Sandoval, who comes from Los Angeles, has traveled and filmed in over 50 countries across seven continents and now lives in China. “In 2008, tired of my studio work in the U.S, I came to China, thinking I would be here one or two years, but it has turned out to be 16 years!” he said. He hopes his photographs will inspire others to embark on adventures as well.
Sandoval is a professional photographer and learned commercial photography at what was then the Brooks Institute of Photography. With the hope of trying something different for himself, he went to Chengdu in Southwest China to live in October 2008 and has traveled throughout the country since then.
In the beginning, he did editorial work for magazines both in and outside Sichuan, such as Vogue. Then he worked with the Sichuan tourism department to produce travel brochures, and also on ad campaigns for destinations for corporate companies.
To him, Chengdu is the capital of a laid-back lifestyle. He was delighted to see that residents, dressed stylishly or comfortably, strolled in the streets “as slowly as snails”. Almost a “walking encyclopedia” of Chengdu, Sandoval covered every corner of Chengdu and recorded Chengduese and their lives with his camera, listening to the sound of mahjong tiles being shuffled and music from traditional stringed instruments.
He also goes from place to place with his heavy travel kit. The varied culture and vast, beautiful land has kept him in China much longer than he had planned in the beginning. He remembers a wide range of adventures like exploring a local vineyard and local wine in Yinchuan City, a riding performance by a Mongolian ethnic group in the Shuidonggou Horse Riding Show, and then the totally different experience of visiting the Hainan Free Trade Port in the south.
He thinks he has done a lot in “this beautiful and vast country” with his “travel photos”. “I try to show people the beauty of where I go. I try to inspire them to travel and go to places. I’m hoping to do more international work,” he said.

Just five minutes before closing time, she heard a staff member saying, “someone is having a seizure (癫痫)”: Walking quickly towards the staff member, Diana saw a fellow shopper on the ground. She had fallen and was lying on the floor, jerking uncontrollably. A small group of people had gathered to help the woman and a staff member called an ambulance. Scott McKenzie and Jeremy Uhrich, two dads from Huntingdon, have transformed their passion for baking into a heartwarming community effort. This journey began when McKenzie, 58, found himself laid off and decided to learn a new skill every week. Baking was one of these new skills, and he was pleasantly surprised by the quality of his first batch of cookies. Proudly, he shared his creation on social media, catching the attention of Uhrich,a longtime friend, who playfully challenged him to a bake-off.
Uhrich, 42, baked with his sons that same day and proposed a competition to McKenzie. The two agreed to let community workers in the community judge the treats as a thank-you for their help during the challenging times. The competition was a success, but McKenzie and Uhrich didn’t stop there. They decided to deliver the rest of the cookies to community workers, sparking an idea that would eventually become Cookies for Caregivers.

The day I met Hani Irmawati, she stood alone in the parking lot of the International school, a shy seventeen-year-old in worn clothing. Despite the school’s policy against Indonesian students, she approached me, begging to improve her English. When I inquired about her motivation, expecting a local job search, she quietly expressed her dream of attending an American university.
Moved by her determination, I volunteered to help her after school. Each day, Hani woke at dawn, studying on the bus to her public high school, then joining me in the afternoon, exhausted but eager to learn. Despite her struggles with college-level English, her perseverance amazed me.
Hani’s family lived modestly, her parents working as a custodian and a maid. Their income couldn’t support her American university aspirations, dampening my initial optimism.
In December 1998, a scholarship opportunity arose, but upon reviewing the requirements, I despaired. Hani lacked the extracurricular experience and standardized test scores typical of applicants. Despite my discouragement, she remained resolute, asking me to submit her application. Unable to refuse, I completed the application, highlighting her courage and perseverance. I warned her of slim acceptance odds, but she remained steadfast.
In the following weeks, Hani intensified her English studies, and I arranged for her to take the Test of English Fluency. The computerized test posed a significant challenge for her. Just before departing for the test, she received a letter from the scholarship association. I began reading the letter with her, only to discover she’d been accepted.

Sweat slips down my cheek as I glide (滑动) my fingers through the cool water. I’ve reached the turnaround point of the day’s kayaking (皮划艇) trip. I attempt a shoulder stretch and look around. It’s just me, a couple of seabirds, and shining freshwater to the horizon. This, I whisper to myself, is awesome.
Solo (独自的) outings had never crossed my mind before because I always had a friend with me. But three years ago, I moved to Cleveland. Meeting friends in a new city was tough.
In October 2020, I decided to take adventure on a solo hiking trip. I went to Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) to admire the autumn leaves. Four miles in, I couldn’t remember the last time I’d felt so alive. I was more aware of my surroundings than I’d ever been while hiking that day. I studied the markings of trees, focused my ears on each forest sound and did something I almost never made time for: I listened to my own thoughts. Every word bubble in my mind pointed to a newfound truth-solo hiking is my happy place.
When spring arrived, I decided to check off another solo sport: kayaking. My chest, initially tightened by nerves, was bursting with happiness when I finally reached the middle of the river that I’d long admired back on shore.
Since that first solo hiking, adventuring alone has become like medicine for me. It has also pushed me to go beyond my comfort zone and to meet new people.
In 1959, Handler changed how toy dolls were made when she introduced “Barbie” to the world. With her mature figure, Barbie was one of the first “grown-up” dolls to hit the retail market.
Handler wanted to create a toy that was different from the baby dolls that dominated little girls’ toy boxes. She wanted a doll that girls could project their future dreams upon and allowed for limitless clothing and career choices. Inspired by paper dolls of the time, Handler, to much disagreement, made sure Barbie had the body of a grown woman.
“My own philosophy of Barbie,” Handler wrote in her autobiography, “was that through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be. Barbie always represented the fact that a woman had choices.”
There’s even a Barbie for cancer patients — Brave Barbie — a partnership between Mattel and CureSearch that sends a bald (光头的) Barbie to families affected by cancer. “Gifting my daughter a Barbie who suffered from cancer was tremendous,” Michelle, a cancer survivor said, “We would play with that Barbie together and I’d heartbreakingly watch her pretend to take the doll to the hospital for chemo (化疗), or place its long wig on top of its head and tell the doll ‘It’s time to be beautiful again.’”
Bald Barbie was super brave and went on awesome adventures after chemo. Sometimes she felt sick and needed to sleep, but would feel much better after a rest. Bald Barbie always beat the cancer and went on to live a long and happy life with her family. That Barbie became so much more than a plastic doll — she was a means of communication and a coping mechanism during an extremely distressing time for little families.
33.Why did Handler create Barbie?
A.To make a hit in the retail market. B.To appeal to girls with her diverse outfits.
C.To do a project on women’s career choices. D.To inspire girls to make choices as they wish.
34.How might Michelle feel when watching her daughter with Brave Barbie?
A.Sad yet comforted. B.Envious yet proud.
C.Overwhelmed and ashamed. D.Heartbroken and regretful.
35.What does Brave Barbie mean to Michelle’s family?
A.A reliable emotional support. B.A glue for broken relationships.
C.An effective practical treatment. D.A secret medium of negotiation.
36.Where is the text probably taken from?
A.A medical journal. B.A charity brochure.
C.A financial report. D.A story collection.
I have always been proud of my handwriting, a skill I was taught in grade school. The teacher was teaching us the Palmer Penmanship Method, drilling into us the importance of forming big flowing lines when we wrote g’s and s’s as well as beautiful f’s that in my mind were like fairy tale princesses wearing fancy hats while extending their right foot. We were strictly prohibited from using block letters on our homework, as they lack the beauty.
Now it becomes apparent that young people no longer learn cursive(草书). They type everything, mostly on their phones. Beautiful handwriting is a thing of the past. This has become a source of great sadness among traditionalists.
But recently something happened that shook my faith in cursive. To my complete disbelief, not one but two of my close friends complained about the handwriting on my postcards. They were grateful for the beautiful postcards I regularly sent, but they said they honestly couldn't read a thing I had written. One friend went so far as to ask if I could use block letters next time so that she could understand what I was writing.
Initially, I was angry. I had made the effort to cover an entire postcard with what I viewed as not just handwriting but calligraphy. But then I showed an English friend a postcard I'd just written, and he said that the only thing that was readily understandable was the letters “U. S. A.” The rest of it, he politely suggested, looked like “chicken scrawl”.
Looking at the postcard dispassionately, I unwillingly admit that he has a point. All the m’s and n’s run together, and the l’s look like l’s. The a’s are indistinguishable from the q’s. So, from now on, I'm taking their advice and using block letters to communicate.
In fact, I just now sent an old friend a postcard. But this time, I simply wrote—in big block letters:
DEAR ALICE:
HI.
JOE.
I hope she gets the message.
37.What do we know about the Palmer Penmanship Method?
A.It is characterized by big flowing lines. B.It is rarely appreciated by traditionalists.

A.The popularity of block letters in recent times.
B.The younger generation’s disinterest in cursive.
C.His friends’ failure to comprehend his postcards.
D.His English friend's suggestion on postcard design.
39.Why did the writer switch to block letters for communication?
A.To deliver his message clearly. B.To improve his handwriting skills.
C.To win praise from his friends. D.To show his passion for calligraphy.
40.What is the text mainly about?
A.The wide use of cursive. B.The sad decline of cursive.

As a hockey parent, while watching my son played from Mite to Bantam, House League to Travel, I’ve learned that losing may be best for kids.
In his third season in 2019, my son’s team never lost more than three straight games. There was happiness, boasting, celebration, pizza. In short, it was a typically good youth hockey season. He improved as a player, but did not much change as a person.
However, what happened the next year added its story to the legends of sporting incompetence. Not merely weak but prettily bad, this team lost 40 of their first 50 games, most of the defeats coming in the course of two losing streaks. For a time, I worried that these streaks would kill my child’s love of the game.
But that’s not what happened. As bad as it got, the losing was clarifying. It weeded out the kids who were in it less for the game than the glory, leaving just the die-hards behind. What started as a list of 17 of the team was cut down to 12. It was especially instructive for the kids. It taught him a great truth of the world: For everyone good, there is someone better.
What’s more, the kids were learning the game in a way that only losing can teach. Each player got to play everywhere, to learn and appreciate the role of every position on the ice. They kept an eye on their opponents too, studying and incorporating the tricks of success. In an effort to break the streak, they went back to basics, accepted the wisdom of the hockey ancients: If playing like a team, they can defeat a collection of all-stars; If doing small and unappreciated tasks well, they can get the goal.
This new team had character and could never be counted out, no matter the score. They had learned the most important lesson: You can lose without being beaten. They squeaked into the state tournament, then made it all the way to the final, where the winner was decided in overtime. When they lost that game and went into the handshake line, it was not as runners-up but as a team that had been made into winners in the only way that will stick — by losing.
41.What does the author think about the son’s team in the third season in 2019?
A.The team had a bad performance.
B.The team didn’t live up to the author’s expectations.
C.The team played typically well and won all the games.
D.The team didn’t have the spirit of facing failure.
42.What does the underlined word “clarify” refer to?
A.The losing made the kids better understand hockey.
B.The losing helped the kids learn a great truth of the world.
C.The losing separated true player from those playing for glory.
D.The losing boosted the kids’ teamwork.
43.According to the author, what have the son’s team learned?
A.For everything big, there is something bigger.
B.Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.
C.God helps those who help themselves.
D.The hardest battle you’re going to fight is the battle to be just you.
44.What is the best title for the passage?
A.How Kids Can Deal With Losing B.What Kids Can Learn From Losing
C.Why Kids Can Benefit From Losing D.How Kids Can Get Over From Losing
My wife always wanted a Vizsla, so when we got the house, the garden and everything sorted, we did some research and found a lovely breeder (饲养员) based in Scotland. He was in charge of everything, so a few months go by and the next thing I know, we’ve got a puppy!
I’ve grown up with animals all my life, and I’m so glad I have. I love the fact that I was never afraid of any animals. Although you do obviously have to be careful when introducing children to a dog they don’t know, because you don’t know how it’s going to behave, it always saddens me when I see children scared when they walk past Pedro. I think it’s great for kids to learn how to look after an animal.
And obviously for us, as a family, it’s brilliant because we take Pedro for so many walks. It’s a bit of a family bonding experience getting out in the fresh air; taking Pedro for a walk multiple times a day is just really lovely. Meanwhile, the most rewarding, I think, is just seeing how amazing he is with the kids. He is so calm, so protective, so loving, and we are his world.
I think the most challenging aspects with Pedro were when he was a puppy (小狗). He was pretty hard work. He was never aggressive, but he was quite bitey as puppies are, constantly pulling out your clothes and putting holes in them, which is very annoying. He chewed the furniture-my sofas are barely standing up; their wooden legs are almost in pieces. Obviously, the dog training in the house was quite stressful and his jumping at strangers in the park and running off was always quite scary.
As a new puppy owner, you’re overloaded with advice from social media, magazines, other dog owners and friends, so finding a source of information you trust is so important and can be a real turning point. I know what it’s like to be bombarded with conflicting information, so I would have really welcomed Royal Canin’s “One in a Billion” platform as a new puppy owner. It’s a one-stop shop for new dog owners: a single source of credible information that is so helpful in navigating the early stages of your puppy’s life.

Have you heard of these four monuments?
Carhenge. Floralis Genérica. Traffic Light Tree. Hand of the Desert — these are four unusual monuments from around the world you might like to visit. • Carhenge
Carhenge is in Alliance, Nebraska (USA). As the name suggests, it has a lot in common with Stonehenge, the famous stone circle on Salisbury Plain. But while Stonehenge was built with stones, Carhenge was created with cars. The monument was made in 1987 by a local artist Jim Reinders and his family. He used old cars and even an ambulance. At first, the people of Alliance didn’t like it, but they soon changed their minds after it became popular with tourists, who brought lots of money to the town. • Floralis Genérica
Floralis Genérica is a massive statue of a flower. It stands in a pool of water in front of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Eduardo Catalano, a native of Argentina, gave the statue as a gift to the city in 2002. Every morning, the flower opens. Ask anyone who has seen it and they’ll tell you that watching it open is an unforgettable sight. In fact, many people believe it is one of the most beautiful statues in the world. • Traffic Light Tree
The Traffic Light Tree is situated at Heron Quay, in one of London’s financial districts. The tree has 75 sets of traffic lights. It was created by French artist, Pierre Vivant, and was installed in 1998. A computer controls the lights, which are turned on and off randomly. The roundabout where the tree is was voted the most popular roundabout in the UK in a recent survey. • Mano del Desierto (Hand of the Desert)
The Hand of the Desert is in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The sculpture was designed by the Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrazabal. From a distance, it looks as if there’s a giant in the sand who has stuck his hand out of the ground.
If you’re looking for something new to see, you know where to go!
49.Why did the people of Alliance change their attitude toward Carhenge?
A.It reminded them of Stonehenge. B.It brought them financial benefits.
C.It added beauty to their community. D.It displayed the creativity of the designer.
50.Which of the four monuments was designed by a foreign artist?
A.Carhenge. B.Floralis Genérica.
C.Traffic Light Tree. D.Mano del Desierto.
51.Where is the text probably from?

Five-year-old Mustafa is smiling for the first time in ages. She did not receive a new toy or her favorite candy; rather, she got a wig (假发).
Mustafa had to go through painful procedures after being diagnosed with cancer at an early age. Her father expressed her sadness when she lost her hair after months of chemotherapy (化疗). “She saw children of her age jumping in playgrounds and spending hours styling their hair, while she couldn’t. Losing her hair made her hopeless, negatively impacting her response to treatment,” the girl’s father said.
Coming from a less fortunate family, Mustafa now sits in a humble hairdresser’s in Cairo, sliding her fingers through her new long hair as she looks in the mirror with fresh enthusiasm. Behind that smile and renewed confidence is Salam, from Egypt, who has been personally funding and designing free wigs for children with cancer to give them power to defeat their illness.
Salam took up his mission when he saw a viral video on social media of a young cancer patient who was excited at receiving a new wig. It was the moment when he decided to provide free wigs to children with cancer to lift up their spirits. “Many families can barely afford expensive cancer treatment costs, let alone costly cosmetic services that can play a huge role in restoring children’s confidence and giving them strength to continue their treatment,” said Salam.
As part of the self-funded initiative, Salam purchases the necessary requirements to make a wig, while his father helps design hairstyles to serve different children. So far, Salam has helped over 15 children walk out of his shop empowered with big smiles.
Despite the several challenges, Salam said making wigs gives him as much happiness as it does for his young customers. “Children need the emotional and moral support to go through this tough illness.” He added, “Losing their hair drives them to withdraw into themselves out of fear and embarrassment. I cannot help in their treatment, but I can help them get through it.”
55.Why are a toy and candy mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.To indicate the girl’s age. B.To imply a serious illness.
C.To show the shortage of toys and candies. D.To highlight the value of the wig.
56.What can be learned from the father’s words?
A.Hairstyle matters much. B.Sports benefit Mustafa.
C.Hair loss depressed Mustafa. D.Mustafa’s treatment failed.
57.What led to Salam’s decision on the mission?
A.His sympathy. B.Family support.
C.Government fund. D.Mustafa’s enthusiasm.
58.What kind of person is Salam according to the passage?
A.Cautious and innovative. B.Inspiring and talented.
C.Sensitive and empathetic. D.Ambitious and sensible.

13.Why did Sandoval come to China?
A.He was not good at studio work. B.He wanted to step out of the comfort zone.
C.He had a preference for international work. D.He was attracted by the picturesque nature of China.
14.What does the underlined word “laid-back” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Leisurely. B.Simple. C.Luxurious. D.Healthy.
15.Sandoval’s experiences around China are mentioned in Paragraph 5 to show _______.
A.Sandoval’s diverse hobbies B.Sandoval’s desire for new careers
C.Sandoval’s superb photo technique D.Sandoval’s fascination for Chinese culture
16.What is the writing purpose of this passage?
A.To call on readers to take up photography.
B.To praise Sandoval for spreading Chinese culture.
C.To facilitate the development of tourism in Chengdu.
D.To introduce the experience of a professional photographer.
【答案】13.B 14.A 15.D 16.D
根据第二段中“With the hope of trying something different for himself, he went to Chengdu in Southwest China to live in October 2008 and has traveled throughout the country since then. (2008年10月,怀揣着尝试一些不同的东西的希望,他去了中国西南部的成都生活,从那时起,他就在全国各地旅行)”可知,Sandoval到中国来是因为他想走出自己的舒适区,尝试一些不同的东西。故选B项。
14.词句猜测题。根据画线词的下文“He was delighted to see that residents, dressed stylishly or comfortably, strolled in the streets “as slowly as snails”. (他很高兴看到居民们穿着时髦或舒适,在街上“像蜗牛一样慢”地散步)”可知,成都的居民们非常自如地在街上慢慢地散步。由此可知,当地的生活方式是悠闲的,画线词意思应该是“悠闲的,闲散的”,与Leisurely意思相近。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中“The varied culture and vast, beautiful land has kept him in China much longer than he had planned in the beginning. He remembers a wide range of adventures like exploring a local vineyard and local wine in Yinchuan City, a riding performance by a Mongolian ethnic group in the Shuidonggou Horse Riding Show, and then the totally different experience of visiting the Hainan Free Trade Port in the south. (多样的文化和广袤美丽的土地使他在中国停留的时间比他最初计划的要长得多。他记得各种各样的冒险经历,比如在银川市探索当地的葡萄园和当地的葡萄酒,在水洞沟骑马表演中观看蒙古民族的骑马表演,然后参观南方海南自由贸易港的完全不同的体验)”可推知,这里提到了Sandoval在中国的经历,以显示他对中国文化的迷恋。故选D项。
16.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Sandoval, who comes from Los Angeles, has traveled and filmed in over 50 countries across seven continents and now lives in China.

The timing couldn’t have been more crucial—the community had recently experienced a terrible earthquake, leaving many homes destroyed and families displaced. As part of the rebuilding efforts, a Facebook group, Cookies for Caregivers was born. McKenzie and Uhrich allowed their neighbors to volunteer to make treats for first responders and business owners who were working tirelessly in the aftermath of the earthquake. Since the disaster struck, more than 100 people have joined the group, baking and delivering more than 15,000 cookies to workers at hospitals, grocery stores, fire departments, and more.

Overjoyed, I celebrated while Hani stood quietly, perhaps bewildered by my shock. In that moment, I realized what Hani had known all along: success requires not just intelligence, but also the drive to persevere and the courage to believe in oneself.

A.Hani’s parents were unsupportive of her dream.
B.Hani was uninterested in extracurricular activities.
C.Hani’s application form was not submitted on time.
D.Hani was not academically qualified for the scholarship.
27.How did the author likely feel upon discovering Hani’s acceptance to the scholarship?
A.Surprised and proud. B.Relieved but envious.
C.Touched and honored. D.Shocked but concerned.

Through meetups and social media, my adventure-friend circle has ballooned. But at least once per month, I schedule time to hit nature with my favorite friend: me.

31.How did the author feel after her first kayaking trip?
A.Surprised. B.Delighted. C.Nervous. D.Lonely.
32.What does the underlined word “ballooned” in the last paragraph mean?
A.restarted B.transformed C.disappeared D.expanded

【答案】33.D 34.A 35.A 36.D
根据第二段的“She wanted a doll that girls could project their future dreams upon and allowed for limitless clothing and career choices. (她想要一个女孩们可以投射未来梦想的娃娃,并允许无限的服装和职业选择)”和第三段的“the little girl could be anything she wanted to be. Barbie always represented the fact that a woman had choices.(通过这个娃娃,小女孩可以成为任何她想成为的人。芭比娃娃一直代表着女性拥有选择权的事实)”可推知, Handler创造Barbie的目的是让激励女孩根据自己的意愿做出选择。故选D。
34.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段的““Gifting my daughter a Barbie who suffered from cancer was tremendous,” Michelle, a cancer survivor said, “We would play with that Barbie together and I’d heartbreakingly watch her pretend to take the doll to the hospital for chemo (化疗), or place its long wig on top of its head and tell the doll ‘It’s time to be beautiful again.’”(“送给我患癌症的女儿一个芭比娃娃真是太棒了,”癌症幸存者米歇尔说,“给我的女儿一个患了癌症的芭比娃娃是一件非常美妙的事情。我们会一起玩那个芭比娃娃,我心碎地看着她假装带着芭比娃娃去医院化疗,或者把它的长假发戴在它的头上,告诉它‘是时候变漂亮了’”)”可推知,Michelle看到女儿和Brave Barbie一起感到欣慰的同时也很难过。故选A。
根据最后一段的“Bald Barbie always beat the cancer and went on to live a long and happy life with her family. That Barbie became so much more than a plastic doll — she was a means of communication and a coping mechanism during an extremely distressing time for little families.(秃头芭比总是战胜癌症,并继续与她的家人过着漫长而幸福的生活。芭比娃娃不仅仅是一个塑料娃娃——她是一个沟通的工具,也是一个在小家庭极度痛苦时期的应对机制)”可推知,Brave Barbie对于米歇尔一家而言是可靠的情感支持,帮助女儿和这个家庭应对极度痛苦的阶段。故选A。
C.It was not allowed in students'homework. D.It is viewed as a trend in handwriting styles.
38.What weakened the writer’s belief in cursive?
A.The popularity of block letters in recent times.
B.The younger generation’s disinterest in cursive.
C.His friends’ failure to comprehend his postcards.
D.His English friend's suggestion on postcard design.
39.Why did the writer switch to block letters for communication?
A.To deliver his message clearly. B.To improve his handwriting skills.
C.To win praise from his friends. D.To show his passion for calligraphy.
40.What is the text mainly about?
A.The wide use of cursive. B.The sad decline of cursive.
C.The value of preserving cursive. D.The technique of writing in cursive.
【答案】37.A 38.C 39.A 40.B
根据第一段中“The teacher was teaching us the Palmer Penmanship Method, drilling into us the importance of forming big flowing lines when we wrote g’s and s’s as well as beautiful f’s that in my mind were like fairy tale princesses wearing fancy hats while extending their right foot.”(老师正在教我们帕尔默书法法,在我们写g和s以及美丽的f时,向我们灌输形成大而流畅的线条的重要性,在我的脑海中,f就像童话故事中的公主戴着华丽的帽子,同时伸出右脚)可知,帕尔默书法它的特点是线条大而流畅。故选A项。
根据第三段中“But recently something happened that shook my faith in cursive. To my complete disbelief, not one but two of my close friends complained about the handwriting on my postcards. They were grateful for the beautiful postcards I regularly sent, but they said they honestly couldn't read a thing I had written.”(但最近发生的一件事动摇了我对草书的信心。
根据倒数第二段“Looking at the postcard dispassionately, I unwillingly admit that he has a point. All the m’s and n’s run together, and the l’s look like l’s. The a’s are indistinguishable from the q’s. So, from now on, I'm taking their advice and using block letters to communicate.”(冷静地看着明信片,我不情愿地承认他说得有道理。 故选A项。
根据文章大意以及第二段“Now it becomes apparent that young people no longer learn cursive. They type everything, mostly on their phones. Beautiful handwriting is a thing of the past. This has become a source of great sadness among traditionalists.”(现在很明显,年轻人不再学草书了。
【答案】41.D 42.C 43.A 44.B
根据第二段“In his third season in 2019, my son’s team never lost more than three straight games. There was happiness, boasting, celebration, pizza. In short, it was a typically good youth hockey season. He improved as a player, but did not much change as a person.(2019年是我儿子的第三个赛季,他所在的球队从未输过3场以上的比赛。有快乐,有吹嘘,有庆祝,有披萨。简而言之,这是一个典型的优秀青年曲棍球赛季。作为一名球员,他有了进步,但作为一个人,他并没有太大的变化)”可知,2019年的第三个赛季,作者儿子的球队非常优秀,虽然失败过,但是还是很开心,并没有真正体会到失败带给他们的影响。由此推知,作者认为儿子的球队缺乏面对失败的精神。故选D。
42.指代猜测题。根据划线单词下文“It weeded out the kids who were in it less for the game than the glory, leaving just the die-hards behind.(它淘汰了那些不是为了比赛,而是为了荣誉的孩子,只留下了顽固分子)”可知,虽然孩子的球队比赛失败,但是失败让一切变得很明朗,因为这淘汰了那些不是为了比赛,而是为了荣誉的孩子,只留下了顽固分子。
根据最后一段中的“They had learned the most important lesson: You can lose without being beaten. They squeaked into the state tournament, then made it all the way to the final, where the winner was decided in overtime. When they lost that game and went into the handshake line, it was not as runners-up but as a team that had been made into winners in the only way that will stick — by losing.(他们学到了最重要的一课:你可以输但不被打败。他们勉强进入州锦标赛,然后一路进入决赛,在加时赛中决出冠军。当他们输掉比赛,进入握手的行列时,他们并不是作为亚军,而是作为一支以唯一的方式——失败——成为赢家的球队)”可知,作者儿子的团队虽然失败了,但他们不断进步,不断面对更大的挑战,成为更好的自己。由此可推知,作者认为,孩子们学到的教训是:对于强大的挑战,要不断进步,因为总有更大挑战在等着你。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“I’ve learned that losing may be best for kids.(我明白了输球对孩子来说可能是最好的)”和最后一段中的“They had learned the most important lesson: You can lose without being beaten. They squeaked into the state tournament, then made it all the way to the final, where the winner was decided in overtime. When they lost that game and went into the handshake line, it was not as runners-up but as a team that had been made into winners in the only way that will stick — by losing.(他们学到了最重要的一课:你可以输但不被打败。他们勉强进入州锦标赛,然后一路进入决赛,在加时赛中决出冠军。当他们输掉比赛,进入握手的行列时,他们并不是作为亚军,而是作为一支以唯一的方式——失败——成为赢家的球队)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者的孩子和其队友打曲棍球,他们从不断的失败中学到了一些教训。由此可知,B选项“What Kids Can Learn From Losing(孩子们能从失败中学到什么)”适合作文章最佳标题。
45.What do we know about the author?
A.He is inexperienced in raising pets.
B.He is unsupportive of his wife’s desire.
C.He feels it a pity that children shy away from pets.
D.He thinks one should be cautious about raising pets.
46.How does the author think of Pedro?
A.Dangerous but loyal. B.Playful and gentle.
C.Adorable but troublesome. D.Annoying and fierce.
47.What can we infer according to paragraph 4?
A.Dogs are man’s best friends.
B.It is worthless to have a dog.
C.Puppies are unfriendly to humans.
D.It is challenging to train a puppy.
48.What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To recommend a reliable platform.
B.To share a fun experience.
C.To offer evidence for an argument.
D.To advertise a practical product.
【答案】45.C 46.C 47.D 48.A

由文章第二段中“Although you do obviously have to be careful when introducing children to a dog they don’t know, because you don’t know how it’s going to behave, it always saddens me when I see children scared when they walk past Pedro. I think it’s great for kids to learn how to look after an animal. (虽然当你把孩子介绍给他们不认识的狗时,显然必须小心,因为你不知道它会怎么表现,但当我看到孩子们走过佩德罗时害怕的时候,我总是很难过。我认为让孩子们学习如何照顾动物是很好的。)”可知,作者对于孩子们因不了解而害怕宠物感到遗憾。故选C。
46.推理判断题。由文章第三段中“Meanwhile, the most rewarding, I think, is just seeing how amazing he is with the kids. He is so calm, so protective, so loving, and we are his world. (与此同时,我认为最有意义的是,看到他和孩子们相处得有多好。他很冷静,很有保护欲,很有爱心,我们就是他的世界。)”和第四段中“He was never aggressive, but he was quite bitey as puppies are, constantly pulling out your clothes and putting holes in them, which is very annoying. He chewed the furniture-my sofas are barely standing up; their wooden legs are almost in pieces. Obviously, the dog training in the house was quite stressful and his jumping at strangers in the park and running off was always quite scary. (他从来没有攻击性,但他像小狗一样爱咬,经常把你的衣服扯出来,在上面咬出洞,这很烦人。他咬家具——我的沙发几乎立不住;木腿几乎都碎了。显然,在家里训练狗的压力很大,在公园里它对着陌生人跳来跳去然后跑开,总是让人很害怕。)”可知,作者认为Pedro可爱但麻烦。故选C。

48.推理判断题。由文章最后一段“As a new puppy owner, you’re overloaded with advice from social media, magazines, other dog owners and friends, so finding a source of information you trust is so important and can be a real turning point. I know what it’s like to be bombarded with conflicting information, so I would have really welcomed Royal Canin’s “One in a Billion” platform as a new puppy owner. 故选A。

【答案】55.D 56.C 57.A 58.C
根据第一段中“Five-year-old Mustafa is smiling for the first time in ages. She did not receive a new toy or her favorite candy; rather, she got a wig (假发).(五岁的穆斯塔法这么多年来第一次露出了笑容。她没有收到新玩具或她最喜欢的糖果;相反,她得到了一顶假发。)”以及第二段中“Mustafa had to go through painful procedures after being diagnosed with cancer at an early age. Her father expressed her sadness when she lost her hair after months of chemotherapy (化疗). (穆斯塔法在很小的时候就被诊断出患有癌症,不得不经历痛苦的手术。数月化疗后,她的头发掉光了,她父亲表达了她的悲伤。)”可知,穆斯塔法因为被诊断患有癌症,经过数月的化疗后头发掉光了,因此相比于收到新玩具或者最喜欢的糖果,收到一顶假发对她来说是更有意义的。故第一段提到了玩具和糖果是为了突出假发的价值。故选D。
56.推理判断题。根据第二段中““She saw children of her age jumping in playgrounds and spending hours styling their hair, while she couldn’t. Losing her hair made her hopeless, negatively impacting her response to treatment,” the girl’s father said.(她看到和她同龄的孩子在操场上蹦蹦跳跳,花上几个小时做发型,而她却不能。失去头发让她绝望,对她的治疗产生了负面影响,”女孩的父亲说。)”可知,看到别的孩子在操场上蹦蹦跳跳,花上几个小时做发型,而穆斯塔法却不能,失去头发让她绝望,对她的治疗产生了负面影响即失去头发让她极度沮丧。故选C。

It was the moment when he decided to provide free wigs to children with cancer to lift up their spirits.(萨拉姆在社交媒体上看到了一段走红的视频,视频中一位年轻的癌症患者因获得新假发而兴奋不已,于是他开始了自己的使命。 故选A。
根据第四段中“Salam took up his mission when he saw a viral video on social media of a young cancer patient who was excited at receiving a new wig. It was the moment when he decided to provide free wigs to children with cancer to lift up their spirits.(萨拉姆在社交媒体上看到了一段走红的视频,视频中一位年轻的癌症患者因获得新假发而兴奋不已,于是他开始了自己的使命。就在那一刻,他决定为患癌症的孩子们提供免费的假发,让他们振作起来。)”可知,萨拉姆在社交媒体上看到了年轻的癌症患者因获得新假发而兴奋不已,就是在这一刻他决定为患癌症的孩子们提供免费的假发,他对那些因为癌症进行化疗而失去头发的孩子们是同情和理解,由此表明他是一个情感上敏感的人;同时根据最后一段中““Children need the emotional and moral support to go through this tough illness.” He added, “Losing their hair drives them to withdraw into themselves out of fear and embarrassment. I cannot help in their treatment, but I can help them get through it.”(“孩子们需要情感和精神上的支持来度过这场艰难的疾病。”他补充说:“脱发会让她们出于恐惧和尴尬而封闭自己。我不能帮助他们治疗,但我可以帮助他们度过难关。”)”可知,萨拉姆克服困难,在情感上和精神上去帮助和支持那些因为癌症化疗而掉发的孩子们,体现出他是善良并善解人意的。故选C。
