句子是一个完整的意义单位,由不同的句子成分构成。其中,最重要的成分就是主语和谓语,分别表明句子的主体和主体的动作或状态。
此外,句子成分还包括宾语、表语、状语、宾语补足语等,它们共同组成了英语中的基本句型,并承担不同的表意功能。

(1) Class begins.

谓语是主语所做的动作。这种句型的动词是不及物动词(即动词后不可以直接接宾语)。常见的不及物动词有:work, jump, arrive, come, disappear, cry, happen, die等。
(1) The baby slept peacefully.
(2) His father has gone abroad.
(3) She stayed in the room.
有时为了表示发生的频率、原因、结果、目的、地点或时间等,可以有状语来修饰。
SVA 主语 + 谓语(不及物动词) + 状语
SP 主语 + (系动词) + 表语
(1) David Smith is a student.
(2) He became a scientist.
(3) Dinner smells good.
(4) The cake tastes sweet.
此类型的句子,谓语动词不能表达一个完整的意思,必须加上一个表明主语性质或状态的表语,才能表达完整的意思。
SVO 主语 + 谓语(及物动词) + 宾语
(1) We love our country.
(2) John opened the fridge.
此句型中谓语是及物动词,其后必须跟宾语才能使句意表达完整。
一些不及物动词后面加介词相当于一个
及物动词,之后可加宾语。
(1) You must listen to me.
(2) She is smiling at the little baby.

在某些及物动词的后面,需要用一个宾语再加一个状语,用来说明句中谓语动词的动作过程和状态等。
SVOO 主语+谓语(及物动词)+间接宾语+直接宾语
此句型中谓语动词必须跟两个宾语才能表达完整意思。两个宾语一个是动作的直接承受者,另一个是动作的间接承受者。

In the UK and the US, senior high school students take part in various after-school activities, such as club activities and volunteer work.
These activities not only help them gain more skills, but also teach them to care about others. After- school activities also play a part when students apply to college.
However, they can take up a lot of time, so students have to learn to organise their busy schedules.
To help them do this, some senior high schools offer courses in time management.

Maisie: Hi Bruno, how are you finding life at senior high?
Bruno: Oh, hi Maisie. Well, it’s OK, I guess. The one problem is that I just don’t seem to have enough time for everything. There are basketball games, the music club, the school party.
Maisie: Wow, you’ve got a lot on. But it’s more or less the same for me. And I find I always forget something.
Bruno: Me too. We need to do something about it. My father told me that I should make a to-do list. What do you think?
Maisie: It’s a good idea to list the things we’re going to do.
Listening & speaking:
Bruno: And how about recording the time it takes to do the activities? We can then see what takes up most of our time and make better plans. What’s your opinion?
Maisie: Great idea. And I've got two more ideas. Number one, only do one thing at a time. That way, you'll get things done more quickly. For example, if you do your homework while watching TV, it will just take longer to finish your homework. Number two, do important things first.
Bruno: Nice ideas!
Maisie: How about we try all of them for a week and see if things get better?
