Being overly emotional may mean reacting to negative feelings quickly instead of letting your intelligence weigh in. Chances are that you are relating to your emotions in a way that isn’t always constructive if you feel overly emotional. 1 Here are approaches to make it.
Identify your emotions. It’s important to know what you feel so that you can address each emotion appropriately. 2 If you feel anger, for instance, you may start to notice your breathing quickening, your muscles tensing, or your skin feeling flushed. If you’re happy, you may notice smiling or feelings of lightness in your limbs.
Interpret each emotion’s message. 3 For instance, you may feel anxiety as a way to express fear of something. Emotions can set off emotional or physical perceived stressors that we choose to move toward or away from. When your emotions come up, ask them what they are conveying to you.
Increase your empathy (共情). Empathy means observing your emotions less but the emotions of those around you more. If you find yourself focusing largely on your own emotions, take a step back and notice the emotions of the people around you. 4 Increasing your empathy helps you relate to people more effectively, respect their emotional experience, and take the spotlight off of yourself.
5 Sometimes it’s difficult to relate to your emotions positively or cannot find ways to control your emotions. A therapist (治疗师) can help you process your difficult emotions while also providing an opportunity for you to release your emotions in a positive and constructive way. Your therapist should be someone you can trust and with whom you are comfortable sharing personal or embarrassing things.
A.Turn to professional aid.
B.Challenge your negative emotions.
C.Often, you feel emotions as a communication system.
D.However, it’s vital to listen to your emotions in beneficial ways.
E.Consider their emotional experience and recognize how they feel.
F.Reflect on how your body reacts when you notice an emotion coming through.
G.It means you allow your thoughts to come and observe them without judgement.
In a world that often feels fast-paced and restrained to routines, the desire for van (房车) life and mobile living has captured the hearts of many seeking an alternative lifestyle. 6 From the freedom to explore new horizons to fostering a minimalist mindset, here are some captivating advantages of embracing van life.
Liberation from Materialism
The confined space of a van encourages a minimalist lifestyle, where experiences are valued over possessions. 7 With minimal monthly expenses, such as parking fees and fuel costs, van dwellers can allocate resources to experiences rather than high rent or house payments. This mobile living is supported by the degrowth movement, which believes that economies should focus on securing the minimal basic needs instead of consumption and consumerism.
Exploration and Flexibility
The ability to follow adventure wherever it takes you is one of the most amazing aspects of living in a van. You can choose to wake up at dawn over the ocean one day and find yourself in a forested mountainside the next. Living in a van frequently involves being close to the outdoors surrounded by the beauty of nature. 8
Minimal Ecological Footprint
9 They adopt solar panels and efficient water systems , further minimizing their impact on the environment. People who choose to live in mobile homes believe that eventually, global warming and extreme weather might bring an end to sedentary (定居的) living patterns.
Through the open road, the beauty of nature, and the friendship of fellow adventurers, van life presents a unique avenue for enriching the human experience. 10
A.It’s thrilling to travel the world.
B.Many van lifers tend to go green.
C.Living in a van can often be more cost-effective.
D.They’ll find a sense of freedom of constant exploration.
E.The natural world becomes an essential part of your daily life
F.Better yet, it offers a way to reconnect with the essence of living.
G.The concept of van life offers benefits beyond just a change of scenery.
When students get home, they usually sit down at the table and pull out their homework. Piles of papers rise all the way to the ceiling. American students should get less homework on a daily basis. 11
Loads of homework can cause stress in a student and lead to health issues in the body and mind. Stress causes lack of sleep, slipping grades, tiredness, unhealthy eating habits, depression, and so on. Nervous breakdowns can make completing homework much more of a struggle and also effect the health and life of a student.
12 The recommended amount is 10 minutes times the grade level. So first grade gets 10 minutes; second grade gets 20 minutes; third grade gets 30 minutes, and so on, but kids are doing much more than that. Twenty three percent of 13-year-olds do more than 2 hours a night. 13 There is no academic benefit for high school students after 2 hours and there are no academic benefits for middle school students after 1 and a half hours.
Doing homework all night can take away a student’s free time and sleep. Always doing homework can lead to less time for sports and after-school activities. 14 Worse still, hanging out with friends is decreased, so that means there is less socializing. Staying up late and doing homework takes away a student’s time to sleep. Not enough sleep can leave students tired, and at school they might focus less or fall asleep during class.
Shouldn’t students get less homework so that they can be happy and have more time with family and friends? 15 If teachers and parents tried to reduce the amount of homework, there would be a decrease in stress and anxiety and an increase in happiness!
A.Lack of sleep can cause great stress.
B.The more the students do, the less they get out of doing it.
C.Administrators, teachers, and parents need to address this issue.
D.Family time is also decreased, which can add more family conflict.
E.Homework-related anxiety and stress can affect school work negatively.
F.Kids are doing more than the recommended amount with no academic benefits.
G.Anyway, too much homework can cause quite a few physical and mental problems.
Hard work has been part of every laureate’s journey towards the Nobel Prize. Many examples. Francoise Barré-Sinoussi spent time in the lab on the morning of her wedding. After Michael Brown’s first daughter was born, he went straight back to discuss the next day’s experiments. Early-career scientists often ask laureates (获奖者) about work-life balance. 16
Spend time with your family and friends. Many laureates stress the value of maintaining personal relationships. Doctor Brian Kobilka was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. 17 However, despite a heavy workload, he also made time for his family. As Brian Kobilka explains, family provides essential support.
Sleep well at night. 18 It is therefore tempting to finish work before health-promoting activities. However, this is a trap which Oliver Smithies advises against. Not only is sleep needed to stay healthy, but your brain needs sleep to function at full capacity so you can generate ideas and solve problems.
19 Family, work and sleep are all important to a scientist’s success. But they don’t all have to be a constant focus. Sometimes it will be important to avoid maintaining everything at a high level. Don’t be daunted by the idea you have to do everything perfectly at once — you can have a different focus at different times.
Don’t work too hard. Ultimately, working too hard won’t be beneficial. Not only do you risk burning yourself out, but you are also restricted in your thinking. Taking time away from work can allow you to approach problems in a new way. 20 Laureates often point out that working long hours doesn’t always lead to efficiency.
A.My solutions may be of some help.
B.Their answers can be enlightening.
C.Focus on different aspects of your life.
D.Never hesitate to bravely rise to challenge.
E.Sleep, exercise and eating well can all conflict with working long hours.
F.He would moonlight in an emergency room as well as working in the lab.
G.Going for a walk, for example, gives you the chance to take a step back and see things differently.
Do you have sweaty palms when you are sitting in the exam hall? Do worrying thoughts keep you awake at night? You may have experienced one of these on certain occasions. 21 Here are three simple “first-aid” techniques that could make a difference.
Sit at your bed
Do you jump out of bed the moment the alarm rings every morning? Perhaps the next time you get up in the morning, you can try this. Slowly get up and sit at your bed for a few minutes. 22 The important thing is not to let any hurried thoughts clutter your mind. In these few quiet minutes to yourself, you will be able to feel refreshed.
23
On many occasions, we have our handphones right next to the served food, and our eyes are busy with the world within these tiny devices. Such actions seem to be the perfect recipe for an overworked brain.
Instead, take mealtime as a time to enjoy your food. Slow down and let your eyes feast on the different colors, and allow your tongue to taste the variety of flavors. 24 It also helps you to feel more relaxed.
Get moving
Playing sports such as basketball, soccer or simply going for a run helps reduce the body’s stress hormones and instead stimulates the production of endorphins that lift your mood. 25 All you have to do is to ensure you incorporate a regular routine of exercise of low to moderate intensity. This will also help you feel more energized and healthy, besides ridding you of stress and anxiety.
These are the ways you can achieve harmony with your body and mind, and feel less anxious and stressed. Give them a try. Your mind will thank you for it.
A.Eat mindfully
B.Exercise regularly
C.Let the body and mind feel the peace.
D.There is no need for you to become a gym rat.
E.It helps you to be conscious of the food you put in your mouth.
F.This, in turn, has the effect of bringing your body into a state of deep relaxation.
G.It is a sign that anxiety is creeping up on you, and your brain is nudging you for help.
Green Is Good
Planting and growing things offers a lot more than fresh vegetables and flowers. Working in a nice outdoor space can help you control weight, help you stay fit, and sharpen your mind – and that’s just for starters. There are more advantages. It’s a fun workout.
26 But if you find the idea of working in a garden a bit dull, knowing it’s doing you good physically might make it more entertaining. You plant seeds, pull up weeds, move pots, and push a lawnmower etc. 27 Even better, whatever your age, it is an activity with a purpose – and one that might keep you in motion longer than traditional exercise. It reduces your risk of heart disease.
Even though gardening may not involve high-intensity exercise, it still provides heart-health benefits. 28 The benefits come from a combination of physical exercise and the stress reduction that ‘playing in the dirt’ provides.
29
Having dirt under your fingernails may be a sign of poor hygiene (卫生), but scientists say it could also be a mark of good health. Thanks to beneficial bacteria found in soil, gardening may improve your immune system, helping you get sick less and fight off infections easier, according to research that includes a 2015 study published in the international journal Immuno Targets and Therapy. It increases co-ordination (配合) and strength.
Hand and finger strength, flexibility and coordination are essential for everyday tasks like opening jars, carrying packages and picking up children. 30
A.It boosts your immune system.
B.It helps you stay fit physically and psychologically.
C.In fact, gardening can contribute to reducing the risk of a heart attack.
D.It’s wonderful to get out in the garden on a beautiful day to give it a tidy.
E.Gardening is a great way to maintain those fine motor (肌肉运动的) skills and muscles.
F.The gardening tasks actually provide a whole-body workout for adults over 65 years old.
G.More than just good exercise for your body, gardening provides a workout for your brain.
How to Build a Habit
Building good habits takes tremendous effort and insight. 31 Here are some research-backed steps that can set you on the path from where you are to where you want to be.
Set a specific goal
The way you define the goal you hope to turn into a habit does matter. Goals such as “meditate regularly” are too abstract, research has shown. 32 Don’t say “I’ll meditate regularly.” Say, “I’ll mediate for 15 minutes each day.” Having a bite-size objective makes it easier to get started and easier to see your progress.
Create a detailed, cue-based plan
Scientists have proven that you’ll make more progress toward your goal if you decide not just what you’ll do, but when you’ll be cued to do it, as well as where you’ll do it and how you’ll get there. A plan like “I’ll study Spanish for 30 minutes, five days a week” is OK. But a detailed, cue-based plan like “Every workday after my last meeting, I’ll spend 30 minutes studying Spanish in my office” is much more likely to stick as a habit. 33 Because the when and where in your plan will serve as cues to action that jog your memory.
34
When we set out to build a new habit, most of us overestimate our willpower and set a course for the most efficient path to achieving our end goal. But research has shown you’ll persist longer and ultimately achieve more if you instead focus on finding ways to make goal pursuit fun.
Foster flexibility
35 But when you’re in the start-up phase of habit building, it’s important to insert some variability deliberately into your routine. A flexible habit means you can still do what you need to even when a wrench is thrown in your first best plans— say, a traffic jam on the way to dropping the kids off at school that gets in the way of your morning meditation.
A.Make it fun to repeat.
B.Find the right kind of social support.
C.We frequently repeat our behaviors, forming habits at our own speed.
D.Making this kind of plan reduces the chances you’ll forget to follow through.
E.By the time we put a behavior on autopilot, a lot of us fall into fairly consistent routines.
F.You’ll benefit from being more specific about what exactly you aim to do and how often.
G.Thankfully, science offers both guidance on how to begin and strategies to lighten your lift.
Is a moviegoer different than a movie-lover? I’d say so. You can love a movie by watching it at home. 36 . I’ve spent a lot of time talking to people about movies. By listening to what they say, I can report they only share one thing in common: they go out.
I’ve thought about two views of the moviegoer lately.
The first view comes from Roland Barthes. Most often, his moviegoers don’t go to the movies for a distinct purpose. 37 . They are bored. Once they get inside, they can’t help but sink into a relaxed state. When they leave the movie theater, these moviegoers don’t want to talk to anyone about the movie. 38 . Barthes sees them as a lonely being, one who is introspective (自省的). I think some of us use movie theaters to retreat inside ourselves.
The second view comes from the Clark Theater manager, Bruce Trinz. When people go to the movies they go for a certain personal motive. They may want to forget something, or escape from the lives they are leading. Or they may want to see a film they liked years ago. 39 , they are the hopeless addicts who, quite simply, like movies. The only thing I would challenge in this definition is the word hopeless. 40 , but they come to the movies filled with hope. They may not be able to define what they hope to experience, but they will know it when they feel it.
A.Whatever motive they have
B.To be a moviegoer, you have to go out
C.The movie also puts them somewhere else
D.They are instead wrapped up in themselves
E.Because moviegoers go in search of beauty
F.Moviegoers may be hopelessly addicted to the movies
G.It’s something to do with a response to leisure, free time
I run a lot of writing workshops in secondary schools and what I often see is this: teenagers in class just look at the blank page and freeze. Even when I assure them they can’t get it wrong in creative writing, they still pause and feel painful, looking to me for clear and definite instructions. This behavior results from their training to mimic (模仿). 41 In time, they are terrified of getting things wrong and risking failure. Creativity is no longer advocated and is even viewed as a soft skill, or even a weakness.
However, creativity is highly valued by employers. According to The Conversation, creativity has been the number-one skill demanded by 20 million job ads on LinkedIn for two years in a row. 42 Due to limited educational resources and assessment pressures, teenagers’ thinking becomes increasingly narrow, leaving them afraid to explore other possibilities.
43 It’s just an ability to make new connections and follow where they go. Actually, creativity requires qualities available to us all: courage, observation, curiosity, flexibility and perseverance.
So how do we help teenagers be hopeful and brave? Firstly, we need to avoid the idea that their entire futures depend on this very assignment or that decision. 44 There is no right way to live a life. Secondly, let’s encourage inquiry. Children are naturally curious, but this curiosity often fades as they grow older, although it still exists within them. Just because they lack answers doesn’t mean they shouldn’t ask questions; rather, they should ask even more. 45
Young people need reminding that their stories haven’t been written. They need opportunities to try new things. They need permission to keep asking “what else is possible?” because anything is.
A.But in schools, it is different.
B.Being creative isn’t a magical skill.
C.It allows us to understand their feelings better.
D.They know it is a safe way to get good grades.
E.The main problem is how to keep those creative juices flowing.
F.Life is long enough to try many things, and to change directions.
G.The universe is held together with unanswered questions and endless possibilities.
Dear Fresher, joining a university can be a pleasant but challenging experience: horrific and yet beautiful, scary but exciting. 46
Do not panic if, like me, you do not make friends on the first day or week. Before I met Sanaa, I had tried to force myself to make friends with classmates in my other majors. Then I was starting to get convinced that there was something wrong with me. 47 Eventually, when I started making more friends, it made sense why the friendships I had forced did not work out. It was my first lesson in understanding my uniqueness, and reminding me that my “friends” are somewhere, out there. 48
So, dear Fresher, as I say welcome to university life, I am also saying, give yourself time-to understand your school, your course, and your new rhythm of life. Do not fall into the trap of people-pleasing to fit in.
49 Of course, you must leave room to grow and breathe- to discover amazing cultures, new accents, and new ways of matching your clothes-but do not do anything that needs you to abandon your genuine self in order to become.
Finally, it might not look like it, but the four, five, or six years you will be in university will pass by really quickly. 50 Perhaps that is DIYs, writing blog posts, participating in club activities in your department, or joining the dance troupe.
So, dear Fresher, go forward, and leave your mark! You will be surprised at how much experience that will contribute to your CV.
A.It is a big turn on the pages of your life.
B.Extracurricular activities build confidence.
C.I no longer struggle too hard to fit square pegs into round holes.
D.It is a good idea for you to make friends with like-minded people.
E.That was why I got uninspired by every friendship I tried to make.
F.While the new phase of life is challenging, remember who you truly are.
G.Seek out opportunities to do stuff you are passionate about during your free time.
Did you grow up in one culture, your parents came from another, and you are now living in a totally different country? 51
The term “third-culture kids” was invented in the 1960s by U.S. sociologist Dr. Ruth Hill Useem. She first encountered this phenomenon when she researched North American children living in India. 52 Caught between two cultures, they form their own. While growing up as third-culture kids may sound challenging, these children often benefit from their multicultural background. In general, they often reach excellent academic results. 53
Ginny, aged 20, was born in the U.K. Since her early childhood, she had lived abroad moving around with her parents every few years, before she returned to the U.K. to study. When returning to the U.K. to go to university, she realized she had benefited a lot from her years overseas. 54 While many other undergrads seemed unable to cope on their college life, she was easy to adjust to it.
Yet being a third-culture kid is not always easy. In fact, many hardships may arise from this phenomenon. A third-culture kid may not be able to adapt themselves completely to their new surroundings as expected. 55 Besides, when they return home, the home country can prove to be more foreign than anything they came across before. The peer group they face does not match the idealized image children have of “home”. This often makes it hard for them to form their own identity.
As a part of the growing “culture”, TCKs may find it a great challenge for them to feel at home in many places.
A.If so, then you are a third-culture kid!
B.About 90 percent of them have a university degree.
C.The languages picked up abroad were really useful.
D.The only problem was that she caught the travel bug.
E.After many years, these kids still could not adapt to their host culture.
F.Instead, they may always remain an outsider in different host cultures.
G.These children often get along well with those who suffer from the same confusion.
How to overcome travel anxiety
Stress and anxiety around documents and procedures of travel is common. Here are some tips from experts on how to overcome travel anxiety and enjoy your holiday or trip.
56 To be able to best cope with your travel anxiety, you need to have a good understanding of the things that actually cause it. Once you understand what triggers your anxiety, you can plan ahead for the best ways to handle it.
Plan out your trip details. One of the reasons for your travel anxiety is that you’re being taken out of your comfort zone and won’t have full control over everything. 57 That will give you a sense of control. However, it’s equally important to think of alternative plans for anything that could potentially not go as planned.
Make use of different relaxation techniques. 58 Another useful way to calm your mind is by meditating. To make sure you find the mindfulness technique that works best for you, try out a few different ones beforehand and use the most efficient one during your trip to set your mind at ease.
Have things with you that bring you joy. These can include physical item s like a book to read, or a game to play. It can be extremely useful in distracting you from your negative feelings. Alternatively, you can create a playlist of songs you love or have your favourite TV show with you. 59
Don’t forget your physical health. Being physically active is a great way to reduce feelings of anxiety and stress. 60 Going outside and connecting with nature can have a positive effect on your physical and mental wellbeing, which in turn will help reduce your anxious thoughts.
A.Brainstorm various kinds of anxiety.

C.Frankly speaking, negative feelings can’t be avoided.
D.Make sure to incorporate physical activity in your days.
E.Deep breathing is a technique proven to help reduce stress.
F.They will keep your mind occupied, decreasing your feelings of anxiety.
G.To help ease that anxious feeling, try to plan out your trip in as much detail as possible.
Many people’s mood goes slightly down as the days are getting shorter. Even if you don’t suffer from SAD(Seasonal Affective Disorder)— also called winter depression-you might feel different than just a few weeks ago.
Does that sound familiar? 61 As Mirthy’s Laughter Yoga Leader, I strongly believe in the health benefits of laughter, which are indeed impressive. The most obvious gain is that it puts people in a good mood. We assess mood levels before and after the Laughter Yoga session. Many participants’ mood goes up by at least two points-and that’s without drugs or pills, just by “a little bit” of laughter.
Dr Madan Kataria who is a medical doctor and created Laughter Yoga did quite a bit of research and found that laughter is a mild antidepressant (抗抑郁) as it releases endorphins and serotonin. 62 — again hormones and natural opiates (天然鸦片) play a big role in it-and without side effects.
63 It reduces the levels of stress hormones in our bodies. If you keep in mind that almost 90% of all ill-nesses are associated with stress and tension we hold in our body, laughter is an easy remedy, isn’t it? So there is some truth in the old saying: “Laughter is the best medicine” — well, at least it’s a start!
Some people go to the gym first thing in the morning, if that’s not your thing, just keep in mind that laughter is an aerobic exercise (有氧运动)-probably with much more fun! 64
I could go on, but I’ll stop here. For more health benefits, check out the PubMed research database where you’ll find over 2,600 references to laughter. 65
A.Just bring yourself an open mind.
B.Laughter is also a great stress relief.
C.If so, I have a possible solution for you!
D.This is to support our oxygen intake even more.
E.What’s more, laughter can be a natural pain killer.
F.Or maybe you can simply join us for the next Mirthy class.
G.Research found that ten minutes of laughter equals thirty minutes on the rowing machine.
I am always confused when reading statements like “Princeton University is the number one college in the United States.” Are those who attend Princeton inherently brighter than their peers? 66 Or is Princeton the best across all academic subjects overall?
I didn’t care about college rankings for years until I recently saw something different. This past October, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy unveiled the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2023, which assesses universities worldwide across 55 subjects in five disciplines. 67 And this makes it easier for prospective students to choose the best college for their specific subject.
68 When I delved deeper into the methodology behind these rankings, I discovered a complex web of criteria, including academic reputation, research output, and international collaboration. 69 However, they do not capture the entirety of the college experience. Factors like campus culture, extracurricular opportunities, and faculty-student interactions can profoundly shape your undergraduate years, yet they often remain unquantifiable in ranking systems.
70 What may be the ideal environment for one student pursuing engineering might not suit another studying literature. It’s crucial to consider your personal preferences, career aspirations, and learning style when evaluating potential colleges. While prestigious universities may offer unparalleled resources and networking opportunities, a smaller, lesser-known college might provide a more nurturing and supportive environment for your individual growth and development. Ultimately, the best college for you is the one that aligns with your values, ambitions, and vision for the future.
A.The value of a university education goes beyond its ranking.
B.Is Princeton the most beautiful campus all around the world?
C.Is Princeton able to produce more geniuses upon graduation?
D.That being said, how much weight should be given to these rankings?
E.Actually, the concept of a “best” college is subjective and context-dependent.
F.These measures provide valuable insights into the academic strength of universities.
G.It is said to employ a more in-depth approach to evaluate the performance of universities.

G.The concept of van life offers benefits beyond just a change of scenery.
6.根据下文“From the freedom to explore new horizons to fostering a minimalist mindset, here are some captivating advantages of embracing van life.(从探索新视野的自由到培养极简主义的心态,这是一些拥抱房车生活的迷人优势)”可知,拥有房车的好处不仅仅是可以开着它们去旅行欣赏沿途的风景。G项“The concept of van life offers benefits beyond just a change of scenery.(房车生活的概念提供的好处不仅仅是改变风景)”符合题意,引出下文。故选G。
7.根据下文“With minimal monthly expenses, such as parking fees and fuel costs, van dwellers can allocate resources to experiences rather than high rent or house payments. (由于每月的停车费和燃油费等开支很少,住房车的人可以将资源分配到体验上,而不是支付高昂的租金或住房费用)”可知,住房车更划算,可以节省不少开支用于体验。C项“Living in a van can often be more cost-effective.(住在房车里通常更划算)”符合题意,开启下文。故选C。
根据上文“You can choose to wake up at dawn over the ocean one day and find yourself in a forested mountainside the next. Living in a van frequently involves being close to the outdoors surrounded by the beauty of nature.(你可以选择在某天的黎明在大海上醒来,第二天发现自己在森林茂密的山腰上。住在一辆房车里,经常可以接近户外,被大自然的美景所包围)”可知,每天在大自然中醒来,被自然的美景所包围,那么大自然便成为了你日常生活的一部分。E项“The natural world becomes an essential part of your daily life(自然世界成为你日常生活中必不可少的一部分)”符合题意,nature和natural是关键词。故选E。

根据上文“Through the open road, the beauty of nature, and the friendship of fellow adventurers, van life presents a unique avenue for enriching the human experience. (通过开阔的道路,大自然的美丽,以及冒险者的友谊,房车生活为丰富人类体验提供了一条独特的途径)”推知,空处继续陈述这种生活带来的好处。F项“Better yet, it offers a way to reconnect with the essence of living.(更好的是,它提供了一种与生活本质重新联系的方式)”符合语境。
11.根据后文“Loads of homework can cause stress in a student and lead to health issues in the body and mind.(大量的家庭作业会给学生带来压力,并导致身心健康问题。)”
12.根据后文“The recommended amount is 10 minutes times the grade level. So first grade gets 10 minutes; second grade gets 20 minutes; third grade gets 30 minutes, and so on, but kids are doing much more than that.(建议的时间是10分钟乘以年级水平。一年级有10分钟;二年级有20分钟;三年级只有30分钟,以此类推,但孩子们做的远远不止这些。)”可知,此处是指学生的实际作业量远超推荐量是没有好处的,所以选项F“孩子们的作业量超过了推荐量,却没有任何学业上的好处。”切合文意。故选F。
13.根据后文“There is no academic benefit for high school students after 2 hours and there are no academic benefits for middle school students after 1 and a half hours.(2小时后对高中生没有任何学习效益,1个半小时后对中学生没有任何学习效益。)”
14.根据前文“Always doing homework can lead to less time for sports and after-school activities.(总是做作业会导致运动和课外活动的时间减少。)”和后文“Worse still, hanging out with friends is decreased, so that means there is less socializing.(更糟糕的是,和朋友出去玩的时间减少了,这意味着社交活动减少了。)”
15.根据后文“If teachers and parents tried to reduce the amount of homework, there would be a decrease in stress and anxiety and an increase in happiness!(如果老师和家长设法减少家庭作业的数量,压力和焦虑就会减少,幸福就会增加!)”
【答案】16.B 17.F 18.E 19.C 20.G

20.上文“Taking time away from work can allow you to approach problems in a new way.( 从工作中抽出时间可以让你以一种新的方式处理问题。)”说明可以从工作中抽出一些时间放松,下文“Laureates often point out that working long hours doesn’t always lead to efficiency.(诺贝尔奖得主经常指出,长时间工作并不总是带来效率。)”

【答案】31.G 32.F 33.D 34.A 35.E
31.上文“Building good habits takes tremendous effort and insight.(养成好习惯需要付出巨大的努力和洞察力)”说明养成好习惯不容易,下文“Here are some research-backed steps that can set you on the path from where you are to where you want to be.(以下是一些有研究支持的步骤,可以帮助你从现在的位置迈向你想要达到的目标)”统领全文,标明文章主题,G项“值得庆幸的是,科学不仅为我们提供了如何开始的指导,还提供了减轻这一过程负担的策略。”
32.上文“Goals such as “meditate regularly” are too abstract, research has shown.(研究表明,“定期冥想”等目标过于抽象)”说明不要设定太抽象的目标,F项“你将受益于更具体地说明你的确切目标和频率。”
33.上文“But a detailed, cue-based plan like “Every workday after my last meeting, I’ll spend 30 minutes studying Spanish in my office” is much more likely to stick as a habit.(但是,像“上次会议后的每个工作日,我都会花30分钟在办公室学习西班牙语”这样详细的、基于提示的计划更有可能成为一种习惯)”说明基于提示的计划更容易成为一种习惯,D项“制定这种类型的计划可以减少你忘记执行计划的可能性。”
34.下文“When we set out to build a new habit, most of us overestimate our willpower and set a course for the most efficient path to achieving our end goal. But research has shown you’ll persist longer and ultimately achieve more if you instead focus on finding ways to make goal pursuit fun.(当我们着手培养新习惯时,大多数人会高估自己的意志力,并为实现最终目标设定最高效的路径。但研究表明,如果你转而专注于寻找让追求目标变得有趣的方法,你会坚持得更久,最终实现更多)”说明有趣的方法可以走的更远,空处作为本段标题应概括段落大意,A项“让重复变得有趣。”符合语境。故选A项。
35.上文“Foster flexibility(培养灵活性)”作为本段标题概括段落大意,下文“But when you’re in the start-up phase of habit building, it’s important to insert some variability deliberately into your routine.(但当你处于养成习惯的起步阶段时,在你的日常生活中故意加入一些变化是很重要的)”与空处构成转折关系,E项“当我们将某一行为变为自动模式时,我们中的许多人都陷入了相当一致的日常生活中。”

E.Because moviegoers go in search of beauty
F.Moviegoers may be hopelessly addicted to the movies
G.It’s something to do with a response to leisure, free time
【答案】36.B 37.G 38.D 39.A 40.F
36.根据上文“Is a moviegoer different than a movie-lover? I’d say so. You can love a movie by watching it at home. (电影观众和电影爱好者有什么不同吗?我认为是的。你可以通过在家看电影来爱上一部电影。)这是电影爱好者的做法”以及下文“By listening to what they say, I can report they only share one thing in common: they go out. (通过听他们说的话,我可以说他们只有一个共同点:他们出去看电影。)”可知,设空处说明的是电影观众应是什么样的。选项B. To be a moviegoer, you have to go out(要想成为一名电影观众,你必须走出去)能够承接上文,引出下文,符合语境。故选B。
37.根据上文“Most often, his moviegoers don’t go to the movies for a distinct purpose. (大多数情况下,他的电影观众去看电影并没有明确的目的。)”以及下文“They are bored. Once they get inside, they can’t help but sink into a relaxed state. (他们很无聊。一旦进入室内,他们就会不由自主地陷入一种放松的状态。)”可知,空格处进一步解释,说明电影观众没有明确的目的。选项G. It’s something to do with a response to leisure, free time
38.根据上文“When they leave the movie theater, these moviegoers don’t want to talk to anyone about the movie. (当他们离开电影院时,这些电影观众不想和任何人谈论电影。)”可知,设空处应该说明的是电影观众离开电影院时的表现。选项D. They are instead wrapped up in themselves(相反,他们只在意自己的观影感受)承接上文。故选D。
39.根据上文“They may want to forget something, or escape from the lives they are leading. Or they may want to see a film they liked years ago. (他们可能想要忘记一些事情,或者逃离他们正在过的生活。或者他们可能想看一部他们多年前喜欢的电影。)”以及下文“they are the hopeless addicts who, quite simply, like movies. (他们是无可救药的影迷,很简单,就是喜欢电影。)”可知,设空处应说明的时不管他们有着什么目的,他们只是喜欢电影。选项A. Whatever motive they have 故选A。
40.根据上文“The only thing I would challenge in this definition is the word hopeless. (在这个定义中,我唯一要质疑的是“无望”这个词。)”以及下文“but they come to the movies filled with hope. (但他们带着希望来看电影。)”可知,空格处与“无望”有关,且与下文为转折关系。选项F. Moviegoers may be hopelessly addicted to the movies
【答案】41.D 42.A 43.B 44.F 45.G
41.根据前文“I run a lot of writing workshops in secondary schools and what I often see is this: teenagers in class just look at the blank page and freeze. Even when I assure them they can’t get it wrong in creative writing, they still pause and feel painful, looking to me for clear and definite instructions. This behavior results from their training to mimic (模仿). (我在中学举办了很多写作研讨会,我经常看到这样的情况:青少年在课堂上只是看着空白页,然后僵住了。即使我向他们保证,他们在创意写作中不会出错,他们仍然会停下来,感到痛苦,向我寻求清晰明确的指导。这种行为源于它们的模仿训练。)”可知,D项“They know it is a safe way to get good grades. (他们知道这是获得好成绩的安全方法)”是对前文行为的进一步解释。故选D项。
42.根据前文“However, creativity is highly valued by employers. According to The Conversation, creativity has been the number-one skill demanded by 20 million job ads on LinkedIn for two years in a row. (然而,创造力受到雇主的高度重视。据The Conversation网站报道,连续两年,在领英(LinkedIn)上的2000万个招聘广告中,创造力一直是最需要的技能。)”以及后文“Due to limited educational resources and assessment pressures, teenagers’ thinking becomes increasingly narrow, leaving them afraid to explore other possibilities. (由于有限的教育资源和考核压力,青少年的思维变得越来越狭隘,使他们不敢探索其他的可能性。)”可知前文讲述,工作中需要有创造力,后文讲述由于有限的教育资源和考核压力,青少年的思维变得越来越狭隘,所以前后文是转折关系,A项“But in schools, it is different. (但在学校,情况就不同了。)”符合文意,和前文构成转折关系,引出后文。故选A项。
43.分析设空,位于段首,应是本段的中心句,根据后文“It’s just an ability to make new connections and follow where they go. Actually, creativity requires qualities available to us all: courage, observation, curiosity, flexibility and perseverance. (这只是一种建立新关系并跟随他们前进的能力。实际上,创造力需要我们所有人都具备的品质:勇气、观察力、好奇心、灵活性和毅力。)”可知,本段在介绍什么是创造力,所以B项“Being creative isn’t a magical skill. (创造力并不是一种神奇的技能。)”符合本段主题,为本段中心句。故选B项。
44.根据前文“So how do we help teenagers be hopeful and brave? Firstly, we need to avoid the idea that their entire futures depend on this very assignment or that decision. (那么我们如何帮助青少年充满希望和勇敢呢?首先,我们需要避免这样的想法,即他们的整个未来取决于这个任务或那个决定。)”以及后文“There is no right way to live a life. (没有正确的生活方式。)”可知,此处在讲述,没有特定的方法帮助青少年充满希望和勇敢,所以F项“Life is long enough to try many things, and to change directions. (生命足够长,可以尝试很多事情,也可以改变方向。)”承接上文,下文则是对本句的进一步解释。故选F项。
45.空处位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“Secondly, let’s encourage inquiry. Children are naturally curious, but this curiosity often fades as they grow older, although it still exists within them. Just because they lack answers doesn’t mean they shouldn’t ask questions; rather, they should ask even more. (其次,让我们鼓励询问。孩子们天生好奇,但这种好奇心往往随着年龄的增长而消失,尽管它仍然存在于他们心中。仅仅因为他们没有答案并不意味着他们不应该问问题;相反,他们应该要求更多。)”可知,此处讲述鼓励孩子的好奇心,所以G项“The universe is held together with unanswered questions and endless possibilities. (宇宙是由未解之谜和无限可能性组成的。)”符合此处主题,是对前文的总结。故选G项。
Passage10.【2024•浙江绍兴•二模】
【答案】46.A 47.E 48.C 49.F 50.G
46.分析设空位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“Dear Fresher, joining a university can be a pleasant but challenging experience: horrific and yet beautiful, scary but exciting.(亲爱的新生们,上大学可能是一段愉快但又充满挑战的经历:可怕但又美丽,可怕但又令人兴奋)”可知,A项“It is a big turn on the pages of your life.(这是你人生的一个重大转折)”是对前文内容的总结,说明大学的重要性。故选A项。
47.根据前文“Before I met Sanaa, I had tried to force myself to make friends with classmates in my other majors. Then I was starting to get convinced that there was something wrong with me.(在认识萨那之前,我试着强迫自己和其他专业的同学交朋友。然后我开始确信我有什么问题)”以及后文“Eventually, when I started making more friends, it made sense why the friendships I had forced did not work out.(最终,当我开始结交更多的朋友时,我明白了为什么我强迫的友谊没有成功)”可知,空处应是介绍前文讲述的作者自己的问题所造成的后果,这个问题会导致他强迫的友谊没有成功,所以E项“That was why I got uninspired by every friendship I tried to make.(这就是为什么我对我试图结交的每一个朋友都不感兴趣)”符合文意。故选E项。
48.分析设空位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“It was my first lesson in understanding my uniqueness, and reminding me that my “friends” are somewhere, out there.(这是我了解自己独特性的第一课,并提醒我,我的“朋友”就在某处,在那里)”可知,作者明白,不需要刻意去结交他人,所以C项“I no longer struggle too hard to fit square pegs into round holes.(我不再费力地把方钉塞进圆孔里)”符合文意,通过比喻说明自己不再刻意去结交他人。故选C项。
49.分析设空,位于段首,应是本段的中心句,根据后文“Of course, you must leave room to grow and breathe- to discover amazing cultures, new accents, and new ways of matching your clothes-but do not do anything that needs you to abandon your genuine self in order to become.(当然,你必须留下成长和呼吸的空间——去发现令人惊叹的文化、新的口音和搭配衣服的新方法——但不要做任何需要你为了成为而放弃真实自我的事情)”可知,本段讲述了大一新生不要做任何需要你为了成为而放弃真实自我的事情,所以F项“While the new phase of life is challenging, remember who you truly are.(当生活的新阶段充满挑战时,记住真正的自己)”符合文意。故选F项。
50.根据前文“Finally, it might not look like it, but the four, five, or six years you will be in university will pass by really quickly.(最后,它可能看起来不像,但你在大学的四年、五年或六年时间会很快过去)”以及后文“Perhaps that is DIYs, writing blog posts, participating in club activities in your department, or joining the dance troupe.(也许是diy,写博客,参加部门的社团活动,或者加入舞蹈团)”可知,前文讲述时间过得很快,后文讲述参加活动,所以空处应是一个过渡句,G项“Seek out opportunities to do stuff you are passionate about during your free time.(在空闲时间找机会做你感兴趣的事情)”符合文意,承接上文,引出下文。
【答案】51.A 52.E 53.B 54.C 55.F
51.根据上文“Did you grow up in one culture, your parents came from another, and you are now living in a totally different country? (你是否在一种文化中长大,你的父母来自另一种文化,而你现在生活在一个完全不同的国家?)”以及第二段第一句“The term ‘third-culture kids’ was invented in the 1960s by U.S. sociologist Dr. Ruth Hill Useem. (“第三文化儿童”一词是由美国社会学家Ruth Hill Useem博士在20世纪60年代发明的)”可知,空格处应该总结你就是第三文化儿童。由此可知,选项A. If so, then you are a third-culture kid! 故选A。
52.根据上文“She first encountered this phenomenon when she researched North American children living in India. (当她研究生活在印度的北美儿童时,她第一次遇到了这种现象)”以及下文“Caught between two cultures, they form their own. (在两种文化之间,他们形成了自己的文化)”可知,空格处应该说明的是第三文化儿童的情况,即不能适应自己祖国的文化。由此可知,选项E. After many years, these kids still could not adapt to their host culture.(多年以后,这些孩子仍然不能适应他们的东道主文化)能够承上启下,选项中的these kind与下文中的they相呼应。故选E。
53.根据上文“In general, they often reach excellent academic results. (总的来说,他们往往能取得优异的学业成绩)”可知,空格处进一步说明他们学业上的优秀。由此可知,选项B. About 90 percent of them have a university degree.
When returning to the U.K. to go to university, she realized she had benefited a lot from her years overseas. (当她回到英国上大学时,她意识到自己在海外的这些年受益匪浅)”可知,空格处进一步说明海外经历获得的好处。由此可知,选项C. The languages picked up abroad were really useful.
55.根据上文“A third-culture kid may not be able to adapt themselves completely to their new surroundings as expected. (第三文化的孩子可能无法像预期的那样完全适应新环境)”以及下文“Besides, when they return home, the home country can prove to be more foreign than anything they came across before. (此外,当他们回国时,祖国可能比他们以前遇到的任何地方都更加陌生)”可知,空格处应该说明的是第三文化的孩子可能遇到的问题,即对自己东道主国家的不适应。由此可知,选项F. Instead, they may always remain an outsider in different host cultures.

Once you understand what triggers your anxiety, you can plan ahead for the best ways to handle it.(为了能够最好地应对你的旅行焦虑,你需要对真正导致它的事情有一个很好的理解。
57.前文“Plan out your trip details. One of the reasons for your travel anxiety is that you’re being taken out of your comfort zone and won’t have full control over everything.( 计划好你的旅行细节。旅行焦虑的原因之一是你被带出了自己的舒适区,不能完全控制一切。)”建议要计划好旅行细节,缓解走出舒适区的不舒适带来的焦虑,因此推断G项“为了帮助缓解这种焦虑的感觉,试着尽可能详细地计划你的旅行。”符合语境,与标题一致,承接上文内容。故选G。

60.前文“Don’t forget your physical health. Being physically active is a great way to reduce feelings of anxiety and stress.( 不要忘记你的身体健康。积极锻炼身体是减少焦虑和压力的好方法。)”讲述积极锻炼身体是缓解焦虑的好方法,后文“讲述”,因此推断D项“确保每天都有体育锻炼。”符合语境,呼应前文提到的“积极锻炼身体”。故选D。
Passage13.【2024•浙江杭州•一模】

Even if you don’t suffer from SAD(Seasonal Affective Disorder)-also called winter depression-you might feel different than just a few weeks ago.(随着白天越来越短,许多人的情绪都会有所下降。 提出一个问题“ Does that sound familiar? If so, I have a possible solution for you!(如果是这样,我有一个可能的解决方案给你!)
62.根据上文“Dr Madan Kataria who is a medical doctor and created Laughter Yoga did quite a bit of research and found that laughter is a mild antidepressant (抗抑郁) as it releases endorphins and serotonin.( Madan Kataria博士是一名医学博士,他创造了“微笑瑜伽”,他做了很多研究,发现笑是一种温和的抗抑郁药,因为它会释放内啡肽和血清素。)”和下文“again hormones and natural opiatesplay a big role in it-and without side effects.(荷尔蒙和天然鸦片在其中发挥了重要作用,而且没有副作用。)” What’s more, laughter can be a natural pain killer.(更重要的是,笑是一种天然的止痛药。)
根据下文“It reduces the levels of stress hormones in our bodies.(它能降低我们体内的应激激素水平。)” 下文中的“reduces the levels of stress hormones”和B项中的“a great stress relief”对应。B项:Laughter is also a great stress relief.(笑也是一种很好的减压方式。)

65.根据上文“For more health benefits, check out the PubMed research database where you’ll find over 2,600 references to laughter.(要了解更多的健康益处,请查看PubMed研究数据库,在那里你可以找到2600多个关于笑的参考资料。)” Or maybe you can simply join us for the next Mirthy class.( 或者你可以和我们一起参加下一节欢乐的课。)
66.上文“I am always confused when reading statements like ‘Princeton University is the number one college in the United States.’ Are those who attend Princeton inherently brighter than their peers? (当我读到‘普林斯顿大学是美国第一大学’这样的说法时,我总是很困惑。普林斯顿的学生天生就比同龄人聪明吗?)”及下文“Or is Princeton the best across all academic subjects overall?
