk was a protected secret in China for many years. In other countries, silk was very valuable. Often it was worth more than gold. It was said that the secret was finally given away when a queen left China for India. In her hair, she secretly carried many silkworms.
By the year 1 A.D., silk was sold as far west as Rome, and all along the Silk Road. Finally, around the year 300, silk also travelled from China to Japan. In 1522, the Spanish brought silkworms to Mexico.
Today people around the world still make many beautiful things from silk. But silk isn’t only beautiful. It looks easy to break, but actually it’s very strong. For example, people have already used it to make bicycle wheels. And some doctors even use silk threads in hospital. Silk is also lightweight and warm. Rivers are one of our most important natural resources. Many of the world’s great cities are located on rivers, and almost every country has at least one river flowing through. That plays an important part in the lives of its people.
Most rivers begin in mountains and end in the oceans. Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the USA is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great, but it is also important for transportation. Ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. The greatest of all for navigation (航海), however, is the Amazon in Brazil. It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles upon it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food to eat, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and recreation for people who live along their banks. In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam (大坝) across a river and create a lake from behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to irrigate (灌溉) their field but also to make electricity for their homes and industries. However, large cities and industries that are located upon rivers often make problems. As the cities grow in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits of the natural resources.
9.How many rivers does almost every country have flowing through?
10.How long have people used water for transportation?
11.Why do engineers sometimes build a dam and create a lake?
12.Do you think it is important to protect water resources? Why or why not? Write 30 words or more.

Although she spends quite a bit of time away from home, she’s also a really cool Mum. Bia’s really lucky to have such a great Mum.
Alex,15 ★ The person I admire more than anyone is my grandmother Gwen. She’s 78 and looks just amazing. Many people think she’s my mother when they see us together. But she doesn’t just look young. She is young. She’s one of the most active people I know. She spends a lot of her time doing things for charity. For example, she’s just done a parachute jump to raise money for a children’s charity in India. A parachute jump! At her age! She’s such a positive person, always seeing the good in other people. “Life is for living.” she tells me. I hope I have that much life in me when I’m her age.

Youngsters should always be passionate (热情的).We still remember that about 100 years ago, millions of brave people together founded the Communist Party of China. They devoted (献身) themselves into the development of our country. It’s they who brought us today’s peaceful life.
As modern young people, we all have our own dreams. And it’s our passion that drives us forward. I have a friend who loves music and often posts his own works on the Internet. He receives lots of followers and praise. He can not only develop his interest, but also have an influence on others. And I realized that millions of young people like him are now bravely chasing (追逐) their dreams.
At the same time, we have to take up our social responsibility. No matter when a big accident happens, there are always armed police officers around the country fighting there. Among them, some are even 00s. In addition, it’s touching to see many people offer help online by donating money and clothes. Mars, Robots, Higher Prices and More
What will the world look like in 2045? I recently spoke with four American students, Caden Sorensen, Chandler Stark, Fatima Abdi and Noelani Velasco Polley, to get their thoughts on this question.
In 2045, the kids think, humans will be able to live on Mars. They suggest that everyone should spend a few years on the red planet to give the Earth a “rest”. “And when we come back, we must try not to pollute as much,” says Stark.
But Mars is not yet ready for human habitation (居住). The kids agree that immediate action must be taken to clean up the Earth. “It’s time to fix it now,” says Sorensen. “It’s not going to fix itself.”
The kids do not just care about progress in space exploration. They are also interested in the future jobs.
Stark hopes to compose (创作) music for TV shows one day. Abdi wants to be a business owner. Sorensen dreams about becoming a lawyer. Polley wants to be a scientist.
“I don’ t think there will be a lot of fast-food jobs,” said Abdi. She also thinks that everything is going to get a lot more expensive. “People will have to look for higher-paying jobs.”
Many jobs, the kids predict (预测), will be replaced by robots. “There’ll be no more factory jobs because robots can just do everything,” says Stark. But they believe the power to shape the future is in human hands. The world will be a better place, but of course, “we need to work hard, and we all need to learn to be kind to others.”
21.In the kids’opinion, where will humans be able to live in 2045?
22.What is Sorensen’s idea about the Earth?
23.Why does Stark say there will be no more factory jobs?
24.What do you think the world will look like in 2045? Write 30 words or more.

Natural disasters can hit anywhere, anytime, and being prepared is the key to staying safe. Earthquakes, typhoons (台风), and floods are common natural disasters that can cause terrible damage (破坏) and bring serious threats (威胁) to safety.
Earthquakes suddenly shake the ground, often without warning. To stay safe during an earthquake, people had better “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” until the shaking stops. You can find a strong table to hide under and hold on.
Typhoons, known as hurricanes or cyclones in other parts of the world, can lead to strong winds and too much rain. Before a typhoon arrives, storing necessary things like food, water, and batteries is important.
Floods can happen when rivers run over because of too much rain. To prepare well, avoid building homes in the areas where floods often happen and place important electrical appliances (电器) up off the ground in your home. Having an emergency plan is also a must.
By understanding these disasters and taking action, communities and people can reduce the risk of harm and recover (恢复) more quickly after disasters happen.
