When I volunteered as a social worker at a domestic violence shelter, I imagined previous experience had prepared me. I imagined conducting interviews and seeking support everywhere for the women to rebuild their lives. I felt as if I already had months of experience, experience gained in the hypothetical (假设的) situations I had invented and subsequently resolved single-handedly. I felt thoroughly prepared to tackle any situation.
I arrived full of zeal. Within moments, reality made a sharp break from what I had expected. The coordinator (协调员) explained the shelter’s need for financial self-sufficiency became obvious. To address this, the center was planning to open a bakery. I offered the small enterprise case studies I had researched at the university. In response to my impassioned reply, the coordinator declared me in charge of the bakery. At that moment, I was as prepared to bake bread as I was to run for political office. The bigger problem, however, was that I was completely unfamiliar with the for-profit business models necessary to run the bakery. I was out of my depth in a foreign river with only my coordinator’s belief to keep me afloat.
They say that necessity is the mother of invention. I began finding recipes and using the expertise of friends. With their help making bread, printing leaflets and making contacts, the bakery was soon running successfully, becoming a significant source of income for the house.
Besides funds, baking bread provided a natural environment to get to know the women of the shelter. Kneading dough (揉面团) side by side, I shared in the friendly atmosphere of the kitchen, hearing stories about their children, the towns and jobs they had to leave behind to ensure their safety. Baking helped me develop strong relationships with the women and advanced my understanding of their situations. It also improved their ability to master a new skill and gave them confidence. By contributing to the upkeep of the house, they were proud to have the capability to support themselves.
Baking gave me the opportunity to work in a capacity I had not expected, but one that proved successful. Learning to bake gave me as much newfound self-confidence as it gave the women, and I found that sometimes quality social work can be as simple as kneading dough.
24. What does the underlined word “zeal” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Sympathy. B. Eagerness. C. Prejudice. D. Curiosity.
25. What’s the coordinator’s attitude to the author running a bakery?
A. Optimistic. B. Ambiguous. C. Objective. D. Cautious.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Description of jobs in the bakery. B. The bakery’s contributions to funds.
C. Benefits of running the bakery. D. Harmonious atmosphere in the bakery.
27. What does the writer want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. It’s common to underestimate one’s ability.
B. Performing social work with no experience is easy.
C. One can gain benefit from work by helping others.
D. Quality of social work should be enhanced.

When the patient arrives, it can barely move its body. The parrot tries to spread its green wings — and fails — to fly. It is just one of dozens of rainbow lorikeets (彩虹鹦鹉) being treated for a mysterious paralyzing (瘫痪) illness in Australia. Cases of what is called lorikeet paralysis syndrome (LPS) have been increasing over the past decade, says vet Claude Lacasse. But scientists are puzzled as to what is causing it.
Claude has partnered with several researchers to try solving the mystery. So far, they’ve ruled out hundreds of human-made chemicals as well as various infectious diseases. Their current theory is that LPS is caused by a plant the birds are eating, something that flowers or fruits between late spring and early fall — when cases always rise. But researchers have no idea which plant or plants might be involved, why the disease is getting worse or whether climate change is playing a role. For now, their top priority is figuring out everything the sick lorikeets are eating.
Ecologist Rachele Wilson used a technique involving testing DNA in sick birds’ droppings to match it to specific plant DNA. These data suggest the birds are feeding on more than 130 plant species, at least 30 of which are probably poisonous. Other researchers are not just looking at plant DNA but also at bacterial and animal DNA to allow for the possibility that the birds are swallowing a poisonous insect in fruit, or a poison produced by bacteria found on a plant.
It’s possible climate change plays a role by driving rainbow lorikeets to seek out unusual food sources. Animals are broadening their hunting range and going into more traditionally uninviting areas to find food including fruit, seeds and, strangely, even meat.
With climate change causing more extreme weather events and intensely hot summers, the need to find what’s paralyzing rainbow lorikeets — and probably other species — is of urgent concern. “They’re amazing birds,” Phalen says. “It’s hard to see them as sick as they are.”
28 What is the primary task of Claude and his team in their research?
A. Identifying lorikeets’ living habits. B. Discovering what lorikeets are feeding on.
C. Deciding what chemicals led to LPS. D. Locating where lorikeets usually gather.
29. What can we learn about other researchers in paragraph 3?
A. They collected data from a specific area.
B. They identified DNA hidden in different plants.
C. They take more possibilities into consideration.
D. They have found the number of plants lorikeets eat.
30. How does climate change possibly influence rainbow lorikeets?
A. By making a change in their diets. B. By enlarging their habitats.
C. By lengthening their hunting season. D. By forcing them to settle in cooler areas.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Endangered Rare Species in Australia
B. Strange Diseases Striking Australian Birds
C. The Influence of Climate Change on Animals
D. The Mystery of Australia’s Paralyzed Parrots

Instagram, a social media site similar to Microblog, advertises the kind of life which almost anyone would look forward to. If you take social media’s word for it, the world is full of happy, healthy, thriving people taking luxury vacations, and getting drinks with lifelong friends. But celebrities like Chrissy Teigen and Dax Shepard have gone in a different direction, inspiring millions of users by sharing both the ordinary and raw experiences of real life. Are people happier and more satisfied when they describe themselves in a way that feels real or when they share a self-idealized version of their life? In our research, we set out to answer this question.
Our starting point was a data set of over 10,000 Facebook users who had completed a personality questionnaire. This unique data set allowed us to compare the way that people see themselves with how they describe themselves to their social network and the world through their posts and the pages they follow. For instance, “Jane” might think of herself as an introvert (内向者) and describe herself as such in a questionnaire. If she posted on social media in the way introverts typically do, say, talking about reading, her social media authenticity (真实性) score would be high. In other words, her self-view would match the way she expressed herself to others. In contrast, Jane were to describe herself as an introvert but posted in a way that is typical of extroverts, let’s say talking about parties, her social media authenticity score would be low.
Mapping this authenticity score to participants’ level of life satisfaction showed that those who expressed themselves in a more authentic way reported more satisfaction with their life. A clear win for Teigen and Shepard!
Yet one of the questions that came up was: Is this really true for everybody? So we went back to our data to test that. As it turns out, this worry was largely unreasonable. The extent to which authentic self-expression on social media was related to participants’ life satisfaction didn’t depend on how socially desirable their personality profiles were. Namely, both extroverts and introverts benefited equally from being true to themselves.
But does authentic expression actually lead to higher levels of life satisfaction? To answer it, we employed social media users and randomly assigned them to either post in a way that was authentic or post in a way that was popular and made them look good in the eyes of others. After a week spent following these instructions, we switched the groups: the people who had initially posted in an authentic way were then asked to post in an idealized way, and vice versa. Supporting our initial finding, we discovered that after posting in an authentic way for a week, participants reported higher levels of positive affect and mood.
32. How was the research mainly carried out?
A. By referring to previous documents. B. By interviewing Facebook users.
C. By teaming up with celebrities. D. By analyzing statistics.
33. What plays the leading role in impacting on a person’s life contentment?
A. True self demonstration. B. Pleasing personality.
C. Personal online image. D. Descriptive language.
34. What can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A. The introverts were more likely to express their true selves on social media.
B. The extraverts were usually hiding their true feelings from people online.
C. The introverts and extraverts profited from showing genuine selves.
D. One’s life satisfaction depended on his socially desirable personality.
35. What advice does the writer probably want to give?
A. Make yourself accessible on the Internet.
B. Advertise yourself widely on the website.
C. Compare yourself with others online.
D. Be yourself on social media.

Everyone likes the beautiful Cinderella, but I like the ugly stepsister.
The sidewalk was filled with shoppers as my mother and I hurried to the department store. I raised my neck for a look at the holiday window display, but at the age of six I was too small to see around the grown-ups with their winter coats and packages. When at last we reached the store, I stood with my eyes widened. “Look, Mother,” I shouted, pressing my hands against the glass, “Cinderella.” Before my eyes was the most beautiful doll I had ever seen! She wore a fairy princess suit made of shining red silk. I knew if I lifted her skirt I would find her crystal (水晶) shoes. The tiny tiara (冠状头饰) fastened to her silky golden hair shone.
“If only she were mine,” I dreamed. “We’d have tea parties, share secrets and dance with a handsome prince.” But to my disappointment, my mother guided me away from the window, explaining that she and my father could not afford such an expensive doll. “But there will be a very special gift under the tree for you on Christmas morning, Madge,” she said. “I promise.” Later that week I leaned against Mother’s sewing machine, watching the needle flash up and down. “Bet you don’t know what this is!” she joked, holding up the cloth for me to see.
“My Christmas doll!” I yelled. It was still in the early stages but I could make out the head, neck and body. “So much to my surprise!” Mother laughed as I danced around the room, already pretending Cinderella and I were at the ball. It wouldn’t be long now.
My excitement grew with each passing day. Mother continued to work on the doll, and whenever I walked into the room she would hide it under a pillow. I could tell by her smile she was pleased with her progress. On Christmas morning I jumped out of bed, ran down the hall and quickly arrived at the living room where the Christmas tree was placed.

M: I guess it’s their culture. So when did you get back to the US? Last weekend?
W: No. My plane took off last Sunday night.

W: I think studying literature in university was helpful. As a student of literature, one learns about writing by experiencing writing first hand. Also, reading helped too. After getting my PhD, I became a university lecturer. I read widely about creative writing.
M: Did you read in order to become a writer?
W: Not really. I just wanted to become a better teacher of literature. Later I ended up teaching a course on creative writing at Daystar University. All of these experiences helped me become a creative writer.
M: So do you have a lot of time to write now?
W: Not really. Now I’ve a family to take care of. But Henry is very supportive. He sometimes takes our kids out so that I can write.

M: Yes. I know something about it. Alexander the Great established the city more than 2,000 years ago.
W: It’s a really old city.
M: You can say so. It has survived invasions, fires and earthquakes in the past 2,000 years. But now Alexandria faces severe flooding from rising waters blamed on climate change.
W: That’s really bad. It’s such an important city.
M: Yes. It is Egypt’s second largest city, with more than 5 million people. It is also an important port and home to about 40 percent of Egypt’s industrial activity. But the city is surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea and sits next to a lake. With climate change, it now is often stricken by floods.
W: I heard it experienced a natural disaster in 2015.
M: That’s true. Large parts of the city were flooded. At least six people were killed in the flooding, which also destroyed many homes.
W: I’m afraid many coastal cities will disappear in the future.
M: I agree. But it’s not too late yet.
W: What do you mean?
M: I mean humans can still save the cities by preventing climate change. Now I often encourage my students to help protect Earth in class.

B
A. Optimistic. B. Ambiguous. C. Objective. D. Cautious.
26 What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
B 25. A 26. C 27. C

Animals are broadening their hunting range and going into more traditionally uninviting areas to find food, including fruit, seeds and, strangely, even meat.
With climate change causing more extreme weather events and intensely hot summers, the need to find what’s paralyzing rainbow lorikeets — and probably other species — is of urgent concern. “They’re amazing birds,” Phalen says. “It’s hard to see them as sick as they are.”
28. What is the primary task of Claude and his team in their research?
B 29. C 30. A 31. D

根据倒数第二段“It’s possible climate change plays a role by driving rainbow lorikeets to seek out unusual food sources. Animals are broadening their hunting range and going into more traditionally uninviting areas to find food, including fruit, seeds and, strangely, even meat. (气候变化可能在驱使彩虹鹦鹉寻找不寻常的食物来源方面发挥了作用。动物们正在扩大它们的狩猎范围,进入传统意义上不受欢迎的地区寻找食物,包括水果、种子,奇怪的是,甚至还有肉)”可知,气候变化促使彩红鹦鹉到处寻找食物,扩大狩猎范围,寻找不同的食物。由此推知,气候变化增加了彩红鹦鹉饮食的多样性。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“When the patient arrives, it can barely move its body. The parrot tries to spread its green wings — and fails — to fly.

Boundaries are personal guidelines that define what is and isn’t okay in your interpersonal relationships. As everyone has different needs and comfort levels, they may appear different for each person. Having healthy boundaries may provide such benefits as avoiding burnout, boosting self-respect and maintaining personal space. ___36___ After setting your boundaries, it’s helpful to review them on a regular basis to keep them relevant to your life circumstances.

Once you have identified your boundaries, it is important to communicate them effectively. ___38___ Express your ideas in an open and straightforward manner; speak up for yourself so that others can hear, understand and respect your needs. Additionally, take a step back if tensions arise during a conversation about setting boundaries. Allow yourself or the other person to cool down before restarting the conversation. ___39___

由上文“Having healthy boundaries may provide such benefits as avoiding burnout, boosting self-respect and maintaining personal space. ”(拥有健康的界限可能会带来诸如避免倦怠、增强自尊和保持个人空间等好处。)可知,这里提到了建立健康界限的好处,接下来应该是总结性的话语或者进一步强调其重要性。因此,E选项“Therefore, setting healthy boundaries is of importance in social activities.”(因此,在社会活动中设定健康的界限是很重要的)强调了设定健康界限的重要性,起到了承上启下的作用,符合题意。故选E。
由下文“The way you set them reflects your attitude to taking responsibility in life. Taking the time to think about your wants and needs in different situations will help you understand how your values influence boundary-setting. Once you have made the list of your values, needs, and wants, use that knowledge to establish clear boundaries that respect yourself and those around you.”(你设定目标的方式反映了你对生活负责的态度。
由上文“Once you have identified your boundaries, it is important to communicate them effectively.”(一旦你确定了你的界限,有效地与他们沟通是很重要的。)和下文“Express your ideas in an open and straightforward manner; speak up for yourself so that others can hear, understand and respect your needs.”(以开放和直接的方式表达你的想法;为自己说话,这样别人才能听到、理解和尊重你的需求。) 故选A。
由上文“Allow yourself or the other person to cool down before restarting the conversation.”(在重新开始谈话之前,让自己或对方冷静下来。)
由上文“When learning how to set healthy boundaries, it is essential to learn how to say “no”. Saying “yes” to everything can lead to stress, burnout, and frustration. It is important to understand what you consider acceptable and unacceptable.”(当学习如何设定健康界限时,学习如何说“不”是很重要的。 和下文“If the situation continues, remove yourself from it respectfully. You deserve more than surrounding yourself with people who don’t value your values.”(重要的是要明白你认为什么是可以接受的,什么是不可接受的。

I’m sorry to learn that you feel upset because your mother is always posting your photos on WeChat Moments without your permission. I want to offer my support and understanding. It’s completely normal to feel annoyed when personal boundaries are crossed, especially on social media where privacy might be exposed.
I’d like to offer my suggestions. I think it’s wise to have a calm and honest conversation with your mother, letting her know how these postings make you feel. And it might be a good choice to clearly outline what you are comfortable with. Setting some boundaries can help prevent future misunderstandings. But remember, your mom likely posts these pictures because she loves you and is proud of you. A little understanding on both sides can go a long way in resolving this issue.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
There, underneath the tree, was a beautifully packed gift box. Inside it was the “doll!” I expected. With butterflies in my stomach, I breathed deeply and then opened it expectantly. However, much to my disappointment, it was nothing like the one that we saw at the store. She wore a plain skirt with a simple face. Her black woolen hair was pulled back in a pony tail, with no shiny tiara at all, not to mention the crystal shoes.
In a word, the doll was nothing like Cinderella; she looked more like her ugly stepsister. But I could see my mother watching me, with an eager look on her face. Thinking of mom staying up late into the night making the doll for me, I knew mom would be sad if she knew what I really felt. Hiding my disappointment, I shouted with delight, “She’s hard to resist! Thanks, Mom!” A relieved smile appeared on my mother’s face. From time to time, I would take the “ugly stepsister” out and admire it. It is a reminder of my mother’s love. Her love attached to the doll will make me happy even if things don’t always tick all the right boxes.
